This book was absolutely genius. I was heartbroken when I finished it, and felt like I could let it go on forever without getting tired of it. I felt like I was riding/hunting right along with this trio and couldn't get enough of the true life stories. The tales seem real and not contrived like many other writers that I've read. This book was much more than just about bird hunting but included life's crappy moments and some of the most humorous. Wonderful writer.

I don't know what this book is. Is it a novel ??? It has a travel theme, so it's not a collection of lose essays. I must admit I read it simply because he lives in my area, and the lofty title caught my attention. Regardless of the title, it's about a hard drinking, wife deserting, philosophical, obsessed bird hunter and his two Brittanys.

The author describes himself as a carpenter who bird hunts and writes a few stories. Well ... I've read what carpenters write on Porta-John walls, and this guy is no carpenter. He's not into product review because it take 3 or 4 chapters to figure out what kind of shotgun he is using. Unless I'm mistaken, it's a 16 ga. Winchester Model 21. If I had a Model 21 I would have mentioned it in the first sentence.

Whatever this book is it is a superbly written tale. Give us more.

Set amid the natural beauty of Montana and Idaho, A High, Lonesome Call: One Man, Two Bird Dogs, And The Open Road That Is Their Answer by sportswriter Robert Holthouse is a superbly written novel of searching, self-reflection, and respect for wild grandeur. Drawing upon autobiographical experience, Holthouser wonderfully captures the essence of the hunt and the bond between a man and his faithful canine companions. A thoughtful, serious, soul-deepening read.

The Jack Russell Terrier Handbook is like no other book available for the breed. The emphasis is on providing the most in-depth and up-to-date informaton about subjects vital to caring for and living with a JRT, including behavior problems and training, medicine and hereditary health problems, nutrition, genetics, and breeding. Information on fun stuff to do with your terrier, such as training for earthdog competitions or even going hunting, is also included, as are tamer diversions such as agility, racing, and conformation. This is not a book of pedigrees and show-win photos, but a book for people who enjoy the JRT in every facet of its being. Intersperced in the text are lots of color photos of JRTs in action, and tidbits of technical information (Terrier Tech) and facts (Jack Fact). A book for people who want to excel at JRT ownership.

I picked up this book while waiting in my doctor's office and immediately ordered a copy for myself. Denver Bryan is an outstanding photographer and depicts this beautiful breed in all possible scenarios, beginning from puppyhood to old age. I was smiling, laughing, and crying, all at the same time. The text, by E. Donnall Thomas Jr., describes these wonderful dogs, their antics, personalities, and the unconditional love they show for their owners. This one's a keeper!!

I've spent hours looking at pictures made by Denver Bryan and reading the words of E. Donnall Thomas Jr. ... This book and "Labs Afield" are 2 of the best photography books on Labradors I have found so far ... What can I say ... I don't like hunting but I think Labradors are wonderful ... and the collaboration between photographer & writer celebrates the breed in quite an exceptional way ... If hunting photographs don't disturb you, then this wonderful book will help anyone understand how special it is to have a Labrador as friend and companion ...

Beautiful Coffee-Table Book About Labrador Retrievers

Review Date: 2004-08-03
Starting, as this book does, with the all too believable notion that the Labrador Retriever is perhaps the single most agreeable and people-oriented creature this side of Paradise, the author shows the reader how and why to care for God's most perfect earthly creature, the Labrador Retriever! He entices us into the earthly domain of the heavenly Labs with a torrent of photos that show them in all their splendor and glory, and reading this book is such an utter enjoyment it is easy to overlook the valuable information it also provides.

For example, by showing us the degree to which the breed represents a witch's brew of intelligence, honesty and loyalty to its human companions, the author illustrates why the Labrador has become the single most popular breed of dog in the world today. Labradors are sturdy creatures indeed, bred for sporting use along the quicksilver shores of Newfoundland, where the water temperatures and sea conditions require a healthy dollop of strength and endurance, and those are qualities these dogs have in spades.

For any of us that have seen them at work or play in the fields and in the water, their unique combination of physical attributes and obvious intelligence makes them the ideal human companion. I should know; I live with four of them! The proof of their adaptability to almost any condition and their loyalty, intelligence, and unparalleled work ethic is demonstrated by the wide use of them as guide dogs and as adjunct partners for the physically handicapped. Stories of Labradors crawling out onto the ice to save their masters are legendary, as are the tales of them rescuing children from fires or from underneath rubble. Never has there been a dog superior to them.

