Okay, I'm biased. I'm proud to have been a contributer and some small way to making this book possible. And it's a great book. If you have a Corgi (Pem or Cardi) or a Corgi mix, there are tips in here from some really experienced people. And stories, recipes (people and dog oriented) and pictures. A real delight for those of us who love the breeds. And if you're thinking about getting one, there's advice on how to pick one out, where to find one (hint, not at the pet store) and how to raise a well behaved dog. Not everybody's cut out to be a Corgi owner, but this book can hopefully help you decide.

And it benefits CorgiAid. I can't think of a better way to contribute to a great cause and get something useful in return.

If you are adopting a corgi or thinking about getting one, this is the book for you. It contains all information you will need to know to raise such a wonderful creature. Love the book so much that I'm almost mad at myself for getting it so late that now mine is almost 3 years old. :)

My wife and I have owned two cardigan welsh corgi's and they are the only breed for us. Bright, loving, beautiful, stubborn, loyal and hilarious, our two dogs have given us years of joy.

When our oldest died just three weeks short of his 17th birthday, we bought this book based on other reader's reviews in hopes of learning some information about breeders and how to deal with some behavioral issues exhibited by our now seven year-old, Morton. The book provided valuable knowledge and insights about these and other topics. If you're going to buy a book to learn about how to get your own corgi and raise him or her, this is the best volume I've read on the subject.

Everything you want to know or need to know about the two breeds. An excellent book on how to raise, train and care for any dog.

One thing I do not understand though, is why more people don't own corgis. They're not huge dogs, but they think they are and are one of the most trainable of dogs, plus they are a laugh a minute because no one can convince them they aren't "people". You just need to let them know who is the alpha and who isn't. It doesn't take them long to figure this out, either. It is because, as I said, they are one of the most trainable of dogs.

This is the most darling book. I purchased it after I adopted a Siamese cat named Simba, yes, the very one that was talked about in the book. Fiona thought he was her Prince but she soon found out he was a King. My family, our dog Saffy and I are featured in the book and I had the honor of meeting Fiona and Java. This is a true story with a real fairy-tale ending. Good for all ages. --from one grateful family, The Barnetts. p.s. Simba is doing very well these days and is as beautiful as ever. (I've also purchased this book as a Christmas present for family members.)

This wonderfully written, beautifully photographed book tells the true story of two formerly homeless Siamese cats who find love and each other in a permanent, "forever" home -- something all too elusive for many homeless cats and dogs. The story is told with a gentle humor that will appeal to animal lovers of all ages while stressing the less fortunate plight of many other homeless and abandoned pets. Buy and enjoy this book! You'll be glad you did.

Is there a cat lover in your life? Perhaps a child who loves animals, but isn't aware of animal homelessness? Perhaps a friend who regularly rescues the neighborhood strays? "Princess Fiona" by Kari Winters would be the perfect gift for the animal lover in your life.

This sweet tale, told by Princess Fiona herself, chronicles the story of a "feral" kitten that finds her way into a loving home. Passing through the loving hands of rescuers and foster homes, Fiona eventually learns to fit in, even befriending a dog named "Wuffy"! This charming story allows those unaware of the plight of homeless animals to be enlightened while not being exposed to an emotionally draining story, which makes it perfect for children. All proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the California Siamese Rescue, making it an endearing, yet practical gift with a message!

This is a gentle little book, appealing to adults and children alike. It is told from a cat's point of view (Princess Fiona) and relates the story of her adoption, and the adoption of her soon-to-be Prince Charming, Liam, into a blended family of loving animals and humans. It is written in a heartwarming style by Kari Winters and illustrated with adorable color photos by Stephanie Montagne.
Plus, ALL proceeds from the sale of this book go to help more cats like Princess Fiona and Liam at the California Siamese Rescue. Neither Winters nor Montagne even received any payment for their services; everything went to CASR. BRAVO!

This book was great, it helped me be able to learn how to trian my dog to track using the air scenting method. It gives step by step instructions on how to succeed in training you dog to become certified in Search and Rescue. Published by the ARDA you know that the material it contains is up to date and current. The other great feature in this book is that is specializes in ground tracking, air scent tracking, disaster search, avalance search, cadaver search, and water search and rescues. Can't speak more highly of this book, the only book that compares with this book is Search Dog Training by Sandy Bryson.

if you like German Shepherds...

