A Simply Beautiful Story of Friendship
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-03
The story is one of friendship. One friend shares something very special with her best friend who had always helped her in the past. This new sharing was more than it appeared in the beginning. The knowledge and inner soul of the young character Kathryn show another side to a topic often avoided and not dealt with by readers, teachers, or youngsters. In the end, the sadness is felt by those who can empathize with the main heroine, Kathryn, when she must be happy for her friend even though she is sad for herself - it is a book with so many lessons and topics for discussion that it boggles the mind. To ease your mind, if you are teachers or parents, order the parent/teacher guide it provides excellent literature extensions. Hope to see these wonderful women from Open Minds Inc. in Canada at the next CEC convention. If you didn't hear the author talk - you'll want to at the next convention.

I loved the book and the story surprised me!

I couldn't believe Kathryn was in a wheelchair. I was so surprised by it that I read all night and didn't put it down until I finished it. I would recommend it to everyone. I am now reading another book about the same character called Whoa, Nellie! and I love it too.

Extraordinary book!

One of my four all time favorite books - I have even purchased it as a gift for friends who read romance from time to time. The story is extremely well paced, the characters much more finely drawn than most romance books, and a fairly realistic story for romance.

I usually prefer romantic suspense but this one too great not to recommend! While Duncan's other books are well written, this is by far her best book and I wish she'd written others. This was written in the early 90's and have not seen anything by her since the 90's. I highly recommend this.

My Favorite Romance!!

I've read literally thousands of romances, but "Beyond All Reason" is my all time favorite. I've read it so many times, I've had to replace my copy several times!

This heartwrenching tale left me stunned the first time I read it. Never had I read a story that pulled me in as much as this one. I found myself rereading it immediately just because I didn't want it to end! I must also admit that I found myself falling a little in love with Tanner McCall myself. Judith Duncan knows how to create a leading man!

Kate Quinn is running from her manipulative, controlling estranged husband. Terrified, she travels from town to town in a desperate attemp to keep her two young sons safe.

The advertisement in the newspaper was a godsend. Tanner McCall needs someone to care for his aging business partner and closest friend. The job requires her to live on Tanner's ranch in the back country. Kate accepts the job knowing that the ranch will be the safe haven that she is so desperately searching for.

When Kate arrives, she is suprised to find that Tanner is not the aging ranch hand she expected. Instead he is young, virile, and extremely handsome. Kate is deeply intrigued by him, but his stony exterior and curt attitude makes it very clear that he wants to be left alone. But Tanner's business partner, Burt Shaw likes Kate and her boys immediately. Kate's two sons become good friends with Burt - this unlikely trio provides comedic relief throughout the novel.

Other characters include a flirtatous old cowboy, Tanner's devil-may care younger brother Chase, and Tanner's childhood friend and manager of the local truck stop/cafe, Rita.

As the story unfolds, Kate learns something of Tanner's tragic past and discovers that his stoicism is his way of hiding his scars.

Kate knows what it is like to be haunted by the past and finds herself wanting to know more about Tanner McCall. The more she knows, the more she falls for him. Tanner isn't immune to Kate either.

Eventually Kate and Tanner face their attraction, but not without difficulty. Kate finds that she is deeply in love with Tanner, but is only able to take it one day at a time. Tanner keeps his feelings under lock and key, but Kate knows that he cares for her. Slowly they let their guards down and begin to form a relationship. When Tanner begins to show acceptance of her small sons, Kate can't help but think of them becoming a family.

Just when things seem to be going great, the road gets very rocky. Kate and Tanner are forced to make some tough decisions that could make or break their future together.

Will Kate and Tanner be able to face their deep rooted fears, bury their painful pasts for the sake of a love beyond all reason?

Read the book and see! I promise you won't be disappointed!!!

I have really enjoyed this resource. I used it to write scripture classes for the local prison and use it when I am the one who does the homily at the prison. It is just a great product that takes all readings in Biblical context.

We have been using this guide for our Men's Sunday Readings Faith Sharing and have found it very helpful in provoking great discussion. The commentary and the questions cover all three readings for each Sunday. We read and discuss the materials for the following Sunday, it helps to know ahead of time what the Readings are about. I have used it to lead RCIA dismissal also and find it very helpful.

