Love of Goldens is wonderful book for anyone who shares their life with a golden or is thinking of adding one to the family. The photographs are beautiful and the essays and biographical stories are heartwarming.
You'll laugh alot and shed some tears before you put this book down. But be forewarned...people who have read this book have been known to suffer an irrepressible urge to run out and find the nearest breeder of Goldens.

We did. And our eight week old Maggie is sitting in my lap as I type this!

Just bought my third golden retriever, and was STILL amazed at how much I enjoyed the absolutely beautiful photography in this book. My brother got it for my Father for Christmas, and I liked it so much I bought one for myself the next day. Amusing stories to read about different goldens, too, but I had not seen a golden retriever book with such a wonderful collection of pictures on almost every page before. Definitely a keeper!!

Buy this book, and get ready for hours of in-depth, caring, humourous and above all, experienced reading, because this is the book you are looking for. I bought this book because I am new to the breed and I assure you there is absolutely no risk in purchasing a book of this merit. The Magnificent Irish Wolfhound is a very well balanced link between all the primers on the internet and the more serious 'hands on' kind of engagement, which is up to you. If you've already done some internet 'homework' like I did, and are looking for something to lift your knowledge and appreciation to the next level, I recommend this book.

More Information Than You Need

This book is a wealth of information. I'm sure that everything you need to know about a Wolfhound is in this book. However, to read the book from cover to cover can be a bit boring as much of the information is beyond the grasp of the average person and not really "need to know". It is not a good reference book as there is no index. So, for example, if you wanted read about bloat, you would not know which of the 336 pages contained this information. Instead, you would have to scan the listing of chapters in the front of the book and figure out which one may contain that data. I would recommend reading this book before purchasing any dog as much applies to most dogs and not just wolfhounds.

I loved this little book so much. Of course having a golden retriever is what made me purchase the book and it shows what a great love and bond that can form between a Golden Retriever and it's human family. My retriever "Einstein" is a blessing in a beautiful gold fur coat that I just love with all my heart. His precious nose is always at my finger tips when I'm walking around at home and his big beautiful brown eyes are filled with so much love it makes my heart swell. A golden gives so much unconditional love and all they want in return is as much love as the give. This books tells that story over and over again. I never get tired of hearing it.

I felt so honored when asked to provide my Golden story for this book, and when it arrived I let it sit for a few days. I was worried that some of the stories would be sad and open old wounds for me. One day I sat down and read it cover to cover and am a better person for doing so. Author Margo gently nudged each and every one of her authors to speak from their hearts in their own voices and each tale is utterly unique and beautiful. This book pays a fitting homage to the most loving and companionable breed of all time, the Golden Retriever. It is a wonderful testimony to what adopting a rescued Golden can do to enrich the lives of the adopter and adoptee.

My Golden Frosty's story in in Margo's book. I read it first when I bought it, I was so proud. Then I started reading each of the other wonderful stories and was feeling every emotion, from tears to happiness and whatever lies in between. Each and every story brought such emotion to me. There are so many out there who love Goldens so much they devote their lives to them. I am very proud to be included in this wonderful book and to have been owned by such a wonderful dog.

I found myself laughing out loud on almost every page. Mary Beth Crain seems to embody the essence (and the quirks) of living through the process of being a caregiver, grieving her loss and moving across bereavement with her companion Truman. Her humor shines through, giving a light hearted overview of a serious subject. We need more books on Care Giving and the Bereavement Process that uplift our spirits and giving us a good "Belly Laugh" along the way. KUDOS !!For the Laughter!

Aside from being more-than-a-little horrified that she went away for the weekend knowing her cat was ouside with its lower jaw ripped off....this was a wonderful book.

It's a lovely story of how animals help heal our hearts.

But, I still have trouble resolving the woman who wrote this book as the same woman who left her maimed cat alone for the weekend. Temporary insanity is the only explanation. She really should have left that part out.

