Whether you're a fan of pugs or not, this book is a crowd pleaser. The lovely black and white photographs are hilariously staged, with Wilson's expressively wrinkly face adding adorable character to every shot. The writing is simplistic enough to be enjoyed by a reader of any age, but still has moments of poignancy ("War is bad for pugs and other living things"). Real taoists can get a laugh out of looking at their religion from a dog's perspective, and everyone else can just admire the clever ideas and charming Wilson!

Totally Charming if you love Pugs

I'm a Pug fan, so I'll admit bias. The book is on my media room/bar coffee table and our guests have often been delighted with some of the opinions expressed by Wilson.

It's just a fun book.

I loved this book, and received it as a gift. I wish I could get my pugs to pose like that for pictures, how does she do it? I have purchased this book for other pug friends of mine, and they have simply adored it. I highly suggest this book as a gift to a pug person.

The Tao of Pug has great snapshots of pugs, and comically done by "Wilson the Pug", Nancy Levine's pug. 'Black and white isn't so bad', I always think to myself, looking at the pug photos. 'I believe it's just a nice, warm, way of showing pugs off.' The Tao of Pug will always be a family favorite!

Great book especially for novices! It gave you enough information to prepare for the birth, understand and know what to anticipate. We had 2 books handy while our chi gave birth to 6 puppies! Puppy birth is very similar to human birth in alot of ways. So, if you've been through child birth whether it's yourself or a loved one, the main thing is to remain calm and be there for your dog. They will appreciate you for it!

This book was of great help, particularly when our pups began to dehydrate after birth. There were only 2 things it did not prepare us for, having smaller than normal litters and the mother's nervous behavior affecting her care of such a small litter. According to the emergency vet on holiday call, there are breed specific behaviors which play into the mother's care and can interfere. My only wish was that I could have found a book more specific to my breed. As a general instruction manual, it was of great help. The two little pups are dear and are doing well now, 2 weeks later.

We just had a litter and everything went great. There are nine healthy pups. We had to do the slinging thing with one pup, and with the illustrations and directions it worked and the pup is healthy. We didn't loose one!!!

Telling the story from the dog's point of view of her humans and her life made for a hilarious read. Once you pick up this book you won't put it down until you reach the end. Definitely a book that you can read more than once!

GREAT BOOK. I'm a papillon owner and a friend gave me a copy of "Genevieve's" book. I laughed till my sides ached. I read it in one
evening and then read it again. I've watched my papillons "zoom" around
the house and act just like Genevieve. I've purchased several copies to give to friends as gifts.

This book was given to me by my sister. As a working mom to three papillons and foster mom for rescues, my reading time is limited. However, this book was so humorous that I just couldn't put it down. I could see my oldest pap agreeing with Genevieve many times while I read the book. I would pick out passages in the book and read them to my husband, and he would say "that is just like them".

Genevieve is a spunky little girl that doesn't take life for granted and sees humor in everything. Denny, her human translator, helps her put her thoughts into wording that anybody can understand.

This book is great.

With this book (and a prayer) I have clipped my first standard poodle and she looks terrific! I followed the directions for the specified clip (Miami) and all went very well. It may not be a perfect job, but she looks darned good. I'll do her brother tomorrow!

This is a great book on breeds. Although, I believe that
the ASPCA's Complete Guide to Dogs was much more helpful in
my research on the breeds. Even though Legacy of the Dog has
200 breeds, I believe the ASPCA's Complete Guide to Dogs tells
you more of how the breed acts, and the amount of exercise the dog needs and energy they have, while the Legacy of Dogs seems to more tell you where the breed comes from and how they appear... It is a great book, but when compared.... It comes in second in my dog breed collection.

The author rescues a beautiful golden retriever on advice from his doctor to get a dog. The dog however has the ability to alert the author to impending cardiac episodes and in doing so, gives the author the freedom to work and go about his daily life. This book touches the readers soul and lets us know that maybe there is more to the human-animal bond than we know. The book also dicusses the "Americans with Disabilities Act" as it relates to service dogs. Anybody who has loved a dog will love this book.

