This book is a must have for any one who loves Boxers. It is the most complete and informative compilation I have come across. It is so full of information, full of photos. I especially liked being able to look at photos of my dog's ancestors. Covers the breed's history in detail, lists many of the major dogs/kennels that have contributed to today's Boxer. This book took years to complete, and it shows in just how much it covers.

Rick Tomita's World of The Boxer is the BEST book I have ever read/owned, since Billie McFadden's publication! Rick's expertise is totally phenomenal & the content of this entire book is extremely comprehensive, well articulated, and offers a seasoned, as well as a potentially new Boxer owner the "MOST REALISTIC & OBJECTIVE DESCRIPTION" of this very special breed. Author Tomita is a virtual "ANGEL OF THE BOXER BREED" and his sharing of his knowledge is far beyond what any other author has done -EVER ! I have been reading books about this breed for the past 20 years, & to say that his is the best book ever to be published is an understatement!

This book does contain alot of information on cockers, especially helpful if interested in breeding or showing.
Includes grooming and training tips. Was a little disappointed though that the pictures are small and in black & white. Alot of them are demonstration or example photos and are hard to see.

MUST BUY!!!!!

This is a must get. Especially for anyone truly interested in breeding cockers for show, color, and comformation. It has an excellent chapter in breeding for coat color and genetics. The book is written well with a touch of humor from a man who has much experience with the cockers; not someone who wants to publish a book about the breed. He has many references to other reading material, as well as a very thorough history of the breed, including many pedigrees on these dogs. If you only get one book on the Cocker Spaniel--this is THE ONE to get

This book sets the standard of "compleatness" on the Bernese Mountain Dog. It is way beyond that of just a typical guidebook. Bernd Guenther has left, proverbially, no stone unturned here. The author's breadth of research, resources, insights, and details are on a level of the highest competence as to be priceless; this kind of preliminary (for the new and even seasoned owner) information cannot be overestimated.
But it's more than just an information book for breeders and owners; you are made to completely inhabit the world of this legendary, mythological breed. Guenther takes you on a delightful life-guide of several Berners, noting distinct personality traits, whimsical anecdotes, and a good deal of sharp-viewed observations. Without ever being heavy-handed, Guenther takes the reader onto a serious study of the breed. As he makes clear, this is an extraordinary dog, one that needs like considerations. No prospective Berner owner should be without this book, as the author has the kind of sagacity and knowledge that was gleaned as a true lover and connoisseur of not just his own dogs, but for the breed in general. Indeed, some of the information is not to be taken lightly, especially genetic problems, and some tough sacrifices one must potentially make. And - this is a good thing - the book will either make you say a firm "yes" or "no" when considering bringing a Berner into your life. On the one hand, this beautiful, loyal, human-like dog may have you on the phone tomorrow looking for one; on the other, the responsibilities can be made to seem overwhelming - be prepared to GIVE UP your life BB (Before Berner) as you have known it! You cannot get any dog as if you would a piece of furniture, but with Berners, there are absolutely no options: the dog has to be a total part of your family, your life. Guenther makes clear as to what adoption of a Berner entails. Freedom will be limited. Berners are not for jet travelers or workaholics. After reading Guenther's precise requirements, a prospective owner will be made to realize the exacting responsibilities involved. Berners are frighteningly intuitive creatures, and to compromise the existence of them would be sheer misery for them.

Crowning this achievement are the astonishing photos; they will literally make you gasp. Some will bring tears to your eyes. You will see why this breed is the King of Dogs: their physical magnificence is almost unreal. Perhaps the most fascinating set are of one dog, captured from the time of near birth, from every few months, and then to yearly intervals, to near the end of its life.

This is more than just a book: it is an incredible generosity of spirit. Don't even THINK of bringing a Bernese Mountain Dog into your home without it.

So much more than just a simple coffeetable book

The Bernese Mountain Dog: A Dog Of Destiny by Bernd Guenter (a member of the Dog Writers Association of America and the World Dog Press Association) is so much more than just a simple coffeetable book of wonderful photographs showcasing a specialized canine breed. The superbly presented and "user friendly" text commences with an introduction and history of the breed, then addresses the "Bernese Mountain Dog Standard". Then their are entire chapters devoted to puppyhood, the adolescent Berner, the adult Berner, showing the Berne (European Style), breeding the Berner, and health issues (including veterinarian selection, vaccinations, deworming, experternal parasites, and specific health problems affecting the breed). Enhanced with appendices for Breed Standards; Useful Addresses; Bibliography; and List of Abbreviations, The Bernese Mountain Dog is comprehensive, exceptionally well written, superbly illustrated throughout, and a "must" addition for the reading list and reference shelf for anyone who's canine companion is the Bernese mountain dog.

A MUST book for Bernese Mountain Dog Lovers

Every photograph in Bernd's book is literally a work of art. The detail in the photographs and the background scenery just takes your breath away. I especially love the photographs in "The Berner Circle of Life" on pages 134 through 141. Bernd chronicles the life of a newborn berner through his senior years. He has posed the Berner in the same stance from ages 5 weeks through 9 years. It is fascinating to see the progression from a young puppy, to a gangly teenager, to a full grown adult male who is absolutely gorgeous!!

It is not just the photographs that make this book a "must have" for every Berner person and for those who are seeking information about Berners; the text is also excellent. Bernd Guenter is from Germany and his command of the English language is absolutely amazing!! This fantastic book is full of great
information about the breed - you can tell that Bernd has lived with Berners and has been around Berners and their people for many years and from many countries. He is able to take his knowledge of Berners and turn it into a most informative and delightful book that is easy to read.