Great coverage of each Open since 1900
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-06
This engaging book gives the history of the British Open since it was first played in 1860 with complete coverage of each event since 1900. Most of the individually covered Open championships receive two pages, including good textual reporting of the event as well as photographs. The coverage is divided into historical periods such as the age of Bobby Locke and Peter Thompsion in the 50s and 60s when the two won eight Opens between them. This book is so up to date that Tiger Woods' monumental victory in 2000 receives full coverage. The great Open champions as well as the obscure Cinderella stories all receive lavish treatment. Additionally, the book has other great features such as a description and illustration of each of the Open courses, including venues that have not been used in decades. So, if you want to relive Arnold Palmer's emotional fairwell or the great duel between Nicklaus and Watson in which Watson prevailed after a gut wretching effort, this is the book for you. Additionally, this is the type of book that makes a great gift for the golf lover on your gift list.

I find I use this book as much for cooking on the backyard barbeque as I do off road. The recipes are fun, very easy to prepare, and help keep my family events very interesting. A great book.

This book makes me laugh and it makes me hungry.

I just bought a copy of "Campers Roasting on an Open Fire." I've been enjoying the humor sections first, and I can hardly wait to try out these recipes.

One of my favorite humor sections is called "More Clues That You're At A Bad Campground." My favorite clue is that "Your cabin is so old that the bed's "magic fingers" have arthritis."

Another favorite humor section is "Your Dog As A Handy Excuse When You'd Rather Be Camping." My favorite excuse is: "My dog's learned to reset my alarm clock from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. so that he can get a couple more hours uninterrupted shut-eye."

I'm looking forward to trying the recipes, especially the ones for chicken, turkey, pasta, side dishes, breakfast, desserts, and trail mixes. But most of all, I want to try out the ones where Spam is one of the ingredients. Mmmmmm, my favorite!

I always love it when a cookbook lays flat, like this one does. I like the funny drawings, and the extra little boxes of interesting facts.

The recipes are clear and simple to read. The book is well organized.

Two thumbs up!

The A-interface from A to Z

This book is the most comprehensive book I've seen on the A-interface for networking within cellular systems. It's truly evident that the authors have lived and breathed this technology and have boiled it down to the essentials while providing time saving tips along the way. Whether you will touch on this interface from the R&D or Operations side of the business this book is a "must-have"!

Excellent reference for the CDMA Open A-Interface

Review Date: 2000-07-19
This is an excellent comprehensive book on the aspect of the CDMA networks. The contents of the book covered the Protocols(SS7, BSMAP), Supplementary features (OTASP, SMS etc) as well as implementations (call processing) for the Open-A interface standard, which is prevalent adopted in the U.S. PCS wireless systems.

Well illustrated figures and precise descriptions which make it an excellent reference for the CDMA network engineers even to an novice of CDMA.

Besides, G. Heine's (98') "GSM Networks: protocols, terminology and implementation" is also a good reference for the relevant topics.

Masterful and thoughtful book on post-critical perspectives.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-18
Changing Literacies is composed of three parts: (1) critical literacy and cultural perspectives; (2) literacy and social justice; and (3) literacy, new technologies and old patterns. Within these three parts, the book explores inter and trans-penetrations of the pedagogical and the popular. Locating "critical" as "an essentially contested concept" (p. 42), Colin Lankshear presents an impressive work on post-critical perspectives. Post-critical because the book moves beyond an analysis of the ways in which human possibility has been impeded by educational theory and practice. The book provides a deep analysis about the ways in which capitalism swallows any attempt of democracy and social emancipation and how this process is connected to the new work order. At the same time, the book offers new horizons of critical perspectives in which language, technologies, and re-conceptualizations of social constructions move us beyond the realm of realities. Colin Lankshear and co-authors James Paul Gee and Michele Knobel deserve, without hesitation, outstanding recognition for this book.

These easy open books are great -- the page sizes are staggered so that parents AND children can open them easier. We have both the numbers and the colors books; my eight-month-old son is fascinated with the vibrant photographs. White polar bear in snow, red poppies, black blackbird, green frog, blue fish, yellow sunflower, pink flamingo, orange leaves, gray seals, brown snake, purple pansies, lots of colors in fall leaves.

They are SO easy for little (and big) fingers to open. The pictures are breath taking! I hated to return them to the library...so...I'm buying our own set! They are a must have for any infant/toddler library!
