Moving story about a puppy in training to be a guide dog. Wonderfully moving text and absolutely beautiful pictures. As a puppy raiser for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, I truly appreciate the beauty and accuracy of this story which follows a puppy from the arrival at the puppy raiser's home until graduation as a working part of a guide dog team. A true classic that is appropriate for all ages, this book tells lovingly about the joys, laughter, love and pain of raising a puppy that will some day give another the gift of independence and mobility.

Must read for any service dog puppy raisers

I am a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence and love this book. Any puppy raiser can relate even if you don't raise pups just for the blind (like me).

A great gift as well.

This is a wonderful book! I read it frequently -- whenever I want to remember what is REALLY important. Of course, my face is wet with tears by the time I'm done, but they are tears of gratitude. Read this book when you need to remind yourself that what matters in life is not fame or fortune, but love. Once again, animals show us how it is done.

I love this book!!! It is not only an inspiration for puppy raisers, but also a look at life in general. Everyone should read it. I am a puppy raiser in FL and raised a puppy who looks just like Otis - what a bonus for me.

Why is this book out of print? It is so magnificent!!!...

There is no greater love than the love from a Vizsla. I own 2 boys, brothers, and this book is right on. My boys are very different exhibing different personality traits although they have the same parents, 1 litter apart from one another. A must read for anyone who is contemplating owning this very active, loving, tender, breed.

This book was highly recommended to me by a Vizsla dog breeder as the authority on raising and training your Vizsla. After reading the book I have to agree that this is an excellent book. It covers all aspects of the breed from birth to death. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in buying this lovely breed of dog or to anyone who is currently the owner of a Vizsla.

A charming story about a fly fisherman and his dog
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-19
"Home Waters" is a charming story about a fly fisherman and his dog. It is Monninger's memoir and tribute to his dog, Nellie, an eleven-year-old Golden Retriever, who he has recently learned has cancer. He decides to take a road trip from his home in New Hampshire to visit some of his favorite fishing spots in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. Monninger takes the reader along for the ride, describing the details of his fishing trips -- where he sets up, which type of bait he uses, how he adjusts his technique to the circumstances -- and how Nellie accompanies him in all he does -- how she sniffs at each stick and stone as she explores a new area, how she snuggles into his sleeping bag on cold nights, how she taught herself to dive under water after him. As he makes his way through the trip, he reminisces about earlier fishing trips and other experiences he and Nellie have shared.

I loved the tone of this book. Monninger has a pleasant, matter-of-fact way of telling a story. I especially liked how he conveyed his simple love and respect for Nellie just in the way he interacted with her and in his reports of their conversations: "I told Nellie we were done for the night. She seemed grateful." Or, "I told her she was a good dog." When Nellie encountered a harvested potato field, she gave her best shot at retrieving the hundreds of potatoes left on the ground, only to be defeated by the magnitude of the task. Monninger says, "I consoled her on the walk back to the truck, telling her we all have such days, then fed and watered her. I told her to lay down on her dog bed and she did." After he returns to his hotel: "When I unhooked Nellie's leash inside the room, she put her nose on the edge of the bed, asking permission to get up. I told her to go ahead, but not to hog the whole thing. She curled at the foot of the bed, tail to nose. I sat besider her and gave her a rub. In a little while she began to snore. I read for awhile, then turned out the light." I especially related to his dilemma when he went fishing at Yellowstone. "The hard part was explaining to Nellie it is against park regulations to take a dog into the back country.... Nellie wasn't pleased with it... and when I locked her in the back of the truck, she whined to come with me. I was firm with her and caved only enough to give her a biscuit." I've never been fly fishing, but I enjoyed Monninger's equally droll explanations of how it works, the strategy (and luck) that goes into it. I think I now understood why "the one that got away" haunts every fisherman.

What a shame that books this worthwhile have to go out of print. In its quiet, unassuming way, I found this to be a classic work of animal-lover's literature. Like at least one other reviewer, I wondered whether I could get through the entire book after reading the first paragraph, which seems to be foretelling a tragedy. But I did, and instead shared something more like a triumph. I will never give up my copy of this book. I hope the used copies available here will be enjoyed by many more people.

Monninger uses all his senses in his prose. Unassuming details become necessary pieces of a fabulous story about a man's love for his best friend, one that can't verbally reciprocate the bond but shows an appreciation of the author through her patience and obedience. Bravo!

In this memoir, author Joseph Monninger recounts a very special fly-fishing trip with his best friend, eleven-year-old Golden Retriever, Nellie. Nellie has been diagnosed with cancer and Monninger decides to let the illness run its course- but not without one last grand encounter with nature. The pair traverse the country by pickup truck- camping, fishing and otherwise enjoying nature and the company of each other. This is a great book for those who fish because there are lots of references to the techniques and joys of fly-fishing.But the touching glimpses of the bond between man and dog, and of dealing with the curves life throws at us, add memorable depth and make this wonderful story of interest to everyone, fisher-person or not.

