Wells' book can be read just for the story of her life with corgis or it can be read for the inner journey she takes in understanding motherhood. Short, but much food for thought. Well worth reading twice.

Courageous and Original

Review Date: 2003-01-28
This book is moving, scrupulously honest, and sharply--perfectly--written. And it is original. I've never read another book quite like it.

The book impresses me as a spiritual autobiography, "spiritual" being, like most words, a metaphor, but gesturing toward the sacred in the widest sense. Life is sacred in that sense, and this book is about life and death. It reads as if the author has journeyed all her adulthood to find the sources of life, freedom, and joy, until she and those sources at last find each other.

The author seems to be inviting all her readers to share this deep discovery with her, whether they be family or friends or strangers. The concepts of "mothering" and "maternal" can often take on so much cultural baggage that their vital reality becomes obscured. In Brood Bitch: A Mother's Reflection, Celia Townsend Wells re-discovers bedrock realities through innovative and courageous introspection-and through fine writing.

Profound meditation on parent-child, human-animal bonds
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-11
A graceful and poignant meditation on mother love, mother work, the parent-child relationship, and the human-animal relationship. With great sensitivity and insight and no self pity, Wells reveals her own experiences first as a married and then single mother of a daughter, and as the surrogate mother of puppies who survive the death of their mother minutes after the puppies' birth. This book will move readers interested in the bonds between parents and children or humans and animals and the complexes of emotions and attitudes associated with these bonds.

Over the last ten years, my husband and I have had several Boston Terrier litters, each time we not only consulted this book, but have read it from cover to cover multiple times. Each time we seemed to learn a new technique or lesson. This book takes you from a natural conception to an artifical conception to whelping naturally to c-sections. We saved many babies because of the author's ability to write exactly what needed to be done to tube feed, bottle feed or keep the baby warm. This book is a MUST for any breeder

This is a WONDERFUL book! It covers more than any other book on reproduction, and I won't have a litter without it by my side. I have read all the others, and they sit in my library. I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS OUT OF PRINT! It is such a GREAT book! Get it if you can, wherever you can, if you ever plan to breed. What COMPLETE information, for ALL breeds.

Good for professional and also good for non vetrin. in Europe it is not possible to take a book like this. Most Vetr. can learn from this book too. We are on the race tracks in europe since 25 years with afgaanhounds and since 20 vears in the top, and in this book i found many news.

The essential greyhound care guide.

This book is the complete guide for all owners of greyhounds and other sighthounds, especially those lucky owners of ex-racers. The sometimes specialised care, feeding and veterinary attention necessary for healthy greys is explained here in great detail. This book is an excellent everyday guide, as well as a great emergency reference. Every greyhound owner should have one-share it with your adoption group, and definitely show it to your vet.

a must have for anyone racing any sighthound

This book is the most valuable book I own. THE defininitive source for anyone in amature or professional dog racing. In the five years I have competed my Whippets in amature racing, this book has been very valuable. I just used this book to diagnose a severe toe injury that nobody at the track recognized. My local vet would not have known what to do, but my findings in this book led me to call a specialist who confirmed my findings and can perform the necessary surgury. This book saved my dogs ability to run again.

I have used the exams and treatments in this book countless times to diagnose and treat racing injuries in my dogs that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Many times I have left the track saying "I don't know how he got hurt." or "I don't know why he is limping." I went home, and got out this book, and found the answer.

The training methods are very precise and specific. The schedule for conditioning a dog is layed out week by week.

If you run dogs, you must have this book.

Thoroughbred Breeding Dynasty

Great Breeders like the Hancocks are truly legendary men, whose impact on Thoroughbred racing and breeding will continue to be felt well into this millenium. The insights into their selection of breeding stock and successful development of continuing sire lines should be studied by all breeders and horse owners. Their firm beliefs in how to breed classic winning horses has stood the tests of time. If more people studied their priorities and methods, the days of a trend toward more 2YO and sprint racing could be reversed. Their ability to breed horses that could run distances at 10f and up at 3, remain sound, and pass their excellence to later generations. There is a tradition at Claiborne to put each new stallion in the stall of his sire(upon the sire's death), with the brass nameplates of former occupants. I will never forget visiting Secretariat only 2 years from his death and looking at his stall. Above his name was Nasrullah, Bold Ruler, and Secretariat(Risen Star followed). Horses whose influence, along with another Claiborne stallion, Mr. Prospector, are still infuencing racing through the excellence of their grandsons and granddaughters. This book is full of history, theory, practices, family issues, and fully defines the title of Great Breeders.

It was so nice to actually find written work on the Morab breed. The author has done his homework, and the history of the breed is well-researched. I enjoyed reading it, and feel even more proud to be a Morab owner. There are pedigrees, black and white and color photos, plus information on some Morab breeders and their breeding programs. Club information is also included in source information. Recommended to the Morab owner, or anyone just curious about the breed!

Dr. Vanderlip's book is just what the collie fancy needs - a scientifically sound book that covers the genetics of color, coat and most importantly, disease inheritance in the collie. She has done the collie breed a service by discussing collie-specific conditions in one reader-friendly reference. I'm looking forward to the revised edition!

