Burnin' Rubber, as the subtitle explains, goes "behind the scenes in sock car racing." After writing over 100 books for young readers, I expected that George Sullivan would know exactly what interests the reader and just how to present the subject. I was right; he does. About 8,000 words, the book is just the right length, taking the reader not only around the track but into the pits, with the drivers and their teams. Two dozen colorful photos, seven (mostly of drivers) by Sullivan himself, seem to capture the action, sound and smell of burnin' rubber. The boys I saw reading it supplied the appropriate noise for narly every photo. Just as they enjoyed Sullivan's books on Indy cars and monster trucks, they are now loving this book also. It is the next best thing to actually being at the track.

anyone who likes watching equestrian events, from the 'high life' of polo to the down and dirty racing action of a steeplechase in the country, should own a copy of capitol horse country. it's a guide of events around the capitol area, washington, maryland and virginia. you'll find out what to wear, what to bring, and most importantly, what to expect when you spend an enjoyable afternoon watching a top notch equestrian event. it's a must have book if you live in the capitol area....or if you love horses. the history is also fascinating. if you like this title, the author also wrote 'equal to the challenge' about the pioneering women in horse sports. give it to a young girl or woman and inspire them to reach new heights. great author and fascinating subjects.

Good for professional and also good for non vetrin. in Europe it is not possible to take a book like this. Most Vetr. can learn from this book too. We are on the race tracks in europe since 25 years with afgaanhounds and since 20 vears in the top, and in this book i found many news.

a must have for anyone racing any sighthound

This book is the most valuable book I own. THE defininitive source for anyone in amature or professional dog racing. In the five years I have competed my Whippets in amature racing, this book has been very valuable. I just used this book to diagnose a severe toe injury that nobody at the track recognized. My local vet would not have known what to do, but my findings in this book led me to call a specialist who confirmed my findings and can perform the necessary surgury. This book saved my dogs ability to run again.

I have used the exams and treatments in this book countless times to diagnose and treat racing injuries in my dogs that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Many times I have left the track saying "I don't know how he got hurt." or "I don't know why he is limping." I went home, and got out this book, and found the answer.

The training methods are very precise and specific. The schedule for conditioning a dog is layed out week by week.

If you run dogs, you must have this book.

This is the best book on ski technique and instruction I have ever seen! Very easy to understand, and just as easy to put into practice! It is as simple as that - 'practice'. In no time, you will realize an improvement in your skiing! Just as I did! And the feeling is great - just fantastic! I am sure you will feel as appreciative as I do of this book and author!!

Amazing results

First of all, I strongly recommend you find the video version. When you see the techniques in real time and stop motion, you will get much more from the instruction. Al Hobart has a great system that can taking a person with zero skiing experience into an accomplished carver in just a few days of practice. With even more practice, you can go as far as your physical ability will take you. Al's methods of moving the center of gravity of your upper body seems odd at first, but it is the best way to make the most of getting on your edge. The steps to progress from a snowplow stance to skiing tight turns at speed is right on the mark. Al has trained many professional skiers with this method and it works. I've seen many skiers going down the slopes without bending their carving skis, but if they followed Al's training, they would be bending and therefore carving tighter turns. Certainly they would be having a lot more fun with greater confidence and control with Al's method. I was a struggling beginner, but with good equipment and Al's instruction, I went from a clumsy beginner to an adept intermediate skier in a weekend.

Finally, what's different about World Cup skiers?

This is the first book to clearly explain how World Cup racers carve the turns necessary to compete. The book clearly describes how to position your hips and torso to carve and stop skidding.
The anatomical detail of angulation matches the theory of skiing described by Howe in Skiing Mechanics.

The book also describes a series of drills to help learn the proper angulation. These are a good way to ease into proper form.

