Comprehensive!Review Date: 2008-03-09
The book starts with the building of proper on guard stances which is the foundation upon which everything else is built upon in boxing. Then long and shot term rhythm is covered. The importance of proper footwork is then explained. Further covered is: economy of motion, proper range, the laws of punching, counterpunching, the all important jab, the mechanics of punching (straight right, straight right body, left and right hook, left and right hook body, left and right uppercut), defense and counter attack (parries, catching, blocks for head and body, evasive movements, slips, ducks, slides and rides, and the rock back). The book goes on further to explain proper angling deviation from lateral back and forth motion so as to optimize evasive maneuvering, then the importance of sparring and associated training drills that are preparations for sparring, and finally the book discusses workout plans and coaching points, training equipment, general workout (warm up, bag work, shadowboxing and mirror training, jump rope, and sparring). All in all this is an excellent book at a good price and it is a very good reference book for beginners, armatures, and even professionals who want to get back to and review the basics .

An excellent piece of modern literatureReview Date: 2000-04-02
The book starts off in the States and follows the lead character through his happy relationship with his wife and friends to hi deployment to Vietnam. In Vietnam, he is framed with possession of Cannabis, and while he is taken by helicopter to face the music, they are shot down and taken as prisoners. From there, much of the book is about the 20 years he spends in a dark cell with a fellow soldier he befriends. Eventually he escapes only to find that his wife had also moved on . . .to someone who betrayed him. He seeks revenge, only to realize some things alng the way.
Crux is thrilling, thought provoking and very emotional (in the sense of heart-racing adventure and tear-inducing realism). It puts to shame the very basic and uneventful ramblings of Grisham and his ilk. Crux is a subtlely emotional powerhouse. Aellen wastes little time trying to force the issue, he lets it play, and lets you take what you will from it. This book helped me realise that you can't just take soldiers for granted, in fact they deserve more respect than we can understand to give.
Modern books are not what they used to be. Crime and Punishment, Home of the Gentry, and others, are books I learned to respect as a child through my extensive literature education.
But, from the sheer intelligence and the emotional impact this book had on me, Crux is the finest novel I've ever read.

THE MOST IMPORTANT TRACK BOOK IN TEN YEARS!Review Date: 2000-02-27
THE MOST IMPORTANT TRACK BOOK IN TEN YEARS!Review Date: 2000-02-26
Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of EuropeReview Date: 2004-11-26
"Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe" was wriiten after "Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of the Western United States" by Martin Lockley and gives the reader a more indepth knowledge of Dinosaur, reptilian, amphibian, and mammalian tracks and informs the reader of the difference in each of these track formations.
"Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe" is beautifully illustrated with numerous trackway art in line drawings and in photographic evidence. This book limits its scope to Europe mainly England, Sweden, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, and Croatia giving the reader a broad sense of the scope to which the dinosaur roamed in major trackways or super highways of travel. It is noted in the book that most of the known trackways are of a migration paths from the south to the north, but there are trackways that go in different directions and both sauropods and therapods tracks have been found.
I liked the book much better than the first book on ichnology by the same author as this book has copious illustrations to back up the author's claims and theories and you can see for yourself what the author is trying to tell you in the text, Thus illustrating, and it makes a lot of sense. The current dinosaur track renaissance in Europe is part of a worldwide dinosaur-tracking revolution that, during the past decade, has thrust the study of fossil footprints into a prominent position in the world of paleontology and sedimentary geology.
Paleontology and geology are just two of the scientific disciplines that you'll need to have to read this book along the anatomy and general mechanics of movement would help in understanding this books full potential. Such observations are perhaps not surprising when we consider that Europe and North America were united with other continents at this time as part of the Pangaen supercontinent. Archosaurs and other vertebrates, therefore, were able to range widly across the Triassic world, establish themselves in their perfered habitats, and leave their distinctive tracks and traces alongside other distinctive plant and animal remains.
Tracks in "Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe" cover a wide range of times. There are tracks from the Paleozoic, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary periods of time making for a wide discussion of events in this book. Moreover, these observations help to demonstrate that the composition and distribution of vertebrate trackmakers are less complicated that previously supposed.
"Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe" is a solid 5 star book and you'll learn much about the habits and habitats of the dinosaurs that made these tracks so long ago. The book has attempted to summerize the important sites and the insights they offer into vertebrate activity and evolution in Europe. Mesozoic tracks, however, are a differect story. The authors have been involved with active research at the Europian sites and have added significant knowledge and data that have been reported in recent years as the scope to which the science of ichnology is growing as more research is being devoted to these reminants of a lost age. There are very adequate bibliographies throughout the book and an extensive reference sections making this book a well annotated book and can be used for a stepping stone for future research into the amazing world of ichnology and there is and extensive appendix that is well documented as to where in Europe you can go to exterience fossil tracks first hand with illustrations to show the different formations.

