Comprehensive book on the Friendliest Dog
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-26
This book covers everything from the history of the breed, where to acquire your new family member, diet, exercise, grooming, housebreaking, health, training and even end of life issues.

Each chapter is well organized, clearly written and has nice color illustrations. Inserts throughout the book includes helpful tips that reinforce the material.

The appendix includes the standard of the breed, various breed associations, listing of pet sitters, therapy societies, training resources, rescue groups, websites, and publications.

A DVD accompanies the book on training, which is not Bichon Specific.

If you're considering a Bichon or already have one, this book is one of the best.

Conclusion:

If you have allergies and want a dog that doesn't shed, needs little exercise, need a loving pet and companion, and want a very intelligent friend, I highly recommend a Bichon Frise.

I highly recommend this book.

Wonderful book on Rare Heritage turkeys
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-25
If you are interested in raising Rare Heritage Turkeys this book is a "must buy". The book starts with the natural history of turkeys and follows their use in agriculture from domestication to the unnatural boring tasting Large White industrial turkeys of today.

This book has had a large impact. It pointed out that the old delicious varieties of turkey were dying out and encouraged a grass roots resurgence in interest in the old varieties.

The chapter on rare turkey varieties is excellent and has wonderful photos. This book is a very enjoyable read despite causing concerns about what we, as humans, are doing to our food supply.

This book provides wonderful information on rare turkeys, and is not a primer on how to raise rare varieties of turkeys. If you want a primer, the best book out there is Marsden and Martin's "Turkey Management". It is out of print but usually not difficult to find.

Remember, it is only the modern industrial turkey that is stupid! The rare heritage breeds are intelligent and fun. And they sure can fly!

Winsome and Adorable Black Labrador Puppy Calendar!
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-29
Last fall I graced my home with a new Black Labrador Retriever puppy that we named Annabelle Lee, and she has quickly proved to be an unalloyed blessing for us in terms of her personality and her antics around the house. For all of you that love Black Labs in particular, you will know just how adorable and irresistable a Black Lab puppy can be. This calendar reminds us all of what a wonderful gift they are to us humans, and many of the photographs gracing this calendar remind me of sweet little Annabelle, who now is a yearling, and who graces the scales at well over seventy pounds, a puppy no more. Alas, like toddlers, they grow up to soon to suit those of us that love them, and although she is still a joy to behold, we all seem to lose something precious when our puppy matures. Capture that brief moment in time with a calendar like this, one which can remind you all year long just how special our Black Labrador Retriever puppy friends are. Enjoy!

Nice Desk-Sized Black Lab Calendar For Your Enjoyment!
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-09
While I have enjoyed having both Yellow and Balck Labradors around the house for more than twenty years now, a special place in my heart will always belong to Black Labs, as my first two dogs were such sweet and faithful friends that I have nothing but the fondest memoreis of them since they passed a few years ago in their mid-teens, a relatively old age for Labs. This calendar reminds of what a joy such stalwart canines are, and how very much they can come to mean to us. I have two Black Lab females now, and they light up my life, as do the two yellow Lab males they share the house with. This beautifully photographed and handily-sized desk calendar will add color and zest to your workspace, and give you a lovely daily reminder of just how lucky we humans are to have Labradors barkign around the house as our constant companions. Enjoy!

A Great Dog Book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-11
Starts with the history of Bloodhounds in Belgium at St. Hubert's monastery, where Bloodhounds were known as St. Huberts. Discusses the temperament and has a detailed description of the breed. There is a section of proper care including need for veterinary care, good food, exercise, and love. See the fabulous detail of the writing, "Today, about 400 different dog breeds exist....Some can weigh as much as 200 pounds (91 kg). Others are small enough to fit in the palms of your hands. Despite these differences, all dogs belong to the same scientific family. It is called Canidae. This name comes from the Latin word canis, which means dog." Finally, Bloodhounds looks at puppies and getting a dog. The glossary is very good and the web site www.adpub.com is recommended for further information. Good index. I loved the calendar! The Australain Cattle Dogs (Blue Heelers) are gorgeous animals and fine pets. We have a 2 year old female and love her like part of the family. These dogs are one of the most intelligent breeds. The photos in the calendar are very good specimen's of this breed. Well done!

Also included, are interesting facts relating to each breed. This feature is great. I especially enjoyed this feature relating to the many rare breed included in this book. Hello everyone!

I wanted to let my readers know that The Book of the Greyhound was recently awarded the Maxwell Award as the best Single Breed Pet Guide for 2000. The Award was presented by the Dog Writers Association of America at a Ceremony and Dinner at the Southgate Tower Hotel in NYC on February 11, 2001. I was grealy honored to receive this award and want to take this opportunity to thank my Editor, Connie Isbell, and everyone at TFH Publications who worked so diligently to bring this book about.

The Book of the Greyhound covers just about every detail related to owning and loving a Greyhound. It covers the history, standards, performance activities, showing your Greyhound, adoption, top show dogs and producers, and breeders from all over the world. This is the most comprehensive book published about the Greyhound and has been very well received and reviewed by its readers.
