I wish I had this travel planner 10 years ago! It would have made my trips to the races a whole lot easier. From buying great tickets to selecting restaurants,I was able to plan my entire trip before leaving home. The travel tips section was also helpful. The nineteen driver interviews made for excellent reading on the road. Great job!

Solid book, good advice, based on math - truly fantastic

This is a gambling book that looks at gambling in a realistic fashion. The first thing it does is to divide the games into those you can win in the long run (Blackjack (Barely), Poker, Sports Betting, etc) and those that you must lose in the long run (roulette, craps, baccarat, etc). It then explains each game in detail. It explains why progression betting systems don't work long-term, and why money management is psychological, not mathematical. For all the simple games (baccarat, roulette, etc) it provides all you'll ever need to know. For more complicated games like poker and blackjack, it provides all that most people will ever need to know and a firm basis for the serious student.

In the world of BS gambling books, this is a breath of fresh air.

A Single Comprehensive Reference!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-10
I bought this book on the recommendation of another reviewer on Amazon. I am very happy that I did. I have other books on the subject, but none of them are as comprehensive and thorough as this one. It is the type of book that you can scan for pertinent topics, or read straight through! Many, many tips for all levels of runners (very good beginner tips), all ages of runner, including stretching tips, yoga postures for warming up and staying limber, how to prepare for various races, and so many other subjects. The writing is clear and concise. Topics covered include: Training, Racing, distance running with various levels and information on how to prepare for each race (mile, 5K, 10K, marathon, etc.), The Psychology of Running, Nutrition, Safety, Sports Medicine, Aging and Exercise, Walking, and Equipment.

"In this book, Seth Forman sets forth an intriguing argument. He contends that with the postwar decline of anti-Semitism, American Jews could not solely define themselves in terms of their victimization . . . In search of a new, or supplemental identity, Jews embraced the black civil rights struggle, but at the cost of trading their rich spiritual, ethnic heritage for the more hollow, assimilating civil religion of liberalism, rationality, and social/racial equality . . . scholarly in tone and well researched." Claude A. Clegg III, Indiana University, June 1999.

From an educator's perspective the Northwoods Field Guides are an excellent ancillary tool at all great levels. They are appropriate for introductory use as well as through adult level review and education. I have the wildflower and animal tracks guides and am looking forward to completing the set with other tags currently available. My only question now is, when are we going to find more topics?

Does its job

Only book of its type, as far as I know. Went on a wine tasting trip to Priorat, Montsant, and Penedes with my father, and found this guide invaluable. It was practically the only source of information we had when we set out, and it gave us plenty of info for a perfect 4 days of wine tasting. Simple things, like hotels, generally efficient routes through the regions, restaurants, etc., would have been dramatically more difficult to plan without this guide. For what it's worth, she's absolutely right about the tourism office in Falset, they have a giant map of the Montsant and Priorat regions that supplements this book perfectly.

If I have any complaint, it's that she's very liberal in her praise. She is unlikely to tell you when a given winery, much less a region, isn't very good. But so what? The purpose of this guide is to give you enough information to be able to go there and make your own judgments.

A biting critique of national self-aggrandizement
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-07
Notebooks of Elizabeth Cook-Lynn is a diverse collection of poetry, prose, and political views. that questions the all-too-common bias and distortion that permeates retellings of American history. "...the Image of The White American Male as Fearless Explorer and Conqueror, intrepid, strong and brave Seeker of New Vistas going out fearlessly into the Unknown, is well established in story and legend. Why else was Star Trek the most popular television show in the history of the small screen?" A biting critique of national self-aggrandizement, written with intelligent passion and a keen sense for pointing out misdirections and half-truths. Cook-Lynn is especially fearsome in her denouncement of human atrocities, subversions of the democratic process, and cover-ups. "Democracy in 2002 and the Free Press": A disputed election / a pretender president // press coverage / like a flood shrouds circumstances / of political theft, journals stride past in fear / and darkness, faded shawls about their shoulders // but, the FCC changes its regulations / so news organizations / can become conglomerates / ravenous, sanctimonious abusers / of the rights of mankind.

I can't put my finger on it, but this is one of the books I keep next to my bed for when my soul is feeling black. It's simple, home-ey, powerful.

Also, if you happen to be from southern Arizona, it's good to get to know your neighbors a bit more.

When I feel like I'm in an urban jail, I remember the moon hanging over the Sea of Cortez in one poem, I and I remember there's so much more to the universe...

the standard for the Pisgah area
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-25
All the buzz on [..] about this book was true. It is the standard by which all other mountain biking guidebooks on the Mt. Pisgah area of the Western North Carolina mountains must be measured.

Parham's love for this area, and for mountain biking and cycling in general, are apparent in his writing. Also, unlike another guidebook that covers this area, he was thinking of mountain bikers of all ability levels when he made his choices of trails and routes to recommend. The trail reviews are arranged in a very systematic fashion, by location of the trailheads. Parham also includes other valuable information for trip planning, such as area lodging, campgrounds, and bike shops. When planning a mountain biking trip to this beautiful area, this book, and a couple of good maps, are all you need. HIGHLY recommended!