An essential read for all in the academyReview Date: 2000-04-05
Powerful, poignant and engrossingReview Date: 2003-05-04
Graduate students thinking about making careers as professors should read this book carefully, especially if they have or would like to have children. Each author in the edited volume describes her valiant attempt to have a family life and an academic job at the same time. It's not a pretty picture. The narratives are personal and powerful. Several are horror stories about the inhumane treatment of new professors who are also new mothers.
Although this book is most relevant as a cautionary tale for women entering academia, it is also a "must read" for anyone interested in the history of feminism. The memoirs of some of the senior female academics, pioneers in their fields, reveal awesome courage. This is the printed mentor that I've seen other books purport to be.
My one concern is that the book's bleak honesty may discourage some graduate students, or create the impression that it is better to wait until after tenure to start a family. I'm a clinical psychologist whose specialty is counseling doctoral students and junior faculty, and I don't condone waiting until after the tenure review to begin living. The average path from grad student to tenured associate prof now takes more than 17 years (gulp). Putting essential goals on hold for that long shrivels the ovaries. If you want both the baby and the job, go for it!
Sad, but trueReview Date: 2005-07-27
I had a slightly better experience, with lots of support from both colleagues and family so I'm more optimistic about my chances for tenure. Either way, it is important that we understand how it was for women even 10 years ago before they could stop the tenure clock to have children. No wonder so few women are full professors now. It's sad. The main lesson I took from this is that w/o a good support network and a husband/partner who significantly helps out, tenure is unlikely. Also, it's unlikely if anyone gets sick or has any disability. It is sad that this is the reality, but important that we know this.

Eminently useful, from beginner to user in 3 days!Review Date: 2002-02-12
This is the first book I give to graduate students and within three days they are up to speed both with the language of feedback control theory and the principles. Moreover the explanations provide an intuitive understanding of important concepts and as a result are not easily forgotten. I highly recommend it to all designers, builders and users of feedback control systems.
A Must Have!Review Date: 2002-11-15
If you are faced with designing a working feedback system and are not a controls theory expert, this book is the single most useful reference you would ever hope to find. The explanations are intuitive and the practical advice indispensible. This book saved me many weeks on the learning curve. I was able to understand and measure the most challenging aspects of my particular system and clearly see how to predict performance.
It's very streamlined: the emphasis is clearly to deliver the relevant information with the least amount of overhead. As such, the only missing part of the book that I wanted is a list of references. Recognizing the insight of the authors, I would have liked a list of their favorite controls publications!
Exactly what you need to get startedReview Date: 2002-10-04
Make a proof of concept system that points a laser at a moving target.
My problem:
I knew how to write the software, I knew how to put the hardware together, but, I had no idea what to put in my feedback loop to make this thing track.
Oh yeah, I had to do this in two weeks.
So I read part of this book (my suggestion is start in the middle and read the math section when you /need/ to understand something in more depth) and I completed the assignment on time.
End result: I am not an expert on control systems theory, but by reading this book, I was able to get up and running in a matter of days.
