Officially licensed by NASCAR, The Sands Of Time: Celebrating 100 Years Of Racing At Daytona by journalist and sports writer Bill Lazarus is the rip-roaring multimedia combination of a splendidly photographed, coffee-table book with an informed and informative text recounting the history of the Daytona 500 automobile race from 1903 to 2003, and enhanced with an exclusive, 60-minute companion DVD of rare Daytona footage. The informative history is brought to life with pictures ranging from rare and vintage black-and-white photographs to dazzling color pictures of exciting races in progress. An excellent gift book especially for anyone who enjoys Daytona racing.

Being a huge fan of racing I have read many books that deal primarily with NASCAR. Most of them can't even get close to this book. Not only is it interesting to me as a racing fan it is also full of historical information that I have never seen compiled in one place before. The side bars are both interesting and informative, if you have the slightest interest in the "birth of speed" I suggest you read this!

What a great book

I bought The Sands of Time at a book signing with Geoffrey Bodine in Daytona. I really just wanted to meet Geoff and didn't know anything about the book. But it turned out to be great! I really enjoyed all the photos from the early 1900s. (There is sand flying everywhere and the grooves around the corners are so deep. And some guys complain about track conditions today!)

But this is not a book that you'll merely flip through to look at its pictures. I started reading and did not want to stop. I've been a NASCAR fan for a few years now but have never really thought about its history..and didn't even know I cared till I read this book. I have a greater appreciation now of why Daytona and racing are so popular. Coincidently I read most of the book while sitting in 500 traffic on Sunday!

I recommend Sands of Time to any race fan. Not only because it covers a subject you love, but because I think it will make you love it even more.

Just what I was looking for

I am planning to build a replica Cobra and wanted a book that showed lots of pictures of the original. This book delivers in spades. As a complete plus the commentary by the author is great, lots of little inside details that I never knew.
Instead of just looking at the pictures like I planned, I find myself reading the text and enjoying the heck out of it.

Shelby Cobra by Dave Friedman

Review Date: 2007-06-02
Dave Friedman doesn't write highly technical books. What he does provide is outstanding pictorial detail of his subjects. Mr. Friedman was the official photographer for Shelby American during the Cobra years, and as such he had unprecedented access to the inner workings of Shelby. His photographs are expertly done and show the cars from all perspectives and angles. Photos include construction shots and detail close-ups of virtually every part of the 260, 289, 427, and 428 Cobras. He also provides a narrative history of the drivers and players who made Cobra a legendary name even in its own time.

I recommend this book highly for all of those who are interested in the Shelby Cobra and its derivitives, including the Dragonsnake and the Daytona. Many photos are in color and provide an unmatched record of these cars as they were at the time of their historical greatness. Model builders will find this book supremely attractive.

If you are restoring a Cobra or building a replica, this is the best source of photographs you will find. Or if you are nostalgic for late 60's roadracing, you will find this an excellent book.

This book is about a girl whose dad is in the Iditarod race in Alaska. But he can't race with his lead dog because she is going to have puppies... so he gets the second lead dog. The musher's daughter wants a dog and on her birthday the first lead dog has puppies and because it's her birthday, she gets to keep one of the puppies. She names it Silver.

I think you would like to read this book because it's about a little girl and how she gets a puppy. It is a chapter book. And it has lots of action. The pictures are black and white drawings. When I'm older, I want to go in the Junior Iditarod.

Silver is a great dog racing adventure with a happy ending

In this book, there is a girl named Rachel who is very happy because she tried to get a sled dog, and gets a puppy. She names it Silver because it looks silver, and has one eye brown and one eye blue. She trains him so well that he becomes a racing dog. Silver was lost and she went to go look for him, and found wolf tracks that led to a hole where a baby wolf was trapped and dead. Silver was behind the dead wolf and he was safe, but he scared the big wolf that was about to hurt Rachel. The dad said that the big wolf wanted Silver to replace the dead wolf. In the end, her dad wins a race and Silver grows up to be a good, strong racing dog.

My favorite part is when her dad wins the race, because it is the happiest part. It was really scary when Rachel saw the dead wolf. This book might be a little too scary for first graders, but it is really exciting for older kids, especially in the parts when her dad wins and when she gets a puppy. This was a great book and I'm happy I read it. By JG.

Silver is a book that takes place in Alaska. 10 year old Rachle is the daugher of a musher. All that Rachle wants is a huskey. One of the dogs gave birth to a puppy named Silver. One day she left the gate open. Then she gose looking for him finds him by a tree. Then get caught in a blizzard.
I think it was a good book and really cool. Sit at edge of your seat excitement. However if I were the athor of this book I would change the ending, because didn't match the middle. By:Savannah

If you are one of many who make vacation plans around NASCAR events or you are just planning to attend an event where travel is required to a relatively unfamiliar track, Speed Dreams is a "must have" reference book. Jay Ahuja goes into great detail on hotels, restaurants and most inportantly...nightlife. He also helps by providing alternative exiting procedures from the track, which concessions at the track are the best and what to expect to pay for them. Having been in racing for many years now, I recommend Speed Dreams to anyone looking for tips on how to make the event more enjoyable...both at and away from the track.

