An Excellent Breed Owner's Handbook

Sharon's book covers everything the GWP owner would like to know, from the basics of new puppy questions to being a resource for breeders. I especially like being able to see pictures of our breed's foundation sires and dams.

It's probably time for this book to be updated as there are several top kennels and dogs to be considered today.

This book is currently considered "the breed book." I have recommended this book to all my puppy buyers to trace their pup's ancestors, including pictures, what fun!

Great book for history of the breed worldwide

This book is a very thorough examination of the breeds history and origin. Also gives particular attention to some of the great GWP's in the past that contributed to making this the excellent dog that it is today. A good read for anyone who is familiar with the breed and interested in competing in the ring or the field with thier dog.

Excellent, from up-bringing to showing & training!

This is a great book, focusing specifically on the breed. It has information on all aspects of owning a German wire-haired pointer (and indeed a lot of information on general dog owning), from choosing a puppy through up-bringing, showing, training and working. It doesn't, however, assume that you will show or work your dog, so it is also good for people who simply want a family pet. Having bought my puppy from Sharon, I know that she is extremely knowledgeable about the breed.

Great for Pyr Owners

First of all, the author Joseph B. Gentzel, is brilliant when it comes to Pyr's. We have a signed copy of his first book and met him at the Ohio Great Pyrenees National this past May (2008). The book, being brand new, will make an excellent keepsake for many years to come. I was overwhelmed when I first met this breed (8 all came at once to receive pets), with my fiance, who was ready to take on the showring. But since March '05, when we picked up our first puppy, which was pick of the litter by a breeder in Cave Creek, AZ, I have been in love with this breed ever since. We also took home his Mama and have since purchased another show quality puppy. They are beautiful dogs to love and cherish always.

Must have book for any Great Pyrenees owner.

I was hoping to find a book that would give me information about history of the breed, it's development in the world, and who the initial breeders were to help establish the breed in North America. I also was interested in learning about health, nutrition, and grooming issues concerning the breed. This is a must have for anyone who might be interested in learning about the Great Pyrenees dog. The book was written by a long time breeder who has extensive knowledge of the breed. He has successfully produced a multitude of champions over the years. His love for the breed is evident in every word written within the pages of this book. It was easy and enjoyable to read, organized, and filled with information for the novice or for the long time breed enthusiast. I can highly recommend it!

This book is written by an expert in Great Pyrenees. He is a long time breeder and his knowledge and understanding of Great Pyrenees is unsurpassed! This is a must have for anyone who either loves or is thinking about adding a Pyr to their household! This is his second book (The Great Pyrenees, From France With Love) on the Great Pyrenees breed and I am pleased to say I have and STILL read them both! Thanks for adding important information to my library!

A good guide to owning a greyhound

This book provides helpful information and insights for owners of greyhounds as well as to those thinking about getting a greyhound. It contains first aid tips and obedience training guidelines that aren't available in most other greyhound books. It also has beautiful photos of the breed. There are only two drawbacks I have found about this book; it does not fully emphasize the need to keep greyhounds on leashes or in enclosures and the reading continuity is interrupted by the "How To" sections (not that they're not helpful but they seem misplaced).

Excellent coverage of an excellent breed

This book was recommended to me by Greyhound Friends. A concise and accurate discussion about adopting and caring for Greyhounds. Covers in detail virtually everything you need to know for your dogs entire span - even a small and touching section on dealing with the eventual loss of your pet. I read and re-read this book leading up to adopting my greyhound, Gromit, and things have gone quite well (of couse, Gromit is wonderful, even for a greyhound). A few nits: I would have liked more information about training your dog to climb stairs (Gromit figured it out in about a week with a lot of help from me). The book is very pro lure coursing (a non-gambling kind of greyhound racing); many sources on the net feel that lure coursing is very dangerous for ex-racers due to injuries the racers encounter during their careers. Still, a fine and useful book.

An Exceptional Resource

There have been several thorough resources published about adopting and caring for greyhounds with the caveat that greys are "different from other dogs". They include technical paragraphs about the physical and psychological sensitivity of these dogs, but don't give many examples about how greys differ from other dogs emotionally and psychologically. This book fills that gap, bringing a realistic and focused perspective to what it is REALLY like to have a greyhound in your house. It does this with a friendly, companionable voice rather than a clinical one, although the technical information is included as well. If you love greyhounds, you will love this book. It is obvious from the text that Coile loves her greyhounds.

I recieved this book as a Gift from a friend shortly after getting a greyhound. I found it very helpful and informative, what to look out for, what to do, what not to do, and it even gave me a head-start to finding recreational activities to participate in with my greyhound, such as lure coursing , which my greyhound will be participating in once she gets settled in.

This small picture book functions as a great resource for anyone interested in owning a lab and finding out more about the breed, or as a delightful display piece for owners and devotees of the labrador. The illustrations and photography are the focal points as you flip the pages, but it is a surprising source of valuable information. Place it on a side table and watch as guests, intending to idly scan through the pictures, end up reading it cover to cover.

