This small book is the most authoritative source on the subject ever written. I work in a military educational centre in the UK where we have four copies, all of which are always out on loan. We have actually made another 1/2-dozen copies and, after cataloguing, will make them available too.

Hard to find but inaluable

Apparently the initial print run was too small, and this important study is therefore hard to locate. Type the title into google and a scanned edition will come up online, or get Amazon's second-hand search team to secure you an original copy. It's the best study of WWII Axis jointery available. It is thorough, well argued and supported by plentiful relevant examples.

A significant young poet

Kapka Kassabova, Bulgarian immigrant to New Zealand, the author of a couple of collections of poems and of a couple of novels, and though she is a talented novelist, she is most of all a brilliant poet. Here comes her writings of longings and not belonging really to its right, with poignant thoughts and words drizzled with her special touch of East-European melancholy. With the ever present ocean under an often discontented sky she speaks of restlessness, doubt, dreams and wonder, love and pain, here and elsewhere. All Roads Lead to the Sea was the debut that sent her straight to the upper shelves among both contemporary and classic poetry. Highly recommended!

Excellent..a new voice reflecting the immigrant-experience..

Beautifully designed overview of salmon and their plight
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-06
This book is beautifully illustrated with photographs, illustrations, and the most detailed distribution maps I have ever seen. The design of the book makes it a perfect coffee top book and it's content makes it both a perfect introduction to the world of salmon while at the same time a valuable scientific reference.

This book is very accessible to non-scientists, if you are looking for a book about how salmon, man, and the enviroment interact this is a great book. The title sounds a little academic but it can be appreciated by anyone with interest in salmon. And anyone who flips through the book will be taken in by the beauty of this book.

The Atlas of Pacific Salmon is what all universities and government agencies needed 20 years ago. I dare say, it was almost worth the wait. This is a splensid compilation of data and images. The map work in this volume deserves much praise. The content covers biogeography, biology, genetics, threats, status etc....
Should sell for over $150

Essential Reading on Australia
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-16
If you are planning a trip to Australia or wish you could, this book should top your reading list. It's not a travel guide, it collects 39 articles or book excerpts from diverse sources that get to the heart of Australia.
You hear first-hand accounts of back packers, travel writers (Paul Theroux, Bruce Chatwin), Australians, adventurers, vacationers, and just ordinary people. Such a wide selection lets you see Australia from many angles from the food to the people to the animals and the landscape. This is so much more in-depth than a guidebook could possibly be.
Read the harrowing account of a woman canoer who survived a crocodile attack, experience learning to surf at Bondi, ride after brumbies in the Snowy Mountains, etc. Not all stories are heroic, as these are real people writing their impressions of a country and its amazing animals and hardy people. Each gives their own viewpoint which makes for fascinating reading.
The selections vary from 5 to 20 pages, making it a great book to dip into when you don't have extended reading time.
I highly recommend this book. After living in Australia 3 1/2 years, it brought back many memories of a wonderful country and showed me why I need to travel there again.

This collection of travel writer's accounts of their experiences in the land of kangaroos is amusing and informative. From an explanation of why Aussies call Americans "seppos" (a legacy of the rhyming slang of convicts, seppo means septic tank and tank matches Yank)to adventures in the Outback and quite a lot else, this is just a fun book to read.

A Rare & Accurate Book of a Seldom-Covered Tour

Review Date: 2006-01-21
I agree with the reviewer above that this book contains a great collection of memories and pics from the famous 1964 tour of the Far East & Australia/New Zealand. As a collector of Beatle books & such, I'd recommend this to any avid collector.
I have to disagree with this reviewer regarding the "inaccuracy" of reported numerous liaisons with fans. This tour was famous for them! I have personally not come across anywhere George or Ringo refute or even discuss these allegations. However, John Lennon made it clear that Beatle tours were "like Satyricon on tour." Further, in a later interview with Jimmy Nicols (the drummer who temporarily replaced Ringo on this tour, he states: "....Paul was not the clean chap he wanted the world to see. His love of blonde women and his general dislike of the crowds are not told. John, on the other hand, enjoyed the people, but used his sense of humour to ward off any he didn't care for. He also drunk in excess. In Denmark, for example, his head was a balloon! He had drunk so much the night before, he was on stage sweating like a pig. George was not shy at all, as the press had tried to paint him. He was into sex as well as partying all night with the rest of us. I was not even close to them when it came to mischief and carrying on. I thought I could drink and lay women with the best of them until I met up with these guys! But I did as they did. To sit here and list each and every little thing we did in such a short time, well, I just can't do it... The Beatles living life to the fullest. I just thank God that I was there to live it with them. Needless to say, the 300,000 people screaming at me and tearing me coat off to the skin was a trip in itself,"(excerpted from a 1987 interview with Austin Teutsch).

