Inside Classic Rock Tracks: Songwriting And Recording Secrets Of 100 Great Songs, From 1960 To The Present Day

Rooksby does a great job of analyzing notable songs from the last few decades and explains what makes them effective. Some of his observations are funny too. I recommend this for anyone who is interested in songwriting and production, but is bored with the usual "How to Write Massively, Successful Hit Songs in 27 Easy Steps" format.

I bought this book sight-unseen because it was a bargain book and I was trying to get over the $25 free shipping limit (hey, I'm honest). The online description was intriguing enough, but I was very surprised when the book arrived and surpassed my expectations. Physically the book is very attractive, and the low page count is deceptive because the book is larger than a normal paperback. The writer has very excellent insights about the music tracks spanning four decades, and he peppers his writing with biting wit. Definitely recommended!

If you really want to understand COM you would read this book. I was impressed by the elegance of the example code. The book basically illustrates it's concepts throught the iterative development of 2 examples. Most of the other books I have looked at that attempt to explain COM are fluff.

It's too bad the book is out of print. I don't know how people will understand COM without it.

Hopefully, Kraig can get it up one more time for COM+

This book is big and heavy. I tear it into parts so I can carry it to work on daily bases. If one don't want its copy, pls send to me. I would appreciate a second copy of the book.

It is the best book because you can't reach com nervona without it..not even essential com. One must read it several times during different stage of understanding. It is lengthy by detail and author's style. It is dificult to understand. But it provide insight that no other books ever touched. This is not a book to teach you COm/OLE. It is a reference or an encyclopedia. However, just like ARM and "The C programming language", the reference you have to read cover to cover... eventually...

The often forgotten ingredient to the enchantment

Yes, very few music fans are actually aware of the role of music producers in the making of timeless (or in more subjective terms, special) recordings. Richard Buskin's opus, which begins with a passionate foreword by Brian Wilson, will help to clarify the work of past and present key figures in the record production world. To the initiated, the testimonies, anecdotes and other episodes that once were only confined to the control room come to life as the living proof of the utmost importance of such professionals in the making of the songs we all love, showing that they often need far more than just "good ears". Part diplomats, part businessmen, part psychologists, part marketing experts; record producer helped to shape music as we know it today. As a final comment, unlike Mark Cunningham's book (which is also fantastic, by the way), this one is not only confined to the UK scene.

A great look at behind-the-scenes heroes

While, no question, musical talent speaks loud and clear, a good producer and a good engineer sure help raise the volume level. This is a great collection of anecdotes from some of the top people in both areas (sometimes they're the same person!). George Martin, Sam Phillips and Quincy Jones you probably know, but the insights of others like Bob Rock (Metallica), Norman Smith (Pink Floyd), Bill Price (The Sex Pistols), Roy Halee (Paul Simon), Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones) and Leiber and Stoller (Elvis, The Drifters), as well as everyone else featured here, make for fascinating reading about what goes on in the studio. Hope there's a Part 2 somewhere down the road!

Ranking my favorite running books is like choosing favorite children. You love 'em all equally, right? While the Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is a better literary achievement and Once a Runner is a more believable account of what it is like to be a runner, there is something special about Iron Duke that sets it apart. A good read for young adults and runners Iron Duke has that rare combination of great story and heart; Tunis certainly caught Lightning in a bottle with this one! But don't take my word, read for yourself.

This isn't just a book about an athlete. Sure, it's a book about a man who defeated poverty and overcame adversity to become one of the greatest Olympic gold medalists.

But Jesse Owens is honest about the turbulent times he endured after the Olympics were over. Just as importantly, he also tells the story about how he almost let his faith in God fall along the wayside. Faith, family, and school are all important given important places in this book.

This is the best book i have ever read about Jesse Owens. It tells you about the tradegy of his childhood and how he was almost killed in a freak farming ancident. Then it tells you about his glourious triomph in the olympics. Then tells of his quick glory and how he was robbed of all his money. Jesse Owens and Steve Prefontaine are the greatest runners ever.

While it may appear that some of the information in this book may be a bit dated, don't let that put you off. This is still one of the best running books in print. It gives down to earth advice and is certainly inspirational. I first read this one when it was published and still give it a read ever few years. Highly recommend this one.

Harrower deftly enables the stage to transform into a moving poem. This is a not only a beautiful play but a stunning piece of literature. A recommended read for anyone who appreciates a finely crafted play.

A beautiful play about a Scottish woman's moral awakening.

Review Date: 1998-07-28
Scottish dramatist David Harrower's KNIVES IN HENS is an eerie and startling play that explores with conviction and an almost off-hand surrealism the connection between language and the world one inhabits through it.

Focusing on a trio of characters in a God-fearing rural community, Harrower paints a stark and coarsely poetic portrait of what happens when one begins to question the very ground on which one walks. Specifically, Harrower centers his attention on a character simply named Young Woman, whose naive sense of the world and her own impulses is eroded throughout the progression of the play, as she discovers the power of language. her own sexuality and the strength of her imagination.

A blindly devoted wife living in a private linguistic and metaphorical world informed by a sheltered upbringing in a pre-industrial village in an unidentified country (although the rhythms of rural Scottish speech color the text), Young Woman ventures outside her field one day to! have her grain milled by a local hated figure of the Miller Gilbert Horn while her husband Pony William tends to a pregnant horse.

Young Woman's encounter with Gilbert Horn serves as the catalyst for her awakening. He provokes her and stirs in her a desire to give expression to her thoughts through the act of writing them down, something she fears to do because she believes writing is sinful. To write, she believes, is to defy God, since God is the one who gives an individual her thoughts and to claim such thoughts as one's own, to voice them, is blasphemy.

As the Young Woman's relationship with her husband becomes more and more strained, Gilbert Horn begins to enter her sexual dreams until she feels she must act upon them. Although it may seem beyond cliche at this point to once again have a woman discover the power of her sexuality, of her body, through a man, Harrower manages to make the Young Woman's transformation seem novel and surprising.

By bringing in an elemen! t of the supernatural, Harrower removes the play from its s! ecular framework and places it in a curiously pagan, ritualized world where Gilbert Horb can indeed be a ghost and sorceror as well as a miller straight out of Eliot's MILL ON THE FLOSS.

A bleak, abrupt soundscape of words hurled, then barely uttered for fear of what they would do, KNIVES IN HENS is a powerful play built on a fragile, but elegant collage of 24 scenes that examine the disjunctive relationship between language and identity, creation and authorship, and the manner in which inexpressible feelings can sometimes conjure a reality more profoundly disturbing than the quotidian world will allow.

They're still the same old questions. The big ones that won't go away. They've haunted men and women since the beginning of time, and now they're sending Baby Boomers and Generation X-ers on a frantic search for answers and a meaning.

They nag at rock stars and movie idols, but also at doctors and lawyers and migrant workers and fast-food employees - because they're the essential questions that go with being human in this world...

Why am I empty? Why am I lonely? Why am I here? Why am I afraid? What happens after I die?

This book takes an approach to look directly at the big questions in life and to present answers that really work. More specifically, it presents a living answer, Jesus Christ, highlighting the breathtaking relevance of the Christian message to the questions that haunt every wonman and man.

Greg Laurie is Senior Pastor at Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California - one of the 10 largest churches in America.

This book was right on time for me this year. I was in the mode of creating a debt-free life from this point on. I knew what I needed to do, but Lifting the Burdens of Debt gave me the know how and spiritual support to make sure that I do it the correct way. To date, I must say that I am no longer held hostage by debt. Thanks Mrs. Rogers-Cherry for your very timely and insightful view of debt. When will we get the follow-up sequel?
