Very disappointed the book depicted seems to be a beautifully illustrated book and it is described as a hardcover book but its a much smaller paperback

You just can't go wrong with this one. It stirs up those deep longings for adventure in all of us. It's a marvelous classic. From kindergarteners on up, it works for everyone. It'll capture your imagination and you'll be caught up in the story before you know what happened. There's nothing offensive. No boring parts. It will inspire a passion for reading (and quite possibly horses!) in any child that voluntarily reads this gem of a book. I love books and this is the one that started it all.

While I adore Farley's entire series, THE BLACK STALLION is my favorite book in the lineup. Alex and the Black are THE best team and I never grow tired of rereading the book.

If you like horses this book is for you. The basic plot:
-after a shipwreck, a kid ends up stranded on an island with a horse
-the two befriend each other and help each other (kid feeds horse, horse kills snake near kid)
-the two our found and taken back to NY, where the kid lives
-all are happy to see the kid's alive
-the horse has amazing talent in the field of racing, but the kid has no papers for the horse so he is unable to race it
-they find a race that was set up by the owners of the horses and ask the owners if he can be entered into it
-they say yes
The book ends with a thrilling race that you feel you are riding in.

In something of a change of pace, a horse book that may just be slightly more directed at boys than girls, although the plot stays fairly similar.

Boy helps out horse in island shipwreck situation. Horse returns the favour. Horse of course is an impressive specimen and can do the fast running thing quite nicely.

So, off to the races then go.

and she got a concussion. Blackie was never found.
But Sam is sure a wild stallion every one calls
the phantom (because he's a gray) is her Blackie all
grown up. Especially when he shows up at the ranch.
pretty amazing scenes. Really good.

I really loved the Phantom Stallion books, and I recommend you start with the first one so you can follow the series. It's a great story, and hard to put down. My mom and I read it together and she thought the writing was great. I liked it because it really tells a lot about how Samantha loves horses and gets over her fear of them after a fall.

I read three more books in the series after this one and will read more. Highly recommended.

Phantom Stallion The Wild One is about a girl named Sam. When she was little she fell off her horse Blackie, and was injured very badly. Her dad sends her away to live with her aunt in San Fransisco for two years. When she comes back home Zanzibar (Blackie) has run away and didn't come back. That night, Sam sees a silver horse walking around outside. It has been appearing every night. It has also shown Sam a secret place in the desert where there's a whole herd of wild horses. When Sam, her dad, and some cowboys go on a cattle drive, Sam meets Linc Slocum who wants the phantom for himself. Can Sam stop him?? I really liked this book because it's about horses and I love horses. It is also a great adventure, and the author really describes it well. I hope you'll enjoy this book as much as I did!

There is a very simple way to sum up my review. This book, and the rest of the series, is fantastic. In comparison to other horse series, this series ranks the highest, far above most others. This is my favorite horse series.

Here is a list of other horse series I've tried:

The Saddle Club - The books were pretty good. I read the first two, but since the books were never avaliable to me, I never read any more. However, the two books I read were pretty good. The television series was a little too corny for me. The acting and script was awful. There were some decent actors, but some over-acted. Dialogue in the script was not well done. There was a lot of, "Oh, will my horse be okay? Whatever will we do?!" One hundred plus books in a single series is not recommended, either. The main reason this series was a turn-off.

The Horseshoe Trilogies - I read one of the books in this series. It was pretty good, but it didn't make we want to read the rest. The book was too short and lacked a certain zing.

Thoroughbred - I think I read one of the first ones in the series, and I thought it was good. So, I friend went out and bought one of the books further into the series. A different author had taken over and I stopped after the first couple of pages. Not much in comparison to the original author, even if I only read one book that she wrote! Besides, this wasn't the series for me anyway. I don't have the feel of horse racing, because I've never been to a race and it has never been a huge thrill to me. Of course I love watching gorgeous Thoroughbreds race around a track, but I'm biting my nails at the same time, worrying that one will trip or break a leg. Take Barbaro for example. So this series didn't cut it.

Heartland - I liked these books. Many people say the books were too dark, but I disagree. I think they were scary at times, and made me worry, but that kept me reading. Best of all, these books were realistic, unlike other horse series I have come across. The events, characters, dialogue, ect. all seem real. HOWEVER, the books sometimes veered off the subject of horses. I felt there was too much romance and not enough horses. Problems with the horses seemed realistic, though. This series still didn't hit, but it was better. At least it kept me reading.

