Coleen Grissom 'keeps on keeping on' with her "Novel Approach to Life"

"A Novel Approach to Life" is more than a collection of speeches. It is also a memoir of an extraordinary human being and
is as multi-faceted as its author. Although the speeches cover an array of topics, they all share a common thread. Grissom
approaches each of them with a great deal of quirky humor and prodigious insight. She implores her audience to think rationally,
to view and appreciate life in all of its glory, and always "figure out what you care about and live a life that shows it.
Do attempt brave and important things, and, for heaven's sake, make time in your hectic, sometimes frenetic lives to read
and then make time to read some more." This delightful book is filled with astute observations of life, heartwarming stories
of students and teachers, references to literary influences, and glimpses of Grissom's unselfish devotion to all that she
holds dear. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Dr. Blodgett's book sets a standard for the afficianado of small town history. His ability to place in simple terms the heritage
of a town through its physical development should be studied by those who wish to author anything on their own towns and villages.
He captures the essence of Oberlin, that curious town in northern Ohio, which he illustrates has always been "peculiar in
that which is good" since its inception. It is an invaluable primer for that college town. A+

My daughter is now playing at a Division II program thanks to this book. Her highschool coaches did not offer any outreach
for their female atheletes. The first 40 pages gave us the insight to evaluating her athletic and academic strengths which
assisted us in determining the best program to fit her needs. Sure hope this company produces a basketball guide by 2002
when our son begins his college search.

Conversational and Humorous

Lang's "On Course" was recommended to me by a friend who also teaches at the university level on a one-year contract. To prepare
for my first "real" job after grad school, I bought and read a selection of teaching guides, and "On Course" complemented
my little library nicely. The first thing that struck me is its humorous, conversational tone (never too casual, though),
and I caught myself laughing out loud several times. The humor that springs from this book is born from insight and ample
proof that the author still remembers his time in the classroom and is more than acquainted with the challenge of a group
of tired undergrads who routinely rely on their instructor to get them through the day.
The title, Lang admits, is really "a conceit," as a true one-to-one application of each chapter to the responding week in the semester might not be practical. I pretty much read it all the way through, likely skimmed some chapters because they did not directly apply to my particular teaching situation, but I've already, as Lang recommends, reread certain passages and will continue to do so.
Everything in here, from teaching tips, what to wear, first-day-of class advice, university politics, the mid-semester doldrums to the recognition that new instructors probably do spend too much time prepping for class is just a bit off the beaten path--colored by very recent classroom experience, it seems. For example, teaching guides typically herald the use of some type of ice breaker. Lang, while recognizing the ice breaker's virtue, realizes that its mere use can clash with an instructor's personality and comments that new undergrads are typically subjected to an overkill of ice breakers anyway. Likewise, Lang's chapter on the use of technology in the classroom surprises: while most teaching guides tend to advise, almost push for, some kind of technology in the classroom, Lang discriminates between the many uses of technology and, once again, recognizes that its use has to match the teacher's personality. He then offers suggestions on how to gradually add technology--essentially, staying in our chalk-and-blackboard comfort zone while dipping our feet into the vast ocean of electronics. This chapter, like every other one in this book, offers a variety (I really wanted to say 'treasure chest') of material and suggestions, as well as a section on resources.
It's a strength (and, one could argue, a weakness) of this book that it targets TAs, one-year lecturers, MAs, and tenure-track PhDs at the same time. The reason I imagine it could be called a weakness is because it doesn't dive deeply into specific issues either one of these groups encounters. Then again, the common address serves as a reminder of how closely we work together in this microcosm--always good advice at the start of a career.

On The Wings Of Modernism: The United States Air Force Academy is the unique architectural study of the 50-year-old U.S. Air
Force Academy, examining both its history and the forces both artistic and practical that permanently shaped this long standing
edifice. Black-and-white photographs enhance this tasteful and commemorative discussion that reveals a modernistic institution
with deep roots in bureaucratic and political processes.

I did study at Kent State Uneversity, where this field is studied at high level. This book was always in great demand and
I would advise to anyone to get the book whatever it takes. I also purchased the 5th edition of this ASHE Series in this field
and it really is very professional one. Edited By Mr. Christopher Brown, the book really should be on the table of everyone
who is in this business of higher education administration. The book includes articles about organization, organizational
structure and many aspects so much well known to the people, who are familiar with this business.
