My breeder put me onto this book and I have found that it is one of the best books on all schnauzers. It is very informative about the history and standards of schnauzers. I would recommend this book to all owners of schnauzers.

The most comprehensive book on the Schnauzer.

Gallant combines experience, statistics, and photography to complete a book that gives a wealth of information on the three breeds of Schnauzers. Anyone who wants to truly know about the Schnauzer SHOULD read this book.

This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in Schnauzers. Mr. Gallant has been a breeder for over 25 years in the Netherlands and currently in South Africa. Excellent information regarding temperament, grooming, training and pedigrees. The section on the Giant Schnauzer is comprehensive and accurate. I recommend this book to all who purchase a Schnauzer.

This is the first book about schnauzers that I've ever read that combines European and American schnauzers in one book. There are lots of pictures of both US champions and European champions. Mr. Gallant also writes very well about temperment. I really recommend this book to every one who considers getting a schnauzer.

I would rate this as an excellent book on golden retrievers. The thing that sets it apart from other breed books is it covers more then just conformation dogs. Field dogs, hunt test, obedience dogs and physical assistance dogs are given equal consideration. I use this as a guide and photo reference to many of the great dogs in the breed. There is ONE problem with this book. When I lend it to someone, I have a devil of a time getting it back.

Out of the 10+ books I currently have on GR's this is BY FAR the best one. The pictures are incredible along with all the wonderful chapters discussing the many facets of the GR. Incredibly well written and designed. This is one book you will want to keep forever as a reference book and as a collectors edition. It also makes a super coffee table book, a birthday present, a Christmas gift, etc.

I tend to go overboard when buying books on my favorite breed and have bought and read almost all the books listed here. This is my favorite of them all. It lists the great kennels in every aspect of the Golden community and has tons of pictures of specific individual dogs. This book will not leave my library. It has lots of information and great pictures. The price is high but it is worth spending the $.

Yellowpup, by Debra Marlin, is a classic book of photographs with an outstanding, emotional and tender story to accompany earlier work, Yellowdog. True story as told by the photographer, one of America's foremost artists and, many believe--writers. Currently out of print. Any available copies should be snapped up due to classic nature of photos and text.

A Golden Love

Having just met Debra Marlin this weekend in Carmel, I was introduced to a colorful, warm, person who photographs and paints with love. She took the time to open her shop so that I could buy a print with hopes of a painting in the near future. We too, have a golden retriever and it was wonderful sharing the passion we each have for them. "River" was in the studio and greeted each person who came in, ("Lake" was napping in the back of the studio) with a happy smile that is shown in her paintings. It is an artist and photographer like Debra Marlin, that I would definately return to purchase one of her paintings. She will return to Martha's Vineyard soon and with her busy schedule not be able to come to Carmel as often.(someone else will manage her shop) Somehow I know that no matter where or how hectic life might be, Debra will always take the opportunity to talk to you about the joy that her retrievers have brought her. She captures that in the beautiful colors of her paintings. I would encourage anyone and you don't have to be a "golden lover" to check out her paintings. You can feel the passion in her work! Debra anad "River" have a special place in my heart. :-) By the way, I bought "Joy" and that it is!!

First,I must admit that it took an extreme amount of courage to complete my review. The flood of tears and my own experiences took me back in another time and place with my own Golden retriever dog, Cody who has been deceased since February 3, 1998. As you might suspect, I am still not over his death.

Debra Marlin's Golden retriever, Sonny was so very much like Cody. Read and enjoy this wonderful book that Debra Martin has given to the breed. Although it was an emotional journey for me I still give Debra and Sonny 5 BIG Stars!

I enjoyed Debra's first volume, YellowDog, but like many, found it to be a highly emotional journey flipping through the pages. YellowPup, on the other hand, is a thoroughly upbeat collection of images and thoughts attesting to her love of these incredible canine creatures. She has captured the very essence of a dog's innocence, loyalty, dedication and fun-loving nature in a format rarely seen, black & white photography.

I love this little book, it captures the true heart of the Jack Russell in pictures. When I first picked up this book and browsed through it , I just smiled and giggled, then I saw one photo and realized that my Jack's are the fashion victims in this book, we met the photog at a show a few years back. I may be predjudiced but its adorable.

This is a fine comprehensive guide to Border Terriers. The author is English, appropriate for writing about a breed that is far more popular in the U.K. than in the U.S. Anyone thinking about acquiring one of these dogs as a pet should take the time to thoroughly read this book as it presents both the enormous rewards as well as the requirements for having a successful experience as the owner of a Border. Every aspect is covered, including the importance of stimulation for a breed that will happily curl up at your feet as long as there is some time in the day devoted to giving both physical and mental exercise to these intelligent and independent dogs. We liked the look of the Border Terrier on a dog show, read this book, found a breeder, and six years later, our Molly is a delightful part of our family.

This book is well written, and includes every aspet of Border Terrier Ownership. Vertie doesn't recomend borders to everyone (witch I have seen many books do) and she puts a major emphisis on not buying any dog on whim. There is also interesting facts and stories about the breed. Did you know that Border Terriers where James Herriot's favorite breed? This is an exelent book that I would recomend to anyone who has or wants anything to do with this breed!

Discriptive, humane, and logical ways to train your dog.
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-14
This book is a book for anyone who wants a great, loving dog, that is well trained. It explained how to teach your dog the easiest of tasks, like the sit, come, stay, and many more. One option this book had that many other dog training books don't have is a complete chapter on what to play with your dog, and an advanced training section. If you want a dog, that is reliable, good, and intelligent this book is great to read. I did find some of the ways to train your dog physcological, but in the end, it made a ton of sense, and made you think, "Why didn't I think of that?" The illistrations also made it even more understanding, because they showed you what the book ment if you didn't quite understand a segment. Truly, this book is an excellent book.

