This is excellent and one of those rare books that you can read again and again. Alexander Frater writes about a journey he made using modern air transport that retraces the original route of Imperial Airways (predecessor of today's British Airways) on their pioneering route from London to Brisbane, Australia in the 1930's. Not only is it an extremely interesting travelogue but it also is highly informative in a historical sense. There are also many funny and poignant moments that he relates from his journey. The only downside is that unfortunately it is currently out of print

I was looking for a boxing book at the bookstore the other day and the first book that I grabbed was this book. I was first put off a wee bit by the title (`Ten Commandments') and was prepared to be disappointed since most boxing books that I have read are never written very well or if they are written well then the diagrams are often wanting. However, after looking through this book I was surprised at how well it was written and how thorough it was. All aspects of boxing training, fighting techniques, and boxing fundamentals were addressed. It's hard to find a boxing book that gives a good visual as well as a good written description of the subject matter but this book certainly fits the bill. The written descriptions of the boxing essentials are very concisely explained. The associated photos are of excellent quality and there are just enough pictures to clearly represent what is being explained in the written description.

The book starts with the building of proper on guard stances which is the foundation upon which everything else is built upon in boxing. Then long and shot term rhythm is covered. The importance of proper footwork is then explained. Further covered is: economy of motion, proper range, the laws of punching, counterpunching, the all important jab, the mechanics of punching (straight right, straight right body, left and right hook, left and right hook body, left and right uppercut), defense and counter attack (parries, catching, blocks for head and body, evasive movements, slips, ducks, slides and rides, and the rock back). The book goes on further to explain proper angling deviation from lateral back and forth motion so as to optimize evasive maneuvering, then the importance of sparring and associated training drills that are preparations for sparring, and finally the book discusses workout plans and coaching points, training equipment, general workout (warm up, bag work, shadowboxing and mirror training, jump rope, and sparring). All in all this is an excellent book at a good price and it is a very good reference book for beginners, armatures, and even professionals who want to get back to and review the basics .

Frank Felberbaum's "The Business of Memory" is one of the most practical books on the market for providing clear and concise methods for anyone to increase their memory. I used Frank's techniques with great success when I helped coach the current high school US Memory Championship team.

I met Mr. Felberbaum on Saturday March 11, 2006 at the USA Memory Competition New York City at the Con Edison building. What a great guy! I introduced myself and expressed to him how much I enjoyed reading his excellent book. This book is a pleasure to read, informative, and includes many easy to follow strategies that can dramatically improve your ability to remember ANYTHING you want. I highly recommend this book!

The organization and superb clarity with which this book is written makes it an easy read, despite the subject matter being complex. The writer has found a way for us to want to focus on his altruistic goal for us: to enhance our memory skills so that we can be more influential in the business world, and in our social interactions. Yet, the book is useful for everyone. We are once again convinced that knowledge is power, and Mr. Felberbaum's knowledge seems to be golden power, and we want it badly. He then provides us with hundreds of tools to improve areas where many struggle, including how to give a speech without notes, absorbing the contents of a lecture, and remembering people's names. We trust him as an expert in memory as he shares his motivation for entering this field, documents his own training, his vast experience, and then describes for us the amazing ways he has applied his abilities all over the world, letting us in on his secrets.

The late John Armstrong is considered by many in the model railroad community to be the Dean of layout planning and now I know why. The tricks, tips, and explanations he gives are first rate and I understand so much more about layout planning and design such as why to use easements for curves and how to plan them (P. 18) or how to integrate crossovers into a simple dog bone layout for the best effect (use two, P. 30). Never have I seen any designs get more use out of space but at the same time keeping a regard for scenery and not looking "toy-like." I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it extremely useful.

This book is a great companion to "Track Planning for Realistic Operation: Prototype Railroad Concepts for Your Model Railroad", also by John Armstrong. Unlike other layout plan books, this has many details on the operational aspect of these layouts, decisions on how to recreate in scale an specific prototype and notes that make the book a complete reference on these layouts, not only a set of plans gathered on a book with no further detail (which is exactly what we often see in layout books). Layouts range from small to larger size, so there's is inspiration for everyone inside, from begginer's to advanced modellers.

