If you are one of many who make vacation plans around NASCAR events or you are just planning to attend an event where travel is required to a relatively unfamiliar track, Speed Dreams is a "must have" reference book. Jay Ahuja goes into great detail on hotels, restaurants and most inportantly...nightlife. He also helps by providing alternative exiting procedures from the track, which concessions at the track are the best and what to expect to pay for them. Having been in racing for many years now, I recommend Speed Dreams to anyone looking for tips on how to make the event more enjoyable...both at and away from the track.

What a resource! This book is filled with oodles of information about each of the tracks in addition to suggestions for great places to eat and points of interest in each of the cities for when you aren't at the track. If you follow the circuit in an RV, camping information is provided for your convenience. Another great feature is that instructions on how to get to each of the tracks is provided. If you attend some of the races or are thinking about it, this is something you should own.

High school athletes as well as coaches will love this book. It has great photo sequences and is written so the athlete can actually take it to practice. Lots of humor in it to make the technical stuff actually fun and easy to understand.

A must have book for field event coaches!

I first saw this book a my local library back in 1993 and it has helped me with my coaching at the junior college level ever since. I recommend this book to field event coaches of all levels. I have been wondering where I could buy this book, because no retail bookstore carries this subject. I even thought about telling the library that I lost it and paying for it that way! Thanks Amazon.

BACK TO ARCHER

We liked Jim Black's first novel,River Season, so much that we'd have been happy to hear about any new book he'd written. But we were especially happy that he chose to return to the same characters and the town of Archer City, TX for his follow up. The boys--Jim, Gary and Charles--are a couple years older now and more concerned with girls and such than they used to be, but they're still up to plotting elaborate hijinx and the sorts of youthful male bonding that placed the first so squarely in the tradition of Dandelion Wine. Both the romantic travails and the pranks provide some laugh out loud moments and the relationships are enjoyable and even moving at times.

This entry does lack the gravity that the Sam character provided last time around, the older black man who befriended the boys and taught them some important lessons. But the story acquires depth later on as we get to see how this idyll represents a time i life many of us will be familiar with, of last years with fast friends who we'll have trouble staying close to as life sends us on separate ways.

I remember after my last year in High School I opted not to go to Camp Sankaty Head so I could caddy with my two best friends. But then we had fairly minimal contact through college and for several years after. I was fortunate enough to grow close to them again later on in life and Jim Black (or the Jim Black character in the book at any rate) seems to have done the same. There's something peculiarly satisfying in such a roman a clef that manages to strike home in this way, something reassuring about the universality of the particular. It's a fine book and a worthy sequel to its even better predecessor.

TRACKS is another warm and wonderful novel by Jim Black - the author of River Season. This is the continuing heart warming story of Jim, Gary and Charles as they face all the complicatations of life encountered by fifteen year old boys entering high school in a small town in Texas. Black, again, demonstrates his exceptional skill as a storyteller as he weaves an engaging tale that will keep the reader hooked. These buddies are engaging and real, warm and funny as the story unfolds. The surprises that Black includes are unusual and unexpected. Could not recommend more highly.

With so much chaos in today's world, reading about the antics of the characters in "Tracks" is such a wonderful trip to simpler times. Mr. Black spins quite a tale as three teenage boys deal with girls, sports, cars, and pull some of the best practical jokes ever told. If you want to escape back to the better days of small town Texas living, grab a copy of "Tracks" and prepare to make people turn your way as you laugh out loud at the antics of Jim, Gary, and Charles.

Kelly Dwyer makes a perfect example of how life really is. She shows the troubles of a young women trying to overcome the fears of everyday life. With the help of a ragged winged angel, who offers litle hope, Laura must discover the meaning of life the hard way. Living with the guilt of assisting her father to his death, she attempts to make a new life in the city which appears to be farthest away on the map. This novel shows the much deeper and terrible truth of life. I have read it three times, and each time I get a better idea of how wicked the world really is and not as perfect as we wish it to be. I would recommend this novel to people who are just starting out on their own. I myself am only 16 and already I am more aware of the things in life that real and true because of this novel.

A poetic, courageous story of loss and redemption.

Kelly Dwyer has written what I consider to be one of the most luminous and beautifully written books thatI have ever read. Actually, I have read it four times and I plan to reread it many times. It is the story I wish I had written. With poetry, grace and soul, she writes of a traumatized young woman, Laura Neuman, and her search for her past, herself and her spirituality. I only wish she would write another book soon. I found this story to be so beautiful and so well written that I have recommended it and given it as a present to everyone I can.

An Insightful Look Into Field Biology

At one time, my favorite wild cat was the snow leopard (it is now the caracal, with sand cats, lynxes, bobcats, and fishing cats all placing above the snow leopard, which I still love). So I read this book. I found it very interesting.

While this book dealt with snow leopards, and has an excellent description on the snow leopards by Rodney Jackson at the end of the book, Hillard spends more time describing what it was like for her and Jackson to be on the field, the personality clashes with other biologists, and the thrill of getting to see snow leopards in the wild.

This book will take you to a place you've never been, and make you want to join them (though you won't want to get bit by a snow leopard as Jackson once was).

A great read!