The author has testifed as to the qualities and abilities of the dog, and one walks away from a reading of the book much better informed as to the all of the many qualities and capabilities of the breed, which seems to represent an astonishing list of useful and worthwhile attributes. We also get quite critical information as to what to look for when choosing a lab, and how to analyze the quality of the puppy you see before you. The author offers information regarding genetics, feeding, health care, and inherited dispositions, as well as some sage advice as to how to ensure your puppy becomes the grown up Labrador companion you will come to view as another family member. This is a great book, and one I heartily recommend! Enjoy!

The best book on Labs that I've seen......

the Memory of Gaia
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-25
Mokole is a wonderful book detailing the werecrocodiles and weredragons of the World of Darkness. The writing is superb, truly bringing to life the Mokole, and portraying what it is like to posess a racial memory back to the time of the dinosaurs. The feel of incredible antiquity, the weight of ages of Memory and wisdom, keenly permeates this Breedbook. This book does not merely describe the Mokole and their culture, it builds a vivid atmosphere, describing these ancient relics of a distant golden age, and does an excellent job of immersing the reader in their very unique worldview.

The book focuses most on the Australian Aboriginal culture of the Gumagan tribe, although it also describes the other tribes and their cultures. I hardly know anything about Aboriginal culture, but it looks like the authors of Mokole did a good job of respectfully including it in the book without the dreadfulness of Rage Across Australia, and I am glad to see Australia covered in another W:tA book.

The Mokole are an amazing race, and I am eager to play them someday. Their war-form, the Archid, is a dinosaur or dragon, and it is customizable and completely different for each character. The Mokole have all unique totems, rites, gifts, and fetishes, including ghostly totems from extinct species. Although they posess immense physical power - they are weredragons! - they are truly focused on peaceful functions. The are very different in feel and function from the Garou, and should provide many new opportunites for players and STs. Although the Mokole are usually antagonistic toward werewolves, they can work with Garou in the Hengeyokai and the Ahadi, and the book's metaplot provides possibilities for inter-Breed interaction outside of these coalitions.

Every Breedbook includes the Breed's version of the history of the world and their part in it, but the Mokole's story of history spans 200 million years! The Mokole can remember a previous Apocalypse that wiped out the dinosaurs and an earlier intelligent race, the Lizard Kings, and they know of even earlier Apocalypses that came before that one. They believe that Gaia will survive the current crisis. Mokole revolutionizes the history of the World of Darkness. Even among Changing-Breeds, they take an extremely long view, and their insights and stories are interesting to say the least! The Mokole recall the Wars of Rage like they were yesterday, and their tales describe three entire Changing-Breeds that are now exinct. There are even basic rules for constructing games set in the Mesozoic, mostly intended for stories contained in a modern character's Memory.

Finally, although the Mokole are weredinosaurs and speak frankly about evolution and geological Eras, the entire feel of the book is still as fully mystical as the rest of Werewolf, without drifting into genetics or other Weaverish explanations.

The one major problem is the end of the fictional story. The resolution of the story's conflict makes no sense and is silly. Except for that, this is a totally awesome book!

Mokole is a book for an addition to werewolf the apocalypse. You must have the "werewolf: the apocalypse" book in order to use this one to it's fullest ability. Mokole is a book about and how to play a were-alligator, were-crocodile, were-moniter lizards, were-gila monsters, were-caiman, and most importantly... they are all were-dragons! The mokole gives you mnesis, an ability to remember back to the time of the dinosaur kings. If you want to look like a big lizard, godzilla, dinosaur, sea serpent, fire breathing dragon, or oriental dragon.. then this is a book for you. The werewolves are the warriors of gaia, the mokole are her memory.

Out of all the kin books for the Wherewolf The Apocalypse game i like this one the most. It gave the much needed variety in the game and allowed for a great game. Allowing characters with these new and interesting powers is great fun, and by adding new sources and titles to your WW library you can laugh and have more fun with your friends that you play with.
I suggest this book to everyone and hope you take my word on it.
great great fun.

Gaia's Memory

Review Date: 2004-05-02
This book is everything you need to play the Mokole, were-reptiles who remember (and embody) Gaia's past, the days of the Dragon Kings (dinosaurs). As naturally, the book opens with a comic adventure telling of the Garou Peter Ward's quest to Australia to meet with the Mokole themselves and learn of his heritage. The book then gives the typical introduction, lexicon of terms and an explanation of what it is to embody the dragons, dinosaurs and sea serpents of the past through your Rage. From there it goes on to a great history, telling of the Mokole's creation and the reptilian civilizations of prehistoric times. The Mokole can even remember previous Apocalypses (like the one that destroyed the dinosaurs) and fully expect to live through this one. Details on the Wars of Rage and the War of Shame are given, along with lost Fera (were-bulls, boars and bats) known only to the Mokole. In addition, brief mention is made of human times, like ancient Egypt, the Slave Trade and so forth ("western" history doesn't really matter, since most Mokole come from the tropics).

