I first took this book out of the library by reserving it on-line. I hadn't realized it was a children's book by the description.
After I read it I thought it would be a perfect gift for my three year old cousin who has a six month old boxer. She absolutely
loved the big, easy to read words and the bright glossy photos. Its a great read for young children. I enjoyed it too!

She was a brilliant woman in a man's world, defying the past to conquer the future...
Born into the grinding poverty of post-war Appalachia, tall and beautiful Geri-Lo Lockley hung onto her dreams with hope and relentless ambition. In the rolling, lush grasslands of Kentucky, she found her destiny.
Drawn to the lithe, pounding grace of thoroughbreds raised, trained and driven to win, she discovered her genius...matching her wits against the top trainers and breeders in a dazzling, high stakes game Then tragedy shattered her life and a web of deceit and betrayal darkened her future...
Without a name or a past, she fled to New York's excitement and promise, to the legendary Belmont Race Track and the traditions that drove her to be better than best. She had the magic to reach the heights, the golden peak where the difference between first and second place is measured in millions - where she was the prize men vowed to possess. But when love was at last within reach, Geri-Lo faced the final gamble, risking a brutal man's terrifying vengeance for her once-on-a-lifetime chance at happiness..
In any winner's circle she was always...A Breed Apart. 599 pages!

Quite A Journey

I read this book in one sitting which is not something I have done in years. Once I started reading Mr. Woods Journey to
Redemption I was fascinated by how someone who had come from so much especially a BLACK MAN could travel such an horrible
road by choice, by adrenaline and not really by need (which is the reasoning one hears for so much of criminal activity).
The message of this book spoke volumes. It did not whitewash the excitement and rush the author got from his criminal activity
but it also did not sugarcoat his prison experience. This book should be a must read for teenage boys although I fear some
of the graphic descriptions might prevent that. This book is magnificent even though it does venture into preaching at the
end which a factor Mr. Woods can be forgiven given his "preaching" heritage.

I ran across this book by accident looking for books on the Shire Horse. It is nominally about Shires and the people who raise
them but in a larger sense it is about a type of community, the rural English village, that is now scarce if not totally extinct.
In Stranger's village everyone in the community knows and cares for one another. The animals, wild and domestic, are part of that community but she doesn't resort to anthropomorphic pretenses. Both man and beast are realistically portrayed, motivated by plausible responses to their circumstances according to their abilities. This book sold five million copies when published forty years ago and seems to have put Stange on the map as a publishable writer. She later published a couple of dozen more books, the latest in 2002. She became a professional dog trianer after this book. I don't know active she is today since she must be, shall we say, into her retirement years. If you like James Herriot's work you'll love this book.

Ever seen a picture of a Rough Fell, a Wessex Saddleback, or a Welsh Black? This slender green volume (which measures 10"
wide by 7.5" tall) has magnificent black and white photographs of each of them, as well as virtually all of the other purebred
British livestock in existence in the mid-1940's. Each photograph is accompanied by a one-page history of the breed. The
text is promotional, rather than scientific or objective, but who cares? The photographs in the book make it well worth the
price to anyone interested in the history of British agriculture, bio-diversity or the preservation of rare breeds of livestock.
Even the advertizements, all appearing at the end of the book, are interesting to read.
