Having spent the last three and a half years researching dinosaur tracks for my Ph.D., I have started to use Thulborn as an almost biblical text ! The clarity and depth with which he writes has drawn life into the subject of dinosaur tracking. Expensive..... but you pay for what you get. Phillip L. Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of the U.S.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-16
"Dinosaur Tracks and Other Footprints of the Western United States" written by Martin Lockley and Adrian P. Hunt is a gem of a text book covering dinosaur tracks left by dinosaurs millions of years ago. It not only tells you how to observe and record the trackways, but gives you the areas in which trackways have been found throughout the Western United States.

"Dinosaur Tracks" names the trackways, gives an explaination as to how the tracks are preserved and where are the tracks...incorporating interpretation of fossil footprints along with track assemblages is found with the pages of this book. We see tracks throughout time and the book touches on conservation and preservation of trackways.

There are 7 major chapters in the book and they are as follows:

An Introduction to Fossil Footprints
Ancient Tracks: The Paleoxoic Era
Archosaur Ascendancy: The Triassic
Days of Dinosaur Dominance I: The Jurassic
Days of Dinosaur Dominance II: The Cretaceous
The Age of Birds and Mammals: The Cenozoic Era
Tracks Galore, and What They Can Tell Us.

The footprint sites and exhibits in the Western United States covers the following states. Arizona with Lake Powell, Museum of Nothern Arizona, and Tuba City. California with Raymond Alf Museum and The University of California at Berkley. Colorado with Dinosaur Ridge, Dinosaur Valley, Purgatorie Valley, Rancho Rio, and University of Colorado at Denver. Nebraska with Toadstool Park, Ogallalla National Grassland. New Mexico with Clayton Lake State Park and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. South Dakota at Hot Springs Mammoth Site. Texas with Dinosaur Valley State Park. Utah with The Molab Vicinity, Prehistoric Museum, College of Eastern Utah, The Vernal Vicinity, and The Warner Valley. These sites are covered well within the pages of this book.

There are diagrams and pictures of the actual footprint trackways and the explaination as to what type of dinosaurs or animal make the tracks. There is adequate discussion as to why they are what they are.

I found the book to be written like a text book, but with a style that keeps you interested about the subject at hand. The is excellent discussion and the book is well reasoned out. "Dinosaur Tracks" is a book for the serious dinosaur enthusist... this is a college text and reads like one, for an audience that is either taking geology or paleontology. I gave "Dinosaur Tracks" a solid 5 star rating for an excellent presentation of the subject and an interesting book about dinosaur footprints and their interpretation.

THE DINOSAUR TRACKERS' 'MUST HAVE'!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-12
This is the most essential (to serious professional and amateur paleontologists) book on dinosaur tracks that has ever been published, and that is probably the reason it is still in print after eleven years. A few words of review will not do justice to this book, which has 71 contributing authors from all over the world! It includes: Dinosaur tracks and trackways so old that they were produced when only about 3% to 5% of reptiles were dinosaurs; A detailed scientific description (also photos and drawings) and naming of Brontopodus birdi (the tracks and trackways of huge Sauropods of Texas and elsewhere); Detailed photographic, graphic, and geological description of the Briar Site, a huge Sauropod trackway site in Arkansas; Description of Pterosaur (non-dinosaurian flying reptiles)foot structure (skeletal), as it relates to Pterosaur tracks and trackways; Details of magnificent Iguanadontian footprints in the Waelden of East Sussex; Dinosaur foorprints of Western Canada; Comparison of ratite footprints and trackways with tridactyl footprints and trackways reasonably attributed to Mesozoic dinosaurs; An important examination of dinosaur trackway beds of the Gulf Coastal Plain of the U.S.A.; Footprints of 'swimming Sauropods' in Morocco; "The Stance of Dinosaurs and The Cossack Dancer Syndrome"; Detailed analysis of elongate dinosaur tracks (plantigrade tracks), with demonstration that 'creationist' claims that some of these are 'man tracks' is completely wrong; and descriptions of dinosaur tracks found in countries across our planet. Really, what is mentioned here is a mere drop in the knowledge bucket of what this essential book has to offer to those of us who realize that dinosaur trackws are the most direct 'window' from which we can 'view' the paleo-environments, life styles, and dynamic abilities of the living dinosaurs that left an abundance of tracks across our world. Do not make the very serious mistake of not having this volume on your book shelf when, inevitably, it becomes no longer available. Serious about dinosaur track studies? If so, GET THIS BOOK! It is a reference that will be become a treasure over the years.

A great book about the "Greatest Race"

Review Date: 2001-04-10
When two men raced each other from Mill Valley, California to Stinson Beach (then known as Willow Camp) in 1904, they probably never realized that their race would evolve into more than just a race; it would practically become a cult following. While only a little over 7 miles, the Dipsea Race is known for its steep slopes, long stairways, dangerous terrain, and gorgeous scenery, as well as its handicapping system which, in the past, has resulted in 69-year-old men and 9-year-old girls winning the race.

This book, by Barry Spitz, does a wonderful job of chronicling the amazing history of the second oldest race in the United States. While much of the book focuses on the actual races, one of the things I liked the best about the book was the short paragraphs telling interesting, sometimes humorous, stories about each of the races. The book also includes a fold-out, full-color topographical map of the course.

If I could make any improvement to the book, I'd include more photos and make at least some of them in color. While the photos inthe book now are nice, they don't come close to conveying the actual beauty of the race.

This is definitely a book for anyone who knows and loves the Dipsea Race(like me!) or anyone who is interested in the history of cross-country running in the United States.

Waldin's knowledge of his subject is immense but conveyed with an ease.

He is clearly no stooge to the grand marques and is forthright in his opinions without being pompous.

Whether you're a wine lover or merely someone that loves the countryside, this book is really all you'll need for a terrific week in Bordeaux.

Only book of its type, as far as I know. Went on a wine tasting trip to Priorat, Montsant, and Penedes with my father, and found this guide invaluable. It was practically the only source of information we had when we set out, and it gave us plenty of info for a perfect 4 days of wine tasting. Simple things, like hotels, generally efficient routes through the regions, restaurants, etc., would have been dramatically more difficult to plan without this guide. For what it's worth, she's absolutely right about the tourism office in Falset, they have a giant map of the Montsant and Priorat regions that supplements this book perfectly.

If I have any complaint, it's that she's very liberal in her praise. She is unlikely to tell you when a given winery, much less a region, isn't very good. But so what? The purpose of this guide is to give you enough information to be able to go there and make your own judgments.

Waldin has done it again! A terrific read.

This is a writer that really knows his subject. But his knowledge is conveyed in such a way that he doesn't make the whole subject of wine intimidating. Nor does he patronize his readership.

Monty Waldin is one of the few wine writers out there that both literally and metaphorically is willing to get his hands dirty; he goes to these vineyards, he works on the vines and the soil and he is not beholden to any paymaster.

WARNING: It'll make you want to go to Tuscany.

After running with a perennial State Championship Cross Country team in High School, I got better in College, but we were never as good as a team. This book taught me why. I picked it up 24 years after high school and used the techniques and information to train and place in our local Corporate Challenge in 800M 6th, Mile 8th, the 5000M 8th, and the Duathlon 2nd. That wasn't bad for a 5'9" 180lb chub.
Great information all around.
