And some you didn't. I am on the waiting list for a puli, so I figured I would read a couple of books on them. This is a great
comprehensive resource on puli, including breed history, training, coat care and all the basics you will need to know to handle
this wonderful breed.

This is a great book for elementary school kids. It has B&W photographs and easy to read text.
The book features: The Basset Hound, the Border Collie, the Dalmation, the Springer Spaniel. the Jack Russell Terrier (now Parson Jack Russell), the Great Dane, the German Short-haired Pointer, the Saluki, the English Setter, the German Shepard, the Italian Greyhound, the Long-haired Dauschund, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the Toy Poodle, and the lovable Mutt!
I think this is a great book if you are thinking of introducing a new dog into your family.
The book shows pictures of puppies and adults and gives kids an idea of what the dog was bred to do; hunt, herd, etc.
If you like dogs and/or own or love any of these breeds, this is a very nice book to have in your collection.
(If I misspelled any breeds, sorry!)

This book, by investigative reporter Larry Shook is an eye-opening and sometimes horrifying look at what is happening in the
world of pure-bred dogs today... Using his first purchase of a pure-bred as a tragic example, he begins a search to find
what went wrong and finds that we are killing our dogs with kindness. The popularity of certain breeds has allowed puppy
mills (worth a tell all book in itself) and unprincipled breeders to pass on gentic diseases and defects that doom the dog
from the start, and now, because of these practices have been allowed unchecked, these same diseases and defects are not
merely common but to be expected in certain animals. One shocking bit of information is that the AKC has, to a certain degree,
encouraged these practices by allowing "fashion" to rule in the show ring and simply by the fact the AKC makes money by simply
registering purebreds, healthy or not...(n fairness Mr. Shook also points out that at the time of the book's printing (1992)
the AKC had begun to take some steps toward correcting this)Mr.Shook details exactly what the potential buyer of a pure-bred
should be looking for, what questions to ask and where to go for ACCURATE information on the breed you are interested in...Sadly,
this book is out of print now, as it should be required reading for anyone considering the purchase of pure-bred dog.....

This Audio book combines the great talents of Max Brand's story writing with Barry Corbin's reading abilities ;resulting in an excellent yarn in typical Western style.
Originally written in 1924,it holds your attention and is filled with excitement from beginning to end. I don't generally listen to Audio Tapes as I find I tend to get distracted by other things around me;but I was looking for something to entertain me for 90 minutes on a hot summer evening. With a couple of long cool drinks ,I put my feet up,turned the lights down, and sat back on my porch and just let these two gentlemen entertain me---and enjoyed every minute of it.By the way,my dog beside me,seemed to enjoy it as well.

I love dogs, so I should never be surprised to hear of a dog's intelligence or character, but this dog, Rags, really takes
the biscuit. He was truly remarkable...one of a kind, and got up to all sorts of scrapes and mischief. Amazingly astute, clever,
cheeky, friendly, faithful, persistant you name it....and a multiple life-saver too. Buy this book, you'll love it.

Rare Poultry Breeds by David Scrivener is essential for people interested in the variety and possibilities in chicken breeds.
It's for persons like me who have read old poultry books in University libraries, and would always like more detail. When
I read that this book would have information not found in others, I couldn't let it go by, because then I would not know everything.
The book might have been better titled Rare Chicken Breeds, as there are no turkeys or waterfowl.
Rare Poultry Breeds is strictly about the rare chicken breeds - there are no Leghorns described here, no Cochins, Brahmas, Orpingtons, Plymouth Rocks or even Polish. Game breeds are left out, better described in other books. (But while the breeds Malay and Aseel are not included, Cubalaya and the Madagascar Game are.)
A partial list of breeds includes: Bergische Kraeher, Dutch Owlbeard, Brakel, Malines, Red Caps, La Bresse, Brabanconne, Frizzles, La Fleche, Deutsches Reichshuhn, Scots Greys, Onagadori, Marsh Daisy, Norfolk Greys, Yokohamas, and Naked Necks. For each breed standard-size fowls and bantams are described together. Details include when each breed was made, who made them, and when they were most popular. There is information on breeding in Germany, where the exhibition chicken hobby is largest. You will read about the differences between similar European breeds, some of them genuinely obscure.
In the section on American breeds there is a discussion of why the German Dominique is different from the American version, plus you can read about Jersey Giants, Delawares, Hollands, and more. There are articles on bantam-only breeds like Booteds, the German bantam, Burmese and Nankins. There is a chapter on autosexing breeds.
Langshans get their own chapter, and the differences between the British Croad Langshan, American Langshan, Modern Langshan, and German Langshan are clearly explained.
The reader will make new discoveries: I learned that Lincolnshire Buffs are bred with 5 toes! I was excited to read about the Ptarmigan and other extinct breeds.
I was only disappointed that, although the Sicilian Buttercup was mentioned, Italian breeds seemed to be left out. I would like to have read about the Polverara, and Valdarno. Excepting the (not rare enough) Minorca, all Spanish breeds seemed to be included, even the Penedesenca.
The photographs by John Tarren are excellent, as are other photos by Hans Schippers, and Julia Keeling. The paintings by Kurt Zander and Van Gink are outstanding; plus a few more by A. J. Simpson and J. W. Ludlow.
The photo of the Buff Catalana is actually a German-type Buff Leghorn. The Orloff on the bottom of page 91 is a male, not a female.
This book is very much worth owning. You will be pleased.

Mike Blakely is a master story teller and writer. "The Rarest of the Breed" bares this out with its interwoven threads of
history and nary a wasted word. Bison hunter, Gabriel, sets out on the plain to kill another `shaggy' for the pelt; he doesn't
need the meat. The Indians do, of course, and that plays into the conflicts in this tense, revelatory tale. Blakely renders
Gabriel's past unobtrusively in back story while the herd of buffalo graze closer. The ending is a jaw-dropper.