Chestnut Hill - I read the third book in this series and it was wonderful! Again, realistic characters and horses. However, in the first book, why would Dylan do something so stupid? If she was experienced with horses, she would know riding at night and taking a bet from one of those girls would lead to trouble. In the third book, there wasn't as much romance as Heartland, so that was an improvement. And this series seems more on my age level. Plus, the characters dealing with the horses seemed realistic. Lauren Brooke is a very good writer, but again, this series wasn't the best in the world. All of these series seemed to be following a pattern. They were all in the English style and some of them either spoiled their horses rotten, or veered off the subject of horses too much.

Phantom Stallion - That's when I came upon this series. From the first book, I was instantly attached. The author has such realistic characters, plots, dialogue, events, and settings.

Samantha Forster was in a riding accident two years ago. She fell off her colt, Blackie, while riding through a gate. In Blackie's attempt to escape, Sam fell from his back and catapulted to the ground. As she was falling, Blackie's hooves caught her head. Jake Ely, Sam's friend, galloped back to Sam's family's ranch to get help. Two years later, Sam is returning from living with her Aunt Sue in San Franscico, California. She was in a coma and, deciding that being closer to a hospital in California then two hours away in Nevada would be better for Sam, Sam also lost Blackie during all this. He had galloped for the range, the wild blood from his mustang father, Smoke, carrying through the tough events that life on the range can bring.

The night Sam comes home, a stallion comes to her and she knows it's her beloved horse grown and gone wild, with now earning the name of the legendary Phantom. Sam's horse was no longer the midnight-black colt named Blackie, he was now the silver stallion known as the Phantom. But along with every good friendship, their are tough times thrown at them. The antagonist (bad guy) named Linc Slocum, is determined to get the Phantom off the range and own the stallion himself as a "trophy". Sam won't let that happen. She knows the Phantom wants to be free, but how can she guarentee his freedom? Linc Slocum pulls a totally horrible and very realistic stunt that threatens to take the Phantom off the range. Only Sam can help him. But how?

The rest of the series is fantastic. All of the books are packed with adverture, realistic events, exciting plots, believable dialogue, and horses! And the subject does not veer off horses. There is the occasional couple of pages with Sam being in school at Darton High, which is always interesting and fun to read! Every book is a pleasure to read and the best horse series I have ever come across.

The idea for the series is also original. This series, unlike most horse series, features the Western style of riding. It also includes ranch life and mustangs, unlike the usual stable-bred, glossy horses in a fancy riding stable with girls running around pampering them and slipping them horse cookies every second. Sam and her family treat the horses on River Bend Ranch where Sam lives with respect, but they don't spoil them rotten. Sam tries to see through the horse's eyes, but she doesn't make a big deal out of petty things. She uses the same saddle for years, and never complains, she doesn't polish her saddle every time she spots a speck of dirt, and she makes her horse Ace work for his food, a nice warm bed, and a long curry-combing session.

Character personalities, actions, and dialogue are also what keep the series moving. Sam has two best friends, Jennifer Kenworthy and Jake Ely. Jen is extremely intelligent, but is always cracking me up with her sarcastic sense of humor! Jake is the quiet, silent type and is a cowboy through and through. He is always teasing Sam and it's always fun to read about what this mysterious, quiet, and horse-loving guy will do and say next! Another antagonist, although not as big as Linc Slocum, is Linc's daughter, Rachel. She has perfect clothes, hair, and is popular in school. But she has a horrible personality and is determined to make Sam's life miserable every chance she can get. Whether that's by dissing a horse, questioning Sam's clothes, embarrassing her, or flirting with Jake, Rachel will do anything to make Sam want to sock her. Terri Farley depicts all of her characters well and realistically.

The author also doesn't talk down to her readers. For some unfamiliar phrases, she'll take a moment to explain, but she'll expect you to know horse colors, breeds, tack, habits, ect. Terri also goes in vivid detail when describing a horse, a herd of mustangs, or a new character, which keeps me reading. This is a fantastic series. It's adventerous, exciting, realistic, heart-wrenching (but not dark), the horses are treated with respect, but not spoiled rotten, the dialogue is interesting, the characters are fun to read about, and the series is one of the most realistic series I have ever come upon. And most original!

Keep up the FANTASTIC work, Terri! And every horse lover should read this series!

This book was EXCELLENT!! I love it!

The excitement of the book kept me reading!! Even thought there was fictional parts in the book, like how Man O' War's Dam was not gentle and sweet but nervous and A LOT like her Sire. And other fictional things like how the new owner did not see Man O' War until after he bought him. Even though these things were false in the story, I think it is great and helps people learn the life of one of the greatest horses in history!! When I read the book I felt like I was there, And I love when books help you do that! I really hope they can mke more books like this on othr famous horses!

