This book is a great book! The best one I have ever read. It makes you laugh, cry, everything. It was just an all around great book! I am really happy that GaWaNi Pony Boy made this amazing book about the connection of women and horses. Its nice to finally find a book and be able to read it and see that finally their are other women out there that understand the same relationships and love for horses as I do, I couldnt put it down. I HIGHLY reccomend this book to an one who LOVES horses!!

I bought this book as a gift for my youngest daughter who shares the love of horses with me. The photos are gorgeous. The essays of these horse women are beautifully written, full of imagery and delve into the spirit of women's connection with these magnificent animals. I highly recommend this book to collect and cherish.

It's about time, GaWaNi has done it again. I laughed, I cried and felt deeply for many of the women in this incredible book. I first heard about it when I saw him on Larry King Live with Bo Derek, Terry Ventura and Chaia King (the latter two are actually in the book) and thought it might be an interesting read.....I have this on my coffee table and come back to it time and time again. What's nice about the format of this book is you can read one or two of the essays, and come back to it later - a very convenient read, and nice to go with whatever mood I happen to be in - (and ladies, we know we have many) you will find a story to go with every one!
I've had several friends try to make off with it - but told them to get their own! Beautiful artwork and a gorgeous layout make this pleasing to the eye, and the thoughts and words will move your heart.
I heard a rumor that he's put out another one, can't wait!

Excellent. Having come from the 'nat.' horsemanship clinicianss, I found I was ready to know even more. Through the help of a new instructor who is 4th generation N. Calif. ranch (used to the vaquero ways) and who became appreciative of the Masters, I am starting a whole new exposure. It is wonderful! She rec'd this book and will add more as I go along. I am halfway into this book and already am realizing how much we can learn from our horses if we just slow down and pay attention to them and each one of their particular personalities and behaviours. It is teaching me even more respect. This instructor appreciates Ray Hunt but also the Masters and I'm not sure but I think she considers Ray Hunt up there in that category as well as Tom Dorrance (who was a neighbor when she was younger and a person whom she learned from as well.). I reccommend this book to every horse lover and rider. It to me is right up there in the classics for an adult just like the Black Stallion, Walter Farley books were right up there when I was a child. It is not as exciting as the Walter Farley books because it is not fiction, but it is a very worthy read. ~ Copperhorse 4 Fun

This is Colonel Podhajsky's story of his life, told in context of his relationships with his horses. Sometimes people tend to think that some of the currently popular "natural horsemandship" principles are either new, or apply only to western riding. However, Colonel Podhajsky talks in terms of true partnership and understanding with your horse from the perspective of classical European Dressage, and of course pre-dates the current popular "methods." Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Pat and Linda Parelli, and feel that they, and others who are popular today, have done a lot to improve the lot of horses. They have also found a way to help the rest of us learn how to achieve the sort of relationships with our horses that Colonel Podhajsky describes in this book. This book is the story of a true master in every sense of the word. Don't miss it!!

A Must-Read!

This inspirational book is truly a classic, as are all of Podhajsky's writings. A timeless, enlightening book which should be read not only by dressage enthusiasts, but by all who are interested in the partnership between horse and rider.

Confused by all the hoopla around the "Natural Horsemanship" gurus these days? Find out what is the real thing by reading Alois Podhajsky's "My Horses, My Teachers." In fact, this book could be a sourcebook in Human Relationship, or Self-Help categories as well as any equine category. AP writes passionately about his relationships with his own gurus, the many horses who were lucky enough to cross paths with this kind, gentle, patient master of horsemanship. Reading this book one feels as if these stories are being told face to face with this beacon of horsemasters, sitting in his living room on comfortable couches. This is a must read for ANY horse enthusiast!

Alois Podhajsky was head of the famed Spanish Riding School and the Royal Lipizzaner Stallions. He is author of several books and shows that his talent for writing is as great as his talent for riding and training horses.

This book is a collection of stories on how several of his horses has taught him valuable lessons in riding as well as in life. It is entertaining, humorous and, at time, poignant.

This book is valuable for anyone who rides -- particularly those who are interested in competing. I have found in my "adult amateur" experience that many riders view their horses as the key to their success. If they lose, the reason they lose is because the horse failed. When buying a horse, they consider whether the horse has the "talent".

Podhajsky teaches us that every horse -- regardless of talent, ability or training -- has something to teach us and something that can make us better riders and better people. You don't need a 30K warmblood in order to become a better rider.