A definite must read for women needing answers, guidance or motivation in helping them move forward from a broken heart. The author reveals truly inspiring and enlightening revelations in the journey of life after experiencing a devastating breakup. While it is geared toward women, men can certainly benefit from the open, honest and candid insights into the heart and soul. I found the book hard to put down and superbly written with an ease of style that is almost hypnotic. In the genre of self help books, "Club Shattered, the fast track back from a broken relationship" ranks an A+.

WOW! What Pz has been able to convey as to the extent of pain and emotional devastation after a breakup was truly illuminating. In these jaded times, I feel most of us have become so guarded of our inner feelings that we have become numb, therefore emotionally stunted in some ways, always worried how others will see us. Pz made me feel that I could embrace my pain and not feel I was an emotional cripple, that it is okay to share that pain with loved ones and she helped me to map out a path to healing. Everyday I apply her principles and every day I feel better about what lies ahead.

Another great book by this author. If this is your first but them all because you will really be pleased. They are just what I am looking for. Interesting and inventive stories and really grab your attention and move at a great pace. I really believed the hatred and pain the lead character was carrying around with him as he went on the hunt. The action was well written, not immature like so many of this type of book give you. You are really cheering this guy on. The only critique I have, and it is a minor one, is that I really did not believe that they would keep him as a POW for so long. Other then that I bought into the whole boo. Great Job by the author.

One of my all time favorites.

I absolutely loved this book. I will always own a copy of it so I can read it every few years and share it with friends. It is an action-packed book that begins with the lead character as he leaves for Vietnam. Soon after he arrives,he is set up for a crime and then becomes a P.O.W. His escape, 20 or so years later, and his subsequent revenge against those who set him up for the crime and imprisonment take place at an incredibly fast pace. Reading this book is like watching an action movie - only better. If you loved Nelson Demille's Word of Honor you will love Crux.

At my secondary school, a friend of mine had just finished reading this book. At the time I had read almost all of Michael Crichton's and John Grisham's novels. I was a bit weary about reading a book mainly set during the Vietnam War. But from page one, I couldn't get enough. I can't remember many details (names etc.) and I've been looking everywhere for this novel. Even though this review may be vague, I hope you display it, since it is my opportunity to reflect what a classic this book is.

The book starts off in the States and follows the lead character through his happy relationship with his wife and friends to hi deployment to Vietnam. In Vietnam, he is framed with possession of Cannabis, and while he is taken by helicopter to face the music, they are shot down and taken as prisoners. From there, much of the book is about the 20 years he spends in a dark cell with a fellow soldier he befriends. Eventually he escapes only to find that his wife had also moved on . . .to someone who betrayed him. He seeks revenge, only to realize some things alng the way.

Crux is thrilling, thought provoking and very emotional (in the sense of heart-racing adventure and tear-inducing realism). It puts to shame the very basic and uneventful ramblings of Grisham and his ilk. Crux is a subtlely emotional powerhouse. Aellen wastes little time trying to force the issue, he lets it play, and lets you take what you will from it. This book helped me realise that you can't just take soldiers for granted, in fact they deserve more respect than we can understand to give.

Modern books are not what they used to be. Crime and Punishment, Home of the Gentry, and others, are books I learned to respect as a child through my extensive literature education.

But, from the sheer intelligence and the emotional impact this book had on me, Crux is the finest novel I've ever read.