I liked this book because it had many breeds I had never heard of. Susan McBane grouped the breeds into regions of the world so you can find where the horse come from. McBane also put the breeds of the horses which were breed together to form the breed. McBane gave great information about the breed and it's highlights. If you are looking for an interesting breed you have found your book.

Now I understand why the author put so much information and pictures of English Setters; he owns some. The author's love for English Setters is evident page after page after page, even in the sections 'dedicated' to Gordon Setters and Irish Setters. I cannot understand why the author would bother writing a book that included the Irish and Gordon if he seemed to have trouble fiinding good things to write about them. I was shocked to read his harsh and sometimes cruel opinion on the lovely Irish Setter.

All of the pictures are of the highest quality and are, of course, adorable. However even in the pictures, the author's love of English Setters comes through again, with almost double the amount of pictures there are of the Irish Setter.

Would I recommend this book? To an English Setter fancier - yes. To a Gordon Setter fancier - sure, if you have some extra money to toss around. To a Irish Setter fancier - Look at the pretty pictures while you browse through a bookstore then immediately put it back in the shelf.

Being a labrador retriever owner since 1997, I was toucbed at the authors depiction of the way an animal can become so much a part of an individual's life. The book spoke of the hardships of training a lab puppy, to the struggles of dealing with the loss of an old friend. Any lab owner can agree, most of the stories found in this particular book, their lab has done at one time or another. In this book a labrador is more than just a companion. Great Book! This is a kind of book you'd want to take with you to work, and read a story on your break and at lunch. The stories are short, some funny such as the one where much researching was done to buy a pup and it happened the pup picked the owner instead. Some are sad. All are real. I have a lab, and have had other dogs. I identify with all the dogs I've had with this book. If you read this book away from your dog, you'll just want to go home, hug them all and thank them for being them.

The title is all wrong: Yes, these pooches are lightweights (in the sense that they weigh so very little), but canine conisueers will find Sharon Montrose's photos weighing in with lots
of cute, captivating charm. This slim volume features color and sepia-toned portraits of puppies snapped during the first weeks of their lives ...most keeping company with vintage or antique scales ... and all of them are simply the cat's meow! There's Lola, an 8 week-old tea cup Chihuahua, weighing in at 14 ounces. There' Scooter and Lily, a 22-pound, 6-ounce snoozing Weimaraner combo whose faces might possibly send William Wegman heading for a phone book. And there's Lurch, a 14-pound, 8-ounce brindle Dane, who, even at 8 weeks, promises to grow (and quickly) into a precious gentle giant. Montrose is not only gifted behind the lens, but in front as well, since she has managed to capture the spirits and spunk of each pampered pooch.

What can one say...Some of the best photos of puppies I have seen. And, I am not just saying that because I own "Ruby" the rat terrier. (Ruby is now Angel) Sharon must have the patience of a saint because I have been trying to get Angel's sister Carly who is 4 weeks old to hold still for a nice picture since she was born and it is no easy task. All the photos are beautiful and show the best of each pup. I was amazed by the weight differences between the breeds...how can a boxer be 1 lb at 4 weeks and a rat terrier 2 and 1/2 lbs? This is a great gift book for dog lovers!!! Oh yeah, I don't have any photos of Angel at 3 weeks, so it is great to have them "published"!!!

I have owned pugs for 12 years now. They are wonderful little dogs, but they do have a personality that is not for every dog owner. This book does a great job of presenting the pros and cons of pug ownership (Pugs are loyal, fun, friendly, and great companions. They are non-aggressive and get along well with other pets and family members. However, pugs shed a lot, make really funny and sometimes loud noises, aren't a dog to take jogging, and are pretty useless as guard dogs.) The photos are stunning, the information is factual and helpful if someone is trying to decide if a pug is the dog for them.

Mary Ludington is one of those rare brilliant supernovas that one waits a lifetime to witness. In this book, it isn't just her soul-stopping photography, or her ability to assemble writers who put into words what cannot be put into words, it's what happens when they're put side-by-side. It is the unexpected alchemy of the alloy. The sum is greater than even the (great) parts. The essays and the photographs speak to the true animal lover, to the person who understands the unimpeachable heart of dogs. I have to go order another one before they're out.

I am in love with this book, and every dog in it. From the Bouvier to the Pharoah Hound, Mary Ludington captures something so special about each dog, on every page. I have bought dog picture books before, usually just for my favorite breed -- but this book is different. It offers precious insights into each dog, why they came about, and what it means to us. And if the stunning photography isn't enough, the essays are amazing. James Hillman's essay has me pondering dogs in our lives, throughout time. Temple Grandin's insights have me thinking differently about how I treat my own pet. Kevin Kling's stories had me laughing through my tears. This book belongs to every lover of dogs. Ms. Ludington's work is simply gorgeous. In the spirit of the beastiary- she looks at dogs, their noble nature, their breed history and their personalities though luscious, painterly portraiture.

This is a MUST for the sopisticated dog lover and a perfect gift for anyone who loves a dog (even if that's yourself.)