Dressage is all about the relationship between horse and rider -- and about how that relationship makes each horse/rider better and reach a higher level of ability. And the symbiotic relationship between horses and riders is what makes riding so enjoyable. This is something that is true for all disciplines and life in general. This is true of life as well. We can always learn something from every experience and every person if we keep our mind open.

The pictures and information are just wonderful. It has helped me with identifying and catloging my own collection.. I take it with me when I going antiquing. I love this book! I don't know what else the author could have included -- it is so complete. I especially like the fact that the book is broken into sections, i.e. the horses and riders, the standing gunfighters, the riders and the horses shown separately in other sections. I also enjoy the history section in the back, and the detailed written descriptions about the models and their variations. The quality of the color photos is superb and I would highly recommend this book to any Hartland collector. I can't wait till her book on the breed horses comes out!

Gail Fitch has done a superb job of putting together extrememly detailed and accurate information about all of Hartland's horse and rider figures, with lots of very nice pictures showing details that complement the text. This book has gotten rave reviews from non-Hartland collectors as well as all kinds of horse collectors, and they are well deserved! This is a book that can keep you happily absorbed for long periods of time and it's an essential reference for collectors. Hartland Horsemen is an excellent book, very professionally done, and I love it! Like someone else said, I can't wait until the Hartland horse book is done so I can buy it!

How I wish Jody Jaffe would continue her series with Natty Gold, the Charlotte, NC, fashion writer who is an amateur sleuth and show rider. The characters are well defined, the horse show knowledge is unsurpassed and the mysteries are believable, taking place in accurately-researched settings. Interestingly, the killers in all three books are female, proving that women are up to the task of evil too. In this book, I have a slight nit to pick, and hate to even suggest anything but a 'clear round.' However, the loose ends nagged at me: Natty's Asheville, NC, hotel room is trashed, while the real culprit is more than three hours away from the scene at the time and no other potential trashers are in evidence. Then in the same chapter, Nattie is at an outdoor wedding, also in Asheville, where she is shot at, yes real bullets go whizzing by her head. Again, the real culprit is miles away, and no one else with motive, real or imagined, is anywhere nearby. In both instances, Natty simply goes on and never refers to either incident again, at all. Nerves of steel maybe, but for one so curious, she spends no time trying to find out who wanted her scared, dead or both. Neither event is resolved in any way. I am assuming Ms Jaffe's editors did her no favors in this chapter and did not bother to read before or ahead for the sake of sense. But I still hope Ms Jaffe will revive the series. Three books should be just the beginning!

Jody Jaffe's latest hunter/jumper mystery is one of the best books I've read. It's description of the hunter/jumper A circuit is dead on, the end is suprising and satisfying and it had me chuckling throughout. As a teen competing on the A circuit I can identify with Ashlee's life and struggles. A fabulous book.

This book is excellent, I can't tell you how many times I've referred back to it. Contains tips for training horse and rider in all three phases, and common problems that most riders will certainly face sometime in their career. Lots of great photographs to show you the right (and sometimes not so right) way to do things. Advice on conditioning (which I've found to be very helpful) and gymnastics at the back of the book. If you event, get this book.

In 1984 I began riding in Jimmy's clinics and have accumulated numerous hours riding, watching and listening. During this time I took copious notes on his comments; measurements of his gymnastics; watched other riders and listened to Jimmy's critiques. "Training-the-Three-Day Event Horse" IS Jimmy Wofford. His concise, straitforward teaching comes through in his book just as though you are there listening to him. If I could only have one book, it would be this one. I recommend it to my students, I give it as gifts and I wouldn't leave home without it.

I was SO happy to finally read a book involving cross country with so much emphasis on good basics and snaffle bits. I am so sick of hearing trainers advocating bigger bits to control your horse. Mr. Wofford advocates better TRAINING to control your horse - what a concept. This book covers quite a range of topics; from choosing an event horse, dressage, how the horse sees jumps vs. how we see jumps, cross country, jumping, conditioning, cross country position and more. I think this is a great book!

This is a beautiful, inspirational collection of real life stories of the love, lessons learned and spirtiual connections that people have with horses.
Each story is sensitively told in the own words of the horse's owner/or the person who has the story to tell.
The book's major focus is on the spirituality and sensitivity of the horse and just how deep that goes in these beautiful creatures.
A gentle plea for people to open their hearts and minds to the wisdom and love horses have to offer at all stages of their lives.
I found the book to be touching and refreshing.

