As a new Boxer owner I searched high and low, read many articles, called the ABC and searched for information. After all of that time spent I saw this book on my friends coffee table, (Another Boxer owner) and asked to barrow it... As a true friend he said, "no, you'll need one for yourself. And I still need mine!" I figured since he has raised Boxers for years it was a MUST HAVE. Well, after reading through the book once, I had to re-read it. There was just so much info about training, Teaching, and show prospecting, to only read it once.

A real MUST HAVE for any current Boxer owner, or prospective Boxer owner. I suggest reading this book before you buy your puppy!

P.S. After reading this book I chose a real show prospect... I'll write again when he is a Ch.

Top of the line for those serious about boxers

This is a fantastic book for those that are interested in the showing, breeding, and loving this awesome breed. It is wonderful to be able to go through the standards & evaluate your own dog. Written in plain language that a novice can understand. We have benefitted greatly from this book & are finding it indispensible.

The book is well written in British english and offers comprehensive information about the breed. If you are interested in showing your Boxer, this is THE book for you! Approximately 70% of the content is in regards to preparing, rearing and showing a championship Boxer. Great pictures display a complete range of gorgeous, beautiful boxers from fawn to brindle, cropped & floppy ears, of all ages and physiques.

One of the greatest books I have ever read!

I've read three other Boxer books in the past year. Tim has added a personal touch. Lot's of information to help the first time boxer owner. The number of illustrations to help show which is a great boxer and which is not quite up to standard were a great help.

I bought this for friends of ours who recently moved to Iowa (go figure). She has let me know it's the best book on the subject. They spend lots of time in the wide open looking at cows. So I guess you can't get a better reference than that!

Sara Rath really gets deep and into her writing in this book. I enjoyed every bit about it. I thought i knew just about every thing there was to know about them being as though i was raised around them my whole life. I would recommend this book to anyone

Sara Rath's "The Complete Cow" is a gem of a book. I was amazed by the scope and in-depth coverage of cows written in friendly first person text. It 's all so readable and interesting, you just keep turning the pages for more information about these all-important and loveable beasts. The book is full of large-format color photos, side-bars, cow jokes and interesting trivia such as how to say "Moo" in eleven languages. Did you know that the age of a cow is always based on her age when she calves? Or that Texas still leads the US in beef production? Rath writes about the mythical cow in places like Egypt, Greece and Scandinavia; cow breeds of the world (Kuri, Pinzgauer and Romagnola); and the philosophy about cows. Another section I found interesting was "Holy Cow" about how the Masia tribe of Kenya andTanzania devote their lives to cattle; the importance of cattle in Irish culture; and interesting lore about the Texas Longhorn. The Complete Cow, entertaining and witty from start to finish, is a real pleasure to hold in your hands. A great gift for anyone who loves cows!

Why are cows so trendy? Why do cow calendars sell out at Christmas before their kitten and puppy counterparts? Well, the answer was a mystery to me until Sara Rath put together her incredibly well-researched account titled, THE COMPLETE COW. This book is a gas! From the truly beautifull photography -- to the hilarious "asides" on bovine history, Rath has put together a cow compendium of unrivaled proportions. A great book for animal, trivia, and history lovers alike, this book brings together Rath's fine, storied prose and a character we can't help but love.

A book my friends and guests love to pick up, over and over.

As with so many other "ordinary" things in life, I had forgotten to think about cows, and I certainly had no idea that there are so many different types. Thank goodness we have authors, like Rath, who have the ability to re-ignite the childlike wonder in us. The Complete Cow's entertaining text and stunning photos make it exactly the kind of book that my children and friends love to pick up, over and over. I'm ordering copies for my sisters for Christmas.

I am in the process of becoming a dog trainer and I have a few dog breed books that only seem to give a snippet of information.

I agree with the previous reviews that this has more information than other books and also information on some breeds I had never even heard of.

If you want to learn about dog breeds I think you could use this book and learn more than you could by reading 5 other ones.

I have owned this book for two years now and I find it is the best dog book out there. It covers the most amount of dog breeds, even the rare breeds and gives a great detailed description of each one. There are atleast two pages with pictures of each breed. Great, great book. best that's out there for the serious dog lover!

This book covers quite a bit of information than other "encyclopedia" style of books. Some just shows pretty photos...which this doesn't, but it try to show you more variants within the same breed photos. Probably a breed in different colors, at different age or sex etc.

There are detail description on the outlook, temperament, grooming requirements etc. Although its not to a lot of detail on 1 breed, it gives a more than enough introduction to dog lovers who want more than a simple overview.

I picked this book up from the stacks of "bargain books" at B&N (though it turns out I probably paid full price). I was shocked to find that this book outdoes pretty much all the other dog books we have around the house (and that's no small collection!).

The pictures are tremendous for each breed, the discussion of the breeds with which we're familiar are pretty spot-on, and the coverage of some of the more obscure dog breeds is incredible.

Don't overlook this book - it's a gem.

My fiance and I are considering getting a dachshund. Before committing ourselves financially, we wanted to know what we were getting ourselves into. We purchased this book along with Dachshunds for Dummies and I feel like both of these books gave us a great window into the lives of Doxie owners. Neither of these books are written generically so that the publisher can just insert the next breed name into the title and publish it. The information was very dachshund specific. This book is full of great info from personality quirks to grooming tips to how to show your doxie to what to look for in a vet. After reading this book, my fiance and I decided that now was not the best time to bring a dachshund into our home. We'll wait until the conditions will be ideal for both us AND the dog!! BUY THIS BOOK if you want to know about dachshunds!!!!!!