THE GREAT UNTOLD STORY

In all the books written about The Beatles, the Australian tour of July 1964 is usually dismissed with the three word reference "Far East Tour". This book was the first attempt to redress that injustice. Quite simply, the Beatles tour turned Australia upside down. In Adelaide 600,000 people gathered outside the hotel where they were staying (Adelaide had a population of 1.4 million). John Lennon told reporters "This is the greatest reception we've had anywhere in the world". In this book, acclaimed rock historian Glenn A. Baker chronicles the tour, and the visit to New Zealand. There is one glaring inaccuracy - it is claimed that the group slept with hundreds of young girls during the tour. This has been discredited by Ringo and George. Anybody familiar with the group would know that there was simply no time for this type of funny business, besides Brian Epstein kept them on a tight reign and wouldn't have allowed it. This part was probably included to get some cheap headlines in Australia's more salacious tabloids. One interesting section is the information on Jimmy Nicol, the stand-in drummer who filled in for Ringo during the first half of the tour. There is also the devastating photo showing Nicol sitting in a deserted airport terminal waiting for the flight back to England. All in all this book is a must for any serious Beatle afficionado. It gives a stark illustration of a country still coming to grips with not only a rock tour but a whole social phenomenon.

The Book: Business Early Warning Systems The Author: Dr. Patrick J. Caragata The Publisher: Butterworth Group ISBN 0408715766

Lets face it, the management of risk should not be a retrospective issue, but rather one of forecasting the probability of possible future problems and preventing them before they can happen. This should be done by addressing these possibilities through the use of contingency plans and is something that occurs far too infrequently. This subject for some reason has, to a major degree, gone without being addressed even though it is pertinent to marketing, just as it is to all other areas in business and government. Dr. Caragata, A CANADIAN SOFTWARE DESIGNER LIVING IN NEW ZEALAND, is well qualified for the task and has put together what this writer considers one of the most important books dedicated to this subject available today. This book is unique in that it addresses the subject of risk and how it can and should be addressed. Many examples of past incidents are cited. In an era in which greater culpability is being placed on administrators be it industry, commerce or government, this book is mandatory reading. It addresses the different types of risk and cites examples of how that risk can be addressed and the costs involved both in terms of monetary loss and survival. This can be appreciated when one considers the rash of air disasters such as the Swiss Air crash, oil spills such as that of the EXXON-Valdez and environmental CATASTROPHES such as that in Bhopal India by Union Carbide, to name only a few. Dr. Caragata provides examples of how these disasters as well as others could have been avoided had the early warning signs been acknowledged and dealt with. HE demonstrates that the science of examining the warning signs for survival are consistent ACROSS MAJOR BUSINESS DISASTERS. He states that many signs can be tracked electronically through the use of electronic risk profiling. He suggests that the use of such tools can provide senior management with the tools to train management and boards to be more open to information challenging their dominant values. He CONCLUDES THAT THERE ARE EIGHT MAJOR FOOTSTEPS TO BUSINESS DISASTERS:POOR QUALITY INFORMATION, INADEQUATE BACK-UP SYSTEMS, INADEQUATE FUNDING FOR WARNING SYSTEMS, WEAK RISK STANDARDS, IGNORING RISK THRESHOLDS, IGNORING EARLY WARNING SIGNS, INADEQUATE ADVANCE SCREENING AND LACK OF CLEAR SIGNALS. I would add that these deficiencies are applicable to all functions within industry, commerce or government. Again I emphasize that this book is mandatory reading for any person in a position of authority

Someone recommended this to us when my children were 6 and 3; now they are 9 and 6 and decided to listen to it again this week . . . for at least the fifth time. A wonderful deadpan narrator for these extremely funny, extremely strange stories. Even I never tire of them. There is nothing else quite like them.

I picked this audio cassette up at the library for a long car trip last summer. At some point on the journey home it was the only cassette we had not yet listened to, and we popped it in, never having heard of it or the author. It did not take long till the reverent silence in the car confirmed that this was a fabulous collection of stories. My husband and I kept glancing at each other...how had we not heard of these short stories? I know that the children enjoyed them and the parents found them equally delightful! Each one was more wonderful than the last. I am so happy to of found a copy and plan on pressing it on all our friends and relations to borrow, it is a gem.

Excellent, Skillful Collection - For a Girl! Reminiscent of Chekhov

You know, I dig this broad. She's one of the only females I bother with, besides Austen, Plath & occasionally, Anais Nin). Short & to the point but real subtle. An admitted fan, follower, disciple of Chekhov (the true master of the short-story), you can see where the comparisons come from. Beware, lots of the stories deal with rich folks, you know, spoiled old widows & their obtuse granddaughters. `Garden Party,' the title of one of the stories, says it all, but if you can stomach the setting, you're in for a treat. Read it once, then wait a couple days & read it again. You catch new stuff every time. Excellent dialogue too - for a girl!

For anyone who feels that short stories today have lost artistic value, this collection of short stories will make you regain faith. I love these extremely well written and poetic stories by katherine Mansfield, one of the originators of the short story. She masterfully uses wonderful poetic images and she concentrates on the devopment of her characters and uses stream of consciouness to make her stories simply facinating. I love this book!
