Important Contribution

Review Date: 2002-07-17
Glasker's analysis of the black student movement at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1960s and 1970s is an important contribution to the field of black studies. However, it has importance far beyond this field, as it sheds light on the basic issues of diversity in the multi-cultural setting that has characterized American society in recent decades. He introduces and explains categories of analysis that may be unfamiliar to most readers, such as the concept of bi-culturalism. Like other ethnic groups and interest groups, black students wanted to have a setting where they could represent their own interests and cultural inclinations, but this did not mean that their all-black organizations were separatist or nationalist. Not only did presumeably liberal white organizations find all-black organizations uncomfortable, so did integrationist organizations such as the NAACP. Glasker traces all these cross currents in a sensitive and well-documented fashion. The episodes at the University of Pennsylvania, as he suggests, were replicated at many other campuses across the United States as universities began to admit black students with lower SAT scores from urban settings to help achieve more racial balance. At institutions such as Cornell, Rutgers, and many state universities, the same patterns emerged: black students seeking institutions that would preserve their different values and attiutudes, at the same time that they pursued the achievement of education and professional development that would earn them a place in the mainstream society. The essence of bi-culturalism comes through in the study: the simultaneous preservation of cultural differences and the pursuit of the middle class aspirations for economic advancement. The book should be purchased by all major libraries and by any individual who is interested in this fascinating aspect of modern American life.

The Best Resource...

This book is great! If you're looking for a better way to narrow the colleges you will be looking at, this series is awesome. Not only is the Brown book informative, but you get a lot of the students' voice- helping you decide if Brown is the right school for you. I think the info in this book is really helpful to pick the right schools to apply to, but also to distinguish your aps from thousands of other aps. Ivy league schools like Brown want variety of applicants- and the more specifically you can tie your experiences to opportunities available at the university, the better your chance of admission. It shows you are serious about your application and that you will take advantage of the school's resources- take it from a Brown alum. College Prowler's book on Brown does all that research for you! This book is definitely worth the cash!

"Offers invaluable advice from the people who know best-admissions officers, financial aid officers, campus officials, and students. Based on hundreds of interviews at a wide variety of colleges nationwide, it includes essential information in three key areas:

".How to get into college (applications, standardized tests, admissions essays, interview, recommendations)
.How to finance your college education (estimating expenses; using savings, loans, scholarships, grants, and jobs)
.How to manage collge life (what to expect, academically and socially, from each year of college.

"Bruce Stuart, a professional researcher and writer, and Kim Stuart, a trial attorney, are the authors of the highly regarded 'Top Law Schools; The Ultimate guide' and 'Top Business Schools: The Ultimate guide'. They live in Albany, New York."

Looking at the photograph of the authors, looking cute but a little bit geeky with their dress-for-success looks, one has no trouble imagining they did indeed develop good time-management skills in their Freshman years, no doubt knowing exactly when to draw the line between social activities and study. And for Sophomore year, this is the time not to be bullied into irrevocably declaring a major? oops. no wonder....

Building a Scholarship of Assessment

Great text for the history and issues of assessment
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

Banta has drawn together a diversity of voices representing the leading thinkers and implementers of assessment. This diversity of one of the strengths of the book, as it offers the reader the opportunity to select from many viewpoints and experience-bases. The content includes a great review of the history of assessment. The articles also build an important and relevant bridge between the scholarship of teaching and learning and assessment. This is not the best book for nuts and bolts ideas for how to do assessment, and readers who are looking for that, would be served by other titles (such as Assessment Clear and Simple : A Practical Guide for Institutions, Departments, and General Education by Barbara E. Walvoord).

Hurrah for the Red and the Blue!

I guess it helps being an extremely old (the actual founding date is debated and discussed within the book) Ivy League university to get your very own historical and architectural guide published.

Part I of the book follows the development of the University from its initial charter through to its march to modern times. Speaking as an alumnus of Penn, I always though the University had an exceptionally beautiful campus, but its rich history was virtually unknown to me. This book makes it clear that the plan for institutional growth required the Deans, Trustees, and other campus leaders engage in detailed campus architectural planning - where, what, and how?. Only now can I appreciate the decisions and compromises made that are reflected by the campus architecture. The authors use the epilogue to address some of the myths that campus students have spread and continue to perpetuate.

Part II of the book is a detailed review (North, South, East, West, and Central campus) of the current structures on the campus. Each building gets its own entry detailing its address, date of construction, purpose, and accompanying photo.

The book is chock full of diagrams, illustrations, and photographs showing the campus and the movers and shakers that shaped it.

This is the perfect coffee table book for graduates of The University of Pennsylvania.
