I'm connected to the military and find little time to read. A friend loaned me Book One in the warrior Breed series "Silver Star" and I suddenly found time. The most memorable moment was when Tangretti takes the first obstacle at Normandy...ever see the movie "Saving Private Ryan"? Same scenario..I had this "ah-hah; it must be real" when Tangretti says "Sir, you need to move. I have orders to blow this obstacle." If you know any true SEALs that haven't already read the series and love it; it makes a gift he'll thank you for with every new book. Let's hope it becomes a movie!!

As a reader with an interest in the Navy SEALS,I have read (and own)this title and each subsequent book. Although I am in no way a historian, I think this book does a good job describing the early beginnings of the SEALS and is a good read if you are into this sort of subject. Personally, I have enjoyed all of this author's books on the subject and as this is the first book in the series it's a good place to start. It reads a little diffrently from Demo Dick Marcinko's Rouge Warrior books, so don't expect the same thing. As noted above, 5 Stars to Mr. Riker!

Good, but some material weighed my patience

This book is the story of the early Navy SEALS, starting in World War II. Many of the scenes are very exciting, especially the end, which takes place on D-Day, storming the beach at Normandy. But, some of this book still bothered me. Much of the non-action parts of this book were entertaining, but some of it seemed false, and tedious. Also, some of the dialouge seemed fake, like real people don't talk like that. There were also descriptions of actual battles during the war discussed by Riker in the novel. I don't know if he was accurate or not, but at times it almost sounded like he was making it up. But, this book was all around a good read, and I will read the next book in the series.

The actual author is William Keith. He has over 60 published novels, many under pen names. He is an outstanding author of military fiction and science fiction. His recent works in the Bolo series (published under his own name) combine the two.

Great Book to start an excellent Series.

H. Jay Riker starts of his SEALs series with a great book about the start of the legendary program. This book draws you in, and grabs you. The end is so shocking and suspenseful, that I was almost in tears after I put it down! Read this book, it is great.

This is an excellent resource tool for Jack Russell terrier owners to folks who just happen to love the breed. A spirited, loving dog, the Jack Russell terrier more often than not makes for a very appealling family pet.

Jacks have an interesting history. Parson Jack Russell created the breed to be good mousers and hunting dogs in the late 19th century. Jacks are closely related to the fox terriers. In the intervening years, Jacks have gained popularity and fame. Jacks have starred in a number of recent movies and commericals. Dana Carvey starred with a Jack named Barkley in "Clean Slate" (Barkley also starred on several episodes of "Full House"). The popular TV sitcom "Frasier" has a Jack named Eddie (real name Moose and father to the Jack who starred in "My Dog Skip"). "Wishbone" is the most famous Jack to date. Recent coverage on this delightful breed has certainly helped boost their popularity as does this book.

A must have for your collection

I was very taken with the book. So much that I contacted Mary Strom and purchased one of her puppies. She was not only very helpful, but made sure I had every bit of information I needed to make my Jack Russell terrier happy and healthy. I recommend this book to anyone that is looking to purchase or adopt a Jack Russell terrier. The information contained within is indispensable.

For current or potential JRT owners this book is a must!

This book lets you get to know the exciting and roudy Jack Russell Terrier. My wife and I purchased this book prior to purchasing our JRT. It was (and still is) a wonderful resource. Anything for grooming, training and enjoying your pup is in this book. The author also includes stories from her past ownership of many Jack Russells. Excellent book!

This book is great, it has beautiful pictures and info. However, I did find a few things that were not to great. First of all, when describing the Alaskan Malamute, the illustration had a pure black dog... Malamutes are NEVER pure black, they can be all white but that's the only exception for all one color, the only labeled pic of malamutes are an all white and all black, no markings! They also had very vague info on them. Malamute's real name is ALASKAN MALAMUTE, no where in the book did it say ALASKAN in front of malamute, well howcome you put SIBERIAN and ALASKAN in front of the husky? And two, I got a pup this August and I'm going to start training, so I read the chapter called "How to train Sled Dogs" it had absolutely nothing about training them except for, start training as pups! Blank spot! On what do you train them? All in all though, this was a beautiful book, I just use it for the pictures now.

A thing of beauty.....a thing of knowledge

"Born to Pull" was a joyous surprise. I expected the usual photos and line drawing illustrations accompanying the "how to" text, but was delighted to see the exquisite watercolors of my favorite subject, sled dogs. The artist and author make an excellent team in this effort, rather like champion duel lead dogs! A must for any mushers' library, armchair or otherwise. Perfect for gifts.

