Excellent overview of the Labrador Retriever
Helpful Votes: 43 out of 44 total.
Review Date: 1997-06-03
Even though it was written over a decade ago, Nicholas' book on the Labrador Retriever remains one of the better books available on this breed. It is becoming a little outdated on some of the information on the show and field scenes, but it remains highly informative for those thinking about buying a Labrador Retriever. It is also profusely illustrated with a wealth of photos. If you will buy only one book on the Labrador Retriever, this should be it. It describes the breed's development in Canada and Britain in the last century, outlines its ability to work out in the field retrieving birds, and brings the reader up to date on the show scene up to the early 80's. In addition, it includes chapters on the care and training of the Labrador Retriever.

I thought that the book was great. It gave me a better understanding of the breed. It also helped me with the choosing of my puppy (a Chinese shar-pei). Thanks amazon.com for having a book on the breed in which I have been trying to find out more information about.

From the dustjacket: In this book, the history of the modern breed is outlined, the Breed Standards are discussed, and dual registration is explained. All aspects of ownership, health care (general and breed specific), management and breeding are covered, before the wealth of activities open to the breed are explored: showing, Trials & Tests, Obedience & Agility, explosive detection, and search and rescue work. There is also a chapter on the breed's role throughout the world. This complete illustrated guide will prove to be an invaluable source of reference and guidance. Based on a lifetime's research by one of the Border Collie/Working Sheep Dog's foremost authorities.

This book is excellent as it is not the typical generic product that you sometimes see. This book is filled with useful information, positive reinforcement training and wonderful tips.
As a part of the American Boxer Rescue Association as well as the IAABC and APDT, I will gladly be recommending this book to clients who own boxers.

Not a book...but great photos!

While this wasn't a true "book" packed with information about Boxers, it's well worth the money to have such wonderful photos of the greatest dogs on Earth! I've taken all of mine out of the book format, framed them and hung them in my office where I can see them every day. The photographer did a wonderful job of capturing the "essence" of the Boxer.

Very attractive boxer breed book covers all aspects of boxer ownership and care
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-14
The pages within this book have a very attractive setup which makes the book and the text very appealing to read. Nobody wants to read plain informative text, especially not children. The text is guided with clear, colorful images of both cropped and uncropped boxers (always short tails) as well as boxes containing extra information, expert advice, senior boxer tips and family-friendly tips for improving the relationships between children and their boxers.

Cynthia P. Gallagher did a very good job with this book. Although it does not look like such a big book it does contain a huge collection of information on boxers. It was a good idea to include the senior dog tips because you are not always buying a new puppy. You can adopt a dog that was left or rescued or still needs to be rescued. In the last case an appropriate book on dealing with rescue dogs will probably be necessary though. When I was little I did not like to read books but I'm sure that I would have loved to read this one. Also I'm sure no boxer lover can pass by this book after seeing the cutest, most beautiful boxer pup on the book cover, with his big, sad eyes that are watching you, asking to "please take me home".

This is another great animal book that is high interest, and written in concise, easy to read sentences. Each chapter is a page of information with an accompanying photograph of the dog. Key vocabulary words are in bold letters and included in a short glossary in the back. The table of contents and index are easy to use for beginners. This book will be "pup"ular with young dog lovers.

My husband and I read this book in the hopes of hearing the personality traits and training issues with Boxers. We learned more than we could have hoped. This book was honest, never saying the Boxer is right for everyone, but saying if you can't live with this trait please consider another breed. We will probably adopt a Boxer and this book helped make the decision.
