I could not put the book down, I was riveted to the story line from the beginning, following his growth, learning what he needed to survive thru trial and error. The ending was such a surprise to me.....I am encouraging everyone I know to read this book.
I learned as much from this book as the tomcat I believe. And to me, that is worth it. The care to detail Gordon took gives the belief you are there, with this cat, going thru all he has to, surviving. The human, Dave, is a caring man. Someone you want to cheer on as he attempts to aid in several ways.
I am going to insist my grandchildren, especially the oldest one, read this book. He will learn much and hopefully pass on what he has learned to others.

I have no regrets about buying this rare book. If you're into cryptozoology, yet also have a brain (a rare combo), this is a book that needs to be in your collection.

On the critical side, I may level two accusations that do not go very far toward pejorating the work. Firstly, taken from a continent-by-continent perspective, the coverage is not balanced. Although cryptozoological mysteries-and the oral and/or literary traditions that are often associated therewith-besprinkle the entire globe, the author devotes precious little attention to the boreal zones and none whatsoever to North America! Secondly-and, indeed, this is intertwined with the sparsity of North American coverage-Heuvelmans says next to nothing about sasquatch or some of his cryptohominid cousins, e.g., the central Asian almas and the Australian yay-ho and lo-an (although he most thoroughly dissects the evidence for and against the yeti). But, just perhaps, this second omission can be blamed upon prevailing undertones in the academic community: specifically, it was not until the 1958 incidents in logging camps in rural northern California that the "bigfoot" phenomenon began to attract serious attention.

Romantic, funny and always a touching story. This is the third in the Hill Country series and I've read "Texas Cooking", "Lone Star Cafe" and now "Over the Moon at the Big Lizard Cafe" and loved each one. If you like old fashioned romance, Texas humor and a good read you'll love these books.

In this book, Lindsey Attwood, sister of Laura Draper, is very stymied and unhappy with her life back in Denver Colorado. She has a young daughter Sydney, 8-years-old that is off to spend her first summer in Mexico with a Dad who never wanted to know her until now, strangely enough. Geoff and Lindsey divorced bitterly once Lindsey became pregnant, and he did not want the child. So ever since that time, Lindsey has kept herself and Sydney in a "closet," so to speak in their tiny apartment with nothing exciting happening.
But there begins a turning point in Lindsey's life when she is called on a mission by her sister Laura to help recover stolen dinosaur tracks. And since Lindsey is a skilled palentologist, this is her field. So she drives 1,000 miles to Texas on Jubilee Ranch. She will also have to pose as a horse psychology patient, and it is there that she meets Zach, whom she is attracted to instantly. And whether she likes it or not, she can't stop herself from falling in love.
In horse psychology class, Lindsey finds out about her relationships to people through horses. It takes awhile before she loosens up to a horse, Sleepy, and can put life in perspective.
That is not the only thing though. Never having been a great animal lover, she encounters a stray dog, that automatically takes to her. Mr. Grits is a dog nobody loves-except maybe Lindsey actually will? The story tells this as you read.
Toward the end of the book, Sydney's father brings her back to the ranch early. In shock at the vacation being cut short for Sydney, Lindsey wonders why and finds out that Geoff ran off again from his new wife because she was pregnant. Fatherhood was not in his plans-but there is a single event that changes all that and Geoff changes.
Lindsey is truly afraid of new steps in her life, and once Syd comes back to her, she is all set to drive back to Colorado-for sure. She is afraid to take a leap of faith in new life challenges that will change life perhaps for the better-like it was meant to be.

However, this book is part of a series and they are all the same. Collie, Laura and Lindsey are best friends. The first book, Texas Cooking, featues Collie as the main character. The second, Lone Star Cafe', features Laura and now Over The Moon at the Big Lizard Diner features Lindsay.
In all three books, the main character (Collie, Laura or Lindsey) ends up in Texas on a job that was to take them there only a few days. But in each book, they met a cowboy that was not their type, fell in love after a few days anyway, then they were offered a beyond belief dream job that they had been waiting for their whole lives.
At that point, in each book, the main character had to decide on living their dream or if this cowboy was their soul mate.
All three of the books are good as a stand alone. But read together, one after the other, and it is like the movie Ground Hog Day where the same thing happens over and over and over.......