At the Races in the Circus Maximus

Review Date: 2008-10-06
The Charioteer of Delphi opens with by introducing us to a 13-year-old would be charioteer name Scopas. He has come from Delphi to Ostia on the recommendation of Lupus' mother in the hopes he can find a job with one of the racing factions in Rome. Scopus is a bit unusual in that he communicates better with horses than he does with people. Like Nubia he can tell the mood and read the mind of animals. Scopus not only get his change with the Green faction but presents a mystery for Flavia: a horse named Sagitta has disappeared.

Fortunately, for Flavia and company her father has to be away so they (and we) go back to Rome where the races for the Ludi Romani are about to be held. In Rome, we join Senator Cornix's household, including the delightful Sisyphus. The senator has his own seats at the Circus Maximus and is a huge supporter of the Greens. Along the way we meet a rather helpful one-legged beggar, who provides a clue to the finding of Saggita, and Urbanus the racing master of the Greens. Sagitta is found by the four detectives who claim the reward but it was all too easily and Flavia believes there is another more complex mystery yet to solve.

Caroline Lawrence provides magnificent and well-researched chariot races that will be eye-openers for those who think the file film Ben-Hur shows an actual ancient chariot race. The diagram of the Circus Maximus at the front of the book is very helpful in determining where the characters are at times in the book. The writing of the races is exciting and realistic. This book is among the highlights of the series and one that you can't put down.

I liked this book because it is a good story of a girl who visits her neighbor who is old and lonely. This lady (Miss Maggie) tells a story to the little girl who visits her (Ellie) about a doll that she had when she was a girl. For her Eighth Birthday she got a doll with big blue eyes. She laid her doll on the hallway table. Then when they heard a crash. It was the doll. Her Birthday was coming up and they bought a present for her. What happened to the doll? To find out what happens next read this book.

I cry every time I read this darn book...

Call me sentimental, but there's something to this story that tugs at your heart strings every time you read it. And I've read this at least a dozen times.

The story tells of the relationship between Ellie and her sitter Miss Maggie and of the very special birthday gift that Ellie gets for Maggie out of "pure love."

The illustrations are quite beautiful and complement the story very well. A tender story creates a tender heart. This is the best book in the Chicken Soup for Little Souls' series.

McBeath is both clear and precise on all the matters covered in this book making it useful for newcomers and seasoned engineers alike and manages to cover material useful to pretty much any discipline of motorsport.

For planning out the aerodynamic design on a competition car it is unmissable. Don't try modifying your car without reading it first!

Downforce and Aerodynamic Analysis Done Well

Review Date: 2001-11-01
I have now read 3 books on aerodynamics and their application to motorsports. Simon McBeath has done an expectional job of presenting the information in a logical sequence at a level that both the beginner and experienced can benefit from. His style of writing keeps the topics interesting providing not only the technical data needed, but applying it to real world situatuins with valuable photos of high quality.

I found myself more inclined to read this book cover to cover than some novels I have read. A truly excellent book that was better than I had expected it to be. Very well done.

This book is a fantastic read for those just getting their feet wet into the world of cycling. This book covers equipment, maintenance, bike fitting, nutrition, and much more - including group riding etiquette. If you put the skills explained in this book to good use, you will become a better rider. The author uses a very conversational writing style and doesn't put you to sleep with incessant jargon. If you're new to the sport or just need a refresher on a few things, buy this book - you won't be disappointed.

A great book for new cyclists

Review Date: 2008-09-29
This is a great book for those just starting to cycle or for those who wish they had a little more knowledge about the basics. Dr. Peveler begins with the bike its components and fitting. Next he illustrates the various types and designs and what it means for the rider. I have never seen a cycling book help the rider with this very important aspect of cycling. More over, there is helpful information on the body and different kinds of trainings - leg speed, strength/hills, endurance. Very readable with sound advice. A large part of the book is devoted to riding skills and communication. So for those who have ever wondered what they should be doing in a group ride look no further, this book will help answer those questions. And what is more Dr. Peveler demonstrates various exercises that will strengthen the rider and increase endurance. I've been telling my training partners about this book, maybe I shouldn't, so I can surprise them with my new skills!