This is a really good book. But, if you don't have a German Shepherd than you still might want to look elsewhere. The book can absolutely teach you a lot but the concentration on GSDs will likely grate on you. The bias is such that there is no mention of the fact that the public tends to be frightened of German Shepherds, and that Labradors and Goldens can do the work just as well without the unfair but widespread stigma of Shepherds. Or that Retrievers excel at this work BECAUSE they are retrievers and because they genuinely adore people! Anyway, it REALLY does have a lot of good information, I just can't give it five stars because there are lots of great breeds in the world, many of which are suitable for SAR work. Why discount and ignore them?

A logical approach

In training any dog, the biggest challenge always is how to 'connect the dots' in the dogs mind for what you want to see repeated and ignore what you don't want repeated. You then move on to giving the dog space to make his own choices based on what you taught him. This book fits perfectly into the philosophy.

I have owned two purebred dogs. Field Springers and Border Collies. Both breeds I had to trust to make their own decisions at one point as both had to ultimately operate off a lead. Establishing that connection is key with any dog to keep them safe, and to keep the enjoyment factor high. I give high marks to this book for making this point.

I disagree with a previous reviewer that this is only about German Shepherds. Certainly the pictures are, but anyone who has ever trained a dog should know that personality, drive, and disposition are all factors in training and that trumps breed every time. If the dog is interested he/she is limited only by his ability to smell.

The strongest part of this book is that it begins with simple puzzles for the dog, then offers more complex puzzles as they gain confidence. Like the writers, I agree that the dog has to want to do this. For my border collie it is now a passion. What I used to call 'hide and seek' with my dog has now jumped to a different level thanks to this book.

I'm grateful to the reviewers of this book who gave this such high marks. It made all the difference in choosing the right one. AND, I chose the right one.

My name is Debra Marlin. I am the author of "Yellowdog",and "Yellowpup".
Over the years so many have told me of the warm hearted reviews appearing
here on Amazon. Thank you so much. I'm glad that the images and text have
touched the hearts of so many. I just entered the realm of the internet or I would have written this sooner. Keep an eye on Amazon soon. I am about to
publish an extraordinary fine-art horse book and a follow-up to Yellowdog and
Yellowpup. The horse book is every bit as poignant, and mystical as the dog
books and just as beautiful. I spent four years in Carmel Valley, and Paso Robles, CA. shooting it. There is also a beautiful book soon to be released which is of the paintings from Yellowdog. It will be a signed and numbered limited edition. So many thanks to Amazon, for over the years so generously
promoting my books. I'm sure there will be many more. Sincerly Debby Marlin

After losing my Golden, Cody, after twelve years I have been walking around in a daze. This book helped me sort out my deep feelings of grief and absolute despair. These dogs are spirits in our lives, true soulmates. They are there for us through thick and thin and go far beyond being man's best friend. I could easily associate with Marlin's deep love and deep sense of loss. I wish I could sit with her over a cup of tea and just talk Goldens. A deeply passionate book.

This is a pictorial history of the author's love affair with her Golden Retrievers. The "story" is about 30 pages and the pictures about 50 or so. The story will grab you in your gut and hit you right in the heart of how you feel about your current (or former) Golden Retriever. The story about the cover photo is especially moving. For a non "how-to" book, this one is THE BEST!

Briefly..
We read this book, and others before adopting our Malamute. We found it to be right on the money. Especially important are the parts of the book that discuss on whether you personally are up to adopting a Malamute.
Personally, I wouldn't have another Dog, period. But they are absolutely not for everybody. Better read this book and some others before getting one of these precious and gorgeous animals. If you decide not to, it makes a beautiful addition to any library.

A well written book with plenty of good information which some other books don't cover enough. I recommend this book to anyone, new and old Mal owners alike.

Great for Any Dog Lover or Race Fan

This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves dogs and dreams of a life as part of the pack. It will also discourage most of us from pursuing a dream of hopping on a sled and running from Anchorage to Nome, as it lays out in no uncertain terms how much work goes into running the Last Great Race. The Iditarod is a truly unique event--over 1000 miles through the rough terrain of an Alaska winter, and that's only if you can negotiate the training, preparation, packing, vet checks and qualifying races. Fans of any age and any level of experience with the race will enjoy this view from the inside. Even if you've never actually seen a sled dog race, you will be able to appreciate the down to earth approach of the author and the practical explanation of what is going on behind the scenes while the cameras are rolling out front. Running the Iditarod is not a two week event for the mushers, it is a year long super marathon that starts all over again for most of them shortly after they make the run with their team under the Burled Arch in Nome. If you're already a fan, you will appreciate the sport even more as you realize how dedicated the mushers are to their dogs and their way of life. If you're new to the sport, it's a great primer on the race, the racers and the controlled chaos that is the Iditarod.

