Since this book has already been reviewed, I just want to say this is a great book! I couldn't put it down. Connie Hall's Ranger Wynne Sperling is a great character that you'll just love. I'm sensitive to the mistreatment of animals, and put off reading this book because some authors get too detailed, but Mrs. Hall treated the subject of poaching with just the right amount of tact to make this an enjoyable read for everyone. This is a definite keeper.

fabulous romantic suspense thriller

In the Lower Zambezi National Park, Africa, Zambian Wildlife Authority Ranger Wynne Sperling has diligently worked to shut down a major poaching operation. Former US Navy SEAL Jack MacKay says he is a businessman in Africa to enjoy a safari hosted by Hellstrom Tours. Sparks fly when they meet, but not due to an attraction as they have a martial arts encounter. Though Hellstrom has a reputation as a philanthropist, she suspects his company is killing the animals to sell as meat. She does not trust the Texan.

Perhaps it was how well she held her own in their fight, but Jack is shocked that he so desperately desires Wynne that he is thinking of corrupting his mission because he wants her to see him as one of the good guys. However, he holds his heart and libido in check as he continues his undercover work, but knows that if his beloved ranger becomes endangered to hell with the mission, a feeling this dedicated individual has never felt before. She to her chagrin feels feminine for the first time and wants to believe he is not a poacher, but holds back judgment in him.

RARE BREED is a fabulous romantic suspense thriller staring two dedicated protagonists who want to do the right thing, which means ignoring their attraction for one another. The story line is action-packed and quite exciting yet makes the case that the right and wrong of poaching is not just black and white as people risk their lives to feed their families. Interestingly the star of this excellent drama is Zambia and its people who are lovingly intertwined into this quality plot making the tale must reading.

Connie Hall's experience as a historical romance writer shines through in her plotting used in this book. We have two men who are interested in the American game warden- a suave, urbane Englishman who runs a safari/ hunting lodge and is big on the local preservation board but hides a dark criminal secret, and a hunky big old good ole boy Texan who seems to be kinda shady but is an ex-Navy seal and she can't figure out. The Englishman becomes more and more menacing and scary as his true nature is revealed and her attraction to the mystery man grows more heated - much to her consternation.
I loved this book! Exciting action, detailed descriptions of the African wildlife gave the book a wonderful sense of place. Books set in Africa is a personal hobby of mine- I collect vintage romances and novels set in Africa this one goes into my collection to keep!

One note and recommendation- if you like to read about different places, the vintage late 1970s Harlequin series books in the Mystique line have some fascinating suspense novels set all over the world- including Africa and Lebanon when Beirut was know as the Paris of the middle east. Written by British and French authors the settings include much of thier countries' previous empires as settings.

As a longtime friend and admirer of Peggy Koehler, I am delighted that her book is written in a conversational style that breeders and pet owners alike can understand.
Peggy groomed us as pet owners back in the seventies, and we were fortunate enough, through her influence, to have been owned by many gorgeous and sweet Siberians. The clarity and straight-to-the-point text, mixed with dollops of humor is just like Peggy. The book is a tribute to the breed and to Peggy's memory.

Expertly written by sled dog racer and Siberian Husky breeder Margaret A. Koehler (who has earned Best of Breed at a national speciality and the internationally famous Westminster Kennel Club), The Siberian Husky: Live The Adventure is a very highly recommended informational and instructional guide to everything anyone would want to know about the faithful and hardy Siberian Husky -- a canine best known for its tenacity in the sled harness, but which is also quite widespread as a beloved and popular personal and family canine companion. Black-and-white photographs nicely illustrate this detailed account focused upon caring for, breeding, and training these majestic and loyal animals.

This was one of the sweetest, funniest books I have ever read! I could not put it down. I couldn't wait to read about Max's next adventure. I laughed so hard at some of his hijinks, I literally had tears in my eyes! A must read for all animal lovers or just people in need of a good laugh! A fantastic summer read!

This book is Great! I am an animal lover at heart and hate the thought of any creature being mistreated and I love that the author is so passionate about the rescue of dogs, particularly greyhounds. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all about the hijinks of Max and I learned a TON about greys! I didn't know they slept a lot either! Great read, hysyterical, and very informative from an author with a big heart. Highly recommended to anyone who can appreciate the sense of humor our pets have. :)

There are few men in North America who know as much about the German Shepherd than Fred Lanting. He shares with the reader his amazing breadth of experience and in most lucid, engaging and elegant prose touches upon virtually all the issues connected with the world's most popular breed. From the genetic origins and evolution of the standard to the health concerns and breeding tips, "Total GSD" has it all. Together with Susan Barwig's "GSD Encyclopedia" and Malcolm Willis' "German Shepherd Dog: a genetic history", it is an absolute "must have" item for any serious GSD fancier.

Review Date: 1997-04-07
The perfect book for either the beginning or established German Shepherd Dog owner, THE TOTAL GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG covers its subject "totally". Lanting educates his readers on the GSD from its beginnings in the 1880s through modern bloodlines in both Germany and the U.S. Covering such topics as how to get a healthy GSD puppy, read a German pedigree, whelp a litter, get into agility or obedience and more; the book contains more useful information than most others and is not as intimidating as Willis' THE GERMAN SHEPHERD: A GENETIC HISTORY (also an excellent book).

If you are going to buy a book on the German Shepherd Dog, BUY THIS ONE! You won't regret it

I have to confess: I have never understood the appeal of hunting. I love dogs, though, and believe that they should be put to work for their own peace of mind. In any case, this book was beautifully written and made me truly understand why somebody would want to hunt. That's saying a lot. Other titles that people who read and enjoy this book might like: the Gerald Hammond "John Cunningham mysteries" and Dan O'Brien's Equinox. Altogether an excellent book about a man, the dogs, and the sport he loves.

It's guaranteed to put a tear in your eye and a smile on your face- especially if you have lived with and hunted a lab. Our family has owned labs for many years and I and my dogs have traveled the country in pursuit of upland game, as well as ducks and geese. There can't be a better book about the companionship of a good dog. I just wish that it were available in hard cover so that I could give it to my friends.

This book is excellent-not only are the portraits of our canine fellows top-notch, the writing is insightful, informative, and compassionate-providing a truly unique veiw on the lives of these "working dogs" and the profound impact their services have on all of our lives, whether we are aware of them or not (for example, the mine-detection dogs). And there are the dogs that entertain us as well (circus dogs, broadway stars and 'supermodels'). Dogs are an integral part of American culture, and this book is a wonderful look at them (and us). Packed with pictures, this book is more than your average coffee table book and makes an excellent gift for dog-owners and animal lovers alike. Also a great book to share with children-the facts of these dogs lives are every bit as interesting and compelling as fiction.

This Book is GREAT! It is loaded with dogs. Chock full. I like to browse a book and this one takes hours just for the first pass. Not only are the pictures endearing, subtle, and insightful, but the text is a pure treat. I have literally laughed out loud (Sparky the guard dog) - been moved almost to tears (Nadia the seizure alert dog) - and have been simply awestruck (William Wegmen's Batty the super model). I have learned things about dogs that I absolutely did not know before.

Dog lover or not - this book is a must!