"Born to Pull" was recommended to me by the owner of the kennel where our family would be going for our first mushing experience. Though aimed at upper elementary kids, the amount of information is amazing. The illustrations enhance the content beautifully; particularly stunning is a painting of a team pulling under the Northern Lights.

Most enjoyable are the stories interspersed throughout; stories from well-known mushers such as Gary Paulsen and Jamie Nelson. Stories of dogs that decided to run the wrong way at the end of a race, and of dogs who found the way home in a raging storm.

Reading this book did not guarantee that I would not wipe out on the sled, but when I did, I knew just what the snow hook was!

Not for kids only!

I found this book in the kids' section while looking for Christmas presents. Knew nothing about it, and sled dogs are not my dog-of-choice, but was immediately compelled to buy it even tho it cost more than I'd planned. Amazingly full of good information, understanding of dogs and pulling, but there was a twinkle in the eye of the author, too. Imagine the runway team surrounding the ice-fisherman and eating all his catch!

The illustrations too are extraordinary. Such obvious awareness of the inner workings of dogs is unusual. The expressions of each dog are wonderful.

Highest recommendation for sled-dog enthusiast or any dog person, young or old.

This clear, concise, well-written book covers everything you need to know about running a rescue program, from initial organization to volunteer training and management to networking to finding financial support to legal issues to the intake, fostering, and adoption processes. Boneham provides advice on presenting your group to the public and on generating press releases as well. Included are several sample forms and formats. While the book focuses on breed rescue, the information is equally useful for all-breed rescues. Strongly recommended not just for those starting a rescue group, but for those working with already established groups.

After being involved with Breed Rescue for close to a year, I then found this book on breed rescue. It is well organized, succinct and, in my opinion, complete. There is so much to consider with rescue that it is easy to get lost in the activities. I am now recommending the book to others who want to become involved. To be well informed and have each person in rescue with a sense of the same goal and way of doing things helps enormously. Many thanks to the author who took the time to put together such a wonderful reference. I still refer to it from time to time.

This Book Will Save the Lives of Many Dogs

Review Date: 2002-11-02
A sincere desire to do the right thing, combined with knowledge and skill in dog care, are not enough to enable people to successfully run the nonprofit business of a dog rescue organization. In this book, Boneham leads people through the necessary decisions and policies. Her advice will help rescuers avoid myriad pitfalls that stop so many from continuing in rescue.

Boneham sets high standards for rescue, and explains the reasons for each criteria. Volunteers working within these rules will have a greatly increased chance of remaining in the work long-term, and people adopting dogs from rescues run by these principles will have good experiences. Most of all, the lives of dogs will be saved, and that's what makes it all worthwhile.

Sheila Boneham's Breed Rescue: How To Start And Run A Successful Program is a complete and thoroughly "user friendly" guide to launching and operating a dog breed rescue. Boneham covers every aspect including getting organized; finding, training and managing volunteers; acquiring financial and community support; networking with other animal shelters and rescue groups; finding the dogs; screening dogs for medical problems; determining a dog's temperament and behavior; placing rescued dogs; and promoting/publicizing the dog rescue program. Breed Rescue also provides lists of contact names and addresses, as well as extensive collection of pertinent sample documents. If you see a need for rescuing dogs in your community but no current resources for addressing the problem, then begin with a careful reading of Sheila Boneham's Breed Rescue!

We loved this book, great pictures, topics nicely arranged, very helpful basic information with some specifics. We plan on introducing a Bullmastiff to our family very soon and this book gave us a comfortable understanding of the breed. We do plan on purchasing a few more books on training but we feel we have all the knowledge we need about the Bullmastiff. Even if you do not plan on buying a bullmastiff you will after reading this book.

We are new to the breed and bought this book earlier this year to learn more about our new family member. Although, my first take on the book is that it was too focused on the professional breeder and showing the dog, I find I continue to go back to this book for basic information. Seems that I glean a little more info with each re-read. I still have unanswered basic questions but overall the book gave me much valuable information. We love the breed and are now 8 months into rearing a beautiful brindle bullie girl.

As a cat-owner looking for a dog, I needed help. I've only lived with cats during my lifetime (except the dog my parents had until I was 5). This book gives information about the different breeds of dogs, about finding a breeder or rescuing an animal, plus much much more. If you are looking into finding the type of dog that will fit into your household, I highly recommend this book. My husband also found it to be full of information, and he's been a dog-owner all of his life!

