The Indianapolis 500 Yearbooks are a valuable addition to any Indianapolis 500 memorabilia collection. There are various authors such as Donald Davidson and Carl Hungness but all of the authors did an excellent job on these yearbooks. They should be in your collection too.

Another "must buy" for the Indy Racing League fan !

The 1998 Indy Review is a nice follow-up to the 1997 version. This book contains photos, highlights and statistics to every race in the 1998 IRL season. I felt the statistics sections were not as complete as the 1997 version, but it was not enough to take away a star. Another great book for Indy fans !

For those like me that spend every sunday beside your man watching the race this is the book that should be on the coffee table. I found so much information and facts in this book. I didn't have to ask so many questions as to why they do this or why they do that. This is a very fact filled, informative book on many legends of Nascar. A really great buy that will have all Nascar fans wanting more.

In their hooves

Michael Seth-Smith starts his book with the statement all of Europe's thoroughbred horses have something in common. That common something's common ancestors in the Byerley Turk and the Darley and Godolphin Arabians. The offspring of these three British imports quickly took over British horse racing. Their services as breeding mares and stallions were also much in demand elsewhere in the world. For example, horse breeders in Virginia early on used a stallion who was fathered by a colt of the Darley Arabian. He was mothered by a filly of the Byerley Turk.

The author begins with the story of British horse racing. But he goes on to tell specifically of the American, Canadian, French and Italian stories also. What links all five's the breeding roles of certain thoroughbreds. There's also the link of scientific theory. For it isn't just whim, but careful thought, that's behind which horse is raised for what's hoped to be racing and breeding success. For example, the Chenery family wanted a horse that'd top off short-distance speed with long-distance energy. So they bred Bold Ruler, colt of fast parents, with Somethingroyal, filly of the energetic Princequillo family. The result was Secretariat, winner of the coveted Triple Crown by 31 lengths!

Seth-Smith then tells the racing and breeding stories of 11 horses. Those horses are Aureole, Bold Ruler, Fair Trial, Hyperion, Nasrullah, Nearco, Never Say Die, Northern Dancer, Ribot, Star Kingdom, and Tourbillon. Each chapter tells of the particular horse's ancestry and successes on and off the tracks. But why those 11 horses and not others? It's because those 11 set track records for other horses. But it's also because those 11 set the groundwork for horse racing on a world level nowadays. These 11 bring together all INTERNATIONAL STALLIONS AND STUDS!

The book's well-written. There are clear pictures of each horse. The information's to the point and timely. For the impact's still felt today.

This book really has it all. It gives you details about AJ Foyt's life and puts them into an emotioanl context that allows you to visit his world. On the other extreme it gives you a window into the world of this brave man who could not go fast enough. You get the feeling that you are really learning about the man himself. The relationship with his father is a beautiful one and if you are not careful can bring a tear to your eye. AJ Foyt certainly has 'the right stuff.'

Excellent Autobiography

Review Date: 2007-06-02
I have many books about the man and the machine but as you would expect the best details come from Black Jack's own pen. Excellent information especially his pre Grand Prix life and Cooper years which aren't covered well in other Brabham books. Great photos from his personal collection. Best of all you get his true feelings about his career, life and specific incidents.

This book is a must have if you are a serious fan of the history of Formula One.