Can a book make a loud SWOOSH? This one does -- the sound of a gigantic information void suddenly filling. It is a wonderfully encompassing coverage of dinosaurian and other ancient tracks of Europe, coupled, when appropriate, with well-informed comparisons to track types world-wide. Superbly illustrated with some of the most beautiful trackway photos I have seen published, and by abundant, carefully thought-out drawings, the person interested in either dinosaur or other ancient European tracks who misses this book will be as Sherlock Holmes without his magnifying glass. It is well-written in a style that should please the broad spectrum of readers from those just casually interested in ancient animals and their tracks, through the most serious of professional paleontologists and paleo-ichnologists (researchers of ancient traces). In fact, it is difficult to imagine any reader who would not appreciate and learn from this book and want to keep it accessible for years of useful reference, as well. Also, some significant re-interpretations of specific tracks or trackways that had been differently interpreted in earlier publications by various authors will appeal to the mystery lover in most of us. Trackways, after all, provide us the most dramatic insight into the dynamics of dinosaurs and other ancient animals that we will ever study or just enjoy, unless science fantsy becomes reality and Jules Verne's "Time Machine" volume becomes clearly prescientient. Meantime, "All aboard!" via the next best transport: Lockley and Meyer's DINOSAUR TRACKS...

"Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe " written by Martin G. Lockley and Christian Meyer is a wonderfully exciting book about vertebrate ichnology... the study of track of footprints of ancient vertebrates, that have walked the face of Europe some 200 to 300 million years ago.

"Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe" was wriiten after "Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of the Western United States" by Martin Lockley and gives the reader a more indepth knowledge of Dinosaur, reptilian, amphibian, and mammalian tracks and informs the reader of the difference in each of these track formations.

"Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe" is beautifully illustrated with numerous trackway art in line drawings and in photographic evidence. This book limits its scope to Europe mainly England, Sweden, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, and Croatia giving the reader a broad sense of the scope to which the dinosaur roamed in major trackways or super highways of travel. It is noted in the book that most of the known trackways are of a migration paths from the south to the north, but there are trackways that go in different directions and both sauropods and therapods tracks have been found.

I liked the book much better than the first book on ichnology by the same author as this book has copious illustrations to back up the author's claims and theories and you can see for yourself what the author is trying to tell you in the text, Thus illustrating, and it makes a lot of sense. The current dinosaur track renaissance in Europe is part of a worldwide dinosaur-tracking revolution that, during the past decade, has thrust the study of fossil footprints into a prominent position in the world of paleontology and sedimentary geology.

Paleontology and geology are just two of the scientific disciplines that you'll need to have to read this book along the anatomy and general mechanics of movement would help in understanding this books full potential. Such observations are perhaps not surprising when we consider that Europe and North America were united with other continents at this time as part of the Pangaen supercontinent. Archosaurs and other vertebrates, therefore, were able to range widly across the Triassic world, establish themselves in their perfered habitats, and leave their distinctive tracks and traces alongside other distinctive plant and animal remains.

Tracks in "Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe" cover a wide range of times. There are tracks from the Paleozoic, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary periods of time making for a wide discussion of events in this book. Moreover, these observations help to demonstrate that the composition and distribution of vertebrate trackmakers are less complicated that previously supposed.

"Dinosaur Tracks and Other Fossil Footprints of Europe" is a solid 5 star book and you'll learn much about the habits and habitats of the dinosaurs that made these tracks so long ago. The book has attempted to summerize the important sites and the insights they offer into vertebrate activity and evolution in Europe. Mesozoic tracks, however, are a differect story. The authors have been involved with active research at the Europian sites and have added significant knowledge and data that have been reported in recent years as the scope to which the science of ichnology is growing as more research is being devoted to these reminants of a lost age. There are very adequate bibliographies throughout the book and an extensive reference sections making this book a well annotated book and can be used for a stepping stone for future research into the amazing world of ichnology and there is and extensive appendix that is well documented as to where in Europe you can go to exterience fossil tracks first hand with illustrations to show the different formations.

Highly relevant, stimulating reading recommended for anyone (and everyone) involved in higher education. The Family Track articulates many unspoken concerns of American academics through autobiographical pieces, interviews, and critical essays. From eldercare to parental leave, commuter marriages to children with special needs, the topics are as pertinent as they are undiscussed among faculties. Challenging and engaging, with practical strategies for developing family-friendly campuses.

