I am a very detail-oriented person, and this book answered all of my questions and some I wouldn't have known to have! I feel well-prepared for my new pom and am confident I can make informed decisions about the health, safety, and happiness of my pup. The pictures are wonderful too - I'm sure this book would already be dog-eared (no pun intended) if it wasn't a hardcover!

Everything you need to know about the breed: getting a new dog, raising a puppy, care for the lactating mother, personality characteristics, house training, health aspects etc. There are good illustrations and beautiful color pics too. The Best Puppy Raising Advice Book!
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-10
Before I adopted my puppy, I bought several puppy care books, including this one. This book was by far the best. In the section covering "what to expect from your growing pup" the author tells us what to expect from our puppy at different ages throughout puppyhood. She was right on point. I lived by this book when my puppy was growing, and referred back to it when I adopted my second dog. There is also a wonderful section about healthcare and first aid which helps us deal with day to day healthcare issues, and helps identify which matters require a vet's care and which ones can be taken care of at home. I refer back to this book quite often. I have also purchased this book as a gift for several friends and family members as each took a puppy into their family. This book is an indispensible tool in raising a puppy.

You know what?
This book rules.
I've been waiting for Quincy for some time now.
We read it to our unborn child 1x a week now.
There's nothing like Quincy on the shelf. It's 100% genius.
If you already own it, then you're Einstein.

For those who dream of timeless spaces, paradises eternally reborn, the message of the divine as told by the body reptilian, of touching the infinite through contemplation of its evolving finite forms, this volume of lovingly crafted expressions will yield pleasures anew with each re-reading. Born of an obviously intimate connection between the author and her cherished subjects, "Reptiles: A Noble Breed" succeeded in awakening in this reader a genuine appreciation of the earth and its amazing ability to render in flesh and blood the exquisite reflection of the source of being through its living creatures. This book is for people of all ages who love to discover the unexpected in the everyday, and comfort and familiarity in the new and exotic. A soothing bedtime companion, you will return to this work of touchstone creativity again and again. For those who dream of the unity of all things this book will be a treasure forever.

James Spencer shows different scenarios to set up for training your retriever. These tests can help all hunting retrievers: from your companion in the blind to your field trial champion. Note this book does not go into teaching commands. It focuses on marking and blind setups. He also goes on to discuss different types of competition. This book is filled with ideas and concepts you can put to use next time you are in the field.

Anyone wanting to learn the fine details of training their dog for hunt tests or field trials could learn a great deal fromn this book. Mr. Spencer breaks down the various factors which play in setting up training sessions or tests into component pieces. I have found many people do not understand why their dogs do what they do faced with various factors of wind, terrain and mark placement. This book will help the novice and experienced trainer begin to analyze these factors. One result is a better sense of what your dog dog nees to learn to be successful in field competitions. It's a great book for someone aspiring to become a judge.

Outstanding book filled with lessons about hunting..and life

In A Rough Shooting Dog, Charles Fergus made me think: about nature, about hunting, about dogs, about birth and death and the cycles of life. Most importantly, he reminded me of the simple joy I had as a child when I experienced the sights, sounds and smells of nature. Thanks, Charles, I'm about to hit 40......and I had almost forgotten.

A book for the THINKING bird dog person.

Those of us who hunt over dogs love our dogs. Few of us can articulate that love as well as Mr. Fergus has done in this book. Gracefully written, sensitive, honest, and plainly passionate, this is a book you'll want to read slowly. To read it quickly would only mean coming to its end too soon. A keeper.

I purchased this book as a first edition back in 1969 David and Charles press England, since then I reckon I have read it most months. The articles are interesting and hold ones attention to the fact that these dogs are so special. The photography is excellent, being packed out with what one wants to see-plenty of Salukis. It methodically lists all colour types and both coursing and show strain the coursing strains being obviously stronger and larger dogs.It is an obsolute must for the Saluki lover and I cant imagine any book matching its quality of words and pictures, especially the usually tacky USA publications we see on dogs, which are usually only an ego trip for the breeds owner, this book is not such a book, well it is typically English, isn`t it/-thanks Don

The depth of detail is phenomenal. I have been with Saluqis/Salukis for 20+ years, and I have learned so much from Gail's book. We have talked so much about form following function, but Gail's book illustrates the importance of functionality and captures our love of El Hor. I am glad to have actually shared my views with Gail on numerous occasions. She is a wonderful writer and awesome advicate of our Salukis. I highly recommend this book as an essential to understanding our beloved gift called the Saluki.
