Saint Bernards from the Stoan Perspective explains in language anyone can understand what those of us that aren't breeders and long time Saint Bernard owners need to know. It has helped me see what I need to look at when I buy my next saint. Breed standards aren't the easiest to interpret until you understand the terms. It's all spelled out in here.

Excellent reference book on the St. Bernard breed.

Sex Kittens: Single Cats Seeking Same

This is a must for cat lovers. I have never had so much fun reading a book. The dialogue is witty and clever, with related photographs of cats doing what they do best, making us laugh. I had to order my own copy, and I consider it money well spent.

The pictures really caught my eye in this conveniently sized hilarious photo book of kittens & cats. The quips that accompany each picture made me laugh out loud in the store, and I was quickly showing my friends and family favorite pictures and phrases. I definitely plan to buy a couple of these as xmas presents this year, as for $10 and under in cost for a hardcover book, it makes for a great gift for anyone who likes cats or just funny pictures with funnier captions.

I am 37 years old and this is probably my favorite book. I show Breyer model horses and so I am always looking for good breed assignments outside of the Breed assigned by the Breyer company. It is colorful, full of useful facts (color , origin etc) as well as having common and extremely rare breeds as well.

All & all a wonderful book ~~ Renee

Re: Hardback version. It is really a shame that the hardback version is out of print. This is an outstanding reference guide for anyone whose life has anything to do with horses. It is a handy size (small) accurate photos, very detailed informaton on all breeds from many areas of the world. A terrific resource for all. I own it and wanted to give copies of the hardback edition to others for gifts.

One of the things I love about this dog book is the clear personality and temperament profiles of the different Spaniels. For example, the author tells the reader about the Welsh Springer Spaniel: "Totally loyal to their person, Welshies will follow their owners from room to room, overseeing household chores or listening halfheartedly to telephone conversations." The author continues: "Many are inclined to accompany their owners into the bathroom, often leaning protectively on the shower door or poking their heads past the shower curtain."
The author also describes the different Spaniels' energy levels and she gives amusing anecdotes of their playful antics.
I wish the photographs were bigger, since I enjoy them so much.
For dog lovers there are never enough good photographs and heart-warming anecdotes in these dog books, the more, the merrier!

Wow, this book was a Godsend! With my kids clamoring for a puppy and my total lack of knowledge about breeds, this book gave me much useful information leading towards our decision to go with a field spaniel with its laidback, easy-going nature. I found the breed comparison charts really helpful -- they brought up useful considerations I wouldn't have factored in ordinarily. My kids loved the many color pictures.

I've hunted with Plotts for a couple years in Illinois on raccoon. They are some of the most loyal, intelligent coon dogs a person could ever ask for.

Bob's book is written by someone who not only spent years researching the subject, but he also loves these hounds very much and has Plotts of his own.

If you hunt Plotts, you hunts game with hounds, or you have an interest in learning more in an interesting way, this is for you. One of the best reads I've had in a long, long time.

Fascinating story, brilliantly told.

I purchased the book on a whim, just for the fact that I'm from North Carolina and had heard my parents and grandparents talk about the Plott hound throughout my childhood. I never knew the full story of the breed. Once I read the history of this fine animal, I became even more aware of the importance that it holds in not only North Carolina history but also why so many sportsmen and animal lovers covet the Plott hound. Reading this book also gave me a greater insight into my own ancestors love of this dog. In a unique way, this book brought back so many good memories of my relatives who are no longer here to share the stories themselves. I just want to commend Mr. Plott for producing such a fine telling of what truly is one of the world's underappreciated treasures, the Plott hound.

Strike & Stay is without doubt the best history of the wonderful Plott hound that exists. As a North Carolina native, the Plott Hound's having been chosen as the "State Dog" piqued my interest years ago. Now, enlightened by picture-rich Strike & Stay, my interest has only increased. This excellent narrative traces the dog's history from the Black Forest of Germany in 1750 to modern-day recognition as one of the finest dog breeds in the U.S.A, and the world. It is a story engagingly told by the great, great, great grandson of Johannes Plott, whose family first developed the bear-hunting breed for German barons. Sixteen year-old Johannes Plott's 1750 migration to America, his devotion to breeding the finest, most loyal hunting dog in the world, and his descendents' unwavering continuation of that devotion, is a great story for dog lovers, history buffs, hunters and non-hunters. Bob Plott is to be commended for this outstanding work!

What a wonderful humorous book! The book takes you along the road with a few show dogs that are making their way to Westminster 2001. As you read you get to know the trials and worries of the dogs and mostly their owners and handlers. I was actually cheering for a few dogs especially Shower, Fanny and J.R.!

Besides the wonderful stories of the dogs you also get a scoop on the crazy world of dog shows in general. I even learned a few tidbits along the way i.e. the Westminster Kennel Club is only for men who are generally wealthy and white.

If you want an interesting read about dogs and dog shows then this is the book for you.

Interesting, well-paced examination of the dog show world, spotlighting the best-known show in the US. I liked the author's focus on several "top dogs" from the 2001 show -- I really got involved in their stories, and appreciated the updates at the end (love Henry the Field Spaniel!).

The book is basic enough to explain the intricacies of showing to novices, yet manages to still be interesting to those involved in showing. I recommend this book highly -- hope this author writes more on the subject!

Deborah Wood's *Top Dogs* is a great read for anyone who has ever been intrigued by the mystique of Westminster...experienced dog person or interested channel surfer...I came to love the dogs, owners and handlers whose journey to Westminster Wood chronicles, because she deftly captures the soul of each one.

