I was born in 1951, and didn't really pay serious attention to F1 until Mario made a serious run at the title. This book has gone a long way toward filling a major hole in my understanding of Grand Prix racing. It's a superb book. The writing and the photos are first rate. I wouldn't have imagined that I would find the early cars as interesting as Ludvigsen made them. I had no idea that GP cars had as much power as they did, as early as they did. Coupled with the so-called tires of the time, and the agricultural "suspensions", Ludvigsen has given me an inkling of the courage and skill of the drivers who drove some of those beasts. Now I'm reading Classic Racing Engines, but that will be another review...

A Nice Overview

Review Date: 2003-06-13
This book covers the period very well, giving a detailed overview of each "sub-era" nicely, without reverting into a who-finished-where-for-each-race format. It includes articles from the period from vintage magazines, photos (including some nice color photos from the early '50s) and illustrations on every page, detailed descriptions of significant technological advances, as well as the personalities of the day. It's a nice intro for those unfamiliar with the period, and a nice review for those who are. My favorite part: the chapter covering the "Silver Arrows" from the '30s, Mercedes and Auto Union. Although it's titled "The Front Engined Era," Ludvigsen also covers the early rear engined cars as well, such as Cisitalia's Porsche-designed Type 360, the Alfa Romeo Tipo 512, and, of course, the Cooper-Climax.

Classic Grand Prix Cars provides an excellent history of the Formula 1 era from 1906-60, with liberal doses of vintage black and white photos accompanying information on the sports cars and engineers which powered them. Prior fans of auto racing history in general and Formula 1 in particular will find Classic Grand Prix Cars a keepsake history packed with lively descriptions and technical insights on the cars. Very highly recommended for all Grand Prix racing fans!

I have a modern Mini but my interest has always been in the Classic Mini. I belong to club that started as a Classic Mini club. These guys know their cars but this book is an invaluable resource. I am able to surprise these guys from the knowledge I get from this book. I bought it when I was in London and read it cover to cover on the flight back to the U.S. Of all the Mini books I own, I use this one in my quest to purchase a Classic Mini. This is the book I recommend to others who are interested in one or want to know more about the Classic Mini.

You would think a Mini was a Mini, but you were wrong!

I was deeply confused when a Mini wasn't a Mini at first. People always knew the Mini Cooper, but not the Austin Se7en and the Morris Minor and those vehicles didn't start out as small little cars. After reading the book, you can definately get confused with all the cars and names. In the end tho,you can tell each model apart. For those who wants to get a Mini, don't hesitate to grab one of these books because many sellers would mismatch parts thru different years. Another book to get is The Cars of BMC which is discontinued but worth every penny. Also, another book is John Parnell's Orginal Mini Cooper and Cooper S.

A must have for all Mini Enthusiasts

This is an absolutely must book of paintings for Thoroughbred racing fans. Some of the most famous portraits of racers painted by artist Richard Stone Reeves are featured in this coffee-table book.

For those who are not familiar with the work of Reeves, let me assure you that this book may be the closest you will get to owning one of his portraits. Crown Jewels of Thoroughbred Racing is a winner with daylight & well worth the price.

This is a beautiful book, filled with the talented Mr. Reeve's paintings of famous race horses posed against the background of famous race tracks. I thoroughly enjoyed his narration of how and why he chose to paint each horse at each track. If you enjoyed Royal Blood, you will enjoy this book also. It is well worth purchasing - for your own collection or as a special gift.

Finally, a book for fans of racing and racing art!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-26
What a fantastic book! Michael Turner not only shows you amultitude of examples, most of which are beautiful full colorpaintings of various racing subjects from what appears to be the 50's right through to present day, but he also provides basic lessons that will assist beginners and professionals alike. The cover gives away the content in that the bulk of the book consists of Formula 1 cars, but the principles contained within can be applied to other drawing disciplines. Mr. Turner provides suggestions for the materials to be used to render your artwork and covers all aspects from drawing the car itself to background setting and the various details in between. Rudimentary lessons are provided in the basics of perspective, ellipses, and overall development of the vehicle's appearance from a simple shell to a fully detailed racing machine!

It would be foolish to say that reading this book will instantly have you creating masterworks on level with those in the book, but the techniques contained within will certainly set you in the right direction. I cannot recommend this book enough. As an aspiring artist and racing fan, I often lamented the fact that there were no books that specifically combined my two loves. Thanks to an ad in an issue of MotorSport (which I picked up on a whim) my wish has now been answered! For artists, or just for fans of racing art, this book is highly recommended!

