Massively oversized hardcover, glossy pictoral covers, 624 pp; new book, never read (perhaps because no potential reader could lift it). over 1500 color and b/w photos, just about anything you'd want to know about Cocker Spaniels; over 7 1/2 pounds of book, priced to compensate for projected expensive shipping costs (really, really BIG book) This is the AMERICAN Cocker Spaniel, of course. The English Cocker is only mentioned historically. (There is a difference) Nitpicking aside, essential to Cocker breeders, including history throughout the world, breeding, genetics, selection, judging and conformation of the Cocker, obedience, pedigrees, kennel histories, and much much more.

I loved the detail

Hundreds and hundreds of color photographs of beautiful cocker spaniels, page after page of information on care, breeding, colors, history, and winners! Our Cocker Club used this book as trophies at our last Cocker Spaniel Specialty show, the winners were so excited!... This is the book to have - a must in your collection. The authors of this book are respected throughout the cocker fancy. It's a huge book that would be lovely as a coffee table conversation piece. Well worth twice the money.

I read a book review in the May "Midwest Book Review", and it said that Brookover's tense writing was like reading Stephen King or Dean Koontz. Well, the reviewers were right. This story is as creepy as they come! And there are monsters galore - enough to keep me on edge throughout the whole book. I never knew which one was going to pop up next, and just when I least expected it, wham! He nailed me. The ancient breed are nasty little guys, and they aren't the run-of-the-mill creatures. In fact, all of Brookover's monsters are very original and creative. I especially liked the Prologue where it described Ponce de Leon's discovery of the fountain of youth, but it certainly isn't what the old boy expected! When it's rediscovered in the present, that's when the real action starts. There are terrorists, four-thousand-year old baddies, an incredible demon, and of course, the blood-thirsty ancient breed. Nick Bellamy is back, along with his sidekicks Neo Doss and Crow. Believe me, they have their hands full this time! The action is intense and is wrapped around a very good plot. Congrats to Brookover. He sidestepped the sophomore jinx with his second book and delivered another fantastic read! I hope he's working on a third! Would I recommend "The Ancient Breed"? Of course. I'm going to read it again after I finish this review!

FBI Agent Nick Bellamy is back. You probably remember him from Mortal Eclipse. The Ancient Breed is a very creepy story with some very imaginative and scary creatures. Mr. David Brookover has outdone his critically acclaimed "Mortal Eclipse" with this book. Brookover sucks you in from the get go. I could not put this book down period.

I adopted a 8-week-old puppy from Humane Society and being a first time dog owner, this book is very helpful with my raising my puppy. In a month, she will be 4 years old and as a puppy, she was a GREAT puppy and today, as a dog, she is a GREAT dog! The other people have commented to me how well-behaved my dog was when she was puppy. Today, people still tell me how smart and well behaved my dog is.

Well, it's all due to that book.

I don't think this book could be any better. Here's my testimonial...

This book helped us identify a suitable puppy (and not just adopt the first one we fell in love with). The puppy we chose had serious discipline issues, but this book helped us retrain him. He grew to be an exemplary dog. Throughout his life, people asked us who had trained him. They were incredulous that our quiet, obedient, good-natured dog had once been a furniture-devouring, un-housebreakable, barking maniac that had TWICE been returned to the shelter before he was even six months old, and that we had retrained him ourselves. We owe a tremendous debt to this book.

I second all the other 5 star reviews! "Ian Dunbar's books are the best in positive dog training available." Simple, straighforward, easy to read and easy to follow instructions. No new dog owner should be without this and his Before and After You Get Your Puppy" books! I've followed his methods and took some classes at Sirius Dog Training, which teach his methods, and couldn't be happier with my two happy dogs! They are a delight to live with.

Don't hesitate for a second before buying this and his other books. If more dog owners tried his methods, which are so humane, the dog populations at shelters would plummet! So many dogs are sent to shelters because the owners don't understand that dogs don't understand from birth what we expect of them - they have to be taught!!! The best way to teach is to understand the animal's nature and why it behaves as it does, which leads to understanding how to teach it what you want. People who tell you their dog is just stubborn or who tell you that you have to dominate the dog and show it who's boss are showing their ignorance about dogs and training. Give them this book!

Great book for training your dog
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-06
This book seems to be an excellent book for training your dog -- big or small. The author takes you from trying to understand your dog, to simple things you should need to train your dog, the first basic commands, moving on to harder things. At the end the author also outlines a variety of items to discipline your dog if your dog has problems of barking, chewing etc.

Not only is the book detailed, but set up in a way that you can easily read. Lists are very helpful in this book. The book also has interesting antecdotes about the author's experience with dogs which are separated out so that people who don't want to read them don't have to read them.

The content is good to help because it doesn't limit your options to one way of correcting your dog, but gives other ideas for those of us who are only a little creative. The book even talks about what games are good to play and has given me a few ideas for games for me and my dog.

My only problem with the book is the plug for a specially designed leash that the author sells. It does sound like a good leash for a dog that is kept inside most of the time. My dog is mostly outside and so the training with the special leash doesn't look that practical to me.