Wood obviously LOVES and knows dogs and respects the tradition of Westminster...but her keen, and often iconoclastic, humor also gives us a knowing and warm wink at the eccentric, passionate world of dog shows.

She's the one you want to go to the Garden with...she's funny, wise and generous.

Review Date: 2008-05-26
This beautiful reference book on cat care and the world's cat breeds makes a lovely coffee table book. It has over 700 photos of cats. It's printed on semi-glossy, flexible and thick paperstock.

The book is separated into two parts. Part One is "Caring for your Cat" and it starts with history of the cat. Then it goes on to many topics that any cat owner should be aware of. A few of the topics covered in part one are: Creating the right enviroment, selecting the right cat, care at home & away, nutrition & feeding, grooming, behavior, health and injuries & ailments of cats.

In part two, "The Breeds", there's a complete pictorial encyclopedia of all the main cat breeds. Each breed and the breed's many color combinations are fully described. It also has information on any important characteristics, such as temperment, grooming needs and average sizes. Non-pedigreed cats are also covered on a limited basis.

This full color, British authored book would make a great guidebook for any new cat owner. It would also make a lovely gift for a cat lover.

Quite informative guide for any cat owner

What makes this book useful is the plethora of information it gives on cats as well as the way it is organized. The encyclopedia is quite thorough in detailing not only the various subjects of cats, but types of cats and other areas concerning care and behavior.

There are many topics covered. One of the first main sections focuses on what a person should look for and know ahead of time before choosing a cat for adoption. It gives some tips on what to look for in a healthy cat, and how to care for a sick cat, as well as how to maintain a healthy lifestyle for your pet. This section is followed by advice on how to create the right environment for your cat: how you can help your cat "settle" into its new home, what to do if it does not adjust well, access to litter boxes, toys for cats, etc. This is followed by a section on how to care for cats home and away. If you happen to be leaving town for a time, there are some helpful bits of advice on how to make it less stressful on your feline friends. Explored in this section are such things on dangers to cats within the home and outside and ideas about access to the outside, such as how often you should let your cat out. There is also a section on nutrition and feeding, which goes over how much and what you should feed your cat based on its age or weight. Perhaps the biggest section is the one which goes over the many types of cats--these are broken into shorthair and longhair. There are many pictures of the various types, as well as information on their personalities and temperaments. The final section is about sickness and diseases, from minor to serious, and how to go about treating each one.

What I found most helpful about the book is the broad range of topics about cats. You can think of a common question about your cat, and it is probably answered in this book. There are tons of pictures of cats and their many predicaments included in the book, but this isn't just a "pretty" encyclopedia meant to grab you with its big, cute pictures. There is a ton of information for someone who has never had a cat, and information for someone who has grown up with cats all their life. The cat novice and the cat veteran will probably agree this is an excellent book! A must for any cat lover!

The best book ever written about Golden Retrievers!!!
This lady is a real professional. She employs world class specialists from both sides of Atlantic. It is the "must read" book especially for Americans. There are a lot of beautiful pictures and this is a great help for people to see how the Golden Retriever should look like. I just hope this book will get translated into other languages too. In the last 20 years this fabulous breed has spread incredibly in many countries even not covered in this book. In this case this book is a little behind but this cannot be hold against the book. This is a nature of all the books. Additionally one has to wait till changes will have more permanent character. I am sure that in the next edition of this book the author will try to update this. I just hope that all my clients will read this book prior to a puppy buying decision. This would save me a lot of time and it will set them on the right track. This would be better for the breed, for the dog owners and ultimately best for their dogs. What else can I say - I love Goldens and I love this book!

This book is absolutely fabulous -- you can't get a better book about Goldens. For the beginner, it has all the information in there about how to housebreak him and when to take him to the vet, but it also has the Golden only type stuff, like how to teach puppies not to be afraid to swim. But it is really best for the expert, because there are so many photos of great Goldens and so many placed next to each other -- a British next to an American -- to show the differences in type. This is a really big book with tons of photos and easy to read and really tells you everytthing you need to know. It is interesting to see how the two coutnries diverged in their idea of what the structure should be. It was written by half British writers and half American and oh boy what that committee must have been like!

For those of us who share their lives with God's most nearly perfect earthly creation, i.e., Labrador Retrievers, a book like this is sure to elicit a smile of recognition and an acute sense of recollection. For contained within these pages are a plethora of familiar dog photos, snapshots of moments cpatured forever both on film and in our hearts. I have enjoyed the company of Labradors for over two decades now, and must admit that very often it seems my life centers around my relationship to the four dogs who share my house and my life.

So, for someone like me, this humorous little book from Ed Camelli and Mike Singer is the perfect gift, its bevy of color photos and amusing text making it a great picture book for coffee table or kitchen counter. Herein Labs are caught in the midst of everyday activities--in mid-air with Frisbees, in pursuit of thrown balls, smooching faces, and engaging in their beloved water sports. I once heard a Labrador described (accurately) as a creature who would stray five miles out of its way just to jump with boundless enthusiasm into an overgrown mud puddle. Labs simply adore water, and I have even been surprised in the shower by Labrador puppies who could resist the call of the wet and wild!

Camelli's photos seem to consistently catch the Labs at key moments whether they be rolling in the grass or cuddling with a playful kitten. Likewise, Singer's text threads a consistent amsuing yet memorable message through the pages, one that amplifies and reinforces the photos. Indeed, what does one say in words to describe the heady experience portrayed in a photo of a Lab in virtual ecstasy while getting his ears, which he describes as a "Lab loving a Vulcan mind-meld." This is a lovely little book, and one any dog lover will truly enjoy!
