Breeds Books

As a fancier and owner of four Afghans I really enjoy reading this book. Well documented, it provides all you want to know about the breed. My only regret is that The Book is getting old and no newest editions are on sight.

An excellent and thorough accounting of the Airedale Terrier. But its scope goes beyond just the history of the breed but tackled in detail the desirable physical characteristics and the proper grooming. Outstanding visual aids leave nothing to the imagination on the proper length of coat when stripping. Again and again, I come back to this book when I am grooming. It compares the bone structure with other canines as to fully explain and offer understanding as to what is desirable physically and why. This is a must for every Airdale Terrier owner's collection.

This is an excellent reference book about the Bull Terrier. It includes both the negative and the positive aspects of owning this sometimes challenging breed of dog. Includes classic articles written by breeders instrumental in the development of the modern Bull Terrier.

This book was first published in 1951 and has been updated periodically since. This is the 1982, forth edition being reviewed. The photos are in black and white but quite good. The book gives a good overview of the history of this particular breed, it's care, breeding, training, grooming all all inbetween. This is one of the most complete works addressing a single breed I know of. For those who love this particular breed, this is a book you should really own. Over the past twenty years, the breed standards have changes somewhat (showing), unfortunately, but this does not distract from this work at all. For the history of the breed alone, this work is well worth the money. Recommend this one highly.

This is no lightweight with a few pictures and general dog stuff. A great book about a great breed. It offers history of the breed, care and characteristics. A must-read for all enthustiasts or people just thinking about their first Great Dane!

This book was originally published as The Complete Scottish Terrier in 1967. This is a new updated version of this work. Mr. Marvin was long active in this breed in the early days in this country. This volume examines in depth the history of this breed, the major champions in both the United Kingdom and the United States. One of the highlights of this book is the section on grooming the Scottish Terrier, with excellent drawings demostrating both correct and incorrect grooming. There is an extensive listing of British and American kennels that were active in this breed up to 1980. Also covered in depth is breeding axioms, conditioning show stock, bloodlines and line breeding and the standard for the breed. There is a large amount of black and white photos of past and present Scottish Terrier champions, including Scotties who won big at Westminster-best in show. Although this book is now out of print, it is not difficult to locate and is a must for anyone interested in this breed. Both the pet Scottie owner and the Show enthusiast will learn much from this volume. The cover is green and white with a large photo of the great champion "Carmichael's Fanfare" who won BIS at Westminster. This dog was handled by John Murphy and owned by Mr. & Mrs Charles Stalter.

This book has wonderful pictures and articles about every kind of dog you can think of. It rates dogs as far as temperament, feeding, exercise and grooming needs are concerned.

If you're looking for specific breed qualities that allow a dog to be shown this is not the book for you. If you love dogs and want to see some of the "newer" breeds this is the book for you.

The articles are short and easy to read without all the breed requirements found in most books of this type. It is a fun book to browse through or help find your next best friend.

This book is great-it's a head above most of the other MinPin breed books which contain just a few pages of specialized information on the Miniature Pinscher, and a lot of general dog care sections. This book covers "the old greats"...one of the neatest things is seeing photographs of Carlee's Nubby Silk and "Little Daddy" then finding them in your pet quality pups pedigree. Contains a good deal of lore, and a really neat conversation between two "old school" MinPin breeders. Discusses the breed standard and how it's changed over the years. I don't breed, so I can't speak for breeders, but I would think that breeders, future breeders, pet owners and just plain MinPin fanciers would find this book as good a read as I did.

I purchased this book because it was written by the breeder of my Brittany. The book covers the basics, from where the breed began to how to pick a puppy. I think it is a must read for those thinking of purchasing a Brittany. They are not the breed for everyone and the book addresses the ins and outs of the Brittany personality.
