I used an earlier edition when my older son was graduating from high school ('96) and searching for colleges. I found it very helpful. There are so many colleges in California alone that it is difficult to be aware of all of them. This book not only makes you aware of colleges in the west, but gives you valuable information such as directions to campuses, tour and interview schedules, and facts about the schools.

Memorable pictures and puns guarantee quick recall

Reviewer: Sue Alpaugh, English teacher from New Jersey
I was very pleased with my students' responsiveness to Philip Geer's book Simon's Saga, and with its effectiveness as a tool for learning and recalling the meanings of advanced words.

Recently I've been trying out Picture These SAT Words! and its flashcards with my classes. The pictures and accompanying puns that integrate the sound links for word recall are very creative and funny. My students really like the zany ideas behind them, and also appreciate the rhythm and rhyme of the puns. Another excellent thing about this method is that the sound link itself comes as close as it possibly can to the actual sound of the word.

One favorite is the difficult word "iconoclastic." The sound link is Ike Kono's class. The picture shows a teacher, Mr. Ike Kono, writing on a blackboard. His students are seen being "iconoclastic" (attacking cherished traditions). One student is sticking pins into a small Santa Claus doll. Others are raising their hands to suggest the abolishment of schools, tests, and Thanksgiving. The pun below the picture reads: Iconoclastic students in Ike Kono's class.

Another example that really amuses my students is "soporific," another difficult word which means "marked by sleepiness." The sound link given is soap horrific. The picture shows an alert old man sitting in a bathtub scrubbing himself, surrounded by little devils and snakes rising up out of the water. On the floor in front of the tub is a discarded soap wrapper upon which is written "soap horrific." From the bathroom door two old ladies look in on this scene. One says "He used to fall asleep in the bath until he tried Soap Horrific." The pun below the picture reads: He isn't soporific when he uses Soap Horrific.

As with Simon's Saga, I would rate Picture These SAT Words! and Picture These SAT Words in a Flash very highly as advanced vocabulary building tools. The book teaches 300 important SAT words, and the box of flashcards is a selection of 200 from the book. Both are fun and both have their advantages. The book has excellent exercises after each unit that reinforce the sound link and ensure that the words are learned. The set of flashcards offers the added dimension of fun and games.

Placing the Academy: Essays on Landscape, Work, and Identity is an anthology of memoir essays by a diversity of learned authors reflecting upon their experiences as teachers, students, and young adults experiencing the rites of passage. Essays include "On Frogs, Poems and Teaching at a Rural Community College", "The Blind Teaching the Blind: The Academic as Naturalist, or Not", "Levittown Breeds Anarchists! Film at 11" and much more. At times broadly insightful, at times intensely personal, these vignettes offer a unique, soul-satisfying glimpse of the universal quest to pass on human knowledge, and all the myriad ways in which dedicating one's career to that quest can touch one's life.

As a high school guidance counselor for the past 17 years, I have often suggested this book to high achieving and highly motivated students and their parents. They want to know what selective colleges are looking for in the admission process. Richard Moll opens the door to this mysterious process and offers valuable insight about what it takes to get in to those most highly selective schools. The sooner in the high school years that a student or parent gets this information, the better their chances for acceptance to the college of their dreams.

Pledge of Allegiance: Politics of Patriotism in Government schools
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-19
Pledge of Allegiance issues are examined in this book about the flag and related topics. The book could use some updating with more historical information about the topic addressed. For example, the Pledge was the origin of the stiff-arm salute that was adopted later by the National Socialist German Workers Party. The early salute for the Pledge of Allegiance was the straight-arm salute. Francis Bellamy was the author of the Pledge (1892) and cousin to Edward Bellamy, author of an international bestseller that launched the nationalism movement. Edward's book was translated into every major language, including German. Francis and Edward were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and they promoted military socialism. They wanted government to take over all schools and impose robotic chanting to flags. When the government granted their wish, government schools imposed segregation by law and taught racism as official policy. That behavior even outlasted German National Socialism. The Pledge's early right-arm salute was not an ancient Roman salute, and the 'ancient Roman salute' myth came from the Pledge. In addition to the notorious salute, American socialists (e.g. Edward Bellamy teamed with the Theosophical Society) also bear some blame for the notorious symbol usd by the National Socialist German Workers Party on its flag. While Edward and the Theosophical Society worked together, the same symbol was used by the Society. It was used as alphabetical symbolism for socialism, and adopted later by German socialists as their flag symbol. Although an ancient symbol, it was altered for use as overlapping S-letters for 'socialism.' It was deliberately turned 45 degrees counter clockwise and always oriented in the S-direction. Similar alphabetic symbolism is still visible as Volkswagen logos. People were persecuted for refusing to perform robotic chanting to the national flag at the same time in the USA and Germany (to the American flag, and to the German symbol flag). All of the above are modern discoveries (do a web search for "stop the pledge") by a different writer, America's leading authority on the Pledge of Allegiance (the author of "Pledge of Allegiance Secrets"). On the other hand, the author Joel Westheimer completely evades the topic of the Pledge's early gesture, and he seems to be unaware of the recent historical discoveries. It is hard to believe that he did not think about the topic, and one can only imagine that he decided to evade it, though it is unclear why.