This book is excellent in teaching you how to train your dog in a loving manner that earns the respect of the dog. It is one that you can read and say; that is easy enough, I can do that! This book explains not only what to do but why you need to do it that way, helping you understand the way your dog thinks and therefore, how to teach your dog in a way that he can understand what you are asking of him. After ordering one book for myself, I am back to order more of this title to send home with the pups I have to be sold soon. I feel I can really insure a better chance for a happy new life for these pups by sending this book home with each new owner!

naughty Dalmatian!
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-01
Who would think that Elvira, Mistress of the Dark would write a children's book that you'd want to have in your home? Not me! But this book is awesome! That's right - Cassandra Peterson, one of the co-authors, is better known as Elvira.

Co-author John Paragon has a pet Dalmatian named Andy, who was no doubt the driving force of inspiration for this hilarious book of few words, but non-stop laughs.

Cathy Pavia's illustrations are to die for! Andy's expressions are priceless and if you've ever had a dog be naughty, you will understand everything that is going on.

Andy's owner is going out to the grocery store and tells Andy to watch the house - but there is a naughty glint in Andy's eye. After the door shuts, Andy runs to the window to make sure the coast is clear, leaving a big nose smear on the glass.

Andy has a brief "Risky Business" moment as he rifles through his master's dresser and dons his briefs and shades and slides into the livingroom. Andy gets into the garbage, smokes a cigar, pukes on the rug, has a female poodle come over to play and generally wreaks havok in the house.

When he hears his daddy coming home, he has to clean up - and quick. If only real dogs cleaned the house!

As Andy tears up his home - we can see photos of dogs, especially one of Andy on Santa's lap. We see statues of dogs, an Andy Warhol print on the wall (one would guess Andy is named after the artist - his hair is the same color, anyway!) and other clear homage to life with dogs.

Life with dogs can be so rewarding and life with a Dalmatian is not for the faint of heart - but not without its own set of rewards. The authors clearly appreciate the fun spirit of dogs more than they disdain their naughty antics. A hoot for children and adults.

I know that doesn't sound very erudite, but it's true.

Stacy Lloyd's illustrations of her friend Jupiter are extremely eye-catching and fun. I, for one, am looking forward to the comic strip that one of the syndicates would pick up in a hurry. This book is definitely worth a look

Jupiter's prose offer insight into the canine mind. Theres not a dog owner among us who won't laugh knowingly at these poems, and illustrations from the dogs point of view. Also- a writing dog... what a great idea!

It would make a terric gift for anyone who has a pet. It's one of those books that makes you smile, even if you've had a bad day. A friend told me about it and I'm glad I bought TWO. I'm anxious to see other books from this author; I love her sense of humor. I expect to see Bark Softly in stores all over; it should be there now. Great little book. I recommend it to every one!!!!!

A Delightful and Suspenseful Cozy Mystery

Review Date: 2008-04-30
A must-read book for lovers of mysteries and animal companions, Beguiling Bundle, which is second in the series of Genna Colt and Sky Mysteries, had me sitting on the edge of my seat as the danger surrounding our intrepid heroine intensified. Would Genna come out of this alive?

As usual, her Uncle Kevin Andrews, Richmond police detective, attempts to protect the strong-willed animal lover while struggling to stay on a diet. In the meanwhile, Genna's work as an aerospace engineer under contract to NASA and her preoccupation with local Papillion dog shows collide. I loved learning how both NASA and dog shows operate behind-the-scenes.

In Amorous Accident: A Dog's Eye View of Murder, the first book in the Genna Colt and Sky Mystery Series, we get an insider's view into the birth and care of championship-stock puppies. But her love of the furry beasts extends also to a rescue who has been traumatized by the murder in a pharmaceutical research facility.

In Beguiling Bundle, we see Genna's devoted care extend to a poorly nourished Papillion rescue (she's lost her beautiful fur) who gives birth to a cleft-palate deformed puppy--a real beguiling bundle that everyone rallies around to save.

Let's face it. Although I love the suspence, the adventure and the behind-the scenes glimpses in Keating's mysteries, what I love the most in her books is the love that seeps through the pages for Genna's furry butteryfly-eared side-kicks . . . and all of our beloved companion animals.

I guess I'm not the only one who loves Keating's books. She just received one of the most prestigious dog-writer's awards--the Oscar of the dog books--the Arthur Frederick Jones National Award for Excellence as the best book of 2007.

Curious about dog shows?

I really loved this book! Aside from the story line, that keeps you interested until the very end, Ms. Keating takes the reader through the world of dog shows -- something that has always interested me, but at the same time, intimidated me.

I have been a dog lover all of my life and owned several purebreds, but never ventured into the world of dog shows -- unless you count the 4-H dog show at the county fairgrounds when I was 13 years old. Gunny, the same dog my parents adopted when I was 5 years old, took 2nd place. We won a 25# bag of Houn' Dawg dog food. Oh...did I mention there were only 2 entrants?

If you love dogs; if you love a good murder mystery; if you are curious about dog shows but don't understand how (or why) they work -- then this book is for you!

Bequiling Bundle won a national award, the Arthur Frederick Jones award for Excellence as the best book of 2007. The award was presented at Sardi's in Manhattan by the Alliance for Purebred Dog Writers the Sunday before Westminster by the Vice President of AKC and is named for the long time Editor of the Akc Gazette. Puff the Papillon to whom the book is dedicated has such a swelled head about the win that the deerstalker hat of his Sherlock Bones outfil has become a bit snug. CH Astra's Designated Driver, whose picture graces the cover, says the win is due to his beautiful face. The author is not excited at all. She always hangs from the ceiling by her fingernails.
