Horse Race Betting Using Track-proven methods!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-24
A simple, proven system of picking winning horses. Shows the beginner in a few easy lessons how to be his own handicapper. Shows the experienced race-goer a new type of long-priced, real best bets that have won with astonishing consistency in different months and in different years. Text includes reference rules, glossary, and examples of how to calculate and make a winning bet. 183 pages plus list of major tracks. Sequel to "Payday at the Races." The necessary requirements for each of three of the most powerful types of selection are presented in a nutshell so that each can be recognized almost at a glance. No stone was left unturned in making sure that the "power plays" would win reasonably often under all conditions. Tests were taken at all major tracks but it was demonstrated that these methods also would work well at small or "minor" tracks, which hitherto have been the bugaboo of most amateur handicappers. If these methods continue to produce such astounding results, the reader should have little hesitancy in conducting his operations with the utmost confidence.

Beyond the Reach of Time and Change: Native American Reflections on the Frank A. Rinehart Photograph Collection features one hundred photographic portraits taken during the very late nineteenth century by professional Frank A. Rinehart. Rinehart practiced his trade upon Native Americans in their traditional dress during the an event known as the Indian Congress; his landmark photography, which unlike that of others did not pander to shameless stereotypes, rests in the Haskell Indian Nations University today and is widely regarded as one of the best photographic documentaries of the era. In addition to the powerful black-and-white photographs of individuals and groups from a wide variety of native tribes, Beyond the Reach of Time and Change features 14 essays by modern Native American writers, artists and educators - including some descendants of the individuals photographed - offering various reflections upon the role of these timeless images in their heritage. Highly recommended for native studies shelves and personal collections, and an emotional collection to page through.

You can tell from Publishers Weakly's humorless, ignorant, and anti-intellectual "review" that this is an intelligent and significant book, which therefore doesn't matter to those who see books as commodities.

Barbara George and her husband Robert were the stalwart publishers of VeloNews, a publication focusing on velodrome racing, some years ago. This book offers a complete view of bicycle track racing in the 70s geared toward young riders. Photos by Robert are excellent and document that era most effectively. The George's offered models for those who followed (i.e. "No Brakes!"). A must for the bicycling history collection.

Penguins in Antarctica....... On a bike ride??
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

Okay, you've read every bicycle adventure book on the market in the past 20 years. You've read "Pedaling to the Ends of the Earth" and "Miles from Nowhere." They carried you on long adventures.

But in "Bicycling Around the World," you're going to sweat, laugh and cry right along with Wooldridge as he takes you on the fifty best adventures that have ever happened to a long distance touring cyclist. Once you read the first episode that will startle your senses, you won't be able to stop. Each chapter draws you uncontrollably into the next adventure.

He mesmerizes readers into the astounding world of a long distance touring rider. Personally, I never expected to meet a cobra face to face, but I did in his book. I have never seen a grizzly bear, but I smelled a grizzly's breath in the first chapter. Who would have thought anyone could walk across America on his hands? You'll meet Bob Wieland in the fourth chapter and you will never forget him.

How many cyclists ride for 13 years non stop? Stan is still out there on the road as you read this review. He's living the dream. But he's not alone as the casket man rolls down the highway with his own amazing adventure. He offers secrets that few contemplate.

The raw adventure moments leave you sweating bullets, but then, Wooldridge pulls you into 15,000 foot passes where you're faced with 12 foot condors flying 30 feet off your handlebars. Is there a favorite chapter in this book? That depends! The chapter where he meets a family of penguins in Antarctica on his bicycle must take the cake as the most incredible experience anyone has ever had on a bicycle.

The subtitle to the book is, "Tire Tracks for Your Imagination." What I liked about the cover stems from the fact that he's inside the highest railroad tunnel in the world at 11,000 feet on Corona Pass in the Rocky Mountains. But it could be anyone as it's a black silhouette. It could be you. It could be me.

He even shows readers "How to Live the Dream." His special section: "Everything You Need to Know About Touring" offers sound advice that will start any novice off on the right foot.

Finally, this is one heck of a read for anyone who loves adventure. It carries readers off to six continents and six times across the United States. It inspires hope, engenders enthusiasm and optimism for the future.

One of the best you'll find, from one of the last great pioneers in research. Though somewhat dated, you'll find all the classic stories here retold in their entirety. Many little details often left out in other sources. One of my first purchases on the subject back in the 1970s, and recently re-discovered after ten years lossed in my garage. Thank God for the recent move to my new home, a lot of things are being located once again!

Can You Catch Them?

Review Date: 2004-06-01
Track and field is the one sport were an athlete by there single effort of running, jumping, or throwing can establish there superiority over all competitors. Michael D. Davis the author of "Black American Women In Olympic Track and Field" writes an inspiring story of how African American women rose in Olympic Track and Field. Until 1948 Black American women were not allowed to compete in Olympic Track and Field despite there outstanding in the sport. Davis glorifies athletes like Alice Coachman, Mae Faggs, Wilma Rudolf, Earlene Brown, Willye White, Wyomia Tyus, Edith McGuire, Chandra Chessebrough, Evelyn Ashford, Valarie Brisco-Hooks, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Jakie Joyner-Kerse and many more. He tells about there life stories and the many adversities they had to go through. These women were said to be manly and had to undergo criticism from newspaper writers and television and radio host. For three generations black women have played a major role in the Olympic track and field events and still continue till this day.
Davis includes illustrations of these great athletes, this helps the reader envision what the conditions were in those times. These stories are in great detail and reveal fascinating information about these female runners, jumpers, and throwers. Some of the athletes still alive praise this book for the dedication Davis put into the writing of this book. There are a few negatives about this book, the writing sometime drags on and drifts to other athletes off the topic. Although the reading about some unknown athletes can be boring, it is interesting to learn about these different people. The book is easy to understand and read, it is overall a wonderful read and I recommend to any athlete who would like to be inspired by other great athletes.

Beautiful and Familiar

Luci Tapahonso delivers another beautiful collection of poems and stories centered around her Navajo culture. Like most of her works, her emphasis is on family and community, and on the ties that bind us invisibly and lovingly to each other and to our homeland. The stories and poems are at times touching and funny, revealing the human being behind the sorrows and joys of everyday living. If you like happy endings, family values, and good old-fashioned heartfelt love, this will become your favorite book. It is at once beautiful and familiar -- these are your experiences and emotions as much as the poet's, whether you are a Navajo or not. Don't skip "In Praise of Texas," in which the narrator reflects the thinnest hopes and dreams which live in all of us, and which "blossom without any urging on our part" (13)