I was a high school distance runner back in the late 60s and we all knew Bowerman's reputation and admired him and his teams. Even our cross-country coach emulated his training techniques. Heck, we all figured everyone knew who Bill Bowerman was.
This book, for me and others like me, is a great trip down nostalgia lane - as well as providing lots of behind-the-scenes details and information that I found fascinating. Great read!

Whether you are a weekend Musician with little more experience than "chopsticks" on your Aunt's piano, or you are a Conservatory-Educated Musician with a degree in Music Performance, "GarageBand 2: The Missing Manual" has something for you.
David Pogue writes with a level-headed voice, presenting the information slowly while always giving the reader a sense of excitement. I found myself putting down the book for several days, just after reading something new from Mr. Pogue.
My, "I just gotta try that!" excitement is balanced by the "Wow!" factor of learning a keystroke that I did not know existed, or finally learning in plain terms, or most importantly how to double the speed of GarageBand 2.
If you are using GarageBand 2 and looking for "The" Manual to purchase, this is it.

The book has three parts. Part 1 deals with how to construct and edit a song or composition in GarageBand. Pogue explains how to use GarageBand loops (repeated musical patterns) and how to create original material. The most helpful feature in this section is the tutorial that takes the reader through the construction of a composition using loops. Pogue offers a couple of ideas about constructing music for those new to the process.
The pluses and minuses of using the onscreen digital piano, the Mac keyboard as a piano, and using a MIDI keyboard are discussed. Pogue supplies information needed about additional equipment and software to enhance GarageBand. Websites are listed where equipment and software additions can be purchased and downloaded. Pogue lists prices and states what can be expected from each purchase. He also lists many sites where information, tutorials and software are available free.
Part 2 tells you how to mix tracks and export music to post it on a website, how to export it to iTunes, how to burn it to a CD, or how to use it as background music in iMovie, iPhoto, or iDVD. The problem with GarageBand is overcoming the amount of memory and power it requires, so there is troubleshooting information as well as recommendations about shareware add-ons and Web sites to visit for additional help.
The Appendices round out the book with invaluable information about all of the menus, keyboard shortcuts, and a section on musical concepts for the non-musician.
Pogue is an entertaining writer who is very capable at explaining difficult concepts to novices without boring veterans. GarageBand was designed to enable the writing of music with little or no musical training, and Pogue writes so that the music theory involved in the program can be grasped by the inexperienced. I'm a person whose limited knowledge of music and music theory is self-taught, and I found this book very accessible and enjoyable. I guess the best judge of this book's quality is how much my stepson, who is a musician, has been enjoying it and GarageBand. He's never been one for the books, but he's practically joined at the hip with this one.

Toby, a Show Siamese, is taken on a picnic by his foolhardy owners, and answers the mating call of a feral female. A previous reviewer must have skimmed, citing that Toby has the greatest sex in his life. Yeah, well, Toby has never been put to stud, so he's never had sex and I doubt he'd make comparisons. The greatest sex to an animal is the current sex. It's an instinct, not a romance. Toby returns to man, drawn by the smell of bacon but his mating results in a litter of 4 kittens for the she-cat. Fifty years ago, when I was young, people did not have pets spayed, so the she-cat's care of her kittens reminded me of the delight in watching domestic cats rearing and training their kittens. Hopefully, in today's world, most pets are being neutered.
The story continues with the fate of the kittens, the wide variety of edible game for them in Australia, and it continues to follow the life of the one tom cat from the litter. Particularly upsetting was his encounter with an abandoned mixed terrier dog. Dogs have an even smaller chance of survival on their own. And, of course, that is the ultimate message to be found in this absorbing story featuring a wide assortment of exotic creatures, even a flood, that impacts the life of this cat.
The book is a fascinating and educational read.
