Breeds Books

After making every conceivable mistake in our quest to find something fun to do with our retired racing greyhound, we found this book. What a great resource! The author walks you through all the steps to get started in amateur performance events. It's also been a wonderful reference work as we've continued to participate and learn.

I have been enchanted with sighthounds since I was a young girl. I'm still in awe at how they've survived since ancient times virtually the same. This book covers sighthound breeds commonly seen at AKC dog shows: Afghan Hound; Borzoi; Irish Wolfhound; Saluki; Scottish Deerhound; ect.... But there are also fascinating histories of breeds virtually unknown in the USA, or even outside of their homelands. There is also information given on a few breeds believed to be extinct. Photos are not provided for every breed due to the breed's obscurity. The photos & line drawings are all in black & white; some are quite old so the quality isn't the best. I must add that this book is the only one I know of to date that includes information on the Silken Windhound! If you are infatuated by sighthounds as I am, I definately recommend this book to you! It's not for the casual dog person though.

Good book for choosing a dog. Lot's of information and pictures on the various breeds, although, we ended up getting a mutt from the shelter.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a great reference for selecting a dog that will fit your lifestyle and emotional needs. No fluff!!! And fun and easy to read.

This book answers the age old question "What is breed type?" in a clear and easy to read format. It should be in every dog person's library.

Solving The Mysteries Of Breed Type by Richard Beauchamp (syndicated columnist, dog show judge, and former publisher of "Kennel Review" magazine) is a straightforward and detailed instructional guide for aspiring dog breeders, and novice dog show judges, and purebreed connoisseurs aspiring to acquire a degree of professionalism, about discerning the subtle distinctions of breed type. Individual chapters competently address what to look for in various physical characteristics, from coat and head shape to silhouette and movement. Black-and-white photographs enhance the meticulous text descriptions in this succinctly written resource which should be considered a core reference title for personal, professional, and community library collections.

I attribute our daughter's early learning of shapes (including more difficult ones) to this book. The book has beautiful photos of Wegman's dogs with various items that show what a shape is. There is only one concept per page. The pictures are not cluttered. The dogs are cute & amusing. It was one of the best book purchases we made in the preschool years.

My 3 year old son was having trouble learning shapes until I bought this book. The way William Wegman shows the shapes, along with the pictures of the dog Fay,helped my son learn the shapes! Now I'n going to have to buy the rest of his children's books!

Very informal, about what you'd expect from any other, much larger, book concerning a specific breed. Straight and to the point.

This rottweiler book contains alot of information and pictures of the Rottweiler. I recommened this book to people interested in the breed, and to people who are serious about getting a Rottweiler for a companion.

As somebody interested in learning about journalism, I loved this book. The author is a warm, wise and very funny guide through weird and wonderful times. He really captures his love of reporting, and of reporting well - an inspiring thing these days, when there is so much cynicism about the media. He made me want to be just like him - and has inspired me to visit Eureka, too! A rich, rewarding read. And not just for people into journalism - it evokes a whole era and a whole way of life in a way that will steal into anyone's soul.

Mel Lavine's "A Strange Breed of Folks" is a well-written, readable, fascinating account, not only of his career as a newspaperman but as a witer and producer for NBC and CBS. For an intimate look and insights into the Media, the book is a must read. The reader will meet famous people in TV(such as Barbara Walters)and politics(such as Ronald Reagan)and learn more personally about their strengths and frailties as human beings. The reader will also discover the differences between television news of the past and that of today, the present that pales beside those who came before.
Several quotes are especially striking. 1.From Lavine's first editor, Norman "Red" McCann: "The press is the last outpost in a republic. Once the bastards get control of the government, once they get the courts, there's nothing left but the press . . . ." 2.Interview with James Farley, FDR's inside man and postmaster general: "Citing the Roosevelt landslide in the depression years of the 1930s, he said,'voters were motivated by fear, not hope. Today, in general, people vote against someone or something rather than for.' Although he claimed no special knowledge about television, he believed the principle still held true with the new technology." 3. Near the end of the book after mention of well-known journalists, Lavine writes, "Walter [Cronkite]was of the same generation and, with the possible exception of Murrow, the most famous broadcast journalist of all. But not even Cronkite could escape the consequences of growing old in a big machine that had become all process and no heart, all business and no mission."
"A Strange Breed of Folks" is a must read.

It recounts many stories and experiences from Tibbie owners all over the world and also has sections on Tibbies in specific countries, not just in the US. Every Tibbie person should have a copy.

Concise, clearly presented information. Very pleased with this book ... it covers all bases on this amazing breed of dog.

The best book I have read on training gundogs. The author shows you how to recognise your own faults when training a young dog.
Should be read by all parents?

This book is well written and laid out in a way that makes sense. It's a step by step type of book that anyone can follow. I've read several books on training spaniels to hunt and retrieve. This is one of the better ones. I've owned and bred Field Bred English Springer Spaniels for the past 18 years and recommend this book to anyone with a pup to train. This was one of the first books I read on training spaniels and is still one of the best.