I really related to this story as I too, lost my husband two years ago with cancer. Also my chihuahuas and cats and birds have been my salvation. I really understand where this lady is coming from. She did an excellant job of relating the real feelings one experiences with a death of a loved one. My hat is off to Mary Beth as a really great writer and may she find the happiness she deserves. I too, believe there is a connection with dog and God.Carole

I found this book while searching for manuals on how to raise my new chihuahua "baby." He came into my life not because I had lost someone to cancer like the author, but as a last-chance effort to get over a broken heart. In the end the cause of the loss didn't matter; I could totally relate to the author, her grief and the healing power of 6 pounds of atomic puppy.

My thanks to the author for a book that was an integral part of my recovery and for validating all the feelings I thought were mine alone.

This book is not for the literary snob, or high-brow reader; however, it's pure delight for anyone who thinks they'll never love again after a loss.

I'm planning to get one of these precious little dogs next summer, but I've already begun my research by reading books about the breed. I've not read all that I plan to yet, but so far this book is the best I've read. The chapters on grooming, training and behavior were especially relevant and informative for a new shih tzu owner, as these are the topics I feel are of critical importance. I'm sure I will refer to this book again and again in the future. If you can only get one book on the shih tzu, this is the one you should buy!

I looked at quite a few books about Bassets before deciding to buy this one. As a new owner of a pet Basset, I wanted a book that would tell me what to expect and how to care for my new friend. Many other books focused on training for show; this book tells you all about Bassets. There is some information for those interested in showing and registering a Basset, but this is a good resource for anyone who just wants to love, care for and understand the lovable little hounds. Highly recommended! And even better if you check this out and read all about them before you adopt a new friend! Enjoy!

However, these are two of the top books that I would give to anyone who has an interest in the Bernese Mountain Dog. I presently own both books.

This is a great book that devotes a page to every AKC-recognized dog breed. It gives a brief history, major characteristics, and a short story about a famous or interesting dog for each breed. Pages are all full color with big, clear photos. The book strikes a perfect balance between providing good information while not getting too in-depth. I borrowed this from the library with my five year old in mind, but my seven year old is the one who can't put it down. I am here to buy her very own copy. This should be #1 on the list for any young dog lover!

Edited to note: When we got our recently purchased copy from Amazon, my daughter noticed that there were several breeds listed which hadn't been in the library's older copy. This is a new edition and has been updated to include all recently AKC-accepted breeds.

I purchased this book for my daughter's 9th birthday. She wanted a book with lots of real dog pictures in it so she could draw them correctly. I saw this book online and since it's from the American Kennel Club, knew it would be a good representation of the most popular dog breeds around. Boy was I right! This book has great color photos of each breed and interesting facts too. My daughter loved this book! She is also using it to draw dogs from (drawing is her passion). Anyway, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone buying for children because the photos are big and bright and the text is child-friendly.

I loved every single part of this book. I loved to look at the pictures of dog breeds, and try to see what my beagle mix is mixed WITH. After I looked through it, I read about how train your dog, and all that information. people think that part is boring. They are just like 3 year-olds, never looking at the words of a picture book, just looking at the pictures. I loved it. I keep on checking it out the the library! I check it out so much, my mom gets frustrated when I do check it out anymore!

My five year old is a huge dog fan. I wanted to find a book for her that really fit with her interests and her level. This book really fit the bill. It has fantastic photos of real dogs, shows where the dogs' origins are from, and gives average size along with a small graphic that shows the dog size in comparison to an adult. The index is easy to read so my five year old can look up a certain dog in the index and easily find it. It has a lot of information about each dog and has kept her interest for hours on end. My only complaint would be that the cover is not holding up to the usage demands! A fantastic book for any young dog lover of any age!

As there is such a small gene pool here in Australia, I felt that I needed to get as much information as possible about possible genetic diseases and if they can be bred out.