I was able to enjoy this book immensely! The details Walter Farley gave were incredible. You didn't miss a thing! You always knew everything that was going on with Man O' War. There wasn't too much detail either. It wasn't 350 pages of blah. In this book you were able to live through all of the races, dissapointment, and momentous occasions of Man O' War and his stable hand Danny. Danny was a loyal young man who more than anything wanted to be with his horse Man O' War. Any horse lover who has a special horse close to their heart or just loves horses in general will be able to relate to Danny's love for Man O' War!
I definitely recommend Man O' War as a must read for any horse lover!

It is really goood
the beginning is a little slow but then it grips you and you can hardly put the book down!
it is one of the best books that he has ever written!
If you love horses, or horse racing then this is the book for you!!

This is one of my favorite books ever. I read it a few years ago (in 8th grade), and am still looking for another racehorse book like it. Farley throws you into the story of a colt and his groom. Although in real life, Danny didn't exist, "Red" did and the information on the horse and his races is true. It gives all of the history without getting boring and sounding like a History book. I think everyone who even just likes horses should read it.

I adore this book, though it is not completely factual. Of course, Walter Farley never says it was:) It is extremely well written and I strongly recommend it to everyone who enjoys Walter Farley's books, horse racing, Man O'War, or just plain horses!

However, there are a few little facts that are incorrect. In the book it is mentioned that Mahubah, Man O'War's dam, is a gentle, good-natured mare that they bred to "tame the hot blood of Hastings". But in real life, Mahubah was noted to be a nervous, rather high-strung mare, much like her father Rock Sand. Rock Sand was very alert and nervous and had to literally have a padded stall because he would pace and kick so much they worried he would injure himself!

Second, Mr. Riddle did not see Man O'War until after he was purchased. He had an agent buy him at the Saratoga Sale.

Also, I think Walter Farley should have given some credit to Preston M. Burch and his book "Training Thoroughbred Horses" because Man O'War's entire training process was copied step-by-step from that book (which I also own).

Overall though, a great book and one of my favorites by the author. Very much recommended and enjoyed!

This was my favorite childhood book about horses that I had kept up until recently. My copy had been inadvertly thrown away and I just had to have another copy. I am still horse crazy and now have a collection of some of my favorite horse books from my younger days. The illustrations in this book inspired me as a kid to learn to draw horses. The copy I recieved was just as the seller said would be, in very good condition. I will keep this and share with my grandkids in the future.

This was my favorite book as a child. It is a really sweet, heart-warming story about true friendship and would be a great addition to any child's library

Little Black, a pony - this was the only book I ever wanted my mother to read to me at bedtime. Now, some thirty five years later, I have just bought a copy of the book and it has bought back some wonderful childhood memories. I used to recite the book to my mother word for word and even today, as I flicked through the pages, I remembered the story ! It bought a tear to my eye reading it and it is a truly lovely book about the love a little boy has for his pony ! Jackie, Cambridge, England

I read this series of books when I was young, and now I am excited to be able to share them with my 3 year old daughter. I gave her Little Black, A Pony and Little Black Goes To The Circus for Christmas. It's only December 26th now and she has already wanted to hear the books read multiple times! I'm now scrambling to find others in the series. It's a sweet, simple story of friendship with beautiful, expressive artwork.

I am angry that the reviews that are shown for this book are the ones for the original version, which appears to be out of print. This is *not* the original story with the wonderful pictures that I loved as a child, the ones that are mentioned in several of the reviews; this seems to be one "translated into Navajo" and with different illustrations. Judging from the cover, I don't like them. Be warned: This is *not* the book you remember.

This is not only a horse book, but a good vs. evil book. I highly recommend it.

This was the best book that I ever read! If I could I would give it 9 million star!

Abu the Black Stallions ownerhad lost his horse by going on a ship to a country and the ship had started sinking.The Black had saved a boys life named Alec.Alec had thought that the owner of the horse was really dead but he wasnt,which Alec didnt know that.Well anyways Alec had took the Black home with him and put him in a stall and took good care of the Black.Well now Abu had been looking for his horse for a while now and so he had finally found out where his horse was and went to Alecs house and proved ownership of the Black.Then Abu had taken the horse back home to their country and then Alec was really upset that he didnt have that horse anymore so Abu said that he could have the Blacks baby that was born.

This mysterious and enchanting book takes Alec and Henry to a setting far from the one in the previous book. In the barren deserts of Arabia, they search for their black stallion in his own home. A thrilling tale of survival, and just as vivid, with a race for high stakes and a horse to beat any of the same caliber all thrown in too make the story plot thicken.