A touching collection of essays on the bonds between horses and humans.
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-01
This book comprises a collection of 38 short essays, all submitted by different authors, about the special ways in which horses have impacted their lives. The essays are divided into four categories. "Love and Dreams" focuses on how a the love of horses can affect people; "Healing and Health" contains stories about lessons learned from equine health troubles, as well as ways in which horses have taught people about their own health; "Courage and Endurance" collects stories about equine heroes and horses that have inspired the people around them; and finally "Spiritual Connection and the Afterlife" explores the spiritual and religious experiences humans have had in connection with horses. After each essay the authors pose a question or two for the reader, designed to prompt reflection on how the story may relate to your own life. At the end of each section is a short, fictional "Ask Zeke" page, where the authors have posed a question to their friend's horse, Zeke, and then composed an reply as if Zeke himself were answering. The stories are a mixed bag of themes, and some impacted me more than others. If you aren't a particularly religious person, you may find a couple of the more supernaturally-oriented stories a little harder to relate to, but on the whole the essays presented here are heartfelt and touching. My favorite pieces were "Emily's Song," about a withdrawn, lonely young girl who finally comes out of her shell in order to help and even lonelier, more withdrawn pony, and "Miracles are Something to Believe In," written by a 12-year-old girl who's pony Lilly saved her life by, counter-intuitively enough, falling on her in a freak accident. The book is a quick and easy read, suitable for horse lovers of all ages, and well worth the time. "Angel Horses" would be a great gift for any horse lover, or a nice treat for yourself.

Review Date: 2002-03-20
This book is a masterpiece in writing. Teresa's style is captivating and exciting, helping the reader live her experiences. The stories are long-term events rather than specific anecdotes, and they don't all have 'endings'. Her passion for the horse is evident and refreshing because I felt that, hey, I'm not alone after all. However, what I found a little depressing was the emphasis on life and death issues. A brief mentioning would have been okay, but she kept referring back to it throughout the book, making the issue seem more like a ground stone on which the rest of the book is constructed. I should also say that the title of the book is a little misleading. The stories are not about horses the papers would've written about. They are about horses who have influenced lives and taught lessons (and only those who have crossed the author's path). Personally, I loved it and would highly recommend it. I just would've liked a little less emphasis on life and death philosophies.

WOW! I can only say to all of us READ THIS BOOK. In its beautiful simplicity, it holds a message for each of us that we are ready now to receive and finally hear. The horse is the teacher of the heart and T. Martino is the teacher of those of us fortunate enought to read her stories about the horse and the child and the young woman and the wolf woman. A powerful book that can be and will be read cover to cover by all who pick up the book. What life lessons are ours to puruse. This is truly a wonderful read and I highly recommend it. And wouldn't it make a beautiful movie?

This book tells the author's tale of how she has been touched by horses and how horses seem to get into our spirits and move us so greatly. Whether you are an olympic event rider, or don't know what eventing is, this book is written in a way to touch and teach both. Martino has led a truly unique life in partnership with and as a true friend to horses. This would make a great book club selection.

Each of Teresa's books brings a part of your inner feelings and past experiences to mind. She poetically takes you into her life's experiences, not just with horses, but with her whole life and all that and who are so important to her. I can't imagine anyone reading this book or any other and not feel a connection to some of Teresa's lifes experiences. T has done what not many would do, even if the love for horses and wolves is in your heart. She gave up the comfortable, secure life for the calling in her heart with these majestic animals. She reminds us that they have insecurities with humans as much as we do. T is a True humanitarian with animals and people. She is committed to her love of animals and what she believes in. Her devotion to family, friends and animals is to be highly commended. There should be many more Teresas in this world but I believe one person can make some difference even if it is on small scale. Thanks T look forward to your next book. Anuyi

Again we are treated to Cindy Hale's colorful prose, which puts you right there with the horses and tugs at your heartstrings. So often we - the horse-crazy - need to explain to others just why we are consumed with love for our gentle giant equine friends, and are at a loss for words. This book explains it like no other.

A Passion For Horses had me laughing, smiling and crying as I read through it all, especially reading about the brave Kathy Havens, who - a fighter to the end - didn't let something like stomach cancer get in the way of her time with her dear chestnut friend Bud. And the retirement ceremony of Pam Mahony's legenday Valor, who is still remembered fondly as one of those Once In A Lifetime Horses, and who will never be forgotten by those who saw him in the show ring.

Cindy and Sharon, thank you again for touching our hearts. I look forward to your next book with eager anticipation!