I Absolutely LOVED this book! MY sister in law bought for my husband --animal lover...Anyway she bought it for him but I read it first because the cover called my attention. I like dogs but was reluctant to get one because I though of all the work there is involved with taking care of animals..besides with a little one, school, and work a dog would be more work for me....But after reading this book, I know I want a dog..The magic between Mike and Dakota is so overwhelming --that it made me think that that is what we need in our lives..Yea it will be work to potty train and take care of ..but then again things in life that are worth anything sometimes require alot of work--..God Bless you Mike and Dakota and thanks!!!!

One of the most touching stories of the bond between man and his dog.

I enjoyed the book so much. Felt like I was right there with them and every time the author had an attack could visualize how much his Angel/dog helped him through it. They had a bond that is so hard to explain unless you have had an animal and then know what it means, they are not dogs, they are your family and in this case especially he was not only family but his life support and friend. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone, have since bought additional copies to give to my animal lover friends for gifts.

Must-read for bird dog owners

This book was one of two recommended to me by a member of the local NAVHDA chapter. Being a bird dog novice, I had contacted them for advice on how to condition my German Shorthaired Pointer for possible field work. It reads very well and makes a lot of sense, even if you are new to hunting breeds and the lingo of hunting sports. It emphasizes the importance of "conditioning" (as opposed to actual "training" which comes later) the puppy and young dog for its future job, and describes very clearly how to go about it. It also gives advice on what NOT to do to prevent having to retrain the dog later on.

Regardless of whether or not you want to hunt with your dog, I recommend this to anyone who is getting a gundog puppy. It is a lot of fun to strengthen your pup's instincts in a gentle way, and fascinating to watch your dog grow mentally before your very eyes.

Writen for the average dog owner who would like to hunt their dog. Concise and full of easy to implement tips and strategies, this is the book for thsoe of us who don't live in wide open spaces and have untold hours to dedicate to the new pup. The title is more than just a sales pitch, the author actually tells you how to let the pup train himself for the most part. Excellent reference for the newbie.

This book is great for in-experienced first time bird dog owners. Especially if you have a puppy. I have a little lab and I noticed she would follow turkey scents and chase them in our yard ( I moved to TN). I knew she had that instinct and has now become my "bird dog". But, I had no idea where to start in how to train her. I looked on the web but only found partial information. This book puts it together for me nicely and even has a little informal schedule on where your dog should be (depending on how ready she/he is.) After a year, the author recommends a second book if you need to fine tune your bird dog.

I am currently training her in sections, i.e. she comes to the whistle blowing and has put it together with retrieving. And I am so proud of her. We make a game of it and have a good time!

I really enjoyed Ms. Bailey's approach to training gun dogs, especially the emphasis that she places on conditioning instead of formal training. Ms. Bailey's conditioning techniques allow you to train your dog without the dog realizing it. Her book and its methods are only intended for puppies to 1 year old dogs. She defers you to other books and techniques to use for training your adult dog. However, I feel that if you use the techniques she has stated in her book with your puppy/adolescent dog, you will be well on your way to having not only a great bird dog, but also a great family friend that is well mannered and socialized.

A fantastic book! The photos in this book require one to pause, meditate and really examine the heart and soul of the greyhound. Barbara Karant's love of the breed, coupled with her sensitive photography exemplify the true greyhound devotee's spirit-that of making the world a better place for greyhounds. Too, in the spirit of the book, is making the greyhound an important factor in the betterment of the world. Can one really do this by photographs in a book? Barbara has! For anyone interested in the breed, capturing the essence of an animal or learning to love the heart of a dog, this book is for you.

As a greyhound parent, I own just about every book related to this gorgeous breed. However, this is the first book that I own that captures just in photos, the gentle, beautiful nature of the breed. Don't let the simple cover fool you . . . inside is photo after gorgeous photo of greyhounds at their best. Barbara has captured the gentle, quiet spirit of the greyhound. From the expressive faces of each dog, to the focused shots on their bodies, people scanning this book will get a true sense of just how beautiful this breed is, and perhaps see that these dogs have distinct personalities too, not just athletic prowess. If only I could keep this book open to every page on display. It's a must have for greyhound parents, but also for those who can simply appreciate beautiful canine photos.

