How cats are made is a mysterious process. Of course, to be astonishingly mysterious is one of the 201 instructions for cats in this delightful little book by Leigh Rutledge. These are the instructions which every cat should know, and every cat person should realise. Some are conventional cat wisdom (which, ironically, is often the least understood or apparent). Others are inventive and new.

Sometimes the instructions come in three's:

+ Stay out of the rain
+ Stay out of the snow
+ Stay out of the clothes dryer

and

+ Be bold.
+ Be winsome.
+ Be wildly tender.

From the start to the finish, this book is a cute, tender, touching collection of aphorisms, ostensibly intended for cats (but they really don't seem to need this kind of instruction), but really for human beings who live with and around cats to both better understand the cats, and better understand themselves. There is implicit wisdom in some of the things that cats do, and some wisdom for us to follow:

+ Chase, but don't hurt, butterflies.
+ No matter how old you are, never be afraid to express the kitten within you.
+ Remember that foxes, skunks, and owls usually have the last word in any confrontation.

How could I not fall in love with a book authored by a man with 28 cats (and people thought my four or five were excessive!) who is said to rescue them from storm sewers, interstate highways (my cat Silver came from such a place) and other such harrowing places?

The sayings are memorable and true; the graphics are adorable and fun. This book makes a good gift for a friend, and a good treat for oneself, almost as good as catnip for human beings!

My Cats Didn't Write This Book But I KNOW They've Read It!

I could add instruction number 202..."always try to lay across the keyboard when someone is typing, if that doesn't work, attack the ankles under the desk." This is a cat's book of proper feline ettiquette. It is funny and will make you smile when you recognize your own cats within its pages. It's a nice compact volume, just 4" x 6", and might make a good gift the next time your cat incessantly bangs on the bedroom door after you and your partner have discreetly closed it for privacy's sake. This book shows that there's an art to being a cat, but it's a spiritual calling to be a cat lover.

A delightful little book!

This book features a mother cat's words of advice to her kittens as they venture into the world. It's humorous, but if you have cats, you'll recognize a lot of the behaviors. I'm sure that my cats must have read this book... :-)

Highly recommended by Hal, age 12 and Toby, a kitten. Words of wisdom for intelligent felines. Warning: Do not share this book with your owner. Our owner got hold of it and now she knows our secrets. P.S. She says it's the best cat book she's ever read.

This is an excellent book on the breed! Do not waste your money on any of the big company books that offer multiple breed titles, they have very limited information. If you are truly interested in learning about the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, this is the book for you!

If you can only buy one, this is the ONE!!

This is a wonderful and informative book. It is chock full of pictures of collies as early as the first known collie in the USA right through some of the more recent and important collies we know today. You will find advice on how to pick a collie puppy, and how to get it registered with AKC. There is information about common collie health problems as well as advice on how to train your collie. It really is the collie owners handbook.

It took me close to 3 years to track down this book. I finally got it, read it and by the way, enjoyed it. It contains basics (to me anyway) about colour inheritance, structure, history, health, and a little on grooming and showing. This book will stay in my kennel's bookshelf for a long time. (And no, I'm not a year old.)

I have owned this book since it came out new....wish I'd bought two - one to read...one to save. My copy is so beaten up that it is a shame...but I actually have read it cover to cover thirty or more times. I read and re-read this one again and again. It is a great reference book, too. If you need to know it....it is here.

I bought this book under the advise of other collie breeders some time ago. It was told to me that it was the bible of the Collie World. I have found that not only was that true but more.
Not only did it help with breeding but raising as well. This is a must for anyone getting into Collies for any reason. I give this 10X more stars then whats offered. You'll love it.

Comprehensive Care for Man's Best Friend

When most parents expect their babies, the more reponsible ones reach out for information, be that in books, magazines or from their own parents. The reality is you want to learn as much as you can to be prepared to be the best parent you can be.

Our family adopted a labrador from a rescue foundation. With the coordination of a wonderful rescue foundation (Southern California Labrador Retriever Rescue) we were matched with a perfect labrador for our family.

