A very approachable book on the fur trade era in the southwestern U.S. Whereas some historians can and do overburden the reader with a plethora of facts and footnotes, this is not the case with "Reckless Breed of Men". Dr. Cleland includes two excellent chapters on both of Jedediah Smith's southwestern explorations from 1826-1828 along with chapters on other influential trappers of the times, James Ohio Pattie, Ewing Young, Joseph Walker and members of the Hudson's Bay Company, Peter Skene Ogden and John Work. Also included are chapters on the Sante Fe and California trade. This is a well written, informative book which illustrates the many hardships and misfortunes these men endured during their exploits into unknown territories.

it has stuck in my mind

I read this book a while ago and it is one that has left a lasting impression on me. The story line has already been told by the others reviewers and it is a compelling story. What has lasted with me is the fact that it took place during World War II on an English island, Jersey, under Nazi occupation. Homes were taken over and food became scarce for both the Germans and the people living on Jersey. It was a revealing read on the survival of war-time occupation. It also had mystery, romance and drama. I highly recommend this book.

When my family was looking into getting the "perfect" dog we considered the tibetan terrier. This book helped us to determine whether it was the perfect dog or not. It did help, and convinced us to get the dog.

Whether you are looking at getting a dog, or just want something to read this book is great. It also has GREAT colored photographs.

wonderful book about telepathy on Venus
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-20
This is one of my all time favorite books, and I have read more then a few. I read this one for the first time as a young adult, and I have kept rereading it every say 3 years or so afterwards. I still can remember the day and the special joy when I actually could buy my own copy of this book.

Tonke Dragt mixes science fiction with psychology and a poetic world desciption, as she matches extra terrestrials with telepathy. She creates a wonderful atmosphere that way, that pulls you into the book, and only releases you after the last page has been read, sad that the book has ended already.

The protagonist is an planet explorer. An exception to the rule, since he is one of the very few people who asked for a reassignment on Venus. Everyone else is glad to get away of the planet with its jungles, that seem to destroy everything man brings in there. With microbes that is, not by flesh eating plants or things like that. Very little is known about these forests. People do not venture there anymore. Those who did, lost their minds, or never came back. It seems a very hostile place for mankind. It seems uninhabited too... When people ask Edu why he wanted to come back he encourages them to think it's for his promotional chances, but the truth is, the jungle draws him, seems to call him....

I won't spoil it all, and disclose more. The book has high pace, high tension but also a good grasp of what moves people and what they are afraid of.

If you can lay your hands on it: read it!

A nice, comprehensive guide for new poodle owners
Helpful Votes: 31 out of 32 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-19
Along with my newly adopted mini poodle, I purchased three books on the breed. This one is by far my favorite for several reasons.

Number one, it was obviously written by a person intimately familiar with the poodle breed. Though it did cover some basics that would be great for any dog owner to keep in mind (such as potty and behavior training and a basic vet overview), it also delved into specific poodle concerns that I - as a new poodle owner - had never known. My concerns about grooming, feeding, special health concerns and training were all covered.

Another thing I loved about this book was its readability. I never felt overwhelmed or bored reading this, and I really felt prepared to take on the ownership of a breed of dog I'd never had prior experience with.

As an added bonus, it came with a neat training dvd that showed some basic training techniques in live action.

Probably my absolute favorite part about this book is that it covers how to ADOPT a poodle. I met my little buddy at the humane society, and most people are shocked to hear that when I tell them (he looks like he could be a show dog). You really can find a pure bred best friend at the pound. But don't let them overshadow all those adorable mixed breeds!!

This book offers great, direct non-nonsense advice on training your dog. Especially valuable are the "sneakaways" to focus your pet's attention (it really works!). This is a training book for people who want to get as much done as possible in a moderate amount of time.

From components of retrieves to teaching tactics, TRAINING RETRIEVERS is packed with specifics hunter/trainers will use again and again.