Its a very good book, at the same time similar and not similar to Thom Taylors "How to Draw Cars like a Pro".
I gave this book a 5 star rating, but there is just one thing that was making me feel like giving it a "4", the thing is that the book could have some more explanation about the colouring process, beacause painting is not that simple to understand for a beginner artist. Well, I hope that more books similar to this one will be published and i can promise i will buy all of them. I like it.
Thanks Amazon.

Race Cars and Art - Perfect Match Demonstrated
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-01
There are a lot of photographers specialized in capturing exciting moments in motor racing. On the other hand, painters on motor racing is not easy to find. Michael Turner has been painting racing cars for some years and his works had been published and well accepted by F1 fans.

This book is not one just to demonstrate his works but it actually walks you through on how to draw and paint racing cars. With Michael's expertise in this area, you won't feel lost while picking up the techniques described. If you want to try it out yourself, this is a very good book to start with. Don't expect to become an expert right away but at least you have the expert telling you where and how to start.

This book is absolutely one of its kind, you couldn't find any other like this one.

Ian does his normal excellent job of providing the history of Ducati, with a mixture of facts and passion. Unlike so many other books, Ian gives a thorough treatment of Ducatis past with only the last chapter devoted to the current bikes which we can read about in magazines.

A lot of behind the scenes information is provided that I didn't know about.

If you are a true Ducatisti, then this is a Must Have book.

Review Date: 2006-11-07
Ducati is known for its motorcycles among transportation buffs today, but it switched from electronics to motorcycle manufacturing after a bombing during the second world war - and thus made its name in the industry. What is less well known is the stormy path that led to this reputation, chronicled here in The Ducati Story, now in its 4th edition. Ducati experienced a number of rises and falls due to questionable managerial decision-making processes. This book portrays some of its most famous designers and designs but also charts a company history behind the scenes. Falloon has written over 20 books on motorcycles, including eight on Ducati, but this in-depth survey is one of his best, pairing eye-catching color motorcycle photos with business and design facts.

Remembering Racers Who Gave Their All On The Track
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-13
In photographs and words, Lucy Zeh captures the often beautiful monuments and sometimes the very simple graves of Thoroughbreds, some who are immortal & others who have been forgotten with the passage of many years.

There should be a special link between the breeder/owner of the racers who give so much in the oftentimes difficult life at the track. How the champions - and a runner did not have to be a graded stakes winner for the accolade - are treated in death speaks volumes about their handlers.

Etched In Stone reminds each reader that the Thoroughbred should be treated well in life and with dignity at death.

Beautiful tribute to Thoroughbred history!

I just got my copy of Etched In Stone and thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful book. It is not the slightest bit morbid but rather a fond look back at those equines who have made an impact on racing. Seeing the graves and reading about (for many) forgotten Thoroughbreds brings these long-ago champions back to life. I hope to some day be able to visit these memorials myself. This is a must have book for the racing or horse fan!

This book, paying tribute to some of our nation's greatest athletes, has been long awaited and greatly overdue! Thoroughbreds, especially those from Kentucky (the horse capitol of the nation) have always been admired by all and this book only makes their legends live on more vivedly. With it's pictures and stories of the headstones and the great athletes that lie beneath, the author takes a vivid look at these magnificent beasts. I cannot wait to explore the graves highlighted!

And it easily carried me along on the back of beautiful Arabian stallion, (right behind Dan Marshall.) The books character's are colorful, crafty, humorous and warm. I especially liked the mystical spirit of Walter Farley, who appears throughout the story with wonderful philosophical input. This book is insightful and important with some surprising twists! Especially at the end! I hightly reccomend it! *****

On the surface, "Fate of the Stallion!" is an exciting page-turner of a novel...and a story of horses and horseracing. On this level, Ron Hevener has given us a superior book for anyone 12 years old ...to 112. "Fate of the Stallion!" however, is a great book, and thus is written on several levels. Intertwining throughout is a metaphysical message that points the way to fulfillment through love and the beauty and nature of the mystical and magical. Nahgua is an Arabian stallion who runs as fast as the wind... and is worth his weight in gold. His unscrupulous owner will stop at nothing, including the health and safty of this magnificent animal, to win as many purses as possible, as quickly as possible. When Nahgua was injured, his owner was ready to put him down. Now enter Dan Marshall who becomes Nahgua's savior and protector. Why? What hidden meaning is uncovered? What does an Arabian stallion have to do with Dan's long, lost daughter? "Fate of the Stallion!" winds it's way, effortlessly, to its conclusion, and Dan's fate. Along the way, the reader is captivated, energized and drawn into a story that teaches that dreams can and do, come true. This is a magical book the whole family can enjoy and discover that,"You'll find the right help when you have to."