This book had me turning the pages, never wanting to put it down. The story was very different from the first, but not as much as some sequels. Farley had a way of keeping his characters in prospective, and in turn, the story again took the readers on an exhilarating ride. A great piece of literature for young tweens to read, though the movie does have violence in it, but seems to make the story even more thrilling. An excellent book I will be sure to show my kids one day.

I just recently purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my 8-year old niece who loves horses at that tender young age as much as I did and still do at 32. When I was a kid, I must have read The Island Stallion about 20 times. It was my favorite in the Farley series, and I dreamed to the moon about beautiful red stallions and hidden island paradises every time I re-visited the book. A complete adventure delight for any horse loving child. Who didn't want their very own "Flame" after finishing this story? I still have my own battered copy from all those years ago. The cover on the new one is different, but it still evokes that feeling of wild magic as much now as it did 25 years ago!

I received this book for Christmas many years ago and remember how exciting it was, I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter! My own daughter is now 10 years old and I've been reading some of my old books to her. Some of them haven't really stood the test of time, being not quite exciting enough for her to want to read them on her own. The Island Stallion was just as exciting for her as it was for me though. She loved the part where they were exploring the hidden tunnels and kept asking why on earth hadn't they made a movie of this book! Walter Farley's writing truly brings this book to life where you can just imagine what Azul Island must be like. This book has hooked my daughter on the Black Stallion series even more than the original book that started it all and now every time we go to a horse show she adds to her collection. I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good mystery adventure type book and I have to say that I enjoyed reading it even as an adult.

When I was a kid, I was poking around in my parents' library one day when I found this book. I was overwhelmed when I read it. It had secret passages, skeletons, Spanish conquistadors and the most beautiful horse in the world living free and wild. What's not to like? I think I must have re-read the book a dozen times.

This is the book, in other words, that turned me into a reader. It was so captivating that I fell in love with not just this book but with reading itself. Someday soon I'll read it again and I know I'll be thrilled again.

I don't think it is possible or very useful to try to bring critical judgement to a book like this. It is sheer romanticism of the sort guaranteed to thrill a boy or girl. In its own way, it is perfect.

I loved this book as much if not more than the BLACK STALLION. I loved it so much that I could not bear to read the titles featuring 'BLACK STALLION MEETS FLAME" where my two favorite horses would be pitted against each other. It was an unfair pairing.
Wonderful fantastic adventure book. One of my all-time favorite horse stories right up there with KING OF THE WIND, and all the other WALTER FARLEY stories.

This is one of many Phantom Stallion books. I would say it's my favorite one so far. The reason this is my favorite book is because I like action books, and horse books. This story has both.
This story is about a girl named Sam and her old horse the phantom(Blackie). Mr. Solcum was accusing the phantom of stealing his new filly. Sam knew that the phantom had nothing to do with it because a blue roan had come and stole her gram's horse, Sweetheart. Can Sam find Sweetheart and the other horses that are missing.
I would recommend this book to people who like horses and adventures. I wouldn't recommend this book to boy because it has a lot of girl things in it like crushes and some stuff like that.

Mustang Moon is probably one of my favorite PS books. It's got such a great and different story line then the others. Linc Slocum is out to get the Phantom-anyway he can. He buys this fancy appaloosa named Hotspot and then this stallion comes and starts stealing all these mares, Hotspot to name one and Sweetheart too. Sam knows it's not the Phantom but Linc tries to prove it-even posting an award for the capture of him! Sam has to prove that the Phantom is not stealing the mares!

I love all of the books except #3 because she lets a bratty girl train her horse. This book is awsome. Every book has an adventure especially number 1 "The Wild One". I love these books and I recommend them to anybody who loves horses. I recommend them to 11 and up becauseyounger children won't understand the amazingness of this book. Do not read this if you don't like horses. You don't have to love them but don't hate them or you won't understand the girl's deep love for the horses. I love horses and would have done everything she did to save them. I'm currently on number 7 and I just bought number 8. I have yet to read it.

I like all the phantom stallion books.
They don't have lot's of romance stuff like some
other horse series and they're a little longer than
most horse series, but they don't drag out. which I like.
they're extremely well written.

Dark Sunshine is my FAVORITE of all the books. It's action packed to say the least. Sam goes riding and see horse rustlers trying to trap wild horses to sell for dog food. They use a judas horse (Dark Sunshine) to lead the horses into a trap. The Phantom manges to save most of his herd but when the rustlers leave to take the three horses they caught to the auction or wherever, they leave Dark Sunshine! Sam takes Dark Sunshine, who's terrfied of humans back to River Bend. You also meet the first HARP girl, Mikki in this book. It's defintely my favorite!