This was my first dog. I have always had cats, so I knew I needed to quickly educate myself. I was fortunate to come across this book sponsored by Iams and found it to be highly informative. The book features the more popular breeds of dogs which I found very handy because dog owners attract dog owners, and your interest begins to expand with each new owner/dog you meet. It was helpful to understand which breeds are compatible with each other and how to introduce your dog to social situations.

I needed basic dog obediance guidelines to back up my classes with our dog, and I found their informtion to be very applicable. Not only did the book review nutrition and basic health care requirements, it provided information for grooming, exercise and a general overview of the responsibilities one must assume with ownership of these animals.

I realize it doesn't take a rocket scientist to state the obvious when it comes to raising and owning a dog, but when you present the above information with beautiful illustrations and practical advice, you serve to make the experience so much more positive for both dog and owner.

If you are getting a dachshund or thinking about getting a dachshund.......this is a must have! As the author admits this is not an all inclusive how to train your dog book. But, it does touch on training and specific to dachshunds. They can be a quirky breed (of course that only makes that more lovable!). Those quirks are covered well in this book. Potty issues are always something to contend with when you own a dachshund, but the book touches on how to deal with that. Other training books are generic and not specific. The care for a dachshund is a little different due to their structure.......this is also covered in the book. Other than all that......the pictures are just gorgeous!!!!!! You can't turn a page without each dachshund touching your heart. This also would make a wonderful present for any dachshund lover. The book is informative and entertaining!

This is a very well written and laid out book, with many color photographs, by an author who is obviously a Dax devotee, personally interested in the breed's welfare. In it you will find everything you would want to know about that cute, short, long clown of a dog in your life - your Dax; from puppyhood to old age, it will teach you how to care for your dog, how to train it, and how to keep it healthy. Definitely highly recommended!

I purchased French Bulldogs: Lightweights Littermates and Dachshunds: Lightweights Littermates together, as gifts... I flipped through them prior to sending them off to their final recipient and was pleased to find that the photography and composition was appealing to my tastes. Sharon Montrose's composition skill is what sets these photos out from the rest. I like the bold imagery. And having tried to take pictures of my own pets, I know it's a VERY tough experience to have them pose... they're curious little creatures. My 1-star off of the review is pretty much for repetitiveness; the concept is fresh to begin with, but it gets boring, real fast.

you must get a dachshund after this!

I have always loved dachshunds and owned a couple. It is a race you can get addicted on: loads of personality and energy and the funny shape - despite which they are really highly mobile and athletic and strong and brave - and cleverness that can baffle humans. I found this book by accident, opened it - of course - and adored it. There are litters of dachshund puppies, mostly 4-5 weeks old, together and then on individual portraits, each of the puppies on a scale, their name and weight written on the page. And that's all. The scales are of different types and puppies come in smooth- and long-haired variations and several colours, all of them are cute and clearly have their own personality already. Just watch these coy, mischievous, sulking, endearing faces and their round little bums, short legs and long ears! You need to get a living dachshund puppy after these pictures - but watch out: I can tell you from personal experience that a 2-month-old dachshund puppy can wear down two young, healthy, highly fit retrievers and still bounce around yapping "What are you lying there for? I just got started!! Get up and play!!!"

SOOOO CUTE!!!

Dog Driver by Miki and Julie Collins is a book all who have ever wanted to drive a team, who are driving a team, or who have drove a team should have. It has something for everyone.

While considered a 'beginners bible' it has much to offer the established dog driver. Any dog drivers who feel that they dont need it are the ones who do need it.

The Collins Twins are probably the two best known dog mushers in Alaska who arenot on one of the competitive racing circuits, they are known for their competence and ability in getting a dog team from point A to point B . This book is a distillation of their experiences in a wide range of situations, and they have presented it in a clear and straight-forward manner.

They cover the topics in a thorough and effective manner, from getting started to trekking and racing. If sled dogs are your interest, you will want this book.
