Wonderful book. Takes you through the beginnings of the breed and how it came to North America. Detailed information about standard physical expectations for show; personality traits of the breed; price ranges; how to pick a breeder--questions to ask; how to pick a kitten; important care instructions--physical and emotional; ..... lots of great stuff for the new Aby owner as well as those who have owned cats and/or Abys in the past. Beautiful photos! Great reading! A bit pricey, but worth the money.

People should read books like this BEFORE selecting kitty!

I recommend that anyone considering being owned by an Abyssinian read this book (the info is enlightening for already owned people as well). It covers in easily understood language everything one should know about Abyssinian Cats and how to care for them. It is simply enough written to be understood by children though not boring to adults. It could be used as a teaching tool for children in the home where kitty will live. The author starts at the beginning: How to buy the cat, acclimation, caring for it "Forever After," etc. She discusses controversial issues such as declawing (I'm personally opposed), grooming, showing, etc. The general care information would apply to most cats. But Abyssinians are very intelligent, loyal, inquisitive and active. If you want a cat that will NOT sit on the refrigerator, then perhaps this book would give the reader some understanding of the personality of the Abyssinian and guide the propsective cat owner toward making a good decision about whether or not to select this particular breed or another, less active, breed. Plenty of good photos.

As a new "Affen" person this is a wonderful resource to track pedigres. It was a Christmas gift and I cant imagine being without it! It is spendy, but I can imagine the work that went into publishing this work.

A wonderfully explicit book. I can track the ancestors of my dogs and see exactly what their performace records have been. It's invaluable. I hope they will provide upgrades.

This is exactly the book I was looking for as someone with a brand new St. Bernard puppy. The history helps to know how the St. Bernard developed its temperment and size. The care and training sections are excellent, giving everything from diet suggestions to tips and cautions in training, housing, and playing with your puppy. Although I will probably never have a show dog, I also appreciated those sections that explained what breeders are striving to achieve with the St. Bernard with size, coloring, and build.

i have been breeding saints for several years now, and this is a very good resource book...some of the information is not practical(like make him tripe to eat); but you are able to infer and obtain basic information....saint bernards are the most loveable dogs in the world, if possible everyone should have one!!

Anatolian Shepherds are big and beautiful, an unusual breed rarely seen. I have been interested in having an Anatolian companion for several years and recommend this book highly as it gives a clear look at the dog's unique personality and the somewhat different training needed by the breed.

This 30 year old book is a wealth of information about the Arabian horse, its history around the world and the struggle to keep it pure. The author in this book has shown the pilgrimage of the Arabian horse from preBiblical times to the spread to England and around the world. It is well illustrated and there are many photos of old foundation horses. A lovely, historical book for anyone, and especially for those Arabian Horse lovers who want to learn more about this wonderful breed's history.

A Heartwarming remembrance and tribute to Barney.

Review Date: 2004-09-14
If you lived in Central Indiana from the mid-90s to 2003 you probably saw Barney - Dick Wolfsie's canine sidekick and faithful companion for literally thousands of segments of the WISH-TV morning show. He wasn't a prop or a gag (he was too poorly trained for that) - he was his own man (!) on the show. He was goodwill ambassador and class clown and all beagle.

This is a light-hearted book - full of Wolfsie's wonderful memories - the good and the bad. Really, it's a fluff piece - but this piece of fluff caused my eyes to tear up more than once as he spoke of the day his beloved Barney died and the immediate outpouring of love and concern that central Indiana expressed.

Truly a wonderful little book - be prepared to laugh (my wife and I read parts of it to each other and enjoyed it all the more) but also have the tissues handy!

Indiana, WISH-TV 8 and Barney; something truly Hoosier.

For those of us that grew up watching WISH-TV in the mornings, noon, evening and late night, we never can get enough. When you say WISH-TV, you think of two things: Mike Ahern and Barney. Two legends that will hardly be forgotten. For this book, it reminds of Barney, and all of the times we watched him on television and growing up with him as well. It explains his days of eating the world whole, which he did often, his love for children, and the man that could never love him enough, Dick Wolfsie. Reading this book gives you such a frog in your throat, you wish Barney never passed and that your children and grandchildren could see Barney forever. But we knew it had to happen, we just did not want to think it. While the rest of the country thinks of a purple dinosaur when you say Barney, we think of a dog, a friend that felt like he was our own, and this book reminded you of that fact. He was not only Mr. Wolfsie's best friend, but ours too. We thank you for the book Dick, and will greatly miss 'our' best friend. Thanks for the memories.

Curly Tailed Yodelers
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-17
Basenjis are exotic African dogs, long hailed as the Barkless Dogs of Africa. The basenji has a long history - they were the loved and doted upon dogs of the ancient Egyptian noble gentry. Basenjis are a part of Egyptian art - basenjis were featured in paintings; people had basenji shaped footstools and Anubis, the God of the Underworld had a basenji head. (Egyptologists maintain Anubis had a jackal head as a jackal was a scavanger. In looking at the drawings of Anubis, he does indeed have the head of a basenji).

These beautiful dogs with the double curl in their tails are indeed distinctive - they laugh, cry and make a yodeling sound. Females come into season once every year. Basenjis don't shed or smell and they clean themselves the way cats do. These exotic dogs move gracefully and are known for their loyalty to their owners. Readers will come away with a wealth of information about this exotic dog and the breeding standards and care these curly tailed dogs require.

Basenjis are special dogs

Basenjis are indeed special dogs. We got ours as a 'rescue' from a family that didn't understand her or train her well. She was two years old when we got her and it did take a lot of patience and understanding but she is now an amazing dog full of love and loyalty. I wish we had had this book in the beginning but it has provided some helpful insight even after we finally got her trained. This is not a dog for someone who expects immediate obedience! She is almost cat like in her grooming manners and independence. Graceful when she runs, spastic when she plays. She tosses her toys in the air and her food bowl if she wants more food. Extremely smart, she knows what you are saying and listens when she wants to. Now that I know these dogs, I would have another when the time comes.

As the owner of a beagle, I naturally loved this book. I enjoyed the photographs of the beautiful hounds and I felt this book did a good job of reaching a younger audience. The author clearly loves this winsome little hound and to her credit, treats beagles and beagle owners with respect. I think this is a nice intro book for anyone seriously interested in owning a beagle.