I think the best part of the book is the constant encouragement to the dog owners. The author tells us that training a dog depends on our attitude and does everything possible to keep our attitude to be helpful for training our dogs. One of the better dog-training books I have found.

I bought this book years ago, back in 1995, in it's first edition. Back then, I had a Siberian Husky who was more than difficult to train. I read the book and followed Sarah's advice on how to train my hard-headed and over-active pupil. It worked! Not only did it work, but it worked very well! The techniques in this book only took about 15-30 minutes of my time each day.

In the end, I was able to effectively train my dog, especially house train, in no time! I borrowed out the book and I never saw it again! I was overjoyed to see Sarah has released a second edition. I am getting a new puppy next month, and this is my book. I even found the first edition and bought that one as well! Thanks Sarah.

Essential for anyone who lives with a dog.

This is one of the best dog-training books I've read. I've had my Border Collie for 2 1/2 years and I've read several books, online articles, and even spoke with two different dog behaviorists and still managed to learn several things from Ms. Hodgson's book.

Scold the cookies, not the dog - what a great idea. Your dog gets the idea that the cookies are a bad thing & he should just leave them alone lest he be associated with them. He doesn't want you to think HE is bad, too!

Love it.

Thank you, Ms. Hodgson - I'm happy to recommend your book to everyone I know who needs some advice on living with their canine companions.

Every dog should come with this book.

Years ago when I worked in the grooming department of a pet store, we sold cases of the first edition of this book to customers who would ask us why their dogs "misbehaved." I thought that book was the best book ever written for dog owners. The second edition is much better.

The author speaks simply and with the compassion and knowledge that comes from her years of experience with dogs and their people. This book enables people to communicate effectively with the dogs in the household, so there is mutual understanding, and "training" becomes second nature.

It is useful, informative, easily referenced, and very readable. Even if you think you know dogs, you will learn from this book, and enjoy the reading. It is not overwhelming for beginners, either.

If you have a dog, buy this book, and then be prepared to have to buy 4 more copies because you keep "lending" it to friends and family.

I have a very artistic child and another child who isn't quite as artistic. Both love this book and others from the "Draw 50" series. The one has a blast changing little things and making the pictures his own and the other has fun realizing that she too can create some cool pictures with the easy to follow instructions. This particular book has some wonderful cats featured from your common tabby to more unique household cats and large wild kitties. It's definitely worth the money.

We have gone one step further in class by making our own stationery and cards using our finished drawings. We add a complimentary quote to our drawing from the book 516 Sensational Cat Quotes, Proverbs, Quips and Jokes for Scrapbooking, Crafting and Fun ISBN 0966640578

Earthdog Ins and Outs: Guiding Natural Instincts for Success in Earthdog Tests and Den Trials

Average review score:

A must-have for all terrier/dachshund owners.
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-10
This book is written in a way that will appeal to all actual and prospective terrier owners. Frier-Murza adds depth and breadth to our basic understanding of terriers. For depth, the book covers the history of terriers (with many quotes from the 2nd century BC to the present). Illustrations from hunts in 16th century France are especially interesting. It also discusses the social forces that resulted in the emergence of today's breeds (about 30 pages). Being bred for earth work is the reason for the terrier's independence and ability to figure things out for itself, as well as the terrier's interest in chasing, tugging, etc. While actually working earth dogs is not for everyone, understanding our dog's drives and why they were bred to be the way they are can make each of us a more sensitive owner. For breadth, 29 different earthdog breeds are also highlighted in a section the brings out the working character and history, as well as the functional strengths of each breed (over 100 well illustrated pages). Breeds covered include the AKC working terriers as well as breeds like the German Jagdterrier and the American Feist and Rat Terrier (illustrated on the lap of Teddy Roosevelt). These 29 breed summaries are grouped by the regions (also described) in which the breeds emerged, thus placing them in historic and geographic context. Compared to Migliorini's book, Frier-Murza takes a more comprehensive and accurate view of both the history of the terrier's and also breed history. For example, Migliorini gives only 25 (smaller) pages (with larger type) to breed descriptions, compared to the 100 pages Frier-Murza provides. The book is very handsomely produced in near coffee table format. The hard cover book (with oversize pages) contains extensive photos. The photos are very clear, illustrative, and well produced

Thorough, cover to cover

Book gives an excellent history of working terriers up to today's terriers as we know them. It has well researched documentation on each breed and its origin. Comprehensive in the explanation of terrier hunting, performance events, both in the US and abroad. Outstanding chapters on selecting a puppy, training, terrier/dachshund organizations, and many other items of interest to both the earthdog novice and enthusiast. I have read/studied almost every book in print (current and discontinued) concerning working terriers and I would rank this book as the "bible" in it's relationship to the others.

It is a hardcover book and approximatley A4 size and 256 pages. As an example of what is in the book the chapters are as follows.

