Wonderfully Campy... Review Date: 2007-07-23
By the way, I read the previous "1-Star" review, and it is hard to believe that any person with an ounce of common sense would think they are actually buying a book of real postcards that they could tear out and mail to friends!

Doesn't get betterReview Date: 2006-03-29
Having read the book, it has answered a lot of questions as to why the Jamaican social and political landscape is as it is today, and why Jamaican society has emerged as one that is caught up on a culture of violence, something that the political leaders are now trying to change. I might also add, that this also answered questions my father also had regarding what was taking place in inner city Jamaica.
Interesting to note, when this book was published, the then Prime Minister banned its sale and distribution in Jamaica, and filed suit against Ms. Gunst for libel and defamation, and eventually had to withdraw the lawsuit when asked to identify what areas of the book were libelous and subject to legal action.
Of also interesting note, is that at the time this book was released the BBC did a documentary in Jamaica called The Yardies, which independently confirmed what Ms. Gunst has written about, and was also banned by the Prime Minister at the time from being aired on national television (censorship at its best!!!)
Thanks Laurie Guns-t, and I hope that there will be a follow up book on this.

I ordered and paid for this book ($47) and never received the book nor any reply to several follow-ups. I don't understand why their website is still online.

The authoritative work of British Brass dial longcase clocksReview Date: 2001-11-21
This is not a "pretty picture" coffee tabel book produced for show, although it is profusely illustrated, but most pictures are black and white and show technical details of movement,, dial or case, which are of much more value to the serious horological scholar, than the glossy overall pictures.
A MUST have book for any serious clock collector.

brighton the place to be and the places to beReview Date: 1999-10-12
a must for anyone who loves brighton and anyone who misses it. to read this book is to take you back to where your heart is. if you have never been to brighton the book will attract you, but the town will grab you, sneak into your heart and never leave, always drawing you back.
if you don't like the book, or even don't like brighton, then all of us here will be much the better for you staying away.

"The Bookshops of London" is exactly what it sounds like: extensive listings of independent, specialty, and chain bookstores, with cross-listings so you can find the bookstore you want within the section you're reading. The editorial stance is fairly balanced and descriptive rather than judgmental (although Jackson seems a bit obsessive over the concept of the new Piccadilly Waterstone's superstore, and one familiar favourite shop of mine is described as "rather scruffy.") Addresses, phone and fax numbers, opening hours, and websites and email (where available) compliment the concise but targeted descriptions. An appendix lists shops by area (postal code) and in alphabetical order to aid in finding the right shop.
As comprehensive as this is, I'd love to see the nearest Tube stop added to each bookshop listing in the next edition--surely that's the quickest and easiest way to describe a bookshop's location! This small fault aside, this is an essential and comprehensive guide for the book buyer, collector, and bibliophile; no book-buying trip to London is complete without it. In no time at all, your own copy will be dog-eared and highlighted.