Review Date: 2008-11-25
As the title says, this book should be a must read for all dog owners and law makers and even people looking at getting a dog. I'm not even finished with the book and I've learned a lot I didn't know, like the fact that all the garbage the media is spouting about Pit Bulls being killer, blood thirsty dogs with locking jaws is actually the garbage the dog fighters are spouting to make their dogs seem like mean and ferocious fighting/killing machines. I wish the media could see that what they are saying is the same things the dog fighters are saying and stop, but ignorance is bliss as they say. Why find out, and report, the truth when myth's and lies sell so much better. I also didn't know that almost everyone fighting to ban Pit Bull's uses the arguement that Pit Bull's are different from other dogs. Since when is my question.

I bet a lot of people would be suprised by what they'd learn if they read this book, especially about some of the dog breeds that used to be looked upon as vicious. It's very informative and I'd recommend it to anyone looking at getting a dog.

As a dog trainer I especially liked this honest and frank book. As a Pit Bull and Doberman owner I enjoyed the historical look into the problems of owning a "public menance". The rabid fear encouraged by the media has cost thousands of dogs to be killed for no other reason but unresponcible owners and a great lead-in on the 6:00 news. ALL dogs can bite; all dogs can kill.

The Truth Behind The Breed

Before the Pit Bull it was the Rottweiler. Before the Rottweiler it was the Doberman. Before the Doberman it was the German Shepherd and so on.
The truth is ANY dog can bite, and all do. The truth is ANY dog can be trained for aggression. The truth is ANY dog can be fodder for the media's insatiable appetite for tabloid TV and sensationalism.
Karen Delise has written what should become a must have on any dog trainers book shelf or in the library of anyone who cares about and respects dogs.
Here is an open ledger of the real Pit Bull. Here is a book that honestly exposes what every dog trainer and behaviourist should know - What our dogs do and how they behave is entirely due to how we interact, train and socialise with dogs.
This educative volume should be mandatory reading for every student journalist.

This book should be mandatory reading in schools so young kids can understand the reason why some dogs bite, since obviously their parents dont explain it to them. And it also just goes to show you how ridiculous our politicians are when they have FACTS in front of them about dog bite cases but still rely on the media for their information. This book totally opened up my eyes to the reasons and causes for dog bites that I was unaware of.THANK YOU,THANK YOU Karen Delise for writting this AMAZIMG book.I hope millions of people will read it.

Like many people who are new to living with a Yorkie, I purchased lots of Yorkshire Terrier guides. Lord knows, there are a ton of them out there, so its very confusing to choose the right one. I considered myself very lucky when I came upon this book. I had questions that I could not find an answer for anywhere. If only I had purchased this book in the beginning, I could have saved a lot of money and frustration, as it helped me with every question I had, supplying me with valuable advice found in no other book. It is the only book that I still reach for time and again, and it never lets me down. Mrs. Lamire does not tiptoe around, being oh so careful to say just the right thing to appease to people. She has the guts to tell it like it is. I really appreciate her expert advice and candor, as it saved me from making terrible mistakes. Thank you so much for putting Yorkies first, above all else, when you embarked upon this excellent guide.

I would have given this book 5 stars were it not for all the "doom and gloom" sidebars about the numerous horrible things that happened to various Yorkies--usually at the hand of their owners. I am researching this breed in the hopes of buying a puppy and I found this book very intimidating and discouraging at times due to all these gloomy references. Having talked to many Yorkie owners/breeders, I don't get the impression that these dogs are as fragile and picky as portrayed in this book. Negatives aside, this book seems to outline very clearly the most important details and caveats that really set the Yorkies apart from other breeds. For that, I am thankful.

Best thing going.

Like other folks who have been "yorked", I buy every thing I can get my hands on about yorkies. I think this is the best of them. It is the most practical and inclusive. I like the cautionary aspect of this book; too many gloss over the fact that these are tiny dogs and with that goes some degree of delicacy. This is the one book I give friends who get yorkies. I highly recommend it.

THIS BOOK IS THE ONLY BOOK I HAVE EVER READ THAT CAPTURES THE TRUE CHARACTER OF THE YORKIE. BESIDES BEING PACKED WITH PRACTICAL INFORMATION, IT REALLY GETS INTO THE MIND SET OF THIS MARVELOUS LITTLE DOG. I HAVE OFTEN WONDERED IF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE SEEN WHAT I HAVE SEEN WITH THESE LITTLE WONDERS, NOW I KNOW THAT THEY HAVE.
THE LITTLE STORIES ENCLOSED ARE EXPERIENCES WE, AS OWNERS OF A YORKIE, HAVE ALL GONE THROUGH AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. THEY MAY MAKE YOU CRY, BUT THEY REMIND YOU OF ONE OF YOUR "BABIES".
AFTER WRITING THIS REVIEW I AM IMMEDIATELY GOING ON TO ORDER THREE MORE COPIES FOR THREE OF MY FRIENDS. IN MY OPINION I COULDN'T GIVE THEM A BETTER GIFT.

I love the "coffe table book" style of this book.....I also love that it covers ALL of the bull breeds and focuses on them as pets in RESPONSIBLE homes. Yes, some of the images are "street" with logging chains around the dog's necks, but the context of the book is such that you learn to respect this noble breed and appreciate the interviews with various bulldog people. I highly reccommend this book for the bully collector. It's not your typical "table of contents", "housebreaking", "how to train your dog" book, rather it is a compilation of many different types and styles of writing, including poems, art, interviews, etc, as well as information on where to get quality bulldog items. A great read!
