this is a real nice photo book of the late forties dry lake hot rod history. The numerous high quality (mostly in colour)
pictures of this era give a real nice flavour. The pictures were taken by a professional photographer and it shows, this is
not your fuzzy, discoloured family photo album. Together with the text (short stories from numerous participants of that era)
gives this book a real good impression. Recommended.

A Rich History Of Triumph And Tragedy
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-05
Review Date: 2007-03-05
Between the years 1875-1902, a dozen black jockeys were aboard winning mounts 16 times in the Kentucky Derby. There hasn't
been a black jockey in the winner's circle since Jimmy Winkfield 105 years ago.
In an information-packed 110 pages, authors James Robert Saunders and Monica Renae Saunders takes the reader back to a forgotten period in American history that was yet another victim to the hate of institutionalized racism.
Biographies of the 12 jockeys are richly supplemented with an overview of society and the sport, along with background material that dates back to slavery, when most jobs in the plantation stables were done by slaves & jockeys as young as 10 or 11 piloted the Thoroughbreds in races throughout the nation.
How bizarre it is that opportunities in the sport that began with slavery were then destroyed by slavery in the guise of Jim Crow. The reverberations are still felt today, as opportunities at the top levels of the sport have remained difficult - if not impossible - for blacks to achieve.
The appendix includes lists of champion jockeys, trainers who had runners in the race and owners who had starters in the field. The Thoroughbred owners include Berry Gordy and Stanley Burrell, better-known as MC Hammer, whose racer was aptly named, Dance Floor.
This is a story of triumph in the face of great odds and the tragedy of a nation that seeminngly can't ride fast enough away from the real history of racism in society & sports.

This Book is the Holy Grail of Thoroughbred Handicapping

I grew up dreaming that someday I would find a book which revealed the mysteries of handicapping a thoroughbred horse race.
Blinkers On is that book. This statement comes after 55 years of handicapping the races. I started when I was 9 years old
on my Daddy's knee. The Author, Cary Fotias shows us how to analyze and interpret his pace figures. These numbers when interpreted
by Fotias unmask the Handicapping Mystery. Blinkers On shows us when the favorite will regress and when a long shot is ready
to run the best race of his life. You won't believe what you are about to read. This book is not for beginners. I spent over
a year learning to interpret Ragozine Sheets and Thorograph Sheets just to prepare myself to understand and appreciate Cary
Fotias' masterpiece, Blinkers On. Now, I beat the races every week. My attitude has changed from hoping to get lucky into
expecting success.

Bluegrass portrays the racing world and it's trials, tribulations, and rewards beautifully, better than any other book about
racing that i've read(and i have read many, many books on thouroughbred racing by many different authors). This is an awesome
book and i think anyone who is even the least bit interested in racing should read it.This is the only book on thouroughbred
racing that i've read that talks so intensively about the bloodlines(which are true bloodlines, not made up) of each and
every horse in the story. It was an absolutely wonderful book and if you have never read it, i very highly recomend it!

BMW E36; A British Review

This was my second purchase for my 318is, the first being the "BMW 3 Series Service Manual 1992-1998" by Bentley. Excited
about my first European car and wanting to know everything about it, I read the book nearly end to end.
There are several cutaway drawings that show how the suspension and engines work. I would guess nearly 70% of the pictures are of right hand drive models. The names "boot" and "bonnet" are used to describe the trunk and hood throughout. All of the technologies are explained, from the 1.6L engine, to VANOS and the M3 models.
Production numbers, assembly locations, engine specs are all covered in good detail. Even dimensions are covered for all models. Other models covered are the convertibles, wagons, hatchback, and the Z3 are touched upon. One item of interest is even the warning about the low fog lights and that they can be easily damaged. There is little in the way of racing and a chapter each on the M3 and hatchback or TI models. If you are an M3 enthusiast look for another book.
I wouldn't say this is the best read for the E46, the last twenty pages cover the new model and how it came about from the E36. For a book published in 2000, it is well written and covers the models very well. Perhaps the most comprehensive book for someone who is new to BMW and logically explains the cars. I recommend this book for anyone new to BMW and is looking to join a club or be knowledgeable when people ask about your car or when you are at the repair shop.