What a resource! This book is filled with oodles of information about each of the tracks in addition to suggestions for great places to eat and points of interest in each of the cities for when you aren't at the track. If you follow the circuit in an RV, camping information is provided for your convenience. Another great feature is that instructions on how to get to each of the tracks is provided. If you attend some of the races or are thinking about it, this is something you should own.

Jim Welch has written a clear and concise book on training sled dogs to race. There are specific examples to clarify most techniques and ample support for the effectiveness of each method. He has successfully condensed the knowledge of many of the world's top mushers into a relatively short book. Consider it essential reading for anyone who wants to reach the maximum potential of their dogs whether they be competitors at the national or local level.

Amazing Photographs and Interesting Stories
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-05
The first thing the reader will see upon opening this book is the amazing photographs taken by Kinrade. But a closer inspection lets you know that this is much more than just a picture book. Each subject's story is extremely well written and insightful and shows how many people are involved in making Winston Cup racing the success that it is today. Evidence of how well the subjects were chosen is shown by the array of drivers profiled in the book. The author chose a retired superstar (Richard Petty), a seasoned veteran (Bill Elliott), an up-and-coming star (Bobby Labonte) and a rookie (Buckshot Jones) to show the differences among drivers in various states of their careers. But the driver profiles aren't even the most interesting stories in the book. Very few people understand the complexity of preparing for an event as large as a Winston Cup race and the author shows this well with the other profiles in the book. Someone has to be responsible for the ticketing of more than 100,000 spectators attending an event and the profile on Frances Goss shows just how this is accomplished. Myra Falkenbury's story shows just how tough it is to supply credentials to the 12,000-14,000 additional media, sponsors and workers attending an event. One of the more interesting stories is that of David Carmichael, who has created a place for himself in the world of Winston Cup racing by cleaning the wheels of haulers and motorhomes in the Winston Cup garage. Each of the more than 30 profiles digs deep into the jobs and personal lives of people that you may or may not have even known were involved in making the Winston Cup Series such a success. This book is a must have for the novice and the long-time Winston Cup fan.

This book covers the full range of the sport as it existed when it was first published, (1982). I raced that era and can say that this book catches the flavor of the time. A must read for any historian of bicycles. The current mountain bike is a direct decendent of the bikes from this day. Stu and Bob... Good Work. what a great price I got this wonderful book for. This is seriously worth putting on your coffee table. The raw realness behind these photos shows the real life of bikers, sturgis, and the lifestyle that is being a biker. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves motorcycles (and the REAL kind, not those crotch rocket p.o.s.'s)

I've GOT to order another copy for my grandfather for Christmas.

When I was Christmas shopping I decided to buy this book as a gift for myself. It may be the best gift I get this year. I've been to Sturgis almost every year since 1980, which is just about the period this book covers. I've seen all the changes Michael Lichter's photos cover. Michael Lichter is a true biker, and it shows in his photography. He loves motorcycles, he loves bikers, and he loves the Sturgis rally. That is clear in every page of this book.

Sturgis by Michael Lichter is a wild beautiful ride!

Review Date: 2005-08-30
I have yet to visit South Dakota and the Sturgis rally, yet I can console myself with Michael Lichter's wild and beautiful photography. Dave Nichols, the Editor of Easyrider, writes a snappy intro that expresses how close to the edge Lichter goes to capture a powerful image and the photos reflect that wild dangerous edge as do some of the people pictured...and of course these are my favorite photos! The "just married" image which is a posterior shot of both the bike and the couple is juxtaposed with sheer perfection -- the young woman's stunning body and the gritty image of the beer cans attached to the bike. You can almost hear the rumble of the bike and the beer cans banging against pavement in celebration of their biker union and this is just one of many standouts. The bikes and the people are more unusual than what you see on the Discovery Channel. Bottom line...If you can't get to Sturgis, South Dakota, this book rocks and if you have been there, you still want this book because it documents 20 years of a very wild ride, gritty, wonderful crazy people, and beautiful American countryside.

Taking into account the difficult task of giving fair representation to BMW's extensive motor racing history, this text serves as the definitive tome on BMW's racing exploits. For the most part it covers BMW's sedan racing from the 60's to 80's, with a smattering of formula car history thrown in, too. The text describes the overall racing history and details quite extensively the technical aspects of the various cars. This is augmented by a fantastic collection of photos of racecars, homologated streetcars, and technical drawings. While it isn't cheap (even on Amazon) it's well worth it.
