A penetrating look at Italian Motorcycles of the classic era
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

Before the Japanese decided to take over the motorcycle business, England and Italy ruled the roost, with the Italians leading the way in terms of race wins, style and innovation.
This book covers the field in a comprehensive and most knowledgeable manner.
When I saw my old 1960's Moto Rumi Junior in this book, I knew I had to have it, and I must say, I have savored every single page.
A must have for every serious motorcycle enthusiast.

Japanese Racing motorcycles
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-18
For motorcycle lovers this is the best book in years to explain how and why Japanese motorcycles influenced and changed our world. The modern four cylinder motorcycle engine started with Honda's 250 cc four cylinder racer from the early 60's (looks the same as todays engines). If you like small, complex, hi-tech engines (a 50cc twin, DOHC, 4 valve per cylinder racer that Honda multiplied into a 5 cylinder 125cc racer and again into six cylinder double overhead cam racer) this book is for you. It details it all with amazing photos and history of ALL of the Japanese brands all the way up to the current MOTO GP racers. Two stoke lovers will not be disappointed. It covers with amazing detail a technological era of racing and competition that shows clearly why racing improves a brand. My only complaint is that the book is not hardbound.

The legend lives on!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-24
I found this book to be the most complete history of Mike Hailwood's racing career I have read. The author's knowledge of his subject is encyclopedic and yet manages to be lively and interesting. Mr. Woolett illustrated his book lavishly with many photos that had not been published before. The listings of Mike's motorcycle racing career results in the back of the book will no doubt be used to settle many an argument among Mike's fans about what happened, when and where. My only criticism of the book is about this section. I was at the Canadian Motorcycle Grand Prix with Mike in 1967. It was on September 30th not September 24th as stated in the book. Memories can become confused. But,I have verified those dates with other sources. At the end of the racing on Sunday some of the factory team riders flew in a helicopter to the Toronto airport where BOAC (as it was in those days ) was holding its overnight flight to London. They flew all night and raced the next morning in the Race of the South at Brands Hatch on October 1 - not September 25th as stated in the book. As further confirmation I have Mike's trophy with the date engraved on it. These are the only dates on which I can give an opinion. I have no idea how accurate the other dates are. But, this is a minor flaw in an outstanding book. This is a wonderful tribute to a great man and his racing career. It is the perfect complement to Christopher Hilton's very personal portrait of Mike, A Man Called Mike. I am glad to see renewed interest in Mike coming just before what will be the 20th anniversary of his death, March 23, 1981 at the age of 40. But the legend lives on.

Time capsule, an absolute joy

Covers 1948 to 1957 with plenty of photographs. The text is excerpts from car magazines of the days. Many of them appear to be English articles, but some of them read as if they have been translated to Italian and back again.
But the book transports you back to when you had to imagine, and the authors knew it. The photos from start or finish, some from scrutineering days, and some from out on the road. If you think you like cars, you'll like this book.

Magic of the Mille Miglia

Mr. Pritchard always writes a good book, with a wealth of detail. This book is no exception and goes into great detail regarding the history of the Mille Miglia, the cars which participated in it, and the major drivers. Almost all of the photos are ones that I have not previously seen, and there are a great many of them.

You will not find in-depth details of the cars here, and most of the photos are action shots from the races. This is not the place to look for inforamtion on the type of steering on a 1933 Alfa Romeo, or the chassis layout on a Mercedes 300 SLR. However, if you didn't know that Isetta ran their bubble-cars here in 1954 but are longing to know the details, or if you want to read A.F.P. Fane's post-race report to the BMW factory regarding the 328 he ran in 1938, or if you want to know the course layout of the 1932 race, this is the book for you.

I highly recommend this book for the racing historian. Technophiles or those interested in model car building will find it less attractive, although it does have much interesting information I have not seen elsewhere. I enjoyed it very much and recommend it highly.

Well written, great lithograpy and paper, amazing research.

A true collector's item for the right person. Being a gearhead is a requirement to beginning to understand this work. If you just want to learn about Offy's and Miller's, I recommend "Offenhauser".

I've had this book for 10 years now. It and Smokey Yunick's trilogy are the only ones I regularly reread AND enjoy.

Racing a mirror in a nutshell
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-31
The book "Mirror Racing" by Guy Wilkins is an essential resource for any of the 70 000 mirror owners out there who are serious about racing at club, national or international level. The book deals in detail with essential elements such as starts, finishes and most places in between, and also cover issues vital in boat setup and maintenance. This is one of the most comprehensive manual on Mirror racing I have read, and there are no similar books that compare with the detail and quality of the information. Other books such as Sailing the Mirror by Roy Partridge do not delve as deep into the intricacies of sailing and racing, and accordingly are not as valuable resource as this book. While it deals with complex issues the book can also be used by beginners/intermediates looking to catch up to the rest of the fleet. Overall a thoroughly worthwhile read that will benefit any mirror sailor, be them 8, 80 or any age in between.

Classic reference book on model car racing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-11
One of the most sought after reference books on the hobby of model car racing. This wonderful book features 173 pages of detailed text, illustrations, photos and diagrams on model car racing technique, tactics, tune-up tips, track construction, car repair, tuning and maintenance, tabletop racing, free form racing, radio control cars, fuel powered racers, and more. Truly a great vintage reference and one that has become quite a sought after item. Be sure to get the Hardbound edition as the paperback has some deletions.