This excellent book, written by a world renowned collie breeder and canine reproductive specialist, is a treat from start to finish. Dr. Vanderlip knows from where she speaks, having bred International Collie Champions and exported Collies worldwide. The section on color inheritance is the best in print today. The section on medical and genetic problems is very well done with photos to illustrate the text. The multi-page bibliography is one of the finest I`ve ever seen, opening up a whole new reference to enable the reader to research areas of interest further. The depth of this book shouldn`t be underestimated and having a copy on the shelf to refer to is a pleasure and a delight. This is the only veterinary reference book on Collies that I know of.

I purchased this book in my research for information before purchasing my first snake with my grandson. This book is a MUST for anyone looking for information on care, feeding, housing, breeding and anything else about corn snakes. After reading this book I purchased our first corn snake from the author. It answered just about all of my questions and the author helped me with everything else so I was really prepared when our snake arrived. Interesting book even if you don't own a snake!

Best Corn Snake Book In Print
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-04
This is, quite simply, the best book on corn snakes in print. I'm astonished that Amazon seems not to have it in stock (as of Jan. 06). Don't be deceived by the series title (Professional Breeders)--this is a book that all corn snake owners (or prospective owners) should have, including those who have no interest in breeding methods (although the breeding section does a better job of describing the various morphs to prospective buyers than any other corn snake book I've seen). The author--Don Soderberg, one of the most prominent breeders in the field--walks the prospective owner through the process of preparing for and buying a corn snake in great detail--I can't think of anything that has been missed here. Every contingency (including illness and escape) has been covered, and even experienced owners will find this volume to be useful. A good example is the author's discussion of vivarium temperatures. Most corn snake books (and online resources) simply say there should be an 85* warm side and a 75* cool side. But rarely do these sources say where the temperature reading should be taken--and when they do, they often provide contradictory, or illogical advice. This volume not only provides a detailed explanation for how to establish temperatures in your vivarium, it also provides a strong argument for why such a method is best. After spending six months reading everything I could find on corn snake care before purchasing my first snake, I have found this book to be more useful than anything else I have looked at.

This book is the bible for those interested in the genetics of cats. While it is written in scientific terms, it is still easily understood by most. The concise and logical fashion in which it is written allows the reader to progress through the possibilities in cat genetics. This book provides all the available information on everything from the inheritance of disease to the inheritance of color.

Yes, this is 'THE' cat genetics book :)

There are cat breeders, and there are Cat Breeders! If litter constantly crumbles off your shoes, and you don't 'know' a cat until you've seen its' pedigree, you're a Cat Nerd :] Mastering Robinson's book will be your last 'final' to achieving Grand Champion Cat Nerd status! I must admit to a personal bias in favor of this book as I enjoy combing apart a puzzling test cross as much as playing with kittens! This is one *serious* book! As with most things genetic, Robinson has generated considerable controversy with certain of his assertions and conclusions, but this is without a doubt 'The Merk' for serious cat breeders. His work begins with a quick refresher for those in need. But frankly, if you're an 'old timer' who has never pulled at least a B in a full-blown 300 level Mendelian genetics course, you'll be in over your head by page five. There are separate sections addressing individual breeds and type, providing much of the information you've always wondered about. With this book as a foundation you can move your breeding program into the realm of testable objective research. You'll know how to determine, for example, if a particular coat pattern results from the heterozygotic interaction of codominant alleles, from the presence of an unlinked modifier gene, or if you really have a new dominant mutant. Ooooooh!!! With this book you will evolve an analytical eye, enabling you to extract meaningful details from the haphazard work of hobby breeders - a great time saving resource for a serious breeder. Are you working with a clear goal in mind, or just putting cats together? The good news: this is an advanced text for a rare few :) The bad news: this is an advanced text for a rare few :( If you've found this review, have read the book, and would like to indulge in some technical prose with a fellow Cat Nerd, please write - it's lonely out here! Avoiding legal and tax problems are important aspects of every horse business. This book, written by an attorney with input from many horsepersons, trainers, attorneys, equine instructors and CPAs, fully explains what a horse business must do to ensure that their business is not ruled a hobby. He fully explains recordkeeping, tax laws, legal considerations including liability and insurance, contracts and even estate planning. Sample forms for sales, leases, breeding and syndications are included. I can't recommend strongly enough that you obtain a copy of this book if you have or wish to start a horse business. You can't afford to run your business or talk to the IRS without this information.

Award-winning author Edward L. Bown continues his chronicle of the most skilled, wise, and successful racehorse breeders in Legacies of the Turf: A Century of Great Thoroughbred Breeders, volume 2. Picking up where volume 1 left off, Legacies of the Turf covers the last fifty years and traces both equine and human family lines with exacting precision. Black-and-white photographs illustrate the meticulous narration; all equine geneaology material is heavily researched and condenced in tree form at the close of the book. A "must-have" for horse enthusiasts avidly interested in following and learning from generations of human and animal legends.

In Legacies Of The Turf: A Century Of Great Thoroughbred Breeders (Vol. 1), racing historian and expert Edward L. Bown presents the stories of some of the greatest Thoroughbred race horses in history and the often charismatic, powerful, or quirky individuals who supported them. Capitalists, philanthropists, and women working with the bloodlines of champion steeds soon learned that the stellar a few sires and dams dominated racing circuit, and true rivalries between both humans and horses, on and off the race field permeate this fascinating, nicely illustrated, and highly recommended horse racing chronicle.