Powerful, poignant and engrossing

I bought this book at the suggestion of Ms. Mentor (a.k.a. Emily Toth) who touted it in one of her wise and witty columns in "The Chronicle of Higher Education". As usual, Ms. Mentor provided "Impeccable Advice for Women in Academia".

Graduate students thinking about making careers as professors should read this book carefully, especially if they have or would like to have children. Each author in the edited volume describes her valiant attempt to have a family life and an academic job at the same time. It's not a pretty picture. The narratives are personal and powerful. Several are horror stories about the inhumane treatment of new professors who are also new mothers.

Although this book is most relevant as a cautionary tale for women entering academia, it is also a "must read" for anyone interested in the history of feminism. The memoirs of some of the senior female academics, pioneers in their fields, reveal awesome courage. This is the printed mentor that I've seen other books purport to be.

My one concern is that the book's bleak honesty may discourage some graduate students, or create the impression that it is better to wait until after tenure to start a family. I'm a clinical psychologist whose specialty is counseling doctoral students and junior faculty, and I don't condone waiting until after the tenure review to begin living. The average path from grad student to tenured associate prof now takes more than 17 years (gulp). Putting essential goals on hold for that long shrivels the ovaries. If you want both the baby and the job, go for it!

Sad, but true

I really felt that I learned a lot from this book. It is important that those considering a tenure track job/career read this as others have mentioned. I think it's even more important that administrators read it.

I had a slightly better experience, with lots of support from both colleagues and family so I'm more optimistic about my chances for tenure. Either way, it is important that we understand how it was for women even 10 years ago before they could stop the tenure clock to have children. No wonder so few women are full professors now. It's sad. The main lesson I took from this is that w/o a good support network and a husband/partner who significantly helps out, tenure is unlikely. Also, it's unlikely if anyone gets sick or has any disability. It is sad that this is the reality, but important that we know this.

This is truly an excellent book. Speaking as a scientist that uses feedback loops as merely one component of experimental apparatus, this book contains everything you need and nothing that you don't. It contains explanations of analog and digital systems and illustrates these with practical and common examples.

This is the first book I give to graduate students and within three days they are up to speed both with the language of feedback control theory and the principles. Moreover the explanations provide an intuitive understanding of important concepts and as a result are not easily forgotten. I highly recommend it to all designers, builders and users of feedback control systems.

I'm a physics grad student and needed to frequency stabilize a laser using a rather complicated feedback system. I had no controls theory background but needed to "get up to speed" fast--this book did it!

If you are faced with designing a working feedback system and are not a controls theory expert, this book is the single most useful reference you would ever hope to find. The explanations are intuitive and the practical advice indispensible. This book saved me many weeks on the learning curve. I was able to understand and measure the most challenging aspects of my particular system and clearly see how to predict performance.

It's very streamlined: the emphasis is clearly to deliver the relevant information with the least amount of overhead. As such, the only missing part of the book that I wanted is a list of references. Recognizing the insight of the authors, I would have liked a list of their favorite controls publications!

Here was my assignment:

Make a proof of concept system that points a laser at a moving target.

My problem:
I knew how to write the software, I knew how to put the hardware together, but, I had no idea what to put in my feedback loop to make this thing track.

Oh yeah, I had to do this in two weeks.

So I read part of this book (my suggestion is start in the middle and read the math section when you /need/ to understand something in more depth) and I completed the assignment on time.

End result: I am not an expert on control systems theory, but by reading this book, I was able to get up and running in a matter of days.

Whoa, Florence Griffith Joyner, the worlds wonderful track star of the womens track history. This women showed and told that she worked her heart out just to reach her goal. I love this book so much because just by reading it she showed me that I to can also reach my goals of the future. Even though she died I still remember she wuz and she still will be the best in my eyes and mind. Florence went to UCLA and started her future there. the coach thought that she was not good enough to be on the famous college team, but she showed her how much track meant to her. florence showed that it just didn't take hard work to reach an important goal of your life but she showed that it took faith, beleif, very very hard work and many more things. She sounded like she even took away her own quality time to work hard and strive for her goal.n Well hope you take my advice and happen to love this book.