The next chapter covers the four Streams (tribes) of the Mokole: the Gumagan of Australia who share ties to the Dreamtime, the Makara priest-kings of India and neighboring lands, the primordial Mokole-Mbembe of Africa, the American Southeast and the Amazon and the scholarly Zhong Lung of East Asia's Hengeyokai. Specifics are given for each (like how the Gumagan have strong ties to the Umbra, differences in Mnesis and how the Zhong Long and Makara follow different auspices). Views on other Fera, vampires and even stranger factions (like mummies, voodooists, tribal shaman and Egyptian magi) are given, along with details on names and Duties (the Mokole Litany). The next chapter gives the crunchy bits, covering the Mokole solar auspices, new Traits, forms (not all are crocodiles or alligators; gila monsters, Komodo dragons and gharials are also represented) and Crinos traits (their Crinos form consists of various traits borrowed from other reptiles, like horns, armor, wings, frills, venom and so forth). Details on Totems are also given, along with new Totems, Fetishes and Merits/Flaws. All of these fit right in, from the reptile Totems to Fetishes drawn from Aboriginal culture.

The next chapter covers Gifts for the Mokole, including general Gifts, solar/seasonal auspice Gifts and Stream Gifts, many of which are quite interesting. A number of useful (and uniquely Mokole) Rites are also presented. In the following chapter, we are given a look at useful information on Mokole breeding, Mnesis (their racial memory), the "Innocents" (ghosts of dead metis), camps and relationships with the Nagah (were-snakes). We also get the standard templates, like the Native Rights guerilla and the rainforest ethnobotanist, and NPCs, including Uncle Monday (a centuries old Florida Conjure Doctor), Sister Rae (who has True Faith in the sun), Morwangu (who was involved in the story in the book) and Braney (a Wyrm corrupted children's show host). The book closes out nicely with details on RL crocodilians, monitors and gila monsters, the hatred for vampires (particularly Setites), Mnesis spirits, the Dragon Kings, prehistoric birds and marsupials that once served as Mokole kin, and stories set in the final days or the War of Rage.

The end also includes the typical template for creating and running Mokole characters. This can be used just as easily for western Mokole as it can for the eastern Makara/Zhong Lung (who follow slightly different creation rules). Needless to say, this book blew me away. The Mokole are probably my favorite Fera, and this book is invaluable for playing them. I also appreciated the strong focus on Australian Aboriginal culture which permeates much of this book. All in all, I think this book is quite useful for any Mokole Chronicles (and quite a head ache for those who want to try and figure out the World of Darkness's "cosmology").

I love it!

This is a great book. It helps to portray the true peril that the changing breeds are in and it also shows what those who truly desire to restore the balance, not just destroy the wyrm (dissolver) are capable of. This book has enthralled me since I bought it and now I really want to get an all Mokole game off the ground (too bad that my compadres insist on involving Bastet, Changeling, and Vamps :P). If you're considering buying it to this point, DO!

This is the definitive book on the new generation Mustang circa 2005. I own the car as well as the book, so I know whereof I speak. It's a retro ride back to the muscle cars of the late 60's and early 70's, and the book gives all the details of which ones influenced the new design. Ford has literally gone back to the future with this design, and if you want to know the story of the next generation pony car, this book is definately it.

Through this unexpected, yet well choreographed, explanation of the adventures of one college student, Truax provides a sympathetic perspective on something that the film industry has long considered a topic of horror. Carefully researched legends are woven throughout the story in order to create a more interesting and well-developed storyline that defies Hollywood's overused depictions of the characters. This is one nail-biting adventure that can't be missed.

You're young; with your whole life in front of you are you ready to fight for everything that you believe in? Begin to believe in things that you thought were fiction? Someone has to, take a read and enter a world that begins a fight between two very distinct worlds. Who's stronger and smarter? Take this book home and find out what two worlds exist in the dark that will begin a fight for control. Truax's research and ability to create great pictures in the readers mind help the reader become involved in the lives and the fighting of the characters- feel their discovery, transformation, pain and live their efforts in the pages as the story begins to unfold. Who will triumph? Who will be standing when the fight is over? This book falls outside my traditional realm of reading but captured my imagination and had me turning pages to find out the end only to be teased with the subtle hint that story/battle had just started. Thank you for introducing me to a new genera of book that I might not have considered before. I look forward to the next chapter. Truax asks the reader a question at the end, what will your answer be? Here is mine- What an interesting possibility/thought you propose.