This book should be on every dog breeder's bookshelf!
In the introduction Dr Padgett candidly writes:

` My goal is to help prevent serious genetic diseases in dogs, both in breeds and in kennels. If you learn the material presented here, follow the guidelines, and apply this information to your breed or your kennel, you will reduce the frequency of disease, and it will not take you twenty-five years to do it.
You need three things to accomplish this task: knowledge, information, and honesty. All three are within your control '

A professor of Pathology, one of the world's most celebrated researchers, writers and lecturers on the entire subject of canine genetic diseases, George A Padgett DVM has published numerous papers and has appeared before almost 100 breed clubs speaking on his specialty.

In his book ` Control of Canine Genetic Diseases' Dr Padgett addresses breed clubs and challenges them to encourage and reward members with honest information regarding the diseases within their lines.

He starts off by explaining the background, and then goes on to explain how to trace disease in your own dogs with a chapter that is titled ` The development of pedigrees'. In this chapter Dr Padgett teaches the reader to keep records and gives a number of scenarios of which the readers can test themselves to see if they are on the right track with this lesson.

Other topics he addresses are; modes of inheritance; the interpretation and use of pedigrees to determine the genetic status of given dogs and, the probable mode of inheritance of a trait; test mating; registries and prioritizing genetic disease; tables and probabilities; breed clubs and control of genetic disease; and the last chapter is aptly titled ` For the breeder '.

Dr Padgett is not a geneticist and doesn't claim to be one. He even admits that some of his data finding procedures would have geneticists screaming.
He is not suggesting breeders' refrain from ever breeding with an affected or carrying dog. He's realistic about breeding from the best dog from an overall perspective, but instead he explains about breeding out or diluting disease in order to lower the chances of producing affected animals, whilst maintaining honesty.
He clearly states that he acknowledges a breeder shouldn't ever breed their dog to an animal of lesser quality than what they want to represent them, their line and breed, just because they're making a test-mating.

George A. Padgett writes fluidly and convincingly and at times is quite amusing. I found his advice on prioritizing disease very reasonable. He explains the necessity to develop a hierarchy of disagreeability for various diseases by evaluating the severity of the disease, and its impact on the dog itself, and the people that own it.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to every breed club, member and breeder whose goal it is to produce healthy, functional and beautiful dogs.

Even if you are not interested in the Bulldogs of Georgia you probably will find "Damn Good Dogs" a delightful book; beautifully illustrated, the book relates the history behind the English bulldogs that have become the University of Georgia's mascot beginning in 1956. Sonny Seiler, who has owned the bulldogs, has put together (with Kent Hannon), a pleasing book filled with many photographs. A chapter is devoted to each of the dogs relating their lives and what occurred while they were mascot and the growing fame of the Ugas. I first saw this book on a visit to Savannah and was charmed by it from the moment I opened the cover.

This is a large format book that was thoughtfully designed and is a great tribute to the remarkable dogs named Uga.

I am a lifelong University of Alabama fan but I have always known and admitted that Uga is - bar none - the coolest dog on the planet. And any dog who bites back at an Auburn player knows his football! My all-time favorite was Uga V and I was thrilled when he was rightfully named the greatest mascot ever by Sports Illustrated and made their cover. I was also excited to see this book.

This book is a great overview of the lives of the Ugas, their owners, and the Georgia football program. If you love dogs and college football, you'll love this book.

Uga flies free on Delta, has an air-conditioned doghouse and an official Student ID Card, eats steak, attends social affairs, occasionally wears a tux, has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, in Coca Cola ads, in Playboy magazine, in Animals Who's Who, on credit cards, in movies, TV shows--and more! Following lavish funeral tributes, Ugas I through V were interred in a mausoleum at Sanford Stadium with inspiring epitaphs outlining their achievements engraved on bronze tablets. Uga VI has already made a name for himself "woofing" his encouragement to a well-deserved SEC title in 2002. GO DAWGS and long live Uga VI.

The most affectionate dog breed has been well portrayed with comical sense of captions with each picture.

For all Dachshund lovers this is a must. It is not big nor thick.
so, it is easy for anyone to go through in short time, which makes you wish for a bigger or thicker book with more photos. :)

Over all, this book confirms WHY you love Dachshunds.