Ch 1. Terriers and Dacshunds-Earthdogs to the Bone
Ch 2. The deep roots surrounding earthdogs
Ch 3. Artificial den trials in the USA.
Ch 4. Artifical earthdog trials worldwide - Germany, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Ukraine, and Georgia. Quite amazing the different den types that are used. The Danes for example use live foxes.
Ch 5. Earthdog breeds-designed for work. Covers over 30 breeds including the Jack Russell Terrier.
Ch 6. Selecting a breed and puppy.
Ch 7. Entering a puppy or novice dog.
Ch 8. Advanced Work-digging deeper
Ch 9. Exhibiting at trials and tests
Ch 10. Show Time-how to host a den trial.
Ch 11. Field work-the real thing for your buddy.
Appendix A - Care of rats and making scent.
Appendix B - Building tunnel liners, obstacles, and cages.
Appendix C - Sources of Information.
Appendix D - Glossary of Working Earthdog terms

Except for the cover the photos are black and white but there are plenty of them within the 256 pages. I think a must for the serious earthdogger.

William Wegman's latest book is among his most beautiful. Every page illustrates what a magnificent breed of dog this is and, more importantly, just how loved this dog was by his human companion. There are some early pictures of Fay, some of Fay in pastoral settings, and some with her pups. In all of them, she remains uniquely...Fay. Some of the pictures are quite tender and poignant; and some will evoke laughter. Mr. Wegman makes us see ourselves through a different "lens" and also helps us to take ourselves less seriously. As a fortunate owner of a Weimaraner, I am very grateful to the artist William Wegman who magically manages to make us smile and at the same time allows us to see the inherent beauty and intelligence of these dogs. Sometimes they are even smarter than their owners! I will treasure this book as I do my own complex and beautiful dog. Thank you Mr. Wegman.

This book not only illustrate Wegman's artistry with a camera, but the close bonds only a dog owner would know. If you own a dog, not just a weim, this is a must read. If your a tender soul, there are passages that will mist your eyes.

It brightened my day when I first opened it up. I consider myself a pug expert, so who would have thought that even I had learned a few things from this book. I'm giving these out as gifts to my 8th street pug park posse.

I love this book. It was given to me as a gift, and I will do the same for all of my pug loving friends. The pictures are beautiful and the content is well researched and well written. I highly recommend that everyone who knows someone who has a pug go out and get this book for them. They won't be disappointed. It's just a fun read!

I'm not a pug owner, but I've known a few and I think this book really captures the essence of Pug life and life with Pugs. If pugs could read I know they would appreciate the wit and insight this book provides. With amusing trivia and great art, this book is a must for Pug afficionados. I can't wait to see what Ms Schuckhart comes up with for other breeds (especially the ones I have). Any dog lover would love this series.

If you don't own this book, you should! Earl and Pearl's adventures are entertaining and accessible to pre-readers while the Pringle's clever photo/illustrations and word-smithing will keep any dog- or farm-loving adult amused. The "stars" of the book are all rescued dogs who have found themselves in loving (perhaps even indulgent) homes. I hope the Pringles publish another Earl and Pearl adventure ASAP.

This is a wonderful book! I've bought it both for myself and friends and it has brought smiles to the faces of everyone I've shown it to. The pictures are marvelous - creative, colorful and fun. The humor is simple and warm. I couldn't think of a more engaging way for adults and children to share the ABC's.

A delightful book!

Anyone with a sense of humor and an eye for quality will enjoy this absolutely delightful book! Sit down and relax (with or without the kids), and get ready for the most enjoyable journey through the alphabet you have ever taken. Canine farmers, Earl and Pearl, will cleverly lead you from A to Z by sharing their life on the farm. These two talented authors will leave you howling for more! Highly recommended.

Everyone I have shown this to -- and I have shown it to dozens of people, all ages -- have wanted to know where they could get a copy. The illustrations are amazing, each a piece of artwork with lots of clever details and bright colors and the text is sometimes subtle in its humor and other times quite blatant in its wordplay. The looks the photographer caught on the dogs' faces fit the text so well. It is a joy! Not just another alphabet book...it captures a simpler way of life, down on the farm. (And another funny thing is that, despite the title, there is not one tail to be found in any of the pictures!)

A wonderful, colorful, entertaining & imaginative children's book!

The first thing I noticed about this book was the great quality of the printing...the photographs are extremely eye-catching and clear and colorful. And of course the subject is highly entertaining! Earl and Pearl on the Farm shows the daily life of "Earl and Pearl" on their farm and the photos were taken straight out of the American heartland (then "altered" to create Earl and Pearl in their canine/human form) and feature prairie/farm landscapes and smalltown grocery stores as a backdrop to the adventures and observations of Earl and Pearl. It's a great ABC book for children but is also full of puns and wordplay that adults will find entertaining. I felt this was a very creative and well-done children's book; the most original that I've seen in awhile. People may make comparisons to the photos of William Wegman, but this book has photos that do more to tell and illustrate a story. And it's wonderful that all of the "dog models" used were shelter animals. I think that would make it a great gift for any adult interested in unique books and passionate about adopting animals from shelters. I bought copies of this book for several friends with children and it was very well-received all-around. Highly recommended.