This book covers every possible aspect of owing a doxy. It spells out everything that can go wrong so that people will not buy the dog and then months later give it to the pound.

The first chapter describes the lifetime cost, $20,000, and the several hours per day of your time that is required to keep poochie healthy and happy.

It then goes into great detail on finding the proper breeder. Then taking the dog home and holding hands with it hours per day until it is happy in your house.

Socializing the dog with all sorts of people and other pets.

Preventing bad behavior.

Traveling. And on and on.

Review Date: 2008-10-16
I bought this book because I will be bringing home a pug puppy soon. While I am two weeks from picking up my beloved pug, I have found this book to be a great book, so far. I'm almost finished reading it. I'm reading it cover to cover and have already found out that I want to go back through and take notes on a few things to help with training. It lists all sorts of health information on pugs, the basic commands for training, bathing/grooming, a section for 'senior pugs' and I dont even know what else! There's so much information in this book! I almost bought multiple pug books at the same time to read and now, i'm glad i didn't. There's no need for them. This one book pretty much covers a lot of the questions i've had so far.

As someone above mentioned, it does go in depth a little more with the training aspect to train your dog to get off something by saying "off" following with "good off" - or, to only say "no!" when it's something that you dont want them to try again - as opposed to saying no when the pug gets a training command wrong. This stuff makes perfect sense to use clear words and praise so they're not confused, it's just stuff that i probably wouldn't have thought about myself. Not only these few things, but there are more like them in the book. It's just a great general book to have for a pug owner (or soon-to-be owners, like me!)

You also get to read about training and breeding your pug and overall good dog care specific to this breed. You learn what words and short commands tend to work best for pugs and you and your pug can share in the rewards - limitless pug cuddles. You even get some humorous "pug tales" as well. What is not to love about a pug? Pugs are so lovable!

Great book! Very practical information about what pugs need as far as bathing, skin fold wiping (beware of swamp face), and other general pug hygiene. Very practical training tips, such as belly rubbing to assure your pug that you are dominant (as well as providing a delightful belly rub) and choosing useful words for training, such as "off" instead of "no jumping," so that that your pug can be praised with the same word, for example, "Good Off," which then serves as a built-in reward (and doesn't exhaust the word "No"). Interesting and funny information on pug personalities. What's not to love about a pug?

This book is delightful...for those of us who are infatuated with these bristly critters, it gives all the loose-end info that the other books don't. From tail-curling descriptions to grunt analysis, this book brings home the bacon. It included pig folk sayings, poems, pig songs, pig superstitions.. and the piggy illustrations were extremely detailed and captivating, if you adore porkers! It's a fun book to page through, and is chock full of obscure piggy facts that you would never find anywhere else, such as pig trails of past times, or the four varieties of spam. I am sure that any pig lover would be perusing through it as fast as I did.

Although the author does ham it up with some of his observations, he has succeeded in fashioning a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

When a little fuzzball draws you in with his big puppy eyes, then gallops your way and leaps up to lick you in the face, the check is as good as signed. That's why I wanted to read this book BEFORE picking my next pup. As Willis points out in his book, not all fuzzballs are alike. Some are simply better equiped in temperment, health and intelligence. The book is packed with pictures and descriptions of famous German Shepherds from around the world, and provides an opportunity for dog breeders and owners to make responsible choices in selecting their own fuzzballs. Willis details the genetic faults of the breed, and even identifies which dogs tend to carry those traits, so you can study pedigrees before you make an ill-fated purchase. The only problem with the book, besides the price (which is daunting, though probably worth it considering the investment you will make in your new dog) is that Willis assumes too much knowledge of genetics in the beginning of the book. But if the reader consults a dictionary or encyclopedia at those early passages, then the rest should be fairly easy to grasp. Also, the book could use an update since more recent studs and bitches which are NOT found in this book are currently lining the pedigrees of today's fuzzballs. I've just started searching for my own fuzzball a month ago, but I already know more about the breed than 80% of the breeders I've talked to thanks to Willis's book

If you are new to the breed or old this book is a bible for breeders. Even if you are into another breed this book is very good for it covers alot that is not breed specific. There is so much information in this book one is always going back over it. No german Shepherd breeder should be without this in thier library.

Geneticist and German Shepherd breed devotee Malcolm B. Willis, Ph.D. is the acclaimed author of the definitive work, The German Shepherd Dog: A Genetic History. With his comprehensive explanations of genetic principles, Willis details the genetics of reproduction, behavior, hip dysplasia, and other inheritable diseases of the German Shepherd dog. This book is an essential addition to every breeder's library. It is also a remarkably educational resource for anybody who is committed to fully understanding the genetic history of the breed and preserving its future.

THE BEST information available to the serious breeder!

Although his earlier version (1970's version) of this book was excellent, and probably the best for it's era, this version is excellent! With up to date information from various countries around the world, this book gives a non-biased background of the genetics behind controlled breeding of Quality German Shepherd Dogs. He provides avenues for further education on any one point in his book, however, I find that all information provided by Willis is sufficient in making educated decisions in any good breeding program. A must for any serious breeder, and a book that will fast become "impossible to get". Robert Frischke KAHREN KENNELS
