From Fairbanks to Boston is a great read for someone who has never run a marathon (like me). I loved the different personal story of each marathon, and it was motivating to read the experiences of so many first time
marathoners. If you are a runner, then the book can also be your preview guide to the layout and the organization of each marathon.

This narrative by George Sheehan transcends running. Although it is 'sport-specific', Dr. Sheehan has shown us the 'Way', and he does it simplistically. This book should be read by all atheletes, regardless of their particular sport. He is telling us something here...

I'm relatively new to running and haven't read anything else written by Dr. Sheehan...but I certainly plan to.
The man can write. The book is broken into little one or two page essays (maybe former RW columns?) which are, if nothing else, good bathroom reading fodder.
If you're looking for a book which will help you set a new PR, you should probably look elsewhere, but if you're a true running afficianado(sp?), pick up a copy of this book and you won't be disappointed.

A very helpful and enjoyable read. The stories really helped to bring the book into the context of our daily lives. It was easy to relate to many of the families in the book...and Bempechat's advice was reasonable and easy to follw. She didn't make the reader feel like there was an absolute "right and wrong" way, but points out some of the pitfalls we, as parents, all find ourselves in when trying to motivate our children in school.

This book is wonderfully informative and entertaining. Bempechat speaks in language accessible to all parents about the struggles we all face trying to do the best for our kids' education. Her anecdotes and suggestions for dealing with everyday problems, such as homework, are right on the mark. Not at all preachy, Bempechat urges that we think about what works best for us and our families, to help us help our kids do well in school. A must read!

I read this book in one sitting. It felt like a deep conversation that I'd have with two old friends at two in the morning. Calvin and Alvin's voices intertwine throughout the book to give this incredible view of their life which in many ways feels like one life. They say, "This is who we are and this is what we have experienced and this is what we have learned." What I heard is, "Be who you are and experience what you experience and learn from it." Their story is told simply, with love and reverence. Their story is one that hands you, the reader, courage as if it is their gift to you. Their story encourages you to look within yourself and say, "Oh yeah, this is who I am supposed to be. How did I get so lost? How do I return to where I need to be?" Go to YOUR destiny. I will meet you there.

They make you know that anything is possible and share the steps they've taken to attain their successes. Could not put it down.

I think Sam Lewin knew all there was to know about horse racing and tells it all in his book. All that you'll ever need to know about the race track is in his book. You need read no further. I knew his son Gregg and he too had such an extremly high IQ that I think he should have been called Gregg "the genius's son" Lewin. Gregg loved the track just as his father did and they are both in heaven now and I BET they are at the track there!

I'm not sure of the edition I read; someone is borrowing itnow, but if this edition is anything like it, I would highly recommendit. The HyperCard in a Hurry book that I read was an excellent book that got me up and running on HyperCard in no time at all. First-time computer users can learn a great deal about their Macs as they learn how to use HyperCard productively. More experienced computer users will race through the book and come out with plenty of new skills. Beekman leads you through a sample project instructing you all the way in the use of all the tools used. Beekman is a good teacher. Beginners are able to build interesting and useful projects in only a few hours using the book. The presentation is extremely clear and simple and the whole process is a lot of fun. I have to warn buyers that HyperCard is like peanuts and with the skills you learn in this text, you will be immediately hooked and begin shirking your other chores in favor of imagining and then developing projects in HyperCard. Beekman's book was my first experience with HyperCard and soon after reading it I wrote two projects that both sold on their first trips out to publishers. What's more, one of them caught the fancy of an acquisitions editor and got me a book contract with a major publisher. Mil gracias por todo, Mr. Beekman.

This is a great reference book to use when trying to determine where particular songs on the mainstream rock and modern rock charts topped out at. It's also a great browse to see what songs you haven't heard in a long, long time.
There is not too much to say other than this is a comprehensive book that covers those two Billboard charts in their entirety for the time period listed.

I had bought Whitburn's Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits 1955-2000 and while it's a fantastic book charting all the pop hits of the last 1/2 century, it was lacking in the representation of the album rock I grew up listening to. For example, AC/DC has only 3 tracks listed in the Top 40 Hits book, but there's 28 tracks listed in the Mainstream/Modern Rock book. In the more modern era, Pearl Jam has 7 tracks in the pop book but 33 tracks in the rock book. I highly recommend this book to all the head-bangers, grungers, and new wavers looking for a little history of the music they love.

I stumbled onto the original version of this book and almost didn't buy it. I didn't buy it at first, but after finding myself spending 30 minutes or more paging through it on two subsequent occasions, I decided that it might be a worthy addition to my library after all. Boy, was I right. My original copy, now a tattered paperback, is in dire need of replacement. This is an invaluable reference if you grew up listening to the album rock stations in the 80's. I've found several obscure songs that I couldn't track down through the traditional Top 40 or Hot 100 books, which made the book pay for itself in my estimation.

When I made the switch from advertising account executive to
poet it was intricate; the transition continues to be
challenging, thought quite pleasant and rewarding. Brown's
book was certainly helpful, and I especially appreciated
its assessibility, as well as its creative approach to
solving problems. Helpful too, was the profile of
Alexs Pate, someone who left the corporate arena to
pursue freelance creative writing. A wonderful, stimulating
book.

Many books are inspiring, but this one goes beyond the dream stage. Brown not only tells how people really start up a home-based business, but he even gives the reader an occasional kick in the butt to get out there and do things right. Read this book before starting a business on your own, and then read portions of it again regularly to get back on track after the business has been started

My wife and I waited until our mid 30s to start a family. I read a ton of child care guides. Now I have a toddler and one more on the way, and this book is my favorite...because it's not so doggone serious. It's a very funny sequel (Keeping the Baby Alive came first), but it is not just a joke book. If you like wacky humor like David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, or a good Saturday Night Live sketch, you will love Keeping Your Toddler on Track till Mommy Gets Back. While you are laughing though, you will realize that there is substance behind the homor. That's the best part.

True, the wonder of your newborn may have worn off a tad by the time he or she reaches toddlerhood. But this book puts all the agony and ecstacy of todder care into perspective... as only a father could experience it. Best of all, you get more laughs than the law allows, and more than a little bit of wisdom to ponder along with them. I liked this book as much as Keeping the Baby Alive, if not more. An excellent sequel.

Keeping Your Toddler On Track Till Mommy Gets Back: The Toddler Survival Guide For 21st Century Dads by Walter Roark is a child-rearing guide written especially and specifically for fathers. Wry and humorous, with an emphasis on common sense approaches, Keeping Your Toddler On Track Till Mommy Gets Back is a "reader friendly" compendium of solid advice for dealing with little tyke's bodily functions, temper tantrums, precocious nature, and more. As enjoyable to read as it is practical, Keeping Your Toddler On Track Till Mommy Gets Back is highly recommended reading for any Dad who must keep an eye on the kids while Mom's away!

The Last of the Ofos gives us a man whose resourcefulness and sense of adventure takes him across much of the 20th Century of the United States. Thomas Darko is innocent and worldly simultaneously, and brings a fresh but honest look at much human foolishness as he runs rum with integrity, searches for the woman who abandons him without sentiment, shows us the best and worst of those who idealize Native American culture and always returns to the life of simple self-sufficiency that gives him more satisfaction than all his adventures.
I loved the book and the dignity and truthfulness of the story. I stumbled across it in the University of Oklahoma bookstore and my curiosity was generously rewarded.