If I said there really was a phantom stallion would you believe me? Well I read a book by Terri Farley, Phantom Stallion 3: Dark Sunshine. The phantom stallion has a wonderful wild herd. Sam once owned the phantom however after a fatal accident the beautiful stallion became wild. I say the phantom is not much in the third book because a buckskin is in trouble, because there are humans catching wild horses with the buckskin horse as bait. How can Sam save the buckskin, the phantom and his herd?
Anyone can tell that Sam lived on a ranch because she used to own the phantom, but now she owns a different horse named Ace. The ranch she lives on is called River Bend Ranch. After Sam came back from San Francisco so she could heal from her fatal fall she pronounced, "It is good to be home." In the, Phantom Stallion 3: Dark Sunshine, Sam reminds me of the three girls in, Avalon. Just like Sam helped catch a member of the humans using the buckskin to catch the wild horses. After Sam caught one member of the rustlers things got a little better around the ranch.
This is a great book and I would recommend it to girls ten and up. They also should be horse crazy, because this book is the third in a series of twenty-five books so far. This Series was recommended to me by a friend, because she knew that I am horse crazy. This whole series is fiction. Phantom Stallion 3: Dark Sunshine is 232 pages long. I am sure if you read this book you will love it, along with the phantom.

Dark Sunshine is my favorite horse! Everything about her intriges(sp?) me! This book will leave you wanting for more after every chapter. Never has there been a more exciting series for all ages. I recommend this series for all the horse loving people out there. This has changed me life by revealing the cruelty towards horses and making me want to help the mustanges live in the wild with out the fear of humans.

This book was really amazing in the way that it kept you on the edge of your seat and had several other stories going on besides the one that's written on the back, although the plots come to gether at the end. The main idea in this Phantom Stallion book is that Samantha finds a horse that has been mistreated by horse rustlers and she must rehabilitate it. It was so nice seeing a horse working its way through recovery. It was really nice. Another problem is that Brynna has Started working on the HARP program with a really bratty girl named Mikki. Brynna also acts strange with Sam's dad. This book was great! If you like adventure and a little bit of mystery this book is for you!

Wow, Mr.A did such a good job on this book! The details he put in the action and love scenes. Was just completly amazing! You see in the begining it was just like some normal girl with a boy that likes her and a very big horse. the main character is the girl who becomes a woman warrior who has a destiny to be a great leader. it is very inspiring to any woman.
If the next book is as good as the first then OMG! I can't wait!

The Eye of the Stallion is a heroic story of determination, woman empowerment and freedom of choice. I would recommend this book to young ladies in high school and college.

This Book Eye of The Stallion is a very interesting adventure of one girls curiosity to find what is really is beyond The Valley.This book has alot of great characters and a interesting world.My favorite people have to be the wolven with their interesting eyes and how they are all seem to be strong and fast. If you are looking for a great adventure with interesting people, places, and battles then you will love this book.

Wise, profound, exciting and beautifully written coming of age story by a prize winning international author.
I recommend this book with 5+ stars.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is not quite fantasy, not quite coming of age, nor is it just an adventure. It is a delightful journey full of wisdom and courage. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to enjoy a good story. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment...!

The two horses are to run in the same race, the Black ridden by Alec and Satan ridden by another jockey Alec trusts. But when one of the horses at the race comes down with a deadly disease and must be put down, all the horses are quarantined will the race even go on?
At the end of the book it's not just a race for fun but more for survival.

Walter Farley is a fantastic author about horses. He knows his stuff.

This book is extrodinary.While you're reading this book El Dorado gets swamp fever.The other horses are checked for swamp fever.There's a wildfire and Alec tries to save the horses.Any girl that loves horses I recommend this book.

The Black Stallion and Satan is a great book by Walter Farley. It is the 3rd book in the Black Stallion series. This 178 page book was just as amazing as all the other Black Stallion books, so if you enjoyed the other book I suggest you read this one as well.

Right from the begining this book is exciting and suspensfull, you wont want to put it down. Alex gets a letter from Abu's daughter, telling him that her father has died, when he was thrown from the black. In his will Abu has left the Black to Alec. Abu has entered the black in a race. So Alec decided to let the Black run in that last race before his retirment, instead the Black and Satan end up in a race for there lives!

This is a great book that you will love just as much as the other Black Stallion books, but if you haven't read the other books I suggest that you read them before this one. This book would be good for anyone in there teens to adult.