You will find yourself shaking your head in agreement, laughing at the antics of the Berners, gaining a lot of knowledge about Berners and staying up late at night to finish just one more chapter. It a book that you will treasure forever.

THANK YOU, BERND, for writing and photographing such a lovely coffee table book about our Berners!!!!!!

If you love Bouviers, you will love this book. It is worth every penny! Great history, photos, and packed all the information you need as a potential Bouvier owner or as an admirer of the breed. Pedigrees, puppy selection, grooming... it's all there. A must have if you plan to own a Bouvier. I keep mine on my bedside table... when I'm not carrying it around with me. (Yup, it's heavy.) This is the best Bouvier book I've ever found and definitely the most thorough.

If you are a Bouvier des Flandres fancier or just think that you would like to know more about the breed, buy this book! History, bloodlines, showing, training and grooming are all covered in detail. Best of all, this book does what we wish all breed books did. It gives us an HONEST picture of a noble breed without the sugar-coated praise that makes too many people buy the wrong dog. Read this book and you won't go wrong when you look into Bouviers.

As a new and first time owner of a Bouvier des Flandres puppy, I appreciated many of the details, historical, raising and breeding. The book emphasizes the Bouvier as a Schultzhund dog, which is the author's perogative. I would have appreciated more information on training of a Bouvier for a pet. Many dog owners desire a lovable pet not a champion police dog. The author is an important breeder of Bouviers and he has many valid points to keep the Bouviers to a standard. I myself researched breeders for several months as it is a problem. My summary statement is that the book is worth the money. If there is a revision, I hope the author will broaden his interests in the breed for the general dog owner.

Engle accurately portrays the breed in easy to read text.

Worthy historical record
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-24
This is a wonderful book that details the beginning history of the breed. It cumulates to the mid-1990's where it details the current happening in the breed for those few years after a registry was formed and where the breed first began to popularize across the nation. Unfortunately, the book is out of print and the printer is out of business. It is unknown but doubtful that there will be a 2nd edition of this book to update the leaps in development of the breed to the current history. Appendix is dated as of 1997; much has changed since then. Persons who submitted pictures for the book report that they are mis-labeled throughout the book. Much more is known about the breed's health needs and genetic diseases, as well as the breed's AKC parent club, the Boykin Spaniel Club & Breeders Assoc. of America, being named and the Boykin's advancement into AKC events announced in 2005. In all, this is a great book for a collector's library but not much use to a pet owner looking for current information on the breed.

The most important book to have if you own a Boykin Spaniel
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-16
This book is the current center of the Boykin Spaniel's literary universe. Mr. Creel and Mr. Kelley have done a fabulous job of writing a book that covers every facet of the Boykin Spaniel breed. The story of how the breed came to exist, the trials of survival and how the current place in Carolina society are all part of the time line and stories unfolded by these gentlemen. The history and myth of the dog is in here along with lots of wonderful stories of these little brown dogs' antics that make them such wonderful hunting partners and family pets. The political battles fought in the South Carolina State Capitol and among Boykin fanciers everywhere are all brought to life and recorded for the intrested reader. This is the singularly most helpful book for the family or individual debating if the Boykin Spaniel breed is the right breed for them. A must read for every Boykin owner, breeder,or hunter who loves these dogs.

This book is a "must read" for anyone seriously considering adopting a Boykin. It is comprehensive, describing in great detail the history and characteristics of the breed. The authors' love for these dogs is apparent, and one can not help but develop an affinity for these dogs as one becomes more familiar with them. Appendices provide helpful resources for finding breeders and additional information, and numerous pictures are provided. ( My only complaint is the occasional grammatical/spelling error that could've been omitted with better proofreading.) When a reader finishes this book, he/she will clearly understand the strengths and weaknesses of the breed and be able to make a well-informed decision whether to pursue purchasig this dog.

To be a "REAL" (responsible, with a long term contribution to a breed) is no matter of luck, or money (even though you may need some of both!). More than that, you have to study and understand what is behind selecting the right combination of broadstock and stud, cleanning up genetically based failures, and much more. Breeding Better Dogs is a easy to read book (don't need to be an expert) and the tips and methods are readly applicable. I breed American Bulldog, and, for the good of the breed, I really wish the most breeders in the breed would read it.

After a disasterous false start with the "Encyclopedia", which was simply an outdated, mediocre European book with the CFA logo sloppily applied to it, the Cat Fanciers' Association's ambitious project to present the world of pedigreed cats to the public is finally here. The sections on the different cat breeds are written by actual experts on the breeds: CFA breed council secretaries. The section on feline health, written by one of the world's foremost "cat breeder vets", Dr. Susan Little, makes this book an indispensible part of any cat lover's library. With so much dated feline health information currently on bookshelves, it is refreshing to see this section reflect the cutting edge of feline medicine. Those with cats of less prestigious heritage than the National Award Winning pedigreed cats pictured in full-color generously throughout the book will find this volume valuable for the section on feline health alone.

Congratulations, CFA, on a job well done!

This is probably the best book on Borzoi I have ever had the pleasure of reading in my 20 plus years as a breeder/show home.

This is an outstanding book for anyone interested in the Borzoi breed. Mrs. Groshan's insight into Borzoi reveals her true love of this remarkable breed. Interpretations of several standards help the novice as well as the veteran exhibitor visualize the perfect Borzoi. Histories of many kennels are included, along with many invaluable photographs.

This book is fascinating in that it discusses the differences between the breed standards of several different countries that were in existence at the time the book was published. There is also a wealth of information for the breeders in the photos and histories of Borzoi kennels in the US. If you have Borzoi, you should really have this book.
