Belloc's Best?

I can't say whether this is Belloc's best book: I haven't read all of the approximately 100 that he wrote. It is probably the best of the dozen or so I have read - and there was not a bad one in the lot. Here Belloc dramtically and perceptively narrates 31 crucial, but not necessarily well known, moments from over 2500 years of French history. As France has always been the key nation in Christendom, this book really provides an invaluable education in the history of Europe from Julius Caesar to World War I. The account of the Battle of Tours, "The Breaking of Islam," is alone worth the price of the book. My high school history students loved it!

Great gift for someone from that part of the country.

I bought this as a birthday gift for my stepmom after seeing it in a literary catalog, Amazon had it cheaper of course. She is from South Dakota and I had an idea she might like the book, but she LOVED it. She said she clocked in 20 minutes late from her lunch break on the day I gave it to her, because she couldn't put it down. I later learned that she lived in the country and had lots of homes, wells, etc. that were WPA projects. A home run gift on this one, too bad they are not all this easy.

Antoinette Bosco offers readers hope, encouragement and a sense of the true love God has for each of us in this special book. I was especially touched by her sharing of a few tragedies from her own life, and the grace with which she was able to accept and move on from the pain she must have surely felt, because of her acceptance of God's love and will in these situations. A positive and uplifting reading experience.

A Treasure of a Sleeper...If You Can Get It...Do It!

Review Date: 2000-06-27
A wonderful journey of photos, poetry, and prose into the blacks, whites and infinite greys of mindfulness. Truly of journey of great labor and love by the author. The photos are simple yet intimate and are paired with words from familiar songs and writings from primarily the 1960's and 1970's that will enable the reader to refocus on the Now. This book is one that you will go back to time and time again for inspiration or just for the beauty of it all. It is creative, artistic, and definately a sleeper that never received the acclaim that it deserves. If you are lucky enough to find a copy, anticipate, then sit back and enjoy the relections in the mirror of your mind.

This book is excellent for children that are just starting to loose their teeth, and are afraid of what to expect. My daughter was ready to loose her teeth when the time came, and wasn't afraid at all. Of course, the money she got didn't hurt at all!

With the soaring gas prices of 2008, perhaps you need another option for a vacation this year. Through the pages of "Mississippi Weddings" you can travel to Magnolia Bay, Mississippi. You will soon fall in love with the small town, its residents, hospitality and charm.

You can meet one of the newest business owners who returned to her hometown to open up a second Color store. She started the business in Dallas but has returned to Magnolia Bay to help the city's failing economy and bring new life to it. She has a man in Dallas who wants to marry her but she isn't sure about marrying him because he was not her first love. When returning to Magnolia Bay, she reunites with Nick Chambers. Will her coming back home be a chance for the two of them to get back together and realize that they are meant to be together?

Ronni Melrose is brokenhearted. Her husband has died but his memory lives on. She remembers the good times she had with him but he has left a mess of finances. Ronni moves into Melrose Manor with her mother-in-law Claudia. Cole Barton is a nephew to Claudia but is more like a son to him. He wants to straighten out the financial mess that Claudia is found in. Would opening up a business in Magnolia Bay help the city's economy as well as be an answer to Claudia's problems?

While visiting Magnolia Bay through the pages of "Mississippi Weddings," you don't have to worry about the weather but the weather forecast is first and foremost in Dani's life. She is now the woman in charge of the city. There is a hurricane brewing in the ocean and it looks certain that Magnolia Bay is in for a direct hit. Thad was rejected by Meagan Chambers but he now has his sights set on Dani. She is afraid of getting into any relationship. Can Thad break down her resistance to him and make her see that they should be more than friends? Perhaps that hurricane is just what will sweep these two people into a relationship with lasting effects.

You don't have to rely on sunny weather and buy any new clothes to go on vacation; in "Mississippi Weddings," you can visit Magnolia Bay today!

A computing breakthrough!

Dr. Sapaty describes some very far out and very powerful technologies that are coming on line for organizational management of dynamic distributed systems. The Internet will no longer be just for sending emails and basic e-commerce in the very near future. I see WAVE as a general solver to a multitude of distributed systems. WAVE is a new methodology and technology enabling the solution of any reasonable, and some that may not be currently reasonable, problem in distributed computer networks, with code mobility being a key principle. The technology allows for the problem description on a semantic level, shifting traditional coordination, synchronization, and data or agent exchange to automatic implementation, making application programming very compact and simple.

This WAVE paradigm looks very powerful: One issue with it is that it is so radically new and improved from what is currently being done, that it will take a while for people to actually believe it is real! I do, and now I want - no, need - to help convince others...The fact that you are reading this review indicates that you have interest in this field. As such, I recommend that you purchase this book, as well as his new book that discusses advances in the spatial programming of distributed dynamic worlds (which is due to be released soon) and judge for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

The Influence of the China Trade, Orientalism & Universalism on Melville's Romanticism
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-09
Moby-Dick and Peace sheds new light on Melville's Romanticism through the context of the China trade and China-related travel and texts. Dr. Ferrantello writes original interpretations of symbolism such as the masthead, "meditations and water", "circumambulation of the city," the ocean, the "universal yellow lotus", the symphony of sea and sky and the whale and of Melville's biblical, Jobian conclusions. The imaginative association of nineteenth-century visionary illustrations by Elihu Vedder and contemporary realist paintings by Joseph Raffael enhance this new presentation.
As a groundbreaking study, this book is very readable for both the scholar and the intelligent layperson who want to understand Moby-Dick. The interdisciplinary knowledge structured into six chapters can provide a companion volume for students and teachers studying Melville's text.

Recommended:

"Arguing against critics who claim Melville as wholly pessimistic and even anti-religious, in this important new book on Moby-Dick and its sources, Ferrantello persuasively makes a case for Melville as an American Universalist. Drawing on sources as diverse as the French translations used by Thoreau and other Transcendentalists, the monumental work on Asian religions by Samuel Johnson, and the works of European Orientalists, Ferrantello meticulously documents the many influences on and parallels to Melville's fluid religious Universalism. Moby-Dick and Peace is a book that subsequent critics will have to reckon with." -Arthur 1. Versluis,
author of American Transcendentalism and Asian Religions

About the author:

Dr. D. J. Ferrantello earned a doctorate in American Literature, Culture, and Religion and a master's of philosophy in Nineteenth Century Thought from Drew University. Additional study included master's coursework in English and American Literature at Boston University, master's coursework in church history, biblical studies and comparative religions and a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Literature from the University of Connecticut. Having lived overseas, Dr. Ferrantello has taught graduate courses at Moscow State University and high school English while living in Africa, as well as having journeyed to the Far East four times, making the study of Asian language and culture a lifelong goal.

Loved this book (and Sarene's insights) - Sarene offers a wonderful perspective on the world and a way to make us think about how uniquely refreshing our children are. I recommend this to anyone with a child, niece/nephew, or has children in their lives - let them ask you questions, share Sarene's questions, and have a great conversation!