Unlike Mr Crocker, I am not a writer but I certainly enjoyed this adventure as Hymen plods along through life. A veteran of the armed services, as well as having grown up in the very Jewish area of Cleveland Heights,I found this to be a very realistic and funny depiction of life in the late sixties. Two thumbs up will have to do, because that's all I have. I am looking forward to Hyman the Sequel.

Wonderful, Captivating Book for Girls of All Ages

Review Date: 2008-11-10
How refreshing to read a book for girls that focuses on what truly matters: What's inside that makes every girl unique, confident, and beautiful, and not what she looks like on the outside. Brianna Grant's book -- with its warm, engaging illustrations -- shows girls having fun, celebrating with each other, and encouraging and supporting one another in a sisterly way. It also serves to remind girls that they are strong, self-reliant, successful, loveable, and so much more!

My girls love this book! Whenever they're feeling unsure of themselves we sit down to read it together and it helps remind them that they can do anything and be anything they set their hearts and minds to. Brianna's message works for girls of all ages, be they runners or not!

We Are Girls Who Love To Run is a bilingual English/Spanish children's picturebook, told in first-person perspective by young girls who enjoys running for health and for fun. "I am beautiful. When I smile, my eyes sparkle, and my spirit glows for the world to see. Freckles parade across my face. My arms and legs are graceful as I circle the track." Far more than a standard picturebook, We Are Girls Who Love To Run encourages finding joy in life through exercise, and impresses the value of self-confidence rather than allowing oneself to become obsessed with unrealistic Hollywood ideals of beauty. The colorful illustrations, done in a soft yet realistic style, show young women from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds experiencing a shared joy in running. A wonderful and uplifting story; the final page has an assortment of true-life quotes from women young and old who love to run.

The concepts that are talked about in this book, certainly should fall under the heading..."Why didn't I think of that?" There are a few typos, but overall it is extremely easy to understand. And I think it's rather strange that the author mentions nothing about the added bonus; in his description, of the book. "The added bonus" that I'm referring to, is the fact that this is really 2 books in 1. He's added (after a single blank page past the end of this book) his harness book called... "Harness The Winning".

I'm really very impressed at the horsemanship knowledge that is included in this book, also. I GIVE THIS BOOK A RESOUNDING 5stars ALL THE WAY!!!

I thought the book overall was pretty good, I did notice some grammar errors and a repeated paragraph on page 44 I think it was, but I suffer from short term memory loss anyway so it helped me :-) j/k The money management system in this book is very appealing to me and I plan to implement it over my next few trips to the track.

This book is one of the best books on Track and Field athletics and World Record breakers that I have ever read and I must say that I have read quite a few books since I became a Track and Field statician in 1978. I myself have been very interested in Track since I was young and read about the amazing feats of Bob Hayes in the Tokyo olympics in 1964.I would have to say that this book is very well written compared to the other books that I have read. If you are mildy or very interested in Track and Field Record breakers I would have to suggest this book.

A Powerful Text

'World Record Breakers in Track & Field Athletics' is an excellent record of prominent athletes and their training routines. Gerald Lawson's text is confident and unadorned, and the athletes he cites are significant achievers. Colourful illustrations serve to enliven the prose. So, too, does the Introduction, tightly written by Anna Bolic, the coach of the Hungarian Women's Track Team. An excerpt is worth quoting;

'Gerald Lawson's book is inspiration to our womens of the field and truck. I use this words when I'm coaching the girls and they love Mr Lawson and his prominent testimonials. Mr Lawson warns about steroids and I say to my girls that they should listen as steroids are bad, especially when they promote facial hair and aggressive gesturings. I know they have followed because the team's razor bill is now down to only $800 a week. Mr Lawson also teaches that smoking before an event is harming to the lunks and chesticals, so now they only light up after a run. My girls want to be just like Mr Lawson, without having to wait months for the operation in a pubic hospital.'

'World Record Breakers in Track & Field Athletics' is essential reading for all athletes and coaches.

This book is unparrelled in its information.

A recent resident of Venice, California, I looked out to the Santa Monica mountains from my second story window and wondered where the running trails were. I've bounced around LA over the past few years, running in Griffith Park, Fryman Canyon, Porter Ranch, among other routes, but these new mountains drew me to them.

How to find my way? I ran one morning at Will Rogers Park and asked someone about the trails that lured me away from the traffic and the people. The runner said: "Get Stan Swartz' book!" Thus armed, I searched a book store and found it quickly. It was exactly what I was searching for, similar in style to the wonderful book I had purchased years earlier which depicted all the trail running possibilities within New York City.

Now, eight weeks after placing third in my ritualistic 10K at Descanso Gardens, I leaf through the book almost every morning, wondering which route I will take on the weekend, building up my confidence with each page turn. What I find fascinating is that the descriptions of the routes, the distances, and benchmarks, the terrain, ALL MATCH THE REALITY. I know I am on the right trail; I know when I am half way through; I know when to turn left or right; the topographical maps give me an idea of the ups and downs. Now that I have completed several of the runs alone among this spectacular landscape, I inhale the spiritual aspect of running imbued by George Sheehan and combine it with the practical information provided by this book.

I look forward to trying out as many of the runs as I can, venturing out even to the longest ones at 13 miles. When I can, I will join the other runners on Sunday mornings. The three authors have given me a great gift: the ability to explore historical terrain with the eyes of a contemporary "critter"...a trail runner who feels at one with the wondrous varieties of Nature described so completely by those who have gone before me. Thank you.