Imagine your best friend just returned home from a long vacation. She throws a log on the fire, pours you a glass of wine, and you each grab a corner in the couch. She then proceeds to tell you about her journey, in detail, practically everything you ever wanted to know. That's how this book reads, not like a "book" per say, more like an evening with a good friend. Author June Price explains the ins & outs of the race in detail. Answers questions you didn't even realize you were thinking about! She totally captures you. Makes me want to be there, to freeze my butt off with the best of them, the volunteers who help make this race possible. A great read!

It's a very well done account of the true happenings surrounding this great race. June has spent many years with these very people, researching, learning, and beautifully putting to paper, the extraordinary Iditarod, it's participants, and the dogs... Everyone who loves to gather more information about the inside of the race should put this on their MUST READ list. She takes you there, keeps you there, and gets you to the finish line... without even getting cold! :-) Thanks for a wonderful book, June.

Too little discussion about the differences between the european boxer and "the american style", both physical and mental differences are now very present. If you live in Europe, I would choose another book.

Author Stephanie Abraham put out another great book in 2000. Enough readers & critics enjoyed it to have it earn the same year's "Dog Writers Assoc of America" award. It's a handsome hardcover book with 220+ crisp pages. Pictures on just about every page. Abraham is dedicated to the Boxer breed. She speaks of the Boxer with admiration as only a Boxer owner could. She writes well and in easy to read fashion. Topics include caring for, general health, choosing your Boxer and traits to look for in a puppy, history, basic tips in training... and so much more. I refer to this book constantly. This is a very thorough book and anyone who owns a Boxer should own it. The only thing it doesn't mention - the older your Boxer gets, the more he slobbers. My family (including our Boxer, Max) is better off for it.

Perfect Photo and Story Book For Labrador People!
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-21
For someone like me who has spent countless hours, days and weeks in the company of four or more Labrador Retrievers, this book is a hoot. It takes light-hearted look at Labradors, sharing a bounty of beautiful photographs of man's best friends with us, and looking at the personality traits and character qualities that make them the single most popular breed in America today. Labs are among the most social of canines, yet they are remarkably calm and pacific once they know you. Which isn't to deny the fact that they are very active and energetic, and that anyone who lives with one needs to ensure the dog and he or she spend sopme time outside in vigorous play every day. But as the author tells us, we love labradors because they seem to represent the best and most admirable qualities we happen to admire.

Labradors are amazingly loyal, and are quite keyed into your emotional state and sense of well-being. As a person who sometimes suffers from migraines, I can attest that the dogs seem to reconize my symptoms and key their own behavior from this perception of the way I am feeling, being much more willing to simply take a nap with me than usual, since they seem to understand from past experience that the migraine will dirve me back to bed. They show many endearing and remarkable traits, and we find ourselves amazed by just how intelligent, perceptive, and attractive they are as a species.

Labradors also live almost exclusively in the moment, and are ethusiastic and energetic in their pursuit of fun and frolic. Anyone living in their company can attest to the fact that you are never at a loss for entertainment when your Labrador friend is around, and he or she are happy to just be with you, and are almost oo willing and too anxious to show you just how excited they are to have you around. Coming home after a long day's work means a kidn of instant celebration, with four Labradors jumping, barking, and wall-banging, so glad are they to have me back home with them. Find a human who is that glad to see you, and you have found true love, my friend. Yet it is all here in spades with the Labradors, and this entertaining little book will seerve to amuse you, educate you, and sometimes surprise you with its nuggets of information, parcels of knowledge, and bits of wisdom about just why it is that Labradors rule the roost around my house! Enjoy!

Just Labs is a book of few words an magnificent photography. This is not a book that will tell you how to raise your dog, or what kind of food to feed it, or what dog won best of show 10 years ago. It will amuse you and is guaranteed to sit on your desk at work, your coffee table, or your nightstand as a book that will make you smile. It is very easy to read and quite humorous. One section reads:

"Someone once said that it's possible to train a Lab by treating him like a three-year old child; if so then it's no wonder Labs and kids are so inseparable. Imagine a guardian who never sleeps, one with the eyes and ears to rival the best security system ever devised, one that knows roads are bad things and will steer your youngster away from them. At the same time, they realize that a short little kid with an ice-cream cone is like a gift from God."

If you want a fun book to just make you smile, this book is for you.

I was very much taken by the cover shot when I first saw this book on Amazon, the reviews too, seemed rather encouraging ... when the book arrived, I was expecting the rest of the photographs to be of similar or better quality ... am a little disappointed.