Puppy mills are terrible and I support any book that shows the true horror of these operations. However, I had a hard time thinking about all of money this author wasted flying all over the country (she states some flights were donated) to take pictures of her dog with celebrities, when that money could have been donated to a shelter for food and vet care for the real victims of puppy mills. She pats herself on the back over and over again for rescuing this puppy mill dog (1st time she rescued a dog, previous pets were purchased), but she even flew across the country to pick up this particular dog - when I'm sure there are thousands of unwanted dogs in her own hometown. I just don't like how she comes across as some sort of animal advocate, when all she did was write a book.

This book sucked me right in. I am so happy someone has finally stepped up to the plate about puppy mills. Jana Kohl did an amazing job telling people the truth about puppy mills and pleaded with anyone getting a dog to save one and NOT to buy from a store or from a breeder. Although there are responsible breeders many are not and she asks people to become aware and to ask questions, visit and demand to see where their puppies live. I was touched by many of the stories. It was a wonderful book to read and to share. Once you read it you will want to pass it on to others to enjoy the book and hopefully get the word out! Thanks Jana for doing a great job!!!!!

This is a wonderful book. I don't usually read books about things like puppy mills because it is too painful. But this book, although it deals with the tragic suffering of animals in puppy mills, was written in such a way that love and compassion come through too. The author took Baby to visit with famous people and politicians around the country to get their support to end the horrendous abuse Baby suffered and many other dogs suffer all day every day of their lives in puppy mills. The overwhelming support she received is a testament of humanity at its finest. And it's impossible not to fall in love with Baby!

I own a sheep operation with over 100 ewes. I always recommend this book to new producers when they purchase sheep from me. Storey's Guide to Raising Sheep covers all the basic information: breeds, feeding, shelter requirements, diseases, care for lambs and adults, even what to do with the wool from your sheep. I use it for a ready reference, and I have been known to GIVE a copy to new shepherds. There are chapters on fencing, livestock guardian dogs, pasture management, and herding dogs. There is even a section covering products and marketing. This book is thorough, yet easily understood even by a novice. If you want to raise sheep, read this book first so you'll be prepared to bring your first ones home.

Review Date: 2008-03-15
When I started out with sheep in 1991, an earlier edition of this book was one of only two books I could find on sheep raising. It was called "Raising Sheep the Modern Way" and of the two books, this was the most useful. It had a comprehensive guide to breeds of sheep which helped me pick which breed to get, it had useful plans for sheep feeders and such, and a helpful section on sheep guardian dogs. (I'm still trying to get my dog to read that part.)
This was the book I ran in to the house to consult when I had a sick sheep or when a ewe was in labor with a lamb coming out backwards.

But time has gone by since then. When I first saw "Storey's Guide to Raising Sheep" in my local Tractor Supply store, I wasn't sure I wanted to spend that kind of money on a book I already owned. I did it anyway, and it sure was worth it.

This book is a complete update of the former edition. It adds sheep breeds that have become important since the last edition, such as the Dorper. It includes new information without removing any of the old that made this book so important.

I must admit that I don't consult this new edition the way I did the old. I've become experienced with sheep and also have subscribed to 'Sheep!' magazine, 'Goat Rancher' and other livestock publications. But when faced with a new situation--- such as when I decided to add a second sheep breed to my Shetland flock, or when I got my guardian dog--- this book is the one I consult first.

Sheep are the most efficient and ecological way to convert grass and brush into food for humans. If you are considering raising sheep either as a homesteader or a full-scale rancher, this book should be on your shelf--- when it's not in your hands.

Impressive!

This book is a definite must for anyone thinking sheep! It seems that nothing goes missing from this read. It gives you all the info you need for basics and even emergencies. It doesn't make the negative overwhelming for those prospective shepherds out there and it adds a happy light to the joys of raising these docile animals. I was surprised and glad to see the information on rare breeds- I am leaning in that direction. A wonderful compilation that merits it name "the small-scale sheep-raiser's bible." If you are wondering in any way, shape, or form about sheep, reach for this book before any other! An enjoyable and informative book!