I just finished reading this book and buying my first puppy. This was my bible. I even had folded down pages and brought the book with me when I went to pick up my puppy at the breeder. This book was great because if you go on the AKC web site, they describe dogs by the qualities I didn't care about. They talk about fur markings, tail length, and things about being show quality. This book told me what I wanted to know about each breed like if it's good with kids, how much it sheds, and typical behaviors you can expect. It does that for many breeds including those considered rare. All the info was here about how to find a puppy, questions to ask when interviewing breeders, what all the health certifications mean, etc. It's told from the perspective of a person on the inside who is clearly knowledgeable about the dog world. It would be nice if more of the pictures were in color, as opposed to just the top 20 breeds, but you can't have everything and it would cost a lot more if it did. But overall, it's a great book for someone interested in getting a dog and wanting to know about all the different breeds.

I recommend this book to all dog owners, regardless of breed. For those Labradorially inclined, the breed-specific information is invaluable, honest, and detailed. For Labradorians and all other dog owners, the behavior and training sections are some of the best I've read. This book is comprehensible and comprehensive.

The layout and writing style make the information extremely accessible. The information itself is extremely detailed and important to all dog owners. Joel and Eve have succeeded in explaining the secrets of making a good dog into a great dog, through management and training.

It's no surprise this book is so popular. Not only is it about one of the most wonderful and popular breeds of dog today, but it is chock full of information vital to dog owners of any breed.

In my capacity as a professional dog trainer, I have had occasion to work with puppy owners who have read this book, and I have to say "What a difference a book makes"--this book! Owners who have read this book understand how their dogs' minds work, and grasp what I have to teach them about training and problem solving that much easier. Thank you, Joel and Eve, for helping me do my job better!

I'm just an owner and bought this book purely from a consumer's point of view. The book mainly deals with breeding kennels, the show ring, and "professional" topics such as this, but there is a section on grooming that is helpful (less the stuff about the show ring). It's fun to see pictures of other poodles, and the book has quite a few. Of special interest to me were the pictures of the same dog at different ages. For a consumer, I would rate this book about a 3. For a would-be or novice breeder, 4-5. Beth, owner of Marjonlie Chocolate Truffle, a very happy little "it."

This was an excellent all-around poodle book. I have several, but this is probably my favourite. I have a black standard and although he is not a show dog, the chapters on coat care, how it grows, grooming, etc. were very in-depth. Though I think that it was geared primarily to people in the show circle, pet owners of poodles should not be put-off. I also have Eileen Geeson's book on the standard poodle and Bruce Fogle's Dog breed handbook on the poodle, both also valuable resources. The only thing I found a bit lacking in Del Dahl's (and Eileen Geeson's) books was there was not enough information on temperment and personality.

As a breeder of rare breeds in the Illawara region of Australia, I enjoyed adding to my poultry library a book as unique as this one. If you enjoy chicken breeds & photos of them I would recommend this book. The author has used a photgraphic studio to capture & highlight features of chickens that would never have been appreciated in previous books. I had purchased his original 'Extraordinary Chickens' & was delighted to add this extra book. The text is succinct & correlates well with other chicken information in other books. I recommend this book to all poultry enthusiasts.

This book is full of photographs of chickens. Not your typical chicken pictures mind you. You will see various breeds of chickens (many you have never seen before that are very interesting to look at), and you will also get a brief chicken history in the back of the book. What I especially enjoyed was the fact that the author wrote a small paragraph on each breed (again in the back of the book) featured in the book. I enjoyed the pictures of the various types of jungle fowl (the chickens early ancestor), and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is not a must have, but it sure is an enjoyable one.

My friend Marjorie is a person who is very fond of chickens. She decorated her little rental cottage with a chicken/rooster motif. I sent her this book for her birthday, because I knew she would be the right person to appreciate it. She called and raved about the pictures in the book. She said she did not know there were so many different kinds of chickens. Marjorie was delighted, and I was pleased to have made her so happy. The is not a book for everyone. but in the right hands it is a joy.

This is a beautiful book with lots of high quality photos. The chickens are not presented the ordinary way (from one side) but let us see more realistic poses like stretching, crowing or flapping. There is not much information about the species, but you really don't need it in this book. Lots of other books gives you that information, but this is the only choise (as I see it) for this kind of chicken portrait photos. The book is a follow-up to Extraordinary chickens, and I think you should buy them both!