If this is an instructional book on how to raise or train Labradors, quality of photographs would not be so critical ... but its a pictorial book, and for some reason, quite a few of the photographs are missing that little extra ingredient which makes for really good photography ... perhaps if the photos had been more tightly edited, it might have made a difference ... At US$35 the book is not inexpensive, and there are better alternatives around ... just do a quick search, under photography and Labradors.

collection. The book is full of great photos paying equal homage to the "field" vs. "English" labs, and does not disciminate over color. His photography skills capture the personalities of the breed, and the depth of the relationships between dog and handler. The captions are perfect, and some will bring a tear to the eye of even the most stoic of us all.

The book is slanted toward field work, domestic life and hunting activities, rather than conformance or obedience work. My husband loved this as a gift, and he is nearly impossible to buy for. All in all, though, it is a beautiful tribute to this remarkable breed.

Ask any photography instructor, and he will say, "I don't want to see any puppy and kitty pictures!" How wrong they are. Dale does a great job of presenting the working Lab in everyday situations, from the field trial to the duck blind and the upland field, and he does it with a great sense of humor.

This book, however, is not a training manual. If you're wondering how to train Labs to do what Dale shows them doing, check out Mike Gould's "The Labrador Shooting Dog". Another great look at working Labs is Paul and Julie Knutsons' "The Pointing Labrador." Both books have great photographs of Labs in action, by the way, and the training techniques to back them up.

I buy one of these for all my new puppy families. It's complete, updated, lots of photos and very helpful information about the breed and dogs in general. A must for every first time Cavalier owner!

As D. Woods indicates, an excellent guide for this breed

D. Woods's Amazon Review describes this book very well.

We've lived with Clive, our black and tan Cavalier, for two and a half years, and haven't found one error in the book. The author is clearly an experience breeder, and describes this type of dog very well in easy to understand language.

I'm writing this Review to emphasize a point the author makes; this breed gains weight very easily, particularly if the dog is castrated or spayed. It's partly the pleading eyes and loving personality, but it must also be in the genes. It must be terrible to be so hungry all the time. Clive and I take three to five mile walks a couple of times a week, and yet he can put on two pounds in a week.

Our vet suggested that slowing Clive's eating would help him maintain a healthy weight. We tried putting rocks and later tennis balls in his food bowl, but he quickly learned to extract the impediments and scarf down his food. The Brake-Fast Dog Food Bowls - Small Red looked like a joke gift, but in fact it is amazingly effective.

Clive has to work for at least a minute to work around the prongs and finish every last morsel. The bowl can be put on a mat so it won't move, but it takes him even longer to eat when he pushes the bowl around our kitchen floor. We sometimes a bit of egg white and microwave the bowl for a few seconds to "glue" the food in place. The result:

Brake-Fast Small Dog Food Bowl: $[___]

King Charles Cavalier Spaniel: $[___]

Watching Clive growling with frustration as he pushes his bowl around the floor: Priceless

This is an excellent well rounded book written by someone who really knows and loves the breed. It is a hardcover with 144 pages of good information and great photos. If you are new to the breed and are getting only one book, this is the one to buy. It covers almost everything you can think of, although doesn't cover breeding much because serious breeders and exhibitors discourage people from breeding dogs, which they believe is best left to the people who know the breed standards and health concerns.

The title of this book was the question I was contemplating of my own life at the time. Its reassuring to know that other people are too. Kari did a great job with this book, even self published, good for you and better for us the reader that you got it to print. I laughed and identified with her self-doubt and over analysis many times. But mostly I laughed. She's honest in her concern and quest for finding recognition of just what she's contributed in her lifetime and is there merit to it. The journey for both reader and Kari provide a catharsis to reconsider our definition of "mediocrity" or just getting on with life. Great things don't always happen in a big way but little by little.

Kari Breed is masterful with the quip. She brandishes it like a fine-tuned sword that has been honed by life and polished with humor.

It's hard not to laugh most of the time that you are reading this book, whether it be funny-ha-ha laughing, or oh-dear-god-I-know-what-you-mean kind of laughing. The writing is from the perspective of an average gal talking about living an average life and being okay with it, but there is nothing average about the book itself.

Her writing is to the point, very funny, and above all, very relevant. Have you ever wondered what Douglas Adams' next book would have read like if instead of dying, he had a sex change and took plenty of estrogen pills? Okay, maybe it's just me, but I think Kari's book is a pretty good representation of what I had in mind.

She makes you realize that we are not alone, that we are all indeed very normal, or at least, we are all the sane kind of crazy.

Have you ever thought "am I the only one this is happening to?" The author has a clever ability to bring humor to life's annoying nuances. There is something in this book everyone can relate to. This is a refreshing and honest funny voice on the scene today. Buy it, read it, LAUGH!

I love it!

It's funny, it's poignant, it's real. And it's one of the best books I've read in a very long time, and I can see me reading it again and again.
