My babies LOVE this book

We got this book from the library, but I had to buy my own copy of it. My twin baby boys love it. They are only 5 1/2 months old and this is the first book I've read to them that they are very interested in. I make the "Boo Hoo Hoo" and "Trek Trek Trek" sounds to them all the time and they smile and laugh. Highly recommend as one of the first books to read to a baby, and probably through toddler age.

I promise this is a Very Very Silly book -Loving it!

Somewhere in an icy mountainous landscape, two silly parents are dispairing of their baby's refusal to eat anything - and are BOO-HOO-HOO!'ing loudly.
A small witch appears to gloat over knowing the solution & she doesn't have a lot of willpower bc the second they start their Boo-hoo-hoo! again she Shrieks STOP BLUBBERING & spills the beans - they need to go and track a yak bc yaks (milk) will stop the baby from starving.

The illustrations are fantastic and expressive, from the gloomy yak on the front cover to the dumpy little witch and goony kooky parents.

It is exceedingly silly, I promise you, and a delight to read aloud - especially if you specialise in crazy voices.
Your kids will shreik along and have great fun with the jolly text. Track a Yak!

Victor Masayesva Jr's focus is on Native American life, blending photos and hand paintings to go beyond collections which limit their presentations to one medium or the other. With his background in film as well as photography, Masayesva is well aware of the underlying drama which lies in presentations, and uses them to advantage in a set of powerful images in Husk Of Time. Landscapes blend with portraits and the artist's own discussions of his inspirations to accent both black and white and color shots. A haunting collection indeed.

well overall I think that the book was informative and it had some good tips about middle distance running. However some of the data e.g graphs were complcated and the reader had to draw their own conclusion from the data persented. It was very scientific and at times gave contradicting information which left the reader wondering 'well what should i really do.' Also the perspective was very male oriented and the articles did not include data or experiments with female athletes at all, ONLY PICTURES . I am a female middle distace runner so I was dissappointed with that.

The greatest book ever..

I bought the book used from one of the sellers on Amazon. It was worth what I paid, but this is the 1997 Edition. A lot of info in the book, and maps. Great book to get trail riding ideas from to plan your trip. I don't think I would have paid the advertised price (new) for this book though.

Great Book!

This book should be read by anyone interested in the Ohio trails. The book shows maps, warnings of hunters and anything else that the rider needs to know before the journey is begun.

My two love this book. It breaks the principles of the game into simplistic steps and basic explanations which are perfect for preschoolers. The bold pictures make the book enjoyable for the boys to "read" to themselves sometimes, too.

Good for 4 or 5 year olds.

I was very disappointed when I first looked at this book. It is very basic and hardly seems to provide enough information to be worthwhile. But when I read it to my four year old it solicited a string of questions. So it probably has the about the right amount of information for a very basic introduction to soccer, which is all the intended audience is ready for. Overall I would recommend it.

There are many good trails within the book, but sometimes the maps are quite as good as they could be. Most of the trails are in VA, not really close to DC. It is a good book to have on the shelf!

reading to my seven year old

I read this book to my seven-year old who is very interested in dinosaurs. It addressed his stage and interests very well. He loved the practical details of Fenton's life, much of which might be less revelatory to an older child ( e.. why you need thick tyres on a mountain bike), the self-sufficiency of Fenton's search for the answer, and the process of solving the problem. I was impressed by the way the author avoided coincidence and stuck to an exploration of research method as a way of solving the problem.

When I read " On The Right Track " I was bewitched. The story was about dinosaurs and also it was a detective story.Fenton and Willy were searching about the absent finger of the dinosaur track. They were clever and also they knew very much abaut dinosaurs. So they solved the mystery easily. It was marvellous to read a detective story about dinosaurs. I'll be happy to read B.B. Calhoun's other books about dinosaurs.

For those interested in how forensic science works, then POLICE LAB is a must-read.

Author David Owen presents a great beginning presentation into how forensic science works in regards to ballistics, DNA processing, fingerprint evidence, bite marks, tire imprints, and even handwriting analysis -- and how they can be used to figure out the person who has committed a crime. Using more than twenty true-life cases, from the death of INXS rocker Michal Hutchence to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, Mr. Owen takes us inside the science that helped cracked the case.

Although there are other books that delve deeper into the actual workings of the science behind the science, this is a great starting point for teens interested in the forensic field. Be warned, though -- the book includes several full-color photographs of actual dead bodies, which might not be suitable for everyone. On the other hand, if you're planning on a career in the field of forensic science, you might do well to get used to such things now!

Great Presentation

Review Date: 2004-06-20
This is an easy read for those wanting an introduction to forensics. All the basics are covered: scene investigation, identification, poisons, weapons, fingerprints, ballistics, blood, DNA, etc. Accompanying each subject are a couple of case studies that explain how that particular subject was used to solve a crime. Many of the crimes are well-known and the well-read student of crime will already have a knowledge of them, but there's also lesser-known crimes covered.

What makes this book really stand out is the presentation: the layout is suburb with hundreds of photos and illustrations. For a crash course in forensics this book is ideal.

Practical Investment Management
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-07
This book appears to be one of the more practical and straightforward texts on investments that I have encountered. It introduces the reader to why people invest, how security markets function, what typical investment choices are available, and how they are valued.

The book is the right size (about 530 pages) to be covered in a one semester course on the fundamentals of investing. It provides a foundation for analyzing various securities, including bonds, stocks, convertible securities, and derivatives. In addition, the book provides an exposure to risk reduction techniques, such as portfolio diversification and hedging, that is important for investors in protecting their gains or reducing their potential losses.

However, the book is not without its flaws. The chapter on fundamental analysis (chapter 7) could be expanded to include a discussion of financial statements (i.e., the balance sheet and the income statement) and an addition of ratios related to debt management (i.e., debt-to-assets, debt-to-equity, times-interest-earned, etc.). These ratios would provide the investor more information regarding the risks that are inherent with the use of debt. In addition, the topic on duration in chapter 17 does not include a discussion on the purpose for obtaining the duration of a fixed income security, namely how the price of the security is affected by a change in market interest rates.

Despite these shortcomings, the book will make a fine required text for an introductory course on investment management at the undergrduate level.
