I enjoyed this book and the stories of her 6 dogs. I am passing this book on to my doggie friends. Worthwhile, enjoyable read. My dogs have also taught me what matters.

What can I say about this great book? It made me laugh and cry. I read it during my lunch break at work and tears would be streaming down my face from laughter and sadness!

Ann Pregosin discusses her life with dogs. She got her dogs through breeders, which isn't so popular in today's world where rescuing pets from animal shelters is considered more acceptable. But Ms. Pregosin is so knowledgable about dogs that when she explains why she chose the dogs she did and how she found them, it really doesn't matter where she got her beloved dogs from.

The book is full of great stories, as well as tons of information about training, breeds, and dogs in general. You don't have to be a dog lover to like this book. Anyone who loves animals should pick up this book right away!

Beautiful Book, Stunning Photography of Dogs

This is a beautiful book with very adorable photos of many different dog breeds. I found myself falling in love with dozens of the cute and cuddly breeds and even some of the types of dogs I'd never have thought I would be drawn to. Rachel Hale is a fabulous photographer who really captures the essence of the pups. What a great book!

A wonderful coffee-table giftbook highly recommended for dog lovers everywhere

Dogs: 101 Adorable Breeds is a photographic showcase for dog breed lovers. Each two-page spread features a striking, professional-quality photograph of a breed of dog on one page, and a brief amount of text concerning the breed's history, disposition, and appearance. Dogs: 101 Adorable Breeds is not a comprehensive guide to caring for one's pet, but rather a brilliantly assembled tribute to man's best friend in all his beautiful glory. A wonderful coffee-table giftbook highly recommended for dog lovers everywhere.

I bought this book and donated it as a birthday book at the elementary school I work at. The librarian has been reading it to the classes that come in for library. I have gotten so many hugs and THANK YOUS from the kids at school. They have all said it is a "Great Book" or "Awesome Book". They were doing a unit on the iditarod races and sled dogs, so I checked with the librarian to see if the library had this book and if they would be interested in it for the library.

Wonderful!

Not your ordinary book on Yorkies. Lots of information on health, diseases, giving your own dog a physical, and my favorite was first aid and assembling a great first aid kit for home and travel.

Great book. A must -have for any new Yorky Owners

This is by far one of the greatest accounts of bomber pilot missions and ultimate capture I have ever read. It gives a good account of what these men and their families experienced during this terrible time of war.

A superb contribution to WWII military studies & histories.

A Dying Breed: The Courage Of The Mighty Eight Air Force is the story of a World War II air combat crew's courage and spirit during the two years they spent flying hazardous combat missions and surviving when so many of their comrades did not. The ten men comprising the crew of a B-17 (part of the 384th Bomb group of the Eighth Air Force), compiled a record of having shot down more German aircraft during a single mission than any other American aircraft, bomber or fighter in the European theater. It's also the story of John "Doc" Honeycutt, the bomber crew's engineer and top turret gunner and his fellow crew members who, on their seventeenth and final mission, had to ditch over enemy territory, were captured, and then sent to the infamous Stalag 17B where they spent 16 months in captivity. A Dying Breed is the story of ordinary American young men who served their country in time of war -- and served it well.

Full of interesting information!

Review Date: 2003-05-10
Ms. Dohner has written a well-researched book on a topic that has begun to catch the attention of many -- historic (and now rare) breeds of livestock. In the past, people dug up roots and bulbs from the old family homestead and transplanted them to new locations. They could go to grandpa and get some of those "dominicker" chickens that his daddy started with.

For many, the homestead and the dominickers are gone now, just like the items the Smithsonian that were once part of every day life. But for some, like the author, "dominickers" and other historic livestock are still a part of life on the farm.

Perhaps that is why Jan Dohner has been able to write a very readable book, giving the reader the profiles and histories of over 200 breeds of poultry and other livestock (goats, sheep, swine, cattle, horses, other equines)and even accounts of their original domestication along with their current status. The illustrations only add to the text.

If you are interested in agriculture or farmsteading, if you have been thinking about becoming involved in small farm livestock, poultry raising, or rare breeds conservation, I recommend this book. Or if you are interested in these endeavors and cannot find the book in your local library, ask your librarian "Why not?" Maybe the local library needs a donation!

Wondrous source book

An eyeopening look at the diversity of livestock we may lose if we're not careful. Looking for stock that has survived the test of time, but has been left behind in the handful of homogenized varieties beloved by big farming? This is the book for you! This book is a must have for recreation and historical groups throughout the states, and I firmly recommend it.

Loved This Very Nice Encyclopedia of Cats!

I found this to be a very comprehensive, very interesting book on cats. I was engrossed for an hour and a half before I looked up from this book. Luckily, I had my cat with me to make me pet him every once in awhile, just to prove I was alive. I learned alot about cats and enjoyed this book also. I will use it in my classroom as my students love nonfiction books to peruse through and enjoy. They come from other countries and often have had experiences with cats in their countries they enjoy sharing. Recommended.

I appreciated the beautiful pictures & illustrations not only of the different breeds, but pictures of cats in their environments & their displays of behaviors. The information on the anatomy of a cat has been very useful in my caring for two cats that I have adopted. It's a perfect compliment to another publication on cats that I recently purchased. The encyclopedia has been very useful in helping me raise my cats.

I purchased this book while we were considering getting a labrador retriever puppy and researching the breed. "The Everything Labrador Retriever Book" has been a terrific resource with information about the breed, where to get your dog, what to look for, how to prepare for the dog, bringing the puppy/dog home, how to keep your dog healthy and happy, basic training tips, etc. Topics are easy to find and read. We've literally used this book every step of the way... in researching breeders, bringing our puppy home, and finding answers to last minute questions as they come up.

My only complaint about the book would be that the suggested questions for breeders are located at the very end of the book... I would think these would be included with the "how to choose a breeder" section earlier in the book. Also, leash training was one of the very first "needs" for us once we brought our pup (6 months when we got him) home, yet the book did not discuss this much. I was able to find leash training tips online, but was disappointed not to find it in the book.

Overall, the book does not contain EVERYTHING you could ever want/need to know, but it comes pretty close. It's definitely a great resource for the novice labrador retriever owner, but may be a bit redundant for those who are more experienced. I definitely recommend this book.

It really does tell you everything

When it says the everything, it does tell you everything. It even has mini tips on facts, alerts and even questions that you may have on a lab. People that want to learn and care, I would highly reccomend this book.

priceless little book

I bought this book because I am a big fan of Turid Rugaas and it is on her recommended reading list. I had purchased and watched a Twazer seminar video with Abrantes, in which he is obviously very knowledgeable but too showman for my taste. This book makes some really important and original points, that I didn't find in other great books on canine evolution(i.e. Coppinger's Dogs) about dominance theories. Abrantes suggests that some dogs are innately more dominant,(just born that way, without being anthromorphic) and others less, while still refuiting the outdated classical dominance theories. Abrantes scientifically explains why this innate difference is useful and necessary in dog/wolf evolution.I have studied this argument alot and a light bulb went off and did some serious reflecting. There are some other pearls. I highly recommend.

Book of high scientific quality

This little book is a must for everybody who are seriously interested in ethology and especially canine behavior. Most of the social behaviors are described with examples from the wild canids, but it indeed also gives us a better understanding of the instinctual behaviors our domestic dogs show. Even though it is of high scientific quality, it is not too difficult to read and can also be read and enjoyed by regular dog owners.
