North Island on one side, South Island on the other, this map is in scale 1:1,000,000. Elevations are color coded and roads are clearly indicated as highway, major road or expressway. I haven't used it yet as our trip will be later this year. However, I have inspected it and it appears to have everything that I consider important in a map.

Having just returned from a trip to New Zealand, I came home with a longing to research the trees I saw there. They are like none we have here in the states. They are staggeringly beautiful. This book offers a wide array of the various types of trees you will find there. The tree fern pictures alone are worth getting this book for.

A great book from a great man

This book is one of Bob Jones' first. His writing about his own country is outstandingly honest and full of commonsense.

If a reader were to understand New Zealand and its problems this would be a good place to start. This despite the issues changing in the late C20th.

Many years later the author is still commentating on the New Zealand condition with the same honesty and wit and must rank as one of the greatest New Zealanders ever born.

In what other country would a writer have the ability to topple governments single handedly as he did in 1984.

This book must rank as an excellent introduction to the mind of, perhaps New Zealand's only genius.

Very handy for the New Zealand visitor

I bought this book while in New Zealand and it was very handy for identifying some of the trees and ferns that we saw. It has the traditional (Maori) name, the common English name, and the scientific ("Latin") name for each tree. This is very useful because sometimes the signs in New Zealand list the Maori name and sometimes the English name.

There are nice drawings of the leaves, flowers, and fruit for each tree, so it helps in identifying them at any time of the year. It is a pocket-sized book and was perfectly easy to carry and handy to have.

Are you a Hobbit Botherer? Have you seen all three Lord of the Rings movies multiple times? Do you involuntarily scream "He's so hot!" when Orlando Bloom appears on the television set? Have you had fantasies about visiting Hobbiton, fighting a fierce band of Uruk-hai, or receiving a magical ring? Do you have a growing collection of DVDs starring Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortenson, Sean Astin, and Elijah Wood? If so, you might be a Hobbit Botherer.

New Zealand with a Hobbit Botherer is the tale of the author as he tries to have a normal vacation in New Zealand with his Hobbit Botherer wife. As the couple enjoys the beautiful sights and rich culture of New Zealand, the author finds himself being dragged to old set locations, places where Elijah stood, and a variety of commercial venues using the Lord of the Rings related themes. The result is hilarious.

New Zealand with a Hobbit Botherer was a complete breath of fresh air. I laughed so hard, I could hardly breathe. Moreover, though I have always wanted to go to New Zealand, now I yearn to do so.

I have just one more thing to say to the author. We Hobbit Botherers know you are laughing at us about our infatuation but we really don't care. We are far too busy daydreaming about the track that the crew followed on their journey. Moreover, the sooner you realize that Hobbiton truly exists (you did find remnants didn't you?), the happier your life will be:).

It might interest readers of a book on Kiwiana to know that the word'kiwiana'was originated by New Zealander Leighton Barclay Carrad in 1956-he was my business partner in 1974 when we called our business KIWIANA SALES LTD-Leighton still operates as Kiwiana Distributors and also runs the KIWIANA CORRESPONDENCE CLUB which he formed in 1986-so now you know where the word kiwiana comes from.Leighton told me that he formed the word when he received an American building book in 1956 that used the word Americana in an article on the USA. A excellent window into New Zealand's colonial past

The book is this author's best yet. It is divided into two parts. The first is a series of dramatic stories of the bush fires and city fires during the 1870s. The second half is a series of chapters containing insightful views of how New Zealand colonial society was organised.