A Whole New Breed is a great start for new author T. Anthony Truax. The book was filled with excitement and thorough descriptions throughout the text. Although the story is a part of the horror genre, the story is also a coming of age tale. The hero of the story is slowly learning what his path in life holds for him. The novel reads like a comic book with splashes of action in every turn of the page. The conclusion of the book wraps up with you still wanting more.

Though this is book 4 of the series, it is the first one I have read. It was lent to me by a friend, and I am HOOKED. H. Jay Riker does a terrific job of telling it like it really was. I felt as though I was in the jungles of Vietnam right alongside these guys, and halfway through the book, that's just where I wanted to be. The characters are well developed, and the setting is described to perfection, so well in fact, that I almost smelled "nuoc mam"! Not only does the reader get a gritty look at what it was like to be a SEAL in the Vietnam era but also what kind of men did the job. For many years I have raised & trained in obedience, Rottweilers. I have quite a few Rottie books I have accumulated through the years but recently, when I was waiting for a new puppy, I read "The Rottweiler: Centuries of Service," & found it to be the best one ever. It went past the confirmation of these wonderful working dogs & into the working, health & temperament more thoroughly than I have ever read.

Outstanding! A Best-In-Show Book...

That the authors have years of experience in the rottweiler breed is evident both in this amazing book, and in the pedigrees of the many dogs enjoying enormous success in the AKC rottweiler ring today. This book is perfect for the new, or prospective, rottweiler owner. It gives good advice, not based on fad, but based on experience. The photographs are beautiful, and yes I do have three photos published in this book, but it only takes a quick browse through the pages to fall in love again, and again with this noble breed. For the experienced rottweiler owner who participates in AKC activities, this book is a photographic ride down memory lane with some of the best dogs in rottweiler history. Breeders, buy this for your puppy buyers! It will surely assist in answering the many questions of owners struggling with a new puppy. Thank you Cathy and Linda for a beautiful book, and thank you to the publisher for an amazing series.

We have 2 dogs... a Boxer and a Rottweiler. After I bought "The Boxer - Family Favorite" by the same publisher (Wiley & Sons), I decided I must have this one regarding my other favorite breed... the Rottweiler. A good looking hard cover book with 250+ pages of excellent info. Pictures adorn most pages. Topics include: History, breeding, basic care, health & symptoms, activities for you & your dog, training tips, size & incredible strength, enjoyment, and so much more. It is clearly evident that authors Thompson and Michels are dedicated to the breed. Anyone owning or considering the Rottweiler as a pet should have this book. I have half a dozen books on the breed and I find myself reaching for this one the most. Any dog-lover will admire all the pictures of these big beautiful animals and understandable print. A wonderful read.

I am trying to be cute with my title. Maybe it didn't work. But what did work for me was how informative and all-around helpful this book was for me. A former Shar-pei "co-habitant" (at a home I lived at in the 90's), I had a birds-eye view of this breed, but couldn't quite remember all the details of what to expect. This cleared it all up for me. I recommend this book for people who are trying to learn about these wonderful dogs.

I have previously owned a shar pei before, but when my husband and I started planning on getting a new puppy I thought I would find a good book on shar pei. I bought three books originally but came to find that I like this one the best. Its simple and not very big, but is filled with lots of information. Info ranges from caring for you puppy or adult dog, health concerns, nutrition, obedience training and information about the shar pei breed. I would reccommend this book to anyone who has or is getting a shar pei.

I am brand new to the breed Shar Pei's and recently bought 2 puppies for my husband for Christmas (now 3 1/2 months old). I knew that the breed was an excellent temperment for families and small children (they met my niece who is 1 1/2 yrs old and they ignored her for the most part, but played well with her, and she liked them).

I wanted a book that would tell me about the breed, possible health problems that they may have, and general living and training tips. This book absolutley fit the bill. It's the square deal.

First off, the author recognizes that this breed does have health issues, and lists those off. For a new owner, or possible owner, this lets you know what happens SPECIFIC to the Shar Pei. I have read other Shar Pei books and found them to be very general to dogs, and not just to Shar Peis.

Surfing the net, it seems hard to find specific information that you want to know before going to the vet. We live in a rural area, so our vet has not dealt with many Shar Pei's, so as the owner, I want to be as knowlegeable as possible when discussing possible problems. I found this book to help out with learning those aspects.

Overall, I fully recommend you to buy this book. Buy this book if you are considering buying a Shar Pei, and it will let you know what you are getting into.

After 4 litters, I have decided to give one of these books to each of our new owners. It is a down to earth, easy read. Anyone who reads this book should feel comfortable with the contents. They will come to know that the Shar-pei is one of the best breeds around. That is why I breed them and would recommend this book to all.
